To clarify: Quake is not forbidden in Germany. It is about (completely overdone) protection of minors.

The main restrictions:
You may not give it to minors.
You may not display or advertise it if minors could see it. Consequently a dealer can not put the game on the shelves.
But you can ask the dealer for a copy or buy it online.
You may not import it (not even adults).

this instution consisted mainly out of conservative, regular officelike women in their 50s. which were actually to stupid to play simple games and basicly didn't know how to play a game (controls, comprehension, etc.). so they got some teenager (like 14years old) to play the game infront of them. while playing they asked him what is going through his mind, etc. and built up their decision. ... lol.

based on the daft frequency of indexing into the 2000s, they kept this methods and it's just obvious that they just struggled for the existance of this part of their institution (games)

afaik the english counterstrike version is still indexed, in the german version they sit down after they got shot by some monstrous, bloody headshot. etc...

The department responsible for judging that does not take action on their own to recheck the 'banned' media. After 10 years the publisher can make an application to recheck the media. This time the current publisher and holder of the rights, Zenimax, has decided that it's time.

two motivations for "unbanning" classic doom and quake. id publisher bethesda can sell an id pack on german steam. bethesda said its better for the id software image, doom was "unbanned" about when rage arrived, so it was some kind of publicity in germany.

You can make your community a better place. As you stated in a nested comment #70 before, there are everywhere good and bad things, but for many people Germany is still very attractive, despite all the things which are often criticized bad on a pub talk level.

If you are rich enough, then you are free to go anywhere else to spent your money in a better way and perhaps when the government is not that good regulated, then you as a rich person have way more advantages because you can enjoy way more 'freedom' that way, and because you are rich, you can visit your family anywhere on the world anytime. With a German citizenship you are allowed a big freedom for travels around the world.

But if you aren't rich, you are most likely to stay here, and just mock about the situation. If you go the path of emigrating, coming back to your family is not always that easy . If you lose your German citizenship you can't fly into every country, not for a holiday, not for a business matter, not for a family visit - security and financial examination is more strict.

You will find all over the world unmotivated people, people stuck in their same routines and thinking. But also often enough you will encounter people who evolved an out-of-the-box thinking, and maybe motivate and remind you also that it's not always bad to be, where you at.

Anyway - The struggle to find the best of all possible worlds is as old as the world exists. I hope you ain't too passive. Good luck in finding and creating it - but never forget your roots.

This shows exactly what is wrong with german politics these days. The government fails to stop the social margins from increasing, fails to support individualism and is controled by economy; it fails to do it's job.
Politicians are unable to see the real roots of the issues this society has. There is no innovation, no interest in what's actually going on. Everyone is looking for excuses and work arounds but the real problems never get tackled. Video games as a cause for violence are a perfect example of an excuse when the real issues are social exclusion and the lack of perspective for the future.

germany is a very big games market so the publishers cut their games to pass the gouvernment censorship. the gouverment say they want to the protect the youth but its shit for the grown people too, buying and selling "violent" games is hard in germany. every clever person import such games from other country (uk is cheap). you cant understand the whole thing. its something that has grown and now nobody can stop it. you can laugh about germany, but wait a while this overprotecting and censorship style will spread to all cultures, and to your country too. its about laws and rules and politicans like that. you will see (i hope not).
