The prize pool for duel is good though, 1k $ more for 1-3th places (8k $ for 1st place last year, and 4k $ - 2k $ respectively).

really good that they're doing this... and pretty glad too since it's been dogshit for the last 2 years (not just at quakecon, but at other events as well). usually only top 3 got paid and it was at a time when the top 8 consisted of like k1llsen spartie dahang avek strenx which... if you're a amateur dueler, is a really hard place to break into in the first place, let alone get a $$$ placing.

Sorry, but that wont happen with the prizepool this year has.
Last year winners had 16k, this year overall 7k and winners only 4k.
That isnt even enough to cover more than 2 guys traveling costs + hotel.
This is really sad, I had so much hype and expectations for this year since it finally looked like we would have had a proper CTF team going into a QuakeCon instead of Duel players getting together just for one tournament.

Well, cant wait for the Netherlands lan, hopefully that will turn out amazing and bring out some tight matches like The Party did earlier this year.

While being great maps, Aerowalk, Blood Run and Lost World got really old and (sorry fans) a bit stale after all those years. Gameplay on Toxicity lacks depth imo, not really exciting to watch if you like tactical matches.

I guess it lacks some depth like asyyy said. It's my best map atm but there are not many brilliant moments. Most of the time I don't think too much, just do what needs to be done :-)
I feel that it could be more interesting and gain some depth with smart nades play but it's hard to play nades on such small map.

also reflux in ctf when camper crossings (q3wcp14) and siberia were both available is kind of awkward, thought its not a bad map per se. Also the ctf prize pool is meh given the amount of work required to play ctf at top level. I wont even mind cutting the duel prize pool short to enhance the ctf one as it stands.

Also think someone should make a tourney (like the Qcon FFA) where players get $ based on how many frags they get. So instead of giving the winner $100, split it up as a % among all 8. Would be amusing to see in duel too...

It's not as if I'm bothered by it really, but its quite funny indeed that once the American tournament organisers/whoever realized that they have no chance to win vs euros in TDM or CTF, the prize pool is dropped by a large margin for it, lowest of all Quakecons to date despite growth in the game. Oh well, at least rapha will get a nice chunk of that 19k for duel, eh? ;)

Surely the "fans" just want to play quake at qcon regardless, if anything setting a mappool like this makes people play them more because they want the feeling of praccing for a tourney like the pros would have to do! i think open is more like a community event for everyone, so the map pool gives a chance to many players to play some good games. lesser ones still can practice the shit out of hektik/t9/bf/phrantic in the following weeks, phrantic also favors cpm players aswell, so they can play at least a couple of good matches instead of just getting hammered on the usual ztn/dm6/aero/etc.. maps by good players and veterans. first i was like whaaat? but after thinking about it it makes sense. there is a map for every category of players in there: q3 veteran (dm6), cpm player (phrantic), ql players (t9) + a fast and a brain map that been put aside so noone really have them mastered the same way as most players have ztn. if someone playing hektik-bf 24/7 in the follow 3 weeks they will likely have an edge on those maps over the other competitiors.

i understand that they want different map pools for the open duel. but theres no need to go for bad maps. as i mentioned there are alternatives that are better.

also it isnt just meant for totally casual duelers. think of someone like me, i would never get an invite to the pro tourney. but there are lots of players like me who still take duel seriously. the map pool is basically a slap in our collective face. i doubt u could even find people to practice those maps with. o wells.

on the second part i dont really understand what u complain about? open is for casual duel players, thats why it called open. if you never get an invite to a pro tourney thats pretty much mean youre casual isnt it? despite someone being casual if they want to take it seriously they will practice those map in the next 3 weeks. or what is the real problem here, the map pool prevents you getting free money? should it be renamed "open for wonko and lesser player"?

just discard ctf as a whole and split the prizepool for 4-5 smaller community tournies, like domination, 1 flag ctf, 2v2 tdm, ffa, 2v2 ca, etc with 1000$-1500$ prizepool each. hold them at the same time so the same 5 players wont bank all the money, that would keep the byoc crowd occupied and good promotion for premium aswell.

The price pool for the professional duel tournament is really good. The CTF pricepool is really low that's true but I'm glad id software is still able to put some efforts into organising a big competition and add quite a lot of money (the total is nice for a "commercial failure").

Mappool... wow what a surprise. But everyone is flaming about single maps. What most bothers me is that battleforged and campgrounds are for me almost the same map. They both have the same dynamics items etc. Thats VERY bad. I don't know phrantic at all in QL, i just know it from Q4. But if its drop-drop.... and not pick-pick-drop-drop there can be a couple of bad maps in the pool and you can still play the one which suits you best. Even though i'd rather see a good 5 maps mappool with pick first system. In some tournaments oldschool players used to just drop the new maps (like hektik or tox) all the time, which is a shame. But I'm looking for some T9 and hektik matches. I like the dynamics on both maps. And now you can flame me nzro :D

lm talking about how its being ORGANIZED year by year: not as World event but as local event. The focus is definetly not on attracting as many players from around the world as possible. Announcing 1 month earlier would make it possible to get visas and find air tickets cheaper MULTIPLE times.

Whats so difficult in doing it earlier? Place - always the same. Date - always the same. Prize pool? The budgets in big companies are known from the start of the fucking year.

Maybe its a result of some kind of undercarpet struggle between evil forces of SPECTRE and UNDERCOVER BROTHERS that we get to know so late?

Oh, no, its just a dark ritual of BUEROCRATIC FUCKTARDS.

But since the first Quakecons the eSports scene has grown and became a huge thing that makes games more than a casual thing you do after work / school.

Game broadcasting and pro tournaments made games like SC2 much bigger than they could ever be if not for all the coverage and competition between pros.

So while Quakecon is the biggest BYOC lan and is about the community - promoting eSport will clearly only favor everyone.

Fans want to see their favorite players / teams compete.
Lan organizers want bigger names in their event.
Sponsors want bigger competition for higher view count.

Helping the pros helps the entire scene...

Yup. One year they had a miss quakecon and another year they had a quad damage touranment that combined all the quakes. Quakecon was founded by the community. It was founded by dudes on mirc that just wanted to have a frag party. Hope it never completely turns into something like eswc or world cyber games. They need to have certain events for just regular fans.

I really am disappointed in the Open duel map pool. I mean seriously. Even noobs and "casual" players don't play those maps. Hell, might as well throw in The Longest Yard and Hell's Gate with how those were picked.

Hopefully someone will get the bright idea to change their mind about this.

-30% taxxes from all winnings in US as european unless you can get the 30% back in a later state which I did not get back from my 3 years winnings last years.

If I win the CTF I would get 500 dollars in my pocket. Where the full trip would cost me about 2500 dollars.

And since it's such bad prizes no good CTFers would come from europe :P

Seems like a ridiculously late announcement. very difficult for pro players to get ready in that amount of time (organised etc)

I just can't understand why id wouldn't want to showcase it's 'baby' and get as many top players there as possible. especially when Quake has been dropped from so many other circuits. Then there's the worrying onset of Sh*tmania and losing players to that.
I think we were all looking forward to a full list of pro's and great games.

Quake should be the gleaming 'duel' in id's crown..
when they have full control of this event every year there should be no excuse..
and Bo3 for duel... doesn't leave room for any mistakes.

anyway - here's hoping! :o)
