It's glossy plastic on the sides, the same as the Habu. There's rubber all over the mouse except for where you hold it infact :)

They probably messed up in the firmware. It makes no sense to me how this can happen. I honestly sat there for a good 30 minutes looking at it, switch dpi without touching the mouse etc. These are spot on results that I got every time.

Pretty much 100% identical to the IE3 and WMO (about 3mm).

Which is weird actually because I'm sure there was talk that it was meant to be set up so that any kind of lift turned off the tracking.

It's a little strange since the Habu does have two buttons there. I would guess that the clean look was ruined by seeing buttons on the top surface.

I'm dying to see the results for an mx510 !

I remember the specs for the 510 were just slightly above that of the 500's and I can't wait to see how it ranks up in comparison to the others.

...after all I was one of "those" who spent that extra buck for a 510 when I was looking for a new mouse :/ People said the difference between the 500 and 510 were negligible and I should just buy a 500 instead.

love to see if I was justified in chosing a 510 over the 500 at the time :)

And these are really silly stuff, I mean, what really impresses me is that it seems that they don't do any testing or analisys of the designs/hardware... While this is not restricted to Razer, mouse-wise, it's not an excuse to not do it.

Excellent review sujoy, you continue to set the standard. :)

You didn't mention the perfect control speeds that the mouse can obtain at 125 and 500Hz, however. Some people may not be able to run at the highest frequency available, and it would be nice to know how the mouse stacks up against the competition at stock settings.

Razer look to have produced a quality product and i have a high probability of buying this mouse when my existing 510 breaks.

Personally I would use a higher polling rate just to reduce the mouse lag. Other than that I don't think it would make much difference.

Changing the USB polling rate does not affect the response graph at all.

Sujoy was kind enough not to throw this at you face, but I just hate people that "don't read well" and blame someone / something else.

I just uninstalled the software and it still works completely fine. The profiles are stored on the mouse and still seem to work correctly.

Mouserate still reporting 500Hz on the DA, and 125Hz on the WMO also plugged in.

I'm not sure what would happen if I had never install the drivers at all. Can't test that without a different PC.

The choices you can set up in the profile are -

USB Polling rate: 125Hz / 500Hz / 1000Hz
Resolution: 450dpi / 900dpi / 1800dpi

If you are not using DirectInput with an 1800 dpi mouse you could be screwed anyway.

But why wouldn't this work? As far as I can tell, the 6th notch on the windows slider is 1:1. I move my 400dpi mouse 4" to cross my 1600 pixel desktop.

I have always played RtCW/ET/DoD with sens 3.5 @ 400 dpi. When I switched to the MX518 I just used 3.5/4 @ 1600dpi and now that I'm using the IE3 again I'm using 3.5, and the sensibility is exactly the same (always without acceleration).

Maybe all those games do not use dinput?

I haven't tested non-DirectInput. From what I understand it takes mouse cursor position from the windows screen. The end result is a little strange and includes various acceleration factors that Windows builds in to the mouse response. I guess it follows that the sensitivity is affected by acceleration slightly and so you can't just divide the DPI out to get the same sensitivity.

Is there no way to change ET to use direct input? Or would that be a huge change in your mouse response, and not be a good idea?

Technically you can use aion's Mouse Force program for DirectInput but it doesn't feel good at all. It feels nothing like DirectInput implementation in Q3 for example.

I was under the impression that it was not wise to use DI in Q3. Doesn't it add a few milliseconds of input delay?

At any rate, I can't use it, because when I release +attack, my weapons continue firing. Or at other times, I press +attack and nothing happens.

All these tests should be done without DI. Not everyone can use it, and not everyone who can, wants to. Not everyone uses Windows, for that matter.

Retest IMO. :-)

From what I understand non DirectInput has major flaws, particularly negative acceleration/clipping of response because you hit the edge of the windows screen. I'm no programming guru so I would need someone to write an interface to measure mouse response in a way that games would do so without using DirectInput.

But honestly I would have thought a large majority of people use DirectInput for gaming and also that it's vastly superior.

I think it probably is superior for most games, but not Q3, because of an input delay issue. I believe the proof of this is somewhere on ESR.

For people who use an LCD monitor, or vsync on their CRT, or anything else which might add a few milliseconds of input delay, they probably aren't bothered by a few more. But some people like to eliminate every possible millisecond of "lag," and those people would want to play Q3 on a CRT with vsync disabled and in_mouse -1.

It's a higher resolution so in some cases it *may* be better for accuracy. It all depends on your screen resolution, your field of view and your sensitivity. If you have a high sensitivity and high resolution you might be skipping pixels when you turn @ 400dpi.

i have a shit mouse right now and when i raise my windows sensitivity it seems as if the mouse pointer actually skips over a few pixels when i move it around. Like when i use the lowest sens it makes a stop on every pixel but on maximum it is like it only stops every third or so. Do you know why it is like that, could it be due to the low dpi? Its a basic optical mouse 1.0a, it skips, acts very weird etc if it makes any difference :)

If I move my pointer speed in the control panel above the default I quickly start skipping pixels in windows. That is using my default MS WMO. So 400dpi is pretty much optimised for the default setting. If you want your mouse pointer to move faster in a 'good' way then you need to get a higher dpi mouse really.

My one was pre-opened and repackaged so I can't be 100% sure. However profile 1 was set at 1800dpi and 500Hz. I have since uninstalled the Razer software and it still responds at this setting.

The weight is identical to the Habu, from my rough guess at holding it. It's a little heavier than a WMO and a little lighter than a MX500. I need some scales really...

As CPLains said, I would have just reduced the sensitivity value in game to either one half or one quarter depending on which dpi value you wanted to hit. Technically all the mouse should do for lower DPI is to just divide its output by half. I don't really understand how that makes the whole mouse go wrong...

Reducing sensitivity ingame wont help you get passed Q3 negative accel issues. But reducing sensitivity in windows could work, but its basicly the same as setting the mouse to 900 or 450 cpi @drivers. If the the drivers have problems are lower cpi, windows settings might result in the same problem.

And yes that does kill the mouse for ET players :P

BTW when I said I was suprised reducing sensitivity made the mouse go wrong, I meant changing dpi on the hardware. It should just divide the output by two or four before sending info out of the mouse. It's pretty messed up that the mouse itself starts screwing up when you switch it from 1800 to 900dpi.

Thats why I felt the need to comment :P I see no reason why the mouse would work flawlessly at 1800 dpi but not at lower dpi modes which indeed just divide the data by 2 or 4. I realy hope they can fix it.

If they do it would be the nr1 mouse for many ETplayers. The mouse seems like it is made for the ET game :P The shape looks great, a bit bigger for better grip. The specs look even nicer as ET uses an insane low sensitivity. Its basicly the responsivness of a copperhead, the tracking of a diamondback and the shape of ms.

The only bad side I can see is the bad performances at lower dpi modes and messing up the 'standard' 400-800-1600dpi values. Maybe newbies will buy the mouse because their old one only has 1600dpi, but to most serious gamers its just harder to find back their old sens and nobody cares whether he plays 400 or 450 dpi.

when i compare the 450dpi graph of deathadder to the ms1.1
graphs i wonder IF there is a real acutal issue overall.

i compared to the ms1.1 because atm im using it at 125hz
and i can move my mouse without negative accel @ 30cm for 360°
- after that i compared it to the ms1.1@1000hz graph and
is it possible that the deathadder@450 dpi still has a better
skipping point than when the ms1.1@1000hz starts to get
problems with the sensor ?
so about how many cm for one turn we talk of ?
skips the deathadder when somebody make a very fast 40cm turn
@ 450dpi ?

to those who dont know why some dont like more than 400dpi:
its not possible in some games to use direct input. this result in
negative accel then with middle or lowsens with highdpi.
2nd reason, the direct input behavior is not the same as the
standard win32 input feeling. so some dont like direct input
feeling of the mouse. but win32 input only works accurate with 400dpi.

My guess is that they took a 1600dpi sensor, which can be set to 400, 800 and 1600DPI in hardware, and changed the focal lens on request from the marketing department. Can't release a 1600DPI mouse when there are lots of other led opticals with 1600DPI and virtually no skipping problems. That leaves you with 12.5% higher sensitivty on raw input (400-->450; 800-->900; 1600-->1800) .

Higher DPI is better regardless of the game or whether you're a low or high sens player. I also play primarily ET (well, I rarely game anymore, but that's beside the point), and I use 1600 DPI. Here's why:

Set DPI @ 400, sensitivity @ 5, and move the smallest possible increments. Now set DPI @ 800, sens @ 2.5 and repeat. Now DPI 1600, sens 1.25. And if possible, DPI 2000, sens 1.0.

Notice how you can move as little as one pixel at higher DPI, but not at 400 DPI? The above are all the "same" sensitivity, but all are clearly not equal.

Usually, 800 DPI will be enough, but 400 definitely is not.

You have no clue what you are talking about. Even the biggest european ET noob will tell you you get negative accel when using 1600dpi. @ 800 dpi you might still get negative accel depending on your rmode / mouserate.

Again, im speaking from an ET pov, wich doesnt doesnt have decent direct input. And about high dpi being better: yeah, the earth is flat and stuff.

If you are a spastic, frantic, nervous player, perhaps you always suffer from it. ET is a game which favors calm, relaxed, smooth playing. You don't see many flickshots in ET.

What the average European noob says is irrelevant to what I know.

Looks like the Earth really is flat...

P.S. Did you even try the scenario I outlined, or did you just rush in to (anonymously) spout a load of BS?

No as I know you 75% of the players out there WILL get negative accel issues, even when they dont know it, when using 1600dpi. If you use rmode6 or higher, a high fps and a high usbrate you might be able to run @ 800dpi, but you would still get neg accel when doing quick turns (siderape, backrape). But, I try to do what you said knowing it doesnt make a difference.

I am a low sens ET player who uses an MX518 @ 1600 DPI and I have no negative accel whatsoever in actual practice.

He is totaly correct about ET requiring a solid and smooth aim. Making very irratic and fast movements will make your bullets get more spread, but what he doesnt mention is that the spread is affected by the mouserate you use, so the best possible setup for ET would be 250fps and 125hz, allowing you to play at 800dpi due to the high framerate, but still 1600dpi will give to much negative acceleration, even with that high a framerate.

I tried the 800dpi/half sens thing and the mouse only gets more nervous imho, maybe if you are used to it you like it, but i see no reason to raise my dpi, as i can hit every pixel with 400 :P

Imho high dpi = placebo. But placebo's work so stick to it if you like it xD

Also it's worth noting that the DeathAdder shown at CPL in December was not using the new sensor. At least that's what I've been told. This would explain why the one shown there had skipping problems.

Damn I should have included that in the review. I'll add it somewhere...

The Krait has the lightest buttons of the mice I've tested. Then the Copperhead requires a little more push. The DeathAdder is slightly firmer than Copperhead buttons. I would say it has heavier buttons than the other Razer mice, and not as 'hair trigger' as the original Boomslangs or the Razer Krait which need very little pushing to click on.

If you compare it to the Habu, the Microsoft buttons have a more positive click action than Razer. You feel like you're clicking more seriously with the Microsoft mouse. Logitech are the same - very positive action on the buttons.

I wouldn't like to say which style is better for gaming!

That's just perfect!
The best thing about razer mice was the feel of the buttons. I can't explain it in a rational way, it just made my gamestyle much more aggressive. To put those buttons in a right-handed shell is a dream come true.
I'll definitely buy one of these, it´ll give my MX500 a hard fight for that place in the icemat ;P

..it would be fair to say that no mouse you can buy today comes close to matching the incredibly performance of the DeathAdder. To top it off, Razer have packaged this incredible mouse in arguably the best looking body.

That sounds as if it comes straight from the box its sold in ;) Nice review though. I have 2 questions which are not addressed in the article (i think), but for me are important:
- are the mousebuttons sensitive or not? I am used to rest my fingers on the buttons with my mx500 and with many other mice i tend to click the buttons accidently cause they are so sensitive. I really like the mx500 for this cause it reduces rsi/stress/etc.
- the software that came with it: do you HAVE to install it, or can you install the driver only? is it always running in the background? how much memory does it use? does it have annoying auto update features? ;) personally, i dont like those of software (ie mouseware, which sux) and thats why i ask :)

By the way I was worried that I'm coming over too positive about the mouse but really I'm just describing the things I measured using a test that anyone could repeat if they had the inclination. My original MouseScore had Razer mice languishing behind Logitech. In particular the Copperhead, judged on performance alone, is a weak weak mouse. Then the same test puts the DeathAdder head and shoulders above all the other mice.

If you had a suspicious mind you might wonder if I'm swaying the test in Razer's favour. I guess you either have to trust I'm providing accurate results or do them yourself to some extent. Although having said that ESR doesn't have any commercial ties to Razer (or any other mouse manufacturer) and for the gaming centres there's not been any decisions yet. Although now I see the results for the DA I'm more interested in getting them at the PCs of the gaming centre.

Not quite sure how to ask this but how sensitive are the left and right mouse triggers compared to other typical mice? I remember my freinds boomslang needing very little pressure to click it down, 'hair trigger' persay compared to the mice I used at the time. And even now using my mx500 I wish it was more hair trigger like.

Sounds like quite a high sensitivity for a quake player, something around 8cm - 360 degrees if the drivers are similar to MS.

Does the DA have that weird "edge" on the right side of the mouse where you grip it, or is it smooth like the 3.0? I don't know why, but that edge on the habu makes it uncomfortable for me to use after like 10 minutes, so it'll really blow if the DA has it too :x

I would say the right side of the mouse is pretty smooth, just like the Intellimouse 3.0. But then again I thought the Habu was smooth on the right side too! Unless you're talking about the glow pipe bits, which don't really stick out on the Habu I bought...

The edge is on the bottom part of the right side (should be the glossy plastic area), usually where your little finger goes. Judging by the CG pics of the DA on the net and the photo you took of it here, it doesn't look like it's there, but the pic is dark so the shadow could hide it.

Sorry if its a stupid question! I just don't wanna order at $130nzd mouse in and find out the DA is crappo for me :<

Im surprised you could rate it so high when the mouse is clearly defective.
also you know the problems using such a high dpi in quake 4, 800 dpi is the max you can reliably use and not have your mouse fail to respond when you flick. does this mouse also exhibit that at the only non defective resolution of 1800 DPI?

I had severe problems with it in multiple mice including the mx518 which is not laser. but two of the other mice are laser.
Turn the mice all the way up to 1600 dpi and move the mouse as fast as your arm allows in quake 4, the cursor doesnt budge with laser mice, and has severe negative accel with the 518.
turn the setting down to 800 dpi, the cursor moves normally. try the 1600 dpi in another game, the cursor moves normally. I cant see how youre unaware of the q4 specific mouse problems when there were several threads about it on your forums, In the q4 section early in q4 release, but maybe you never read them. This lead to the belief that q4 is not compatible with laser mice, which I havent tried it with 1.3 since I got rid of my laser mice but I assume is still the case.

Since a lot of games are using only 16 elements, a buffer overflow occurs.

At 100fps with 500hz, there is potentially 5 relative Y, 5 relative X, and 5 button actions, requiring a total of 15 elements, which is just fine when using a buffer of 16 elements.

I just checked the Quake 3 source code:

I would assume that Quake 4 picks up a new value for the mouse for every frame. If that's the case then a 16 bit buffer on DirectInput would be plenty sufficient.

60 (fps) * 2 ^ 16 ~ 4 million counts per second

At top speed (4m/s) the DA reads 280,000 counts per second.

I might be looking at this the wrong way though.

I really need to register an account, I'm posting from work now
anyway, I'm not really sure if I fully understand how the buffer works myself.. but looking at the above example it seems the mouse refresh rate is divided by the fps to figure out how much info is sent per frame. if I'm doing my math right that means 16.666666666667 as opposed to the above example's 10. So by having a lower fps you actually have to buffer more for each frame, this works out to needing a buffer of 50 for 60fps @ 1000hz, & 25 @ 500hz which either way is a lot of overflow and could explain why it might be more of a problem in Quake 4 if they kept the same buffer size as Quake 3.

standard win32 api can only manage up to 400dpi without
resulting negative accel.
ofc you only see this if you have relativly lowsens. maybe
middlesens - but its easy to test it by yourself:
first make a 360degree turn very very slow and measure
the cm.
then make the same cm moving on the pad what you measured
with a very fast mousemove. now if on your monitor you dont
has a 360degree turn like before then you get negative accel !

sorry cannot find the exact textfile atm which explains the whole
calculating.
but its really easy to test it by yourself. you only have to try a game
without direct input (wich can be set in qw or q3(in_mouse -1)
with a high dpi mouse(from 800dpi up).
the way i described above - ok to give the rusult if you dont wanna
test it.
as i remember direct input calculates the movement always like
a vector movement. the startpoint is not important only
the movement between startpoint and endpoint of the mouse
movement. there is no limitation in the size of the movement.
with the win32 api the starting point of the movement is in combination with the resolution and a real coordinate on the screen.
so if you cross with fast and long mousemovement the window
coordinates the crosshair cannot be calculated the right way and there is a negative acceleration. --- note --- this is only how i try to
remember the details - maybe not the very exact truth, if somebody can explain it better ...
but its a fact that if you use 800dpi and no direct input you result
in negative acceleration.
ofc how much the fault is depends on your sensitivity and how fast
you move your mouse.

i dont have a 450dpi mouse or one of the newer ones with
adjustable dpi between 400 and 800dpi.
but one min ago i tested it with the logitech g1 (800dpi) to get an
impression again and numbers.

with 800dpi and no direct input with 40cm@360°:

with normal mousemovement there were only up from 1-3cm
lost in a whole turn. most time maximum was around 10degrees
out of the 360.

when moving extremly fast the loosing cm went from 2-9cm out of
the 40cm. thats about 20-85degrees out of 360.
^-------
important !! is that the g1 tracking speed is not fast enough for very
fast mousemoves around 40cm despite the dpi problem.
this means that some cm are always lost with this mouse with
40cm@360 and fast mousemovement (this doesnt count for the first test)
----------------------------------------------------------------------
the result is that out of the average 4-8cm loosing in 40cm with 800dpi i minus about 1/3 up to 1/2 to the tracking speed problem.
->that counted in i believe with 450dpi there shouldnt be much problems around 40cm if a mouse is fast enough and has no negative accel because of slow tracking in direct input too.
this and the comparison between 400 800 1600:
so i guess its hardly noticeable with the da (maybe not existant)

This was kind of the point of the response graphs - to quantify skipping/negative acceleration and work out the speed where it happens! But yes of course I went old-school and played Quake 3 and Quake 4 for a while, throwing the mouse around as fast as I could. There was no skipping at all, and no negative acceleration that I could feel.

The DA is slightly 'humpier' than the WMO.

Compared to the MX500/G5/518 shape, the DA is taller at flared at the front whereas the Logitech mice narrow and dip at the front. Also the right side is slightly more sloping on the DA, whereas the Logitech mice have more to grip, but you don't get a thumb recess on the DA.

Really great review!

I ordered the DA yesterday before the review was on and now I'm glad I did because this mouse did not only look awesome and feel awesome (had the chance to get my hands on it on the Dimension6 LAN Party in Bremen, GER) it also seems to be as good a gaming device as it looks... can't wait to have my own DA @ home.

*edit* The only thing I found not that perfect were the mousebuttons... as the whole top is only one large piece, the buttons miss some stability to the left and right and are too easy overbended in that directions... */edit*

I need to do more testing. Also it's going to take ages because it means retesting lots of mice on lots of surfaces. It takes about 30 minutes per mouse per surface at the moment so I need to streamline the process a bit more otherwise I'll be sitting here for months!

Really good review as always. Looks like a great mouse in practise, even though it doesn't matter vastly to me because I'm pretty high sens player. I have a few questions on the shape though. Firstly is this mouse good for palming? How does it compare to palming an MX518? Also, how much space is there under the side-buttons? The thing I like about the MX518 is that the side-buttons are quite high up, and fairly far back, meaning I can rest my thumb underneath them but still be able to reach far enough to click around the centre of the second one. This is owed some amount to the actual thumb indent, but from the looks of the DA the area is curved nicely round there so I guess it's good for resting the thumb. Also, I know you mentioned the click-ability of the buttons earlier to some extent, but are the side ones in particular stiff enough to with-stand a slight pressure from the thumb? With my MX518 when I press the second side-button I tend to lean on the first slightly (else I'd have to curve my thumb really far out), but it's not much pressure so the firmness of those buttons with-stands a potential click easily.
Finally, I've just got to say this is the best visually pleasing mouse I've seen... I also noticed in screeny of the drivers you posted that you can turn the lights on the scroll and logo on and off :P

The size is very similar to the MX518 body so you shouldn't have a problem palming the mouse. However as you say there is no thumb indent so it doesn't have the same kind of space below the thumb buttons as the Logitech. When I'm holding the mouse I find my thumb is slightly resting on the buttons. However those side buttons have a more positive click so they don't get accidentally pressed, at least not easily. So yes, it is possible to press the back button without the forward one when your thumb is resting on both.

Thanks for that info. Looks like this might be suitable for me... not that my MX518 has stopped working or anything, but I like change once in a while. Besides, having sent back the Tarantula because it didn't work well and I didn't like it so much makes up enough money for the DeathAdder easily :P
One more thing, reading about the profiles confused me a bit... what does the button on the underside do compared to the driver profiles? I'm assuming the underside button does DPI presets that work without the drivers, and then the drivers change DPI, button assignments, etc.

Well, I'm a bit disappointed because my DA doesn't seem to store the profiles in the mouse. The profile button works fine if I have the drivers installed, but if I try the mouse in a different computer, I loose all my profiles.

I thought my mouse was defective or something, after reading what you said about the profiles working fine without the drivers. But then, reading the DA Master Guide, N°6 Using your mouse, Switching profiles:

I'll probably buy this mouse right now if I can run it at 125hz/1800dpi, without using drivers. I hate drivers :)

That's assuming it will run at its best performance level at 125hz/1800dpi/no drivers.

though I really wish, like others, that 400dpi was an option. 125hz/400dpi, with the performance shown in these tests, would be great.

Well... I doubt there's 125hz/1800dpi profile out of the box... maybe you can go to your mum's pc and bug that one with the drivers, create the profile and plug the mouse back into your pc without the drivers ever being installed on that machine...

Once the Profiles are adjusted to your needs, you can use them on any pc w/o driver install

I read somewhere that you shouldn't use high dpi with a low sensitivity (or low dpi with high sens) setting because you'll get negative accel (or skipping). Any truth in that?

If you're using DirectInput (as I was in my tests) then it's not true. There's no problem with using high dpi on the mouse and low sens in the game.

If the game doesn't use DirectInput then there are other clipping factors involved to do with the screen size. I haven't looked into this yet so maybe it's something I should measure in the future.

this is great news, i remember getting excited about the mouse when it was first announced, then a few weeks later, someone claimed that it skipped, so of course i didn't bother keeping an eye on it. so yeah, good thing i don't intend on using the on-the-fly DPI changer, i can't imagine anyone really using it in-game anyway.

Looking at my hand on my MX518, then looking at the pictures of the DeathAdder, I can see there's no way I could hold that mouse without my thumb constantly pressing the side buttons. Luckily, I don't use side buttons, and always disable them in all my mouses, but still I wonder how annoying it would be to feel them clicking all the time.

I'd probably open up the case and physically remove them.

I fully agree with oRo, i've already done this in my MX500 to make it lighter by removing the top and thumb button's pcbs. I don't use those buttons when I'm gaming, and for everything else I use a logitech trackball, so I don't mind not having thumb buttons on the mouse.
The way I think of modding the DA is to remove the thumb buttons, fill the holes with something and put some of that steelgrip on the sides of the mouse, so I can get that grippy rubberised feel of the MX500.

Oh, and also, remove the gay lighting blue leds. ;P

I'm curious if you could also compare the Logitech G5 with the G5 update 1.1 and the recently released 1.2 firmware update. I am just curious if their updates have any effect on the G5 performance =) and this is the best way to find out!

Sujoy, do you know what the default dpi and polling rate is without installing any drivers? I'm asking because I use linux; and I was hoping that I didn't have to boot into windows, install the drivers, store the data in the mouse (as you say it does), and then boot back into linux; hoping that its all stored correctly. If the defaults are 1800dpi @500hz i'll be happy!

I couldn't say because the mouse I received wasn't brand new from the factory. I'm assuming that it's not new because of the way that the cable was wound and tagged. The DA I received had all profiles set to 1800dpi/500Hz.

I would imagine that a factory default DA would have each profile set with different values, so that you could find the one for 1800/1000 just by scrolling through. I'd need confirmation from Razer but I would assume they'd set the top performance value for people that didn't know anything about the drivers.

I can't get it to malfunction at all, not even 1800dpi 1000hz low sens on a qpad ct, while moving as fast as I possible can :p

And the best part? I can turn of the lightshow, that razer mice usually have, in the setup :D

The issue with the DeathAdder comes into play with the surface you desire to play with it on. I e-mailed the tech support for razer and this was their response: "The Death Adder will not work on a glass surface. We do not recommend an Aluminum surface, it will work, yet it will not track well."
That alone will prevent the mouse from performing on three quarters (3/4) of the high performance mouse pads out there. Let alone, Razer owns the ExactMat which is an advertised high performance mouse pad made from aluminum.

I wanted to use the DeathAdder with my Icemat. I had a DiamondBack Plasma which was infrared like the DA, It worked very well on the icemat and ulti-mat. I assumed the DA would do as well... since it has comparable technology.

There is only way to find out the truth! Sujoy, please, get an icemat and do some preliminary testing, just to see if the DA works at all, don't bother gathering data and plotting fancy graphs!

If everything else fails, what do you guys think of transplanting the hardware of an old MX500 int the body of the DA?

I have about 20 mouse pads here. None of them are glass or aluminum.

I can only think of Icemat that is made of glass. And I can't think of any aluminium at all right now.

Majority of the public will still view "laser" mice as superior, because it sounds a whole lot flashier and high tech. Looking at any general hardware forum, you'll see people standing by their copperheads, G5s, G7s, and MX1000s.

Also Habu's DPI is still higher than DA, so any person who is shopping for a mouse and sees them side by side, will probably get the Habu thinking it's newer/better.

It definitely must have been a different sensor, or at least an earlier bugged version of the new sensor. You can check in Buzztiger's pic of the PCB that his mouse is already a Rev. E.

That means Razer took it's time with this product fixing it's flaws, instead of releasing it in a Rev.A stage.
Sujoy's DA S/N seems to be even more recent, so it may even be a new revision.
Hopefully by the time Rev. X comes out it will support glass mousepads xD

I get huge negative accel on mx518 @ 1600 DPI. I use 400 DPI and it's great. For me it performs only slightly better @ 800 DPI than mx510. And yes, I have ridiculously low sensitivity :)

What are you impressions of the acuracy of all the mice you reviewed as a whole? Do any seem to stick out more then others?

For instance, my older boomslang is much more acurate then my Microsoft Optical Wheel mouse.

Also, I'm considering getting this DeathAdder, a MX518, or a Razer Diamondback. I'm leaning towards then diamondback because I'll be playing in high sensetivity.

Do you feel that the DeathAdder is more precise, and acurate then the ones mentioned above? I'm all about acuracy, and my Wheel mouse optical is complete shit, it jumps pixels like crazy.

Maybe you don't want to ask me because I've been using the WMO for a long long time and have had no problems with it jumping pixels. I imagine the top players who use WMO also don't have a problem with it, but maybe we all have a much lower sensitivity than you.

I'm not sure what the definition of accuracy is. If it's 100% about pixel skipping, then your accuracy measure is pretty much the same as resolution, in which case this mouse @ 1800dpi should be fine for you.

If we're talking about consistent readings at each speed, lack of sawtooth, or anything else regarding the value of each reading taken, I'm afraid I haven't been able to build a way to measure that accurately. The A4tech mouse judge program doesn't seem compatible with the DA drivers. I would imagine, however that this would be ok on any new mouse.

The DA seems fine for me when I'm playing. However the WMO also feels fine for me. I use a medium-low sens (sensitivity 5 in Quake @ 400dpi) so the sens is high enough that I'm not really pushing the mouse at any speeds close to 2m/s and low enough that I'm not skipping pixels.

No reason to switch *unless* you want the slug shape, or you have skipping problems. I doubt with medium/high sens you'll get skipping problems with the Copperhead.

just to make it clear about direct input and ET :
any mouse will get this trouble @high dpi, it depends on screen resolution, mouserate, fps dpi and sensi. i dont believe it has anything to do with the mouse.
when you tell the mouse works fine just at max dpi, it may be an issue for low sens etplayorz. on the other hand, this is the very first mouse that would probably not have neg accel from the sensor itself.

so about us shit low sens etplayers, i believe this mouse is great as long as we got huge screen and loads of fps or direct input exe (what may seems like cheat for cb as it s an external appli? )

the joke about non direct input in ET is that former versions of ET had the cvar to chose DI or not that is now forced to non direct ...

i would love to try this mouse and do believe the technologie is the best atm but i m lefty :'( just have to wait as razerguy told me next one would be for lefties. but when ..............

i wont make a debate about something that anyway is now dead. but there was, and even the in_mouse -1 was really different from 1.

i bet most peeps never seen the difference as most people will never notice a mouse accel or neg accel. cause they simply dont pay attention and use such high sensitivity so they cant see the small reaction lags and never push the mouse to its limit.

about bani or others deciding to get rid of it, i cant blame them cause there was a lot of bugged issues, but one more time we had choice. so uber low sens could play the way they liked (even with a few bugs and some lag in mouse movements)

As written before and in the forum post: it never did exist, neither in RtCW nor in ET. Only Q3 has it implemented.
I guess RtCW wasn't build on the version of the Q3-Engine, which had DI implemented and most likely no one ever bothered.

So i was wandering is it a small problem that can b solved easily? regarding the deteriorating performance at these dpis (coz im a low sens player).

sujoy, can you please tell me if there is a difference between deathadder and intelli explorer 3.0 from the wide point of view.
The good thing about intelli 3 is that is wide enough on the right side so that your ring and small fingers can rest on it comfortably.
how do you feel it on deathadder?
one problem with copperhead is the main buttons. They are so big that you cannot rest your fingers on the mouse if you palm it. Is it possible the same thing with DA? And also, the copperhead creates some sort of uncomfortable position of the main buttons fingers because you have to rest your fingers on the mouse buttons, and the way they are oriented you will keep them more forward then oriented to the mousepad.
those things I don't like about current mice.
That's the reason I also dislike mx5xx series.
The orientation of the fingers is forward and it shoul be around 30 degrees to the mouse pad.
The righ side of the mx500 is not as wide as it should be and because of this you don't have any comfy position of the ring and small fingers.

The right side is about the same shape. When I play FPS seriously I switch from three fingers on buttons (left/wheel/right) to just two fingers (left/right) to get a firmer grip on the mouse. I find this gives me better aim for hitscan. I had no problem gripping the DA with thumb on the left side and ring/pinky on the right side.

For the buttons, they do click from around the top of the hump, just a little forward from the middle of the mouse. I was ok palming it, but I guess it depends on your hands.

Interesting, I hold the MX500 in the same way, although all the people I´ve seen using righthanded mice, either MX5XX or MS3.0, would palm the mouse and play with all fingers extended. They think it's weird that I play with the pinky curled back, but that's the only way of getting any precision on fast wrist movements.

Regarding plugging in the DeathAdder without drivers.

It seems to run perfectly fine at the DPI preset on the profile. The USB rate is a bit strange though. I'm sure it's set at 500Hz but the sample program is showing 250Hz. Maybe that's the maximum rate without drivers?

I have just found the icemat that softtrading left me, so I was able to test the DA in a run-around-Q3 setup :).

The DA skips *badly* on the icemat. I set Q3 sensitivity down to 0.5 with the mouse still at 1800dpi, and it was skipping even for movement purposes, let alone flicking the mouse.

I really need to start testing mice vs pads soon I suppose, I didn't realise there would be so much difference between different surfaces.

But as a guideline: Do NOT use this mouse with an icemat.

I have both the silver and black icemat and the deathadder (from tiger direct) tracks without skipping.

I do however i have the lift off problem, which seems to be worse on the black icemat (but not significantly)

There is also the positive accel issue.

This was done without any drivers and on the 1.3 firmware (stock).

I'm almost certain u don't have the same sensor we all have, Sujoy.

For those in the UK at least who want one, just order it from the euro RazerStore. I ordered mine mid-thursday, and it got here today. The package was labeled Meroncourt, a UK company, so I presume Razer have a few different locations all under the RazerStore banner, so other euro countries might still be out of luck :{

Also, the deathadder box is specifically labelled 'Nova Blue', so I guess it'll not be long until the Copperhead style Green and Red ones show up.

I got mine yesterday and I have accel, not negative, I mean positive. I installed regitry patch in order to remove WinXP accel and It's still there. I then Installed Razer Drivers but even when accel is disabled, it's still there. Also tried to change dpi/usb rate/winXP sensi/driver sensi, I still have this f***** accel. When I plug my krait, it's perfect, no accel :/
And for those who asked I have a white icemat (1st edition) and I cant make it skip.

GGL did a test and they gave it a 7/10 because of mouse buttons bugging out and something about it not beeing able to run 1000Hz. Have you had any of theese problems Sujoy?

My quick thoughts on the deathadder after playing about with it for a couple of hours:

1) Absolutely no skipping or noticeable 'negative acceleration' no matter how much I throw it about.
2)The 3G 'no tracking when lifting up' stuff is bollocks. If anything, the distance for it to stop tracking is slightly higher than that of my Fat2020. It's low enough that I think I can get used to it without negatively affecting me, though.
3)The top buttons really are very light to touch. it's taking a bit of getting used to after the hard clicks of the 2020, but not particularly offensive.
4)Wheel is a bit too loose for my liking, but the shape of the top buttons keeps my fingers away from it, so I haven't accidentally scrolled it yet, unlike the 2020.
5)The sides are high enough that neither my thumb or little finger scrape off the pad when I'm playing, while still remaining comfortable.
6)This is probably the first gaming mouse I've had where I can use both side buttons without accidentally clicking the wrong one. The side buttons are also quite a bit stiffer than the top ones. For those who don't use side buttons at all, there's enough space below the side buttons to rest your thumb without scraping off the pad.
8)The 'rubber' on the top of the pad feels pretty much the same as the side plastic on the old MX series mice.
9) The Razer logo is either pulsing, or off, you can't just have it permanently on.
10) The blue is a noticeably different shade than the blue on the Barracuda, which seems somewhat pointless.
11) There's a bug in the drivers which makes using 'Universal Scrolling / Mouse3' unusable. Enabling it on a button works in windows, but causes the mouse pointer to go diagonally down in DirectInput games. I'd imagine that's quite easily fixable in a driver update.
12 )Quake4's mouse code really is shit isn't it? Quake3 works fine at 1800dpi, but a flick movement in Quake4 just craps out mid-way through. It breaks less when using m_smooth 2 or above, but who really wants to add even more lag to Q4? Looks like I'll have to use 900dpi for now.

Overall it's a pretty good mouse, and certainly more useful to a wider audience than the Fatal1ty mice. I just hope it doesn't explode or something after a month.

I have the same problem, using windows drivers the wheel can be used as a universal scroll button, but when i play ut and use the wheel button as a secondary fire button the screen stutters.

10mm off the pad and the mouse is still tracking, mouse is not doing what its advertised to do.

This one is driving me nutz, i had no acc with my copperhead but i cant get rid of acc with the DA, tried with and without the drivers and used xp reg fixes, windows is not causing the acc, need a driver/firmware update to fix this a.s.a.p!

Very strange. The DA I had to test here definitely doesn't track 10mm off the pad (more like 3-4mm).

Also I do not get positive acceleration with this one.

I wonder if there are different versions of the hardware. Also I haven't updated with the new firmware yet.

That might be the difference, perhaps the old firmware sujoy has is better than the latest one, my mouse came with firmware 1.04

Using a razor mantis speed pad, and measured my mouse sense playing ut, i can do a slow 35cm 360 deg turn and a faster 30cm turn. Its just a small amount of acceleration, but i would still like to get rid of it.

First impression @ Razerblueprints was also that it's giving noticeable acceleration.
Also, lift-off-distance is unbearably high (~10 mm).

Gonna buy it as soon as Firmware solves those problems. So most probably I'm not gonna buy it all.

every bugs you noticed atm are the usual razer unfinished firmware/driver troubles that will most likely be fixed in 1 or 2 months.
even the db had positive accel when it first came out so i m pretty confident about this being solved.

but i m much concerned about that lift off distance cause it s not the kind of thing they might be able to change with just firmware.

could the guys getting those 10mm tracking tell us what mouse pad they use? maybe it exists a fitting combo ... ( i know i m a dreamer )

Well, you can definitely get used to it. At least that's the impression I've got from playing with the Habu - where lift-off distance is about 15 mm. Sitll, you're much better of with a lift-system like the Explorer 3.0 has, where the mouse stops tracking after approx 3 mm.

No DeathAdder for me with shitty lift-off-system.

well, we don't know for sure yet. End-customers report the lift-off distance to be as much as the Copperhead ones, Sujoy says about 3 to 4 mm.

Although i received my DA just 3 days after sujoy, it already had the newest firmware 1.04 installed, its possible thats causing the problems

About the tracking distance... people had the same complaints with the CopperHead. But I tried it myself and it stopped tracking at 5mm or less on my Razer Mantis mouse pad.
Can some more people provide feedback on this matter?

Also, can some other owners of the DeathAdder, besides Ukjsatiy, say how the mouse performs in Quake 4 at low sens with different DPI settings?
My DiamondBack has negative acceleration when I move the mouse real fast (which is my normal style), even when I only turn 90° (5cm). 400 or 1600 DPI, 125 or 1000 Hz; no combination of different settings seem to fix the problem...

DeathAdder vs Habu:

1. Is the wheel identical to Habu? When you scroll, is it as quiet as Habu's wheel?

2. Is the left click on DA softer and quiter than on Habu? The Habu clicks were kinda noisier and hard to press, imo.

Hi Sujoy, and thank you very much for your mouse reviews. I was lost in uncertainty about which mouse to get, and your reviews are making it much easier. I was not sure whether I should get the Habu, due to issues it had on its release. When you revealed more Habu limitations, that ended it. I won't spend money carelessly on a Habu.

Now I'm looking at the Logitech G3. But I have a question which is
important to me, an RTS gamer.

I saw your DeathAdder review and nearly jumped out of my chair when you said you could make scroll up and scroll down bound to keys. I HAVE BEEN LOOKING ALL OVER THE WEB for reviews which tell whether or not scroll up and scroll down can be programmed for mouses!

I play Warcraft 3 and I need a mouse which has scroll up functioning as the TAB key and scroll down being SHIFT+TAB. This will make killing opponents and rescuing my own units much easier. Can the Logitech G3 do this? Can any other mouses other than the DeathAdder have programmable scroll ups and downs?

Buy a mouse with cable, as far as i know G3 had no cable.
So it will perform not very good I strongly guess.

As RTS gamer you may like a smaller mice, for example razer diamonback. Razer software allows alot things with "mouse button binding".

Sujoy said that it weighs the same as the Microsoft/Razer Habu mouse, and that it's a little heavier than a Microsoft Wheel Mouse Optical and a little lighter than a Logitech MX500.

Now all you gotta do is find out if the Habu and the Intellimouse 3.0 weigh the same or weigh differently.

I have a question.

I've always played CS with 400 dpi and 2.2 ingame sens. I would like to use the Deathadder now, hopefully without the drivers, but 1800 dpi is too much for me, I can't get the 450 dpi without the drivers (profiles are not stored in the mouse... why did they change that?), and I can't make my ingame sens 0.48 to compensate.

I've read many times that you shouldn't touch the default windows mouse sensitivity (6th notch). I've been experimenting , and leaving it in the 3rd notch makes the DA at 1800 feel almost like a 400 dpi mouse.

My question is, why is it not recommended to move the windows mouse sensitivity? It seems to work fine for me, and I don't feel any kind of pos. or neg. acceleration.

setting windows sens to 6th notch = mousespeed 10 in registry

10 means the data input gets multiplied by 1, 5 becomes 0,5 and 20 becomes 2. If you have for example an input of 3 pixels up, normal sens results in 3 pixels movement, lower 1,5 (hehe) and higher at 6 pixels movement. The problem with the higher sens is that if you move the mouse 1 pixel it will move 1*2 = 2 pixels, so lose pixelperfect precision.

Sujoy, numerous people are having major problems with their Deathadders, depending on windows sensitivity you can have positive or negative acceleration. Its ridiculous that razer would release yet ANOTHER mouse full of bugs. The razerblueprints.net site is full of people who have nothing but problems so far. I really dont understand how you got a mouse with no problems. Could you use your contacts with razer to find out what is going on? They even pulled the firmware version 1.4 from their support site. And ive used both firmwares, the problems persist regardless. I have two of the mice myself already, both with the same issues, I've tried on different computers as well. Ive been playing CS since 1.3, so I'm well aware of mouse acceleration problems.

This mouse is a buggy piece of total garbage. The lift off is insane, it has positive acceleration, middle button makes me randomly spin in ut2k4 and the RIGHT CLICK DOESNT EVEN WORK.

NICE REVIEW ON THIS TURD OF A MOUSE. I bought mine off Tiger Direct because of this review. I'll know better next time.

It has become apparent that not a single Deathadder is functioning properly for the end-user. Obviously not a scientific survey, but of all the members on razerblueprints.net, not one functions without a substantial amount of negative/postive acceleration. I myself have two of them, and they are both terribly flawed in the same manner. Now, with Sujoy's review of the mouse showing a completely linear graph of motion, only two possibilites exist. Either Sujoy got a 'ringer' or he altered/fabricated his results. Now I for one dont think Sujoy would do something like this, but I would like to know why he has the only known properly functioning Deathadder. I am really getting sick to death of Razer's incompetence when it comes to releasing a working product to the market. I really like the shape of this mouse and will stick with it if a satisfactory fix is generated quickly. But after this and numerous other issues with every razer product I have purchased, I am done buying their garbage.

I have both the silver and black icemat and the deathadder (from tiger direct) tracks without skipping.

I do however i have the lift off problem, which seems to be worse on the black icemat (but not significantly)

There is also the positive accel issue.

This was done without any drivers and on the 1.3 firmware (stock).

I'm almost certain u don't have the same sensor we all have, Sujoy.

I sent razer an e-mail about the mouse.

It might be a little long - basically, I tried to be nice and said the mouse has lift off probs and accleration probs, will there be a firmware update, or can u recommend another mouse in ur production line.

Here's what I sent:

I recently purchased your DeathAdder gaming mouse and I'm very pleased about a lot of the features on this product.

However, I’m encountering issues with certain aspects of its tracking capability.

First of all, the distance at which the mouse sensor can read the surface it’s on is exceptionally high – it causes the mouse to keep tracking the surface underneath it even though it has been lifted, significantly, off the surface.

With such a high tracking distance, attempting to casually reposition the mouse (by lifting) on another area of a surface will turn out to be counterintuitive because the user will have to lift up the mouse perfectly vertical, past the sensor’s lift-off distance and then position the mouse, again, perfectly vertical, for the sensor to keep the cursor at the same position on the screen.

Secondly, the sensor seems to have built in tracking acceleration, since, when acceleration is turned off in the mouse drivers, windows OS, and in games, the mouse sensor still tends to accelerate the tracking.

I am very familiar with the popularity and excellence of your products that’s why I wanted to find out if these issues could be addressed via firmware update to the mouse. If not, could you recommend another mouse from your current production line that does not have these issues.

As of right now the mouse is sold out almost everywhere. The Razerzone website says they are working with the factory to get second shipments of the mice out. Maybe the problems were just isolated to that first shipment of the product.

The liftoff problem is bewildering, as their website clearly shows a liftoff of 2.3mm on a white surface. Obviously it's going to be greater on a black mousepad, but 10mm is plain old false advertising. And 2.3 is not even impressive for white paper anyways. My MX500 stops tracking after about one 1.0mm on paper. If it stop tracking at about 2.8mm on my Steelpad 5L which is a green and blue mousepad not even black, I could expect something around 6.4mm with a Death adder assuming lift off height gets proportionally worse on darker surfaces.

The mouse accelleration problem is astounding. I don't even know how a mouse could actually be accellerating it's inputs in hardware. Without any drivers installed and without any accelleration coming from the game or operating system. The worse problem is for me is, I have the money to buy one, I know both these problems could be fixed either in the next production run or a new firmware update. So my question is, has anyone besides Sujoy and other reviewers gotten this mouse and have it work as advertised, aka an excellent gaming mouse?

To my knowledge nobody has a properly functioning deathadder. Go to razerblueprints.net and peruse the DA board. You will notice that everyone who has posted in there has these same issues and razer has not come forward with any sort of response or timeframe for a remedy to these problems.

About "missing clicks" you can read in some reviews. It occurs in Q3 for example but you can easily fix this by setting USB rate to 500 Hz (which is default btw).You wont see diffrence between 1 and 2 ms anyway.

Now just fix this little acceleration and we will have (almost) perfect mouse.

I even went back from a mx-510 to mx-500 due to the lift-off distance. (well, i switched the sensor because the mx.510 case is lighter and feels better)

This is absolutely not acceptable and bogus. You make a mouse, there has to be some testing done on the product, honestly it seems like they never test any of their mice.

That is what it sounds like, they haven't tested nothing. How can you have a mouse in its default state without drives, have accel?

I think why the death adder is for low sens gamers is the optical technology it uses can track much faster than lasers without skipping. Low sens gamers tend to move their mouse very fast and very far, this optical technology allows them to do that in theory.

The firmware is still on Razerblueprints in the download section.
It didn't solve the issue for me, however a helpfull forum member mentioned, that replugging the mouse fixes it untill next reboot, and voila! it does. :)

Another thing i noted was that if u turn the sensitivity down (i had to turn it down to the 3rd notch so as to cope with the 1800dpi) and swing the mouse back and forth repeatedly on a large surface, you can get the tracking to malfunction (stop for like a second in the same position); but it'll keep moving.

This problem I don't get on either the mx510 or exp 3.0

The only reason I want to switch from the older mice is because of the squishy mouse lag issue.

Did you changed sensitivity in windows or in driver?
Keep windows at default 5/10 and use driver only.
Also changing USB to 500Hz may help.

Alright the mouse is terrible, after a few days of trying to adjust to it i can never put the crosshair on someone like i can with a Microsoft mouse. It always seems off, but the lift was the only thing good for it.

Sujoy its me the dude with the long criticism on page 9 last time. Liked this article allot. I've been doing more mouse research of my own since last time and I think usb sample is a must now and razer easy buttons because you may have one misfire in a match but you will have many other dead on shots due to the elimination of target lead. Im serious my machine is so tweaked now I can often hit targets without any shot lead in most games as long as I have a 40 ping or below which I enjoy. I didn't tell you last time but I am the god of tweaks and I know it so I might as well just say it. I own karoush ghazi and almost anyone one else I've played or read on a forum in raw speed and latency so I figured I'll toot my own horn as long as I'm with close friends or anonymous: ). See the differences between logitech mice and razer mice while obvious is durability vs grace, but I think with gamers on our level you have to say screw durability. You may ask why. I say screw durability cause thats for noobs. I have studied jeet kune do Bruce's way of fighting and I find it applies to every kind of fight even war not just hand to hand combat. Bruce said that at first you should learn form, then learn speed, then learn power, and finally the most liberating part. The lessening of intensity and the increase in awareness as you cut out all the excess exertion and motion including all errors. The economy of grace. So if you been banging away on your logitech for a few years i suggest you give that thing a rest and try this death adder. Concentrate on not pressing those soft touch buttons until its in your muscle memory then forget about it. I find the ergonomics of the razers superior also and the grips between the thumb and ring finger is just amazing.
P.S. Last time I didn't know this was your site( you could prolly tell). So I would like to say congratulations on a job well done and also good job on taking over the virgin megastore. I wonder how you make your money tho because I don't see many adds except for tournaments. Tho of course net money is so monopoly that I always say Internet money is not real money but you can really spend it, ahahahahahahhahahahahahah, I have seen some amazing google adsense checks (half millions for 3 months worth). Who would think boldfaced hyperlinks of regular words could be worth so much................................. Keep up the good traffic dood.

Oh yeah also Suj just one small comment that I forgot about I think highest dpi is always the best and you should turn down you sensitivity as low as you need to. I don't care if you have to get picky to 2 decimel places(if games even take it that far). I am a wrist aimer tho and I have seriously been considering arm aim because of cpma. You wanna know something funny tho. The best aim i ever had was with the rail on q2 at ole crappy 125hz with a ball mouse at a sensitivity of 25(of course I only played one game back then too). I just cant seem to duplicate those performances anymore even tho these days I do tend to score much higher : ). But yeah I'm a wrist aimer so I'd say the best mouse I've touched as far as that is the copperhead as I don't move the mouse much at all(less than a couple inches at most). What I used to be really good at in q2 and what I can't seem to stop as far as an addiction is blind rail shots at close to medium far ranges. Man those are fun. Nothing like having some fool juke to the side of you switch to rockets and then just all the sudden jerk look to the left and plink headshot. You Is Dead Mofo. Ok I'm done I'm tired and I need to go to bed cause I'm getting old. Doesn't it suck you have to sleep more after 25............

You haven't thought of that players have gotten a whole lot better over time and even though you may have grown in a game, so has a whole community. That might be your reason for not "hitting all as well as before".

I had the same experience, when i think back of my old qw games i thought they were pretty good and i aimed a lot better back then. So i dugg up some demos and started watching them and realised i wasn't moving better, aiming better or anything, it was merely a trick my memory had pulled on me, i could see from those old demos that now a days i move a whoel lot better and aim a whole lot better in the games i play.

Be aware that there are currently issues with the following things

- Permanent positive acceleration (Razer is currently looking into it)
- High lift off distance (has been solved with a BETA firmware on razersupport.com)
- Scrollwheel click is not assignable to "middle button"
- Right mouse buttons causes some users scrollwheel to physically get "stuck/be resistant to movement" while being pressed.

I find the mouseshape great. The liftoff has, as you mentioned, been fixed, and the acc. issue should be fixed within the week. I reported the "mousewheel rubs while right button pressed" issue, and it doesn't seem so bad anymore. :)
Edit: However the mouse feet are very low, and on some mousepads benefit from adding skates.

Firmware 1.10 seems to fix accel, not sure about lift off - seems worse on my grey cloth mat than the 1.04 it came with (never bothered with 1.05), but same (3-4 mm) on wood desk and less than 2 mm on white paper. Had to play around quite a bit (move ports, reboot and re-install the driver) before it'd update - kept getting the cancel installation as same as existing version error.

They didn't change anything related to the sensor or technology in it. It was basically the cheapest profit grabbing refresh I've ever seen.

Add an extra thumb button that it should have had from the beginning and make it a different color so small children that play css are more likely to say, please mama can I get it?

It still skips, it still sucks, no point retesting mice which stand no chance to be competitive.

The infrared sensor doesn't work with F-Series pads and low sensitivity. The cursor stops when you move it real fast. It's like the cursor hits an invisible wall and it bounces back. Happens with a black icemat v2 as well.

It also happened using a diamondback the blue one. Which also uses infrared instead of the red led. Which is why I think its the type of led being used.

I feel tricked by the test results and would like to say that the deathadder absolutly sucks! on the qck+ i will nu try to play with an S&S
it sucks cause when i move fast the cursor shoots down and also a LOT of negative accel unlike my diamondback
but i hope that another mousepad will fix this will post it later

note that i did update firmware as told in the bugguide

im having problems with the mouse not being recognized at all. I got two mice thinking one was defective but no its an issue with their newest firmware 1.21. I upgraded and voila after changing the polling rates and dpi it totally stopped workin. The thing doesn't glow anymore and the scroll wheel light is always on.

It still does. I have the DeathAdder with firmware 1.21 and it has significantly worse tracking at higher speeds the lower a DPI you set.

Sujoys original advice is use the mouse at 1800dpi if you want the top notch performance and just lower your sensitivity by a half or a quarter in-game still stands.

It is a bit of an annoyance 1800dpi on the desktop but you adapt. I'm a low sens user and you can trust my judgment =)

This is my third deathadder it was my second RMA. Because I told them I was pissed they just sent me a new DeathAdder without asking me to ship them the broken one first. That is fine by me. I'm using it but only because there is nothing better as far as shape AND performance is concerned. Atleast for my sensitivity preferences.

I only have one major complaint about it.

The thumb buttons are too low. It was trying to go for the IE 3.0 thing, but failed because unless you have small hands, there's no way you're gonna fit your thumb below the buttons to hold it. you wind up kinda holding it by the buttons, which of course doesn't work very well.

Not to mention the fact that I have shotgun bound to front thumb button, and lightning gun on rear thumb button, so in the middle of a fight when I'm needing to bounce them away with RL I pull out LG and get killed. I hate that.

tracks nicely though.

Razer was not aware of this at the release of their copperhead mouse. I spoke with a guy from razer who was in Denmark. He said that this was not a problem. I showed him that if you moved a mouse to fast it would move in a unintended direction, he said it must be dirt on the sensor, but then we tried with a completely new mouse. And I also told him that it is a bit annoying when the sensor detects the mousepad to early when you lift the mouse. They werent aware of these issues at all it appeared.
I just ordered the DeathAdder I just can't wait :)

I can independently confirm that the Razer Deathadder DOES in fact work very well with the Ulti-Mat (unarguably the best mousing surface on the planet) despite Razer's claim that the IR sensor would not track on aluminium. Please note, however, that the Ulti-mat requires 800dpi or higher for proper tracking, so it is preferable that you use 900dpi with a low sensitivity if you want 450dpi like motion otherwise you will experience some weird acceleration when moving it fast. At 900dpi or 1800dpi the mouse literally glides (tap it and it will slide) and tracks incredibly well with no negative or positive acceleration. I used Ulti-Mat's add n' slides and that made this so smooth it's not even funny, on top of the fact that my lift-off distance is now tiny (but not so tiny it's uncontrollable). On the Icemat I am not yet sure, Razer said it would not work on the glass surface.

One question:

I just switched from Microsoft Blue Optical to DeathAdder --> what are the settings (in XP and Q3) to have the same sensitivity as before?

With the mouse before I didn't have to worry about driver sens or control panel sens or whatever. I had sensitivity 6 in Q3 and everything was the same, always. Now that I have this mouse the sens in Q3 is WAY different of course and it seems the sensitivity in driver changes the sens in Q3?

AFAIK Microsoft Optical Blue uses the same sensor as IE3 so is there a way to calculate what my driver and control panel sens have to be so that sens in Q3 will be the same as with the mouse before?

I currently use a G5 rev2 mouse for gaming but i don't really like it's shape. It's a little bit too big for my hands and so not very comfortable. So i'm asking if anyone compared both these mouses's shapes can please tell me if the deathadder is smaller than the G5?
