STREAM B HAS NO HIGH QUALITY OPTION EVEN WITH THE PREMIUM???

THIS IS THE REASON WE WILL NEVER GET GTV BECAUSE ESL WILL JUST CHARGE PEOPLE FOR STUPID MONEY FOR AN ACTUAL STREAM THAT IS OF DECENT QUALITY....

they should check out the eve-tv streams because they really did own. Boring as shit tho but they looked amazing

They should do passes for events. Then id actually consider it. Except i almost did buy one but lucky i found out B doesn't have high quality...

it does, you're probably referring to when carmac said on stream he was sorry they couldn't offer premium stream for the QL matches but he probably just meant he was sorry quake wasn't in stream A which has more prettier effects.

stream b quality is visibly worse than the usual premium quality. if i had known that premium would be in such quality i would never have bought it.

but i don't whine, since i can see that there are objective reasons for quake being shown on stream b. i just hope they will have good quality for at least the semis and the grand final. otherwise, this event would remain a complete failure in my eyes.

My point was that it's kinda weird that dahang places 3'rd when he has more map wins than fox. That fox won against him shouldn't theoretically place him above dahang.

It's not at all odd. For group games, you have to come up with a scheme which, for each pair of players, is able to decide which one ranks higher in the end. That is which puts players A ... F in a strict order A>B>...>F.

Now, game win's alone obviously don't cut it yet. Question is which criterion or criteria you'd apply at the next level.

As to direct comparison, this already resolves the issue in a group stage where all players are required to play each other and where the game itself knows no tie/draw. Whereas map wins might not resolve it quite yet, because two players could have the same number of game and map wins.

So you could have sorting schemes like
* game wins, direct comparison
* game wins, map wins, direct comparison

Now, for each of those you could make an argument about which of them makes more sense. Regarding the latter, you could say for example that game wins over a group already have an averaging effect, so you want an average applied at the next decision level too. Like map wins.

But then, you could say that the competition is not about winning maps but winning games. So there you'd take the game wins and then the direct comparison. A scheme which unambiguously resolves all ranking issues already while only involving game wins.

From my pov it's rather a matter of taste which one you pick (also because I'm too lazy to think through possible pros and cons). But you certainly can't say that the former is less intuitive than the latter. Deciding by game wins and game wins alone whenever possible is very intuitive.

maybe, but the maps thing is not a very indicator, either, because a 3rd map does not always get played.

If a player wins 2/3 of his map against another one, their match should normally end up being counted a win and 2-1 maps. But if he manages to win the first one, we never find out if he would have love a third map.
Of course, this is weakened a bit by players picking maps but it still is a factor.

I was a bit bummed about rapha losing to cooller in an extremly close match, it will be interesting to see the following matches, rapha, dahang, fox, av3k.

But if it's one player that I really think deserves a win it's fox.
But if he manages to win against av3k, I still can't see him winning over cooller. I think out of the two(fox and av3k), av3k has a better chance taking the win over cooller.
I just don't see fox making it to the finals :/

Must say I'm rather dissapointed with 2GD's commentary so far. He seems to fool around and joke during games mostly, while he should be professional and give a professional commentary during the games. He gets payed for doing his job for a reason and people pay for the stream to have quality on video and shoutcasting.

Saying things like he having more skills than fatal1ty proves rather that his knowledge is more in his name than in the game.

I don't mind if he does the jokes before or after the games but please focus on the game while casting :/

And yes I can understand its tiresome having to shoutcast for long periods, but let's not use that as an excuse since alot of people have to speak nonstop like this for their 'real' job all the time.

I don't understand why they would show WoW on the video stream either. I played the game and from watching it on stream you can barely make out what is happening. It is far from spectator friendly and switching from a good QL game to WoW is just silly.

Hoping today and tomorrow will be better to make up for the bad coverage this event so far had.

No disrespect to 2gd, but I actually thought he was damn funny this time around. I never thought he to be funny before, these last days it looked to me he was suffering from lack of sleep or might be on drugs.
But I think he did a really good performance and a bit of that 'whatever' attitude which I think spiced up this tournament a lot considering what happened on wednesday.

2gd: single ray of light in this tournament, he is the only commentator who gives more information than I can gather by watching the game. in combination with esl.joe it becomes pure awesomeness somehow. and you gotta love those 'impersonations': mh is up and he is going to....no.... "i gotta need those 5 shards. they are way more important" ...yes...

compared to other casters he watches the respawn timers and can tell what the opponent is up to.

also he and slasher (in a negative manner, personally he's ok though :)))))), make me favor british english to american english. it was quite the contrary b4 watching/listening to those two...

that little touch of cockyness? fine with me, he played cooller in warmup and wasn't 2bad i guess. normally i don't like it either, but it just fits somehow and it usually happens only once per week or so:))))))))

yesterday i enjoyed carmacs commentary way more so than 2gds..

carmac actually did his homework and was able to offer alot of background information and random trivia about every player.

and also he gave the casting a very professional appearance.

when 2gd came on and started being witty again... well.. i'm not going to hate on 2gd, because i do think he's the right person for the job.
but he isn't motivated enough, and thinks people are satisfied when he sits down and doesn't stop talking...

However take this news with a grain of salt. I have seen blueprints of what they have in mind and let me assure you this DRM shit is the least of your worries.
In the not too distant future, the entire concept of owning a console will be gone according to their view *( Guillemot brothers from Ubisoft )*
Services similiar to Onlive is what they are pushing for during meetings and all the equipement we are buying leads me to believe it's kinda true....

yeah i dont know how reliable moore's new movie is but there was a part about the ripping off of airline pilots going on in america, basicly what it said was that most pilots have to work 2nd jobs to live :) this one woman they interviewed was actually a waitress as a second job, and it paid more than the flying :)

low HP survival happens to pretty much everybody in almost every game.

also, he's seriously getting better with every tournament. he fixed everything he was doing wrong against av3k in the EU championships. he can get this far again.

even rapha himself said that all their games are so close.

I have to admit after cypher was up 2 maps to zero, I honestly thought he'd end up in the bronze final. But it was like he took that t9 game to a whole new level, just destroying cypher who was probably by many considered the best t9 player in the world.

Cooller QL results: 4-8 @ Dubai, 3-rd @ Dreamhack, 3-rd @ Euro championship, 2-nd @ World championship. And and Dreamhack and Euro championship av3k had pretty convincing wins over him while at world championship he defeated av3k closely and also was very close with rapha at finals (and defeated rapha in groups).
If you don't see a trend here, you are the most stupid idiot in the world.

So close games...
On t7 a few more lg hits in last minute could've changed everything.
On t9 that fucking telefrag...
On dm13 double OT and resolution in final 20 seconds.
Only in last minutes of dm6 rapha was able to dominate a little.
Anyway, rapha deserved the win, but

Rapha just seemed to be in better positions all the time, like above MH on T9, above RA on dm6, firing rockets down.. dkt predicted he would do this and he did.

Cooller made mistakes and his RL was way off, it could of been nerves i guess. wp tho dude, you gave us great games.

It's obviously been the nerves. I was hoping for him coming back a little more relaxed after his smoking break. But the opposite seemed to be the case. Like he let himself repeatedly getting hammered at ra, pretty much atypical.

That said, rapha definitely earned and deserved this. He came across very convincing and I'm quite happy for him, being the likable guy that he is.

Also, if cooller continues playing I certainly see him taking a first place at some point. So far, he's done an amazing job in reinventing parts of his gameplay and adapting to ql, thus still being able to surprise people who believed to know him inside out. Fairly awe inspiring actually. What he still seems to be lacking though is the confidence, in those crucial situations. But he appears to be on track to finally win a major tournament, and once he does we'll sure see him run up to full potential.

Now throw a comeback of toxjc into the mix and there'll definitely be exciting times ahead of us. Especially if esl manages to not fuck up their events.

Cooller had some fuckin' epic plasma gun plays, but he just wasn't consistent with rail and rockets (even though he did have some great hits)

Just unlucky again, but Rapha still played great.

And I honestly don't see what the massive problem with +back is. For the whole map it's a little bit tiresome, but the last minute or so, whatever. In the last minute or so, it was exciting to see Cooller rushing to try and get those kills and coming so close. Edge of the seat stuff

rapha always seems to have cyphers number. I gotta admit that I was sure rapha wasnt going to
win the semi's after losing two maps. but credit to rapha and his strong mentality on coming back
against cypher whom everyone was saying would take it all. Rapha said it himself that he gets stronger
and stronger as the tourney progresses. There is no doubt taht Rapha is #1 atm. Dahang isnt close to
him also. Rapha takes his game to another level. rapha: "I came here to win". One couldn't have gone through a harder road to win it all: had a really strong group and lost only to cooller in a close match(beat Av3k easily) , beats DaHang in close games except ztn which was rape, beats cypher 3:2, and beats Cooller ftw. he beat everyone in the top 5! He is indeed the best.

i think its that hes staying away from all those shitty mind games, he is very good mannered, never said anything to offend any of his opponents etc and because of this hes staying calm and not doing any mistakes cos he doesnt have to think of anything beside the game

coolller and avek they just cant chill out even for a minute cos they re thinking about the pressure, they re thinking about shaking their hands, they re thinking about how they hate each other or how much better they re than their opponents or how gangsta they re or what kinda bullshit they said in an interview

Because dm13 deservedly went to cooller and dm6/t9 to rapha, t7 was so close that i wouldnt really say any of the two deserved it. so in the end for me it feels kinde like a 2,5-1,5 - ztn would have either shown how close the two really are :/

what is interesting is that when cypher was dominationg in 2008, everyone was so impressed with his fast paced aim heavy style.

along came rapha, slowing it down, playing smart and it certainly paid off.

and also, people who whine about rapha won because of +back should watch rapha's pov against cypher on t9.

That was pure annihilation, and total map lockdown for 10.
It was like he was playing a n00b.

And also dm6, coollers best map(I dunno anymore, but each time cooller lost his so-called best map it suddenly isn't his best map anymore e.i. (ztn,dm13,t9)) where he played that map so well it was nothing short of awesomeness. and carmac was blown away too... which wasn't surprising.

Cypher played by far the sexiest Quake.. again. Give the kid a bonus medal or something. 4th place is just sad. Additionally his semi vs Rapha were the best matches of this tourney. It looked like the highest level of Quake Live, but looks can be deceiving seeing how he lost against Rapha and Av3k.

rapha is good and all but to be honest the only thing that kept cypher from dominating the scene just as he did in 2008 is the fact that he's handicapped by razer to use a shit mouse and not wmo...

in 2008 his aim was a huge advantage against basically any player and now he's kinda average aim wise but a much smarter and less aim-based player, it's just scary to think of 2010 cypher with 2008 aim.

but only ignorant fools would ignore the fact that his aim is much weaker then 2008. he still hits but in 2008 he practically didn't missed. his lg today is also not very impressive, especially in lg fights. same goes for rail on some occasions. It's a fact that his aim with wmo was much better and 2010 cypher with monster aim = best player in the world no doubt.

I was seriously disappointed with the final games, i thought cooller looked terrible in those games. Missing rocket jumps, falling off of ledges. Mistiming items by 8 odd seconds etc. Not to mention daft rocket jumps against someone with an lg.

Rapha won and was in the final so its a deserved win, but from those games i would rather have seen someone else facing rapha in the final as cooller was ass.

Incredible tourney it was! The level of play was unbelievable.

Grats to Rapha he was the best today. I think he is by far the strongest player mentally and with skills beeing this close it does makes the difference.

Also who thought Cooller will be this good again placing higher in every lan he attends? 2nd place is a great result and he has nothing to be ashamed of. After this tourney his legend status is even more stong.

That's exactly same thing - It's a poor argument way too commonly used and you know it. It's like when people criticize films and people answer with "Well, go make our own, then."

You've always answered my criticism not with substantial arguments but rather you've tried to analyze why and how I make my arguments, very careful not to touch on the actual matter at hand for whatever reason.

I don't call them unprofessional every chance I got, I've quite reasonably called them out on:

-How they handled av3k-cooller in the IEM European championship and I argued why e.g. a comparable professional sports tournament would never (and have never) handled it the same way for good reasons (I gave like 10 reasons in the other thread). Rondrium answered community criticism basically with "I'd do it again".
-How they came to the conclusion to invite dkt to the world finals when there were several more deserving and ready candidates. When reasonably asked to elaborate they all said "it wasn't my decision" (and they still haven't explained their reasoning despite heavy criticism)
-I criticized xou for his position on limiting streams for the ESL tdm tournament, which he answered with irony and satire and his usual "holier-than-thou attitude".
-I've commented along with many others on how their premium stream is run by a p2p protocol thus making costumers pay double without telling people they're using their bandwith. They didn't bother explaining that to anyone.
-I with others commented on how wrong it is to have a rule against rotating players in an online tournament when someone said that's the reason for the 4K-LLL catastrophe. Wasn't answered.
-I commented on how their schedule for the world finals was unsuitable for everyone that either worked normal hours or had school.

None of these things were handled in a professional way except the last point which is quite understandable considering the venue.

On the other hand I've complimented them on numerous occasions e.g I defended how they managed to turn around a disastrous first day with very good following days and how the tournament eventually was a great success. I've also complimented their streams(despite it being p2p) and their excellent commentating cast numerous times. (I have an ESL-TV subscription and frequently recommend it to people.) I've argued that there's no reason they should make the free-stream a better quality one. Et cetera - all in all ESL is positive for quake and I do recognize that. However they don't respond to criticism well (or at all), their PR is horrible and some of their staff are rather clueless and pretentious.

As to your continual blathering on the rules, I said [if] there is a rule that forbids banter and chat it would be a dumb one and there's no contradiction in asserting that. I'm sorry for not indulging your mockery where you linked me to a 41-page rulebook pdf. Furthermore I criticized an action-reaction - not a specific rule, which means whether an actual rule classes with this issue is irrelevant since my criticism would then just shift to the rule and still be valid from my point of view.

I believe having to be alert plays every bit of role to being fast paced as other elements do. If you aren't quick to think as well as react in QL then you're toast. Whereas other game's are much more forgiving. I've played cpm and wsw and while I can't see how those are faster (well maybe cpm) or even enough to warrant calling ql not fast paced. I think it's more a matter of how you are forming your opinion. What's your reference point and why does that make the game fast-paced.

I don't think cpm isn't too much faster. QW is definitely faster especially because of the projectile speed and damage per hits but you're talking about the fastest fps out there so that isn't really a valid comparison and doesn't mean QL isn't a fast game by any means. There's a reason why QW and CPM will not hold a candle to Q3/QL in terms of popularity and competition.

A simple rocket to the face stops players like cypher and av3k. This isn't racing, there is not points earned for playing fast, only smart.

If you could juggle a football a gazillion times, it doesn't win you the match.

People tend to forget about the main objective; frags !

When you are up against a fast paced and heavy aim player like cypher you have 2 options.

Either play faster and aim better...

Or you could pull up a wall when he comes chasing at gazillion miles and hour.

He got the shit spawn on every single map if I'm not mistaken. He had momentum on T9 right (I have to watch the demo)? He was going for the kill anyway before the telefrag.

I thought Cooller had this tournament, until Rapha turned it around on Cypher. I gave Rapha NO CHANCE vs Cypher on DM6. None. Zero.

Rapha's adaptive play is absolutely fantastic.

Great event with the best games in ql played so far.

games I enjoyed the most:

- Av3k vs fox : great play by Av3k, almost no mistakes and insane aim

- Cooller vs Rapha groupstage: Clever play by both all the time and all 3 maps were realy intense.

- Cooller vs Av3k: Shame Av3k didn't have his form that he had like vs fox, but cooller just was the better player here. Great games.

- Cypher vs Rapha: Amazing shots by both, amazing aim by both, incredible smart play by Rapha, which made him come back 2-2 in maps and win in the end. The shotgun blast on dm13 that knocked Rapha of upper rl area into lava was just epic.

- Cooller vs Rapha: By far the most intellectual ql duel match I have ever seen. So many great plays by both players. A truely worthy final which Rapha imo won in the end due Cooller doing some realy weird mistakes that I didn't expect from him. Though you can say maybe Rapha forced Cooller into making these mistakes.

Props to Rapha, a deserved winner and props to Cypher for showing such amazing rl skills which is just awesome to watch.

Also big thumbs up to 2gd, joe & carmac for doing some great casting. Made the spectating and following this event twice as good as it already was.

missed the finals, but from what I've seen in the first 2 matches: cooller overestimated himself in terms of prediction, t7 is not ztn. he should have stop using those gay grenades all the time when he eas in control -this is not the way you put yourself undisputed in the lead. it was also funny in the beginning to see rapha making cooller unconfortable at mega, while keeping his way back to RA safe. on t9 same thing, cooller shold have used more rocket and less plasma, on this map rapha's PG prediction was better
Overall, the fact that cooller trains many hours/day is visible, which also is kinda funny, because in the end it transforms him into one of those who he said he hate them: the arcade boys. at this tournament cooller had better movement, faster reactions and stronger aim (as long as he did not get overthinked), and lacked one of the most important factor: correct weapon choice.
One more thing: sometimes bo3 and bo5 feels kinda weird, giving the impression that there are too maps played the same. something is missing: qztourney4

That's why they need to put maps like qztourney4 and qztourney6 back in. There are maps with no armor, 1 or 2 YA, YA/YAs and RA , MH and YA(s), MH spawning every 2 minutes, Jenna inside with Jamerio around, and so on. These times, the only maps that are played are those which are stucked with everything, because uh oh, strategy and because many items forcing people to keep the timing on...
The variation should be good because it compensates a more diverse kind of players (and thus kind of play), not only mathematician players. Some players are great aimers, some are good mathematicians, and some just have different style (like ZeRo4 with his t4 skills). It's not like the mathematicians won't be compensated anymore, the best players are still those players we all know.
This variation should balance things a bit more, imo.

They need hub. I also am biased towards T4, being a long time fan of it, and that map has such polar fans/haters of it. People who hate T4 think it is just some aim fest of RG bots. T4, like hub, and to an extent t9, require dynamic strategy, where you're playing the opponent more than you are playing the map (if that makes sense). If anything I think t4 makes for more exciting matches to spectate (unless you ever watched if-22 on pt4), and at the very least, going along with what you posted, it offers a DIFFERENT type of map strategy.

So screw all ya'll T4 haters. I don't know how DM6 stays in rotation over T4... but dm6 is a whole other conversation. Since I don' see T4 coming back, at least ID can do is add hub :(

T4 was played at Qcon 2008 and that's when Cypher beat Zer04. This alone should've told many how the overlord of a map can be beaten with some young blood thrown into the grinder. I wonder why it did not make to the map pool of most of the recent QL tourneys.

Awesome Tourney. I missed the final so didn't check this site anymore. Watched the vod of the final this morning.
Great final, but too many mistakes by Cooller.

This is also why rapha wins. He's the guy that just doesn't fuck up. Extremely impressive.
The top 4 can all beat eachother, but rapha is just damn impressive and pretty much flawless which results with him ending up at 1.

+back is obvious. Specially when so much is at stake. Maybe it's a bit boring sometimes, but it's also extremely nervewracking and tactical. QW is supposed to be the fastest game, but when it really matters in duel +back is also rewarding in qw.
I don't think this can be changed.

I do think QL needs a more fast paced map instead of dm13/ztn. I really love spectating these maps, but they are also very +back friendly and 2 of those maps is maybe a bit too much. I'm not hoping for t4 because I think it's a flawed map... oh well.

my suggestions for next iem:

-dont rename demos. this fucked up my demoplayer
-put ingame sound slightly louder. Its hard hear a hitsound sometimes

all in all a good tourney

I just saw that dm13, wow, must be one of the most intense games I've ever seen. And once again the iceman does it again; letting the opponent have control minute after minute, awaiting patiently his chance, like a cheetah, and then BAM, he strikes! Fortunately some insane rockets by cooller prevented him from winning this map too...
rapha has gained even more respect for me after this tournament.

I'm still wondering whether all the people were there for the CS finals, QL finals or maybe even both. A German CS team in the finals would have explained the crowd, but even without one the place was packed.
