somebody know why the streamers work as a mixed team? technique from qltv (usa), shoutcasters from level up (uk). jehar is from usa and is doing qltv, level up, tastyspleen right? is greasedscotsman still in qltv?

is the reason the cost? or that qltv is american? qltv is pretty inactiv right?

well then you have a very poor memory. I've played ZeRo4 7 times; I won 3 of those times. in tournaments, I played him three maps. I lost ztn 0-5 one tourney, 2-6 another tourney, and t4 5-19.

I've never been "wrecked" by ZeRo4, and I didn't play him in the tournament you're referencing. but thanks for your informative comment.

As for zero4 being overrated, there's a huge difference between being a successful online player and being a successful real-world player.

I don't doubt you can hang with z4 online. Honestly, I've seen a lot of players hang with z4 online, even some players who aren't really all that talented.

There aren't many players in North America who can beat rapha in a match that means something. Zero4 has done that in CSN tournaments countless times. While all of the second tier players like ziel and rey at best can only hang with rapha on maybe one map of a BO3.

Why is this a fail tournament? There were 3 Americans on last DH I believe, was that a fail too? Or is it just the lack of Europeans? What's wrong with having a LAN for NA based players?
There are some pretty good NA duelers, plus there is Cypher and a1r-r41d. You should be thankful instead. Or just don't watch it if you're not interested.

Swedish people don't need Visa to enter US. When I got a visa to visit Australia it took less than a day to get it validated.
And it's not like there's a surprise that there's a Duel and CTF tournament at Qcon.

2 Yes i've watched Z4-rapha finals.... the ones in which Rapha got over 70 ping, and got outaimed badly on any map.

Yeah, it's totally not quakecon's fault that they announced tournaments so late that for some players it was impossible to get visa in that time, and for everyone the tickets price is significantly higher than if booked early, which is already a lot.

what was the timeframe when players got invited. there was a late announcement and list of players, but when was the real date when players are invited. we heard that the americans trained ctf before an official announcement got out.

Remember, at IEM Dubai, when cooller had visa problems, and Carmac actually found a way to get him to the tournament? That approach is one of the reasons why IEMs were so good.
I'm pretty sure that no one from id software made a phone call to av3k and discussed this with him. They don't care and don't understand that if you don't aggressively work towards making a best tournament and do everything possible, it won't happen by itself.

BBC News are reporting a leaked report out of Dallas that id Software will be announcing at Quakecon 2012 that after years of collating feedback from the quake community they are well into the development of the ultimate FPS game.

Sources say that massive funding is being set aside for the development and promotion of the game (including tv ads, high profile tournaments with unprecedented levels of prize money). It is expected that the game will focus on multiplayer competition and will take advantage of the increase in 120hz monitors to be a fast paced game with gfx being pushed to the limit whilst being played at 120 frames per second. Features will be entirely competitive focussed to create the utlimate competitive gaming arena for e-sport professionals.

One source said when interviewed: "I have never seen anything like it, I have played on early pre-alpha versions and it will blow the gaming scene away, much like Quake 3 Arena did over a decade ago. It will however require some heavy duty hardware, but just like Q3A did back in the day - the game is aiming to push the envelope".

Sources close to the development team say the driver was concern that a new game currently under development by James 2GD Harding called Reborn might knock them from their pedestal as the best FPS game developer in the Gaming Industry. "And well we just couldn't have that could we..?"

what browser are you using? I'm on chrome and few months ago it started stuttering for me as well. after downgrading to a few months older version of chrome everything works fine now. if that's the case for you just go back 5/6 months in version of chrome you're using

The only valuable Painkiller was the original game released in 2004, every single sequel since was crap, and "Recurring Evil" released in 2012 was probably the worst ever, a real shame.

Let's hope that "Hell & Damnation" will bring back some fame on this franchise. Would be nice to hear some feedbacks from beta testers.

those were my guesses for seeds, not actual seeds, so yeah.. I don't think ZeRo4 is better than czm. after the first round of the group stage, in fact, I expected ZeRo4 to lose to czm, which did eventually happen. I'm merely referring to recent results which would've influenced seeding.

Check your settings, I have 120 mbits too and I am getting at least 7-8 fps. Hate whiners like you who have problems on their PC, but blame everything on stream.

Thank you streamers for using high quality config! It is absurd to use a high picmip / simple items config on a stream that will hopefully be watched by people being introduced to pro quake. It could be a bit brighter though (r_gamma).

Why is it absurd? These graphics are 13 years old, they don't look "good" regardless of ANY settings, who are these "amazing" picmip 0 graphics going to appeal to? Also, if you put any thought into it at all, simpleitems are much better for anyone learning the game, the icons of the items correspond perfectly to the timers AND the weaponbar. If you're new to the game, do you have any fucking idea which gun they're about to pickup when they run toward a full graphics lightning gun? Of course not.

I won't even go into how awful it looks at low fps and 360p, add in own3d routing issues for some people and well, your glitterbug full graphics look pretty impressive now, don't they?

It's absurd because Quake 3 can actually look pretty damn good and clear (with brightskins) with graphics turned on. And this way it won't look like complete piss when someone who hasn't been playing Quake for 10 years tunes into the stream. If you as a player cannot tell whats going on in the stream because they have the textures turned on then there might be something wrong with your eyes.

And no, simple items is NOT clear to a newbie. It is more clear to see the exact same model of the gun that they see ON HAND on the screen. It is also clearer from a visual perspective that they are important pickups since they are huge and animated, emphasizing the item-based gameplay of the entire thing.

This dumbass elitism will keep the streams with low viewers because newbies will be completely turned off by the abstract graphics. NOTHING is being sacrificed by turning the graphics on. Your sacred game is still the same game. The players are playing the same game they always have. It just looks better to spectators now.

The framerate problems are unfortunate but hopefully they can fix that on the stream side. Turning it back to pastel graphics would be a bad solution.

I don't really think simple items help that much. I personally had a little trouble in the beginning to differ when it was ammo or a gun, till I figured out ammo had an square outline and weapon doesn't, and it's a little harder to see as it's small and such, especially for newcomers, plus what the other guy replied.

And well, if with picmip 0 people who care about graphics won't think it's good, with higher picmip then...
In defrag movies it might be easier to notice, no picmip and a lot of times it just looks very beautiful, despite beeing quite simple graphic wise nowadays. High picmip just looks... very bad, except in those "white textured" movies, but still no picmip looks way much better in general.

It depends what you mean by "good", the graphics don't look modern, but they certainly don't look bad - especially considering the game is technically over 12 years old.

Aesthetics will always be opinion based, but is it not a reasonable assumption that if a tournament is drawing a lot of new eyes, that putting all the graphics to full will be more appealing to those new players?

You make a reasonable point with your statement on simple items, but you can also make an argument that new players aren't going to see the significance of pick-ups, that it is the commentators job to recognise the nature of the audience and highlight this. Knowing the audience is pretty critical to providing the best experience overall.

I personally think it makes no difference whatever graphics and settings you go with, but you're going to get a backlash from the majority of people who regularly watch this game when they see these settings.

For people who care so much about graphics, these will look bad, even though I think they look alright. Is some kid who raves about games being good based on their graphics going to sit there and say, "Oh my, this 12 year old game has rather nice looking graphics considering its age", or is it going to be more like "omfg lulz wtf @ gfx".

I just asked my younger brother and he said that picmip 0 is looks way better to him. And he isn't kind of person who would play anything on low graphics.
Imo modern q3 maps like toxicity with lots of details and high res textures look good enough. Not impressive but nice and clean while picmip 10 has completely different aesthetics than mainstream games. It can get approved by mainstream (like minecraft) or not (like quake). Nowadays ppl often complain about too many map details making the game distracting (http://www.gamasutra.com/blogs/EricSchwarz/20...Detail.php). I'd be rather concerned about all kind of particle effects, dynamic lighting, hdr etc. Also QL models have low poly count and they stand out in the bad way. brgreen keel with some bloom is ok though.

I agree on simple items.

Actually after that few mins break stream seems fixed and it really isn't that bad, at least for me it's quite good. Still I'd preffer higher picmip with more fps but I totally can understand their point of view to show quake in the best possible gfx.
And tbh the only thing lacking is the bigger amount of players, at least eu pros but can't blame quakecon for that...
So please stop grumble and don't be so negative without having the right reasons...

Hey guys, we're aware of the framerate issues on the stream, and I can assure you they are *not* network or delivery related. The contracted companies we are working with are providing hardware that is adding some processing to the video feed that is cutting the framerate way down. We couldn't reasonably address this until some time was available. Between now and the end of the keynote, we hope to have everything banged out and get a consistent good framerate out of things. Thanks for all the feedback guys!

Look at these guys: boasting about their superhypermegafast internet connection their sponsors provided, telling everyone how great the tournament is...and meanwhile the framerate of their stream is horrible. Oh and inb4:

- No configs
- VOD's taking forever to upload (zoot uploads the VOD's of a random cup instantly, but these knuckleheads seem to be fucking snails)
- Demos missing

just wow, where to start. I'm sure there will be amazing matches/moments. I'm sure people will have fun this weekend. I'm sure John Carmack will choose better intro music next time -- but the context here, such a deafeningly vacant feel this year. Coming through on this end is an almost obligatory mood, like somebody signed a contract with the hotel and simply fulfilled it.

Sure the lack of euro players hurt, but from what I can tell, they're not missing anything(unless you count the Doom 3 footage, lol). Almost like I partied all night watching DH, only to wake up, rub my eyes, blink, and there's John Carmack talking in monotone, muted "excitement." Both surreal and sad.

Agreed, but that doesn't mean Carmack's speech shouldn't happen and be streamed. Whether they should have it in a separate stream is a different discussion. I believe his annual speech adds quite a bit to the event, and differentiates it from the dwindling number of LANs.

Just wanted to touch on a few things,

First, we're aware of the small sound issue that is going on (there's a light buzzing). This is one of these things we can't troubleshoot and fix while we're live.

Second, regarding picmip vs. high quality graphics for the stream. While using picmip and smooth graphics settings have become a standard in Quake Live streaming, the use of a high quality config is something that will help draw in new users and show off what Quake Live actually looks like to casual users. The question isn't really "is a high quality graphics config better than a good picmip config?" Personally, I much prefer picmip. The question being asked is "will a streaming picmip config turn off viewers unfamiliar with the Quake Live scene?" The answer to that is yes.

Third, regarding the fps and smoothness of the stream. Every year this is the utmost importance to us, more than anything we want a smooth, fast stream. We are working on getting it down to a workable, smooth 30fps stream. We are also working on upping the bitrate. Once we get a comfortable, smooth 30fps stream, we'll try to get it working on 60fps. There is a lot of trading video feeds with the A/V company, a lot of software and encoders and recorders the video runs through, and it can be hard to pinpoint where exactly the video is getting the stutters. We are working hard, however, during the downtime and keynote.

Fourth, music choice. We're using four artists who gave us permission to use their music. If you know of any quality artists who are willing to give us permission to use their music, please get them in touch with me. Or give me suggestions for royalty free music. We're open to input.

Finally, we're looking at how quickly we can make VOD's and demos available. We also plan on bringing some demo coverage after-hours to ensure we cover more matches that we miss. We'll be featuring more panels on Friday outside the keynote, so we'll try to cover those gaps in coverage with demo casting.

You do understand that picmip 0 makes 360p unwatchable and that is the reason why people want a stream with high picmip?
Its not like the graphics are any good anyway, you dont play quake for the graphics so please consider using picmip. You're ruining the stream for people with bad connections for the potential 5 new registrations.

Todd mentioned you've got insane bandwidth available to you. Is it not possible to run an alternative stream that's running a cfg that doesn't make me want to claw my eye balls out? This is the reason why high quality gfx cfg's are never used, because it actually looks worse. So it's hardly a good selling point.

If you want to showcase how good the game looks in high settings, why not have a really nice gallery doing so.

It's not a question if there's bandwidth available. There isn't really the capability to run two streams. From a technical standpoint to a financial standpoint, it's just not there. We have actually looked into it, but the costs of paying for a second ad-free stream just isn't something that makes a lot of sense. id Software wants to show their game with a quality graphics config, and I can see why it makes sense.

While I totally prefer and understand the legacy of picmip in Quake, there's a need to compete with other esport titles that are better looking. Every other esport uses quality graphics for broadcasting. Even though all the pros in other games use all-low settings, their streams look of higher quality.

Simply put, id doesn't want to promote their game as "bad looking" or "from 1999" when it really can look pretty good. We're still tweaking the bitrate and some other factors so it looks nicer and smoother, so just try to bear with us

tl;dr
picmip isn't coming back for QuakeCon. People will miss it, including me, but there's a reason for it that was discussed at great length.

turns out that long conversation was a waste of time then. when no-one actually gets to see quake being played who cares what the picmip value is.

and why would it cost money to stream just the games?

give dis and zoot an internet connection and let them do what they do well every week of the year. They provide far more promotion for the game than quakecon has this year or the past 3 or so years i've watched.

im sure you're not personally responsible for this travesty of a tournament viewing experience, but whoever is, either individually or collectively they are either incompetent or actively trying to make this fail. Either way, as someone relatively new to the quake scene my experience as a viewer of quakecon just leaves an impression of ID Software and QuakeCon as 'we dont actually give a fuck about quake'. It doesnt make me want to play QL, it makes me want to play SC2 and warsow.

In the end I have to agree with tmunnich

NO MORE QUAKE AT QUAKECON

Call it BYOC-CON or Carmac-KeyNote-Con or whatever

The retardness of the schedule and the strategic choice of one stream desperates me.
How can people with so much experience be so missing the point.
Countless minutes of geeky tech stuff 5% of the audience might understand and 1% might be interested in.
It's like they have no planning at all, they brought Carmack on the scene, and unleashed the passionate beast without a watch.

Like people watching the stream all work in the videogame development industry.... I felt like I watched a professional technical conference at an IT fair.
Of course the guy will talk endlessly, he's a gifted passionate geek, nothing wrong here, but blimey, adapted content for audience, can do ? :/

"Yay, let's rent an expensive venue, run a tournament, and not allow people to spectate it."
Finally we have the technology to be able to stream tournaments, few years or even months ago organizations were struggling to set proper broadcasting.
But now we/they have the opportunity to do it quite easily technically speaking, they do it wrong. What a waste

Well spent money folks...

And don't tell me they have constraints or vendor interests, bla bla.
No, there are no sponsors nor brands represented on the stream during Carmack's speech.
They just succeed in pissing people off that will rage forever and remember this quakecon moment as a terrible failure.

How can an organization team fail like that, we're in 2012 damn it !

Last year was good though, wasn't it? I remember one recent Quakecon was covered really well, I had a lot of fun watching it from home. That's what makes this even more frustrating. If they fucked up every year, I would have given up by now and I'd take the occasional stream or VOD as an unexpected bonus.

Did 2011 have quickly-released VODs, covering most of the games? It might be that the stream was buzzy but the VODs were good, and I watched the VODs that year. I thought I remembered a year with good live coverage though, and no power failures...

So Quakecon brings Jehar, Zoot and Disrepute in to cast the tournaments then somehow completely forgets to set up a stream for them. How do you fuck up this hard?

If I go look at the teamliquid page, there's roughly 150 streams (including the non-featured) going. If I google 'How to set up a gaming stream', I get 46 million hits. If I search that on youtube, I get 3600 videos.

tbh I think this year particularly carmack's keynote is the best part of quakecon.
The new visual device revolution is starting and it's starting right where the god of graphics is lurking around.
That combined with a less than optimal tournament turnout makes the keynote the most interresting part imo.

Ofc agreed. My experience here is more specific. I played q2 for several years with DaHanG, briefly in his q2 tdm clan and he lives about 45mins away from me in FL. Just seemed like in every major international ql event, Rapha's been there waiting in the semis to knock him out.
Then along comes this 'twilight of ql' event and yet again Rapha poised to do the same damn thing again. What could of been an incredibly memorable, long-damn-time-coming victory on live broadcast, for so many player fans to share, turned into a lifeless twit from a joke of an organization.

Quakecon Duel Tourney RUINED! (no spoilers)

after MONTHS waiting for Quakecon, one of the only competitive Quake tourney's left..
they manage to play the guts of the duel tournament before people attending have managed to unpack their bags!
All the games are played at the same time.
The ONE stream offered was nauseatingly jerky.

(everyone wants to hear the John Carmack keynote - no problem with that)

then we come back... to what?
find out the rest of the games have been played and we're left with the bronze and Grand Final on Sat??

(of course you start sifting ESR for links and get the game results spoiled as well... pointless)

They don't even cut to vod's or replays - it goes offline ?

I'm sure if there 'was' a stream it'd cut to the main stage with Todd telling us how great everything is!

This. What hurts is that the indifference is especially glaring now. Maybe 10 years ago when esports weren't at all big quakecon could get away with tacking on a couple of tournaments and half assing their way through them because people didn't know any better. But today it's different. Expectations are higher. There are a bunch of quality leagues like GSL and MLG. Tournaments have great production value but also require a greater commitment on the part of the organizers. It's just a different time now and esports should be left to events that cater to esports.

I honestly hope that there are no more tournaments at quakecon next year. Everyone will be better off. id gets to keep their 15k. Competitve quake fans can avoid getting spit in the face and having to watch the company that made the damn game pissing on the dying corpse of quake. Pro players will get to move on to something else. Seriously, id, I beg of you,

NO MORE QUAKE AT QUAKECON.

This is an entirely accurate point. QuakeCon coverage is not MLG or GSL, by any means. This is a volunteer-run event for a free BYOC LAN party. Yes, it's grown in year to include an expo area and the John Carmack keynote... but it's still a grasroots BYOC event at heart.

That being said, the entire coverage crew at QuakeCon are diehard Quake Live fans who believe in the future of QL as an esport. We're putting all of our effort to bring as much quality coverage as possible.

I have seen every single streamed quakecon, and some years before that using gtv.

All of them have been awful. Sincerely I'd have fired the quakecon staff a long, long time ago....twice, and that probably includes you.

It's not all volunteers, and coincidentally all mistakes are on the employees side. Lets hope Zenimax steps up once again and starts firing people like they did with rage.

I just registered to say that man they messed up this year, I don't really play much anymore but I still look forward to spectating the Dreamhacks, Quakecon, and anything in between, and to have virtually the entire tournament take place on the first day of Quakecon, on a Thursday, half of which was during the day when people are at work, the other half of which was apparently at the same time as the keynote (which I enjoyed by the way) so they couldn't even stream that half, just doesn't make sense. I realize they have a ton of things going on at Quakecon besides the tournament, but it seems to me that if they had just scheduled things in a more sensible manner (like maybe a little bit of the tournament every day around the same time of day, with the final on Sunday maybe) they could have avoided this mess.

I think it would have been especially neat to watch the semifinals live along with Zoot and Disrepute (or whoever) :(

Meh,

Tired of reading rage comments...

I feel good that I decided to go to bed instead of watching and waiting for the games. Will see the games later on VODs.

Rage is the last thing we should do I reckon. Just keep supporting Quake and don't cancel them subs. Winter is coming after all... (no pun intended, summer is always like this). Hopefully next Quakecon will show more respect for the people that still play the game that made id what they are. If they neglect that then gg id no re.

Regarding tournaments... it's time we addmit that it's over. The days of the online heroes came on our doorstep and there is no interest for this game except from the people that grew up with it and have loved it ever since. Hopefully there will be a new reincarnation with fancy graphics that offer the good 'ol fun and competativness.. For now it's a quake tattoo left on my foot and lots of good time and memories left. No regret.

We were supporting Quakelive for 3 years, and what happened? No more QL at IEM and ESWC, no more ZOTAC, many pro players escaped to SM, id's own esports tourney is more like ebullshit, there are no ladders, no features to enhance competitions, there is now no free tournament map pool, and id representatives tell us each year that new great things are coming.
Come on, just stop this crap. Those three years demonstrated like nothing else that id are incompetent idiots at esports. There will be no next big esports game from id, because they don't have any idea what esports is. Whatever you support, it should be from some different group of developers that actually shows some promise, not from id.

Hundreds of Pre-Reg players denied at qcon

I arrived at 2 PM today with my pre registration voucher and bar code in hand and got in line. 7 hours later, The line moved 20 feet.

An ID rep came to over 300 people standing in line with our pre-registered vouchers in hand, and were told there were no more general admission seats available at the tables. The ID employee gave us the chance to sleep on a cold tile floor for 24 hours in anticipation/ or hope that 300 people who paid 50 bucks for a reserved seat would not show up and claim their spot by 7pm the following day. Only then we could be allowed in.

My heart goes out to the couple that was in line behind me. Much like myself, they had general admission pre-registered vouchers to attend and participate in the LAN. They were husband and wife who both took a weeks vacation, and spent over 3 thousand dollars to book a hotel stay for 5 nights, and round trip air fare from WASHINGTON STATE!!!!

The ID rep himself stated, that The servers the IT group had, was more than powerful enough to support 3 or more thousand players. But the chosen destination for the event did not have enough juice/ electricity, nor the spare room to host more players.

We were all told that preregistering with quakecon does not entitle you to a spot in the BYOC now days. ONLY paying players get a guaranteed spot.

Please read http://www.quakecon.org/ The registration info leads you to believe that it does, but is also open enough to warrant them to turn you away if enough people pay money to play.

I asked this employee of ID, he was not a Volunteer... If ID has learned any lessons from this? The fact that the quakecon event is growing, and more adequate space and power is needed to suit the influx of players at the event. He immediatly turned his head and brushed me off to answer a question from a kid who asked if we could have raffle tickets for what ever open seats may pop up.....considering that ****** kid was at the end of the line, its was a good idea from him to bump his way into the BYOC after showing up late. Ironicly The Staff member said it was possible option....wtf?

For future quake con goers. If you plan on attending next year, do not assume it's like the quake cons of days past. It's not a free event anymore unless you plan on spectating only. Participants will be paying around 50 dollars to attend.

Im lucky I live 60 miles from the event, or I would be a little more aggrivated than I all ready am for ID wasting my time. And Truly, My heart does go out to the couple that lost 3 thousand bucks coming to Texas from Washington, to be treated like dirt by the volunteer staff, and turned away like they were not important to the lively hood of the game.

This together with the failure to stream the duel championship shows how little they care for their customers. If they don't care about me why should I care about them?. Not anymore.

I think it is time to take action. I suggest everyone cancels the renewal of their pro or premium subscription to QL. I will never buy another game designed by them.

I really start to think they enjoy the rage they produce. Probably more than one from id comes to read these raged posts after every fail and laugh out loud.

I don't know why the BYOC got overbooked this year, but I agree with you, WTF?! It sucks, I agree, and my only hope is that next year things are run more smoothly and successfuly. Compared to a large, paid LAN event like Dreamhack or similar events, QuakeCon remains an entirely volunteer-supported, free LAN.

I don't have any definitive answers, but I do hope you return to QuakeCon next year. <3

I am so confused. I saw a couple of games, then the keynote came on for several hours, then it went offline. Were games played during the keynote or afterward? I was under the impression that quake was over for the day when the stream went offline. It said on their website that almost all the games were to be played today but I missed them all? Or were they even shown? Were all the good matches played during the keynote, or were they just not shown at all or what happened? This is the most disappointing tournament I've ever seen... I'm usually one of the first people to come here and defend a tournament, but this is completely unacceptable. I know it isn't the casters' or QLTV's fault. It's just so disappointing. Everyone here was really looking forward to this. I don't even know what happened today. I TRIED to watch the tournament, but I couldn't, and now it's been one day and it's almost over? I feel like I accomplished as much as those who didn't even tune in.

I can understand how most people are anticipating any wanting to watch Quake Live tournament coverage. The fact is, 4000+ tuned in until they very END of the keynote, and by the end of tournament coverage we were just over 1000.

The QuakeCon stream, especially this year, is about the entire QuakeCon experience. This means a combination of Panels and Events with regular Tournament coverage with Interviews, Overlays, etc... We're trying to create the best balance as possible, while doing additional demo-casting to bringing an expanded coverage.

The casters here, the tech team, and the media team are putting in an extraordinary effort to make sure things are as quality as possible. Try to be patience with us.

Not sure we have the same definition of content balancing.
It's the first time I see an international gaming event sabotage a stream like that. I can understand there are different things going on on-site, but hours of the same conference ?
A technical conference like that doesn't loose its value if not entirely broadcasted.
It's perfectly fine as a vod/podcast, which people would probably watch anyway cause the interest doesn't reside in the fact that it's live, but in the content and the topics discussed. Plus, as it's hours long, it lets people watch it when they have the time to.
This is the way most mid-size professional technical conferences are managed.

Don't people dare think the 4,000 watchers were there for Carmack's talk until the end of the speech.
Of course it dropped afterwards, it was 3am in europe.
It's a shame we can't distinguish the proportions, to see how many pissed off people compared to legit listeners.

Of course you understand that:
- it was 3:15 AM here when you have turned the stream off for a whole HOUR (and you expect 4000 people sit and wait until it gets online? You shouldn't even count on that... but yeah, we still did wait),
- at 6 AM when I went to sleep, you were streaming quarterfinal DEMOS with fake excitement, with everyone knowing results. I'd probably stay up if it was live, but watching people faking orgasms while watching demos can only be compared to watching Shootmania. Commentator screaming and I'm like Zzzz...

I'm not sure if you understand that huge part of your tournament viewers are European. And that posting results is not the best way to get people to watch replays later on.

I stayed for the whole Carmack keynote, basically drifting in and out (when the stream wasn't fucking shit as donkey balls, at 240p I could barely watch) while watching other stuff, because I was waiting for the live tournament, the DUEL MASTERS.

Then I am told while Carmack's keynote goes over 4 hours or something that the matches have already been played. Shit. Fuck.

At that point I do want to watch the demos, because of course the quakecon twitter has twittered all the results or something and there's no way to not know, and the result I wanted to watch was dahanga v. rapha.

But you go offline for an hour.

At that point, in that whole hour in the middle of the fucking night when I had work in the morning, me and a whole heap of people simply said: not fucking worth it. Good night.

If you won't admit your coverage is shit, fuck you.

Am i the only one that feels that this QuakeCon is a bit different? I mean, in a way that there's this strange aura of don't-give-a-fuckery about it. Like it's heralding the end. Like there is nothing beyond this one, final insult.

The past years, when things went to shit you'd at least have people scrambling all over the place, you could feel they really were trying their best to fix whatever it was that went wrong or was broken at the time. And, you know, i'm sure Zoot, Dis and Jehar really are trying. They care, i'm sure of it. But do the QCon staff? They clearly didn't test the stream beforehand. They clearly have no idea what a "schedule" is. Their priorities are FUCKED. Showing Carmack for five fucking hours instead of streaming the games? Is this JohndronesonforseveralhoursaboutinterestingbutnoncriticalstuffCon or fucking QUAKECON? God damnit.

~3 months till Adroits. Those three months will still go by faster than the god damn keynote.

Yep, I got the same feeling. It's all in one mixture - late announcement, lack of top players, unpublished groups until the very start of an event, practically no coverage (almost no games, no interviews etc), no hype videos or demonstration of QCon area, don't-give-a-fuck atmosphere - hell, there were no ways to contact zoot/dis/production staff directly - they got to know about fps issues after 1 hour of this 15-fps stream.

I'll remember next year to treat quakecon as a peice of comedy rather than a gaming event, I got worked up this year because I was expecting a gaming event, if I just took a step back and looked at it as a comedy show, i would have been laughing all night instead of getting angry.

By the way, right now Chernobyl Nuclear Station is quite safe place to work. Yes, there is a bit of radiation inside of sarcophagus, but on the other side, your working day inside of it is limited by 15 minutes, which is a great plus.

Nobody else than esr and the staff organizing the tournament gives a fuck about said tournament, let alone quake. Grow some balls and deal with it. It's only still being done because it's been done since 97 or something and they'd get shit for the sake of giving shit by random websites who don't actually care either.

I need a vod for the keynote though, had to take a piss break, a smoke break then a 20mins qw break and I missed something like 1/46th of it.
