Those lights were always annoying never did manage to make them go away even with LEGAL picmip settings 4 instead of 15.

um there is no such thing as illegal picmips.

At tourneys the max setting is 5, anyone who plays beyond 5 is only cheating themselves and others should they ever play in a tourney or with a decent group of gamers online.

i play with 16 and i know quite a few clans who play with picmip 16 in clanbase... exactly in WHICH tourneys is 16 "illegal"? cant both players just have it? and whats the visibility advantage anyway? id say a visibility advantage is more having /cg_enemymodel tankjr/pm and /cg_enemycolors iiii <--- those increase visibility much more than picmip 16.

The difference is the Tankjr/pm (green) is a legal setting that is used in RESPECTED tourneys and it's something that every decent player/clan agreesis acceptable.
No disrespect to Clanbase, but it's hardly considered the pinnacle of tournaments becaues it's online, therefore lots of people like yourself use those sorts of settings, which are a bridge too far IMO.
If it was not, then why do the respected tourneys/players limit (or used to when q3 was big) this setting?

It's taking the piss, it's bad enough that designers and artists spend months makign a map with areas in mind and spending months texturing them well, then players make the game look ugly as hell, then on top of that totally strip the map of textures so the game turns into an even biggeraim fest becasue those players can't hack geting owned with acceptable levels of visibility.
Whatever it's horses for courses, but if you take any satisfaction from winning from a team WHO IS NOT using the same picmips/visibility advantage as you are then you're just tricking yourself into believing you won.
And if you can't see that then you're probably an average player.
My point being good players don't use that degree of tweaking.

i dont play in servers where the level of competence is so high that its a rule to use picmip 16... and i frankly cant give the slightest rats ass about picmip i could change it np ti 0 and my skills and aim wouldnt really be affected. i can say this coz i actually play rail instagib with picmip 0 and it honestly doesnt make any difference. i can take getting owned, but i dont think that having picmip 16 is an indication that im a cheater or a sore loser. i could really change it and nothing would matter - what really matters is the enemymodel.
and btw teams/clans in servers i play on dont ask each other at the beggining of the game "hey whats ur picmip?" how lame. ok so clan base might not be the pinnacle of ladders but im just giving u an example of q3 on a competitive level where gfx settings arent controlled.
btw i had a friend who plays vietcong (where visibility is VERY important) watch me play q3 and he said that having green enemymodels is a greater and dirtier visibility advantage than picmip 16.

Well all of the major tourneys like CPL/ESCW and Quakecon from what I remember limit the players to a picmip setting of 5.
Don't quote me on that (though I know someone will) but I am confiedent it is 5.
That fact that you play instagib probably says what level you are at and it's not at the level where I would expect you to see what is immoral about using picmip >5.
Don't mean that to be rude, just saying the well known players who enter the big tourneys would not play with those settings.

And I agree that the Tankjr thing is a bigger advantage, but like I said, it's accepted and is all ready a big advantage to a game which has already been stripped down to it's bare essentials.

No limits for picmip at ESWC. The last cpl tourney was in 2002 so fuck 'em. So the only tourney over the last 3 years to limit picmip is qcon(they do rule supreme in idiotic rules). By the way could you get any more arrogant? Clanbase is still the highest level of competition for tdm and ctf in europe and way way better players than you play there. Just because you have some lame doom3 pro-gaming dream it doesn't make you a pro-gamer. Besides picmip 16 sucks and only newbies would consider it a cheat. And it's not that hard to disable it. Only picmip 3 is allowed for Enemy Territory for example.

It's still a lame setting and I was referring to duels.

Oh come on. The best players are the ones that spend the most time on the game. If they spend the most time on it, and most people spend 1% of the time tweaking their game/mouse/sensitivity/mousemat, ie. gaming setup, then why wouldn't the best players also open up their Q3 cfg?

I'm pretty sure you'll find that most good players have a very specific setup that they need to play good with. For example, fox has to have the sound channels reversed (ie. he plays with his headphones the wrong way around) because he got used to it. Thus, the chance of a good player ever beating a player purely because of picmip settings is very, very low to say the least.

As for the effort artists and level designers put into the game - if they actually cared that people must _always_ see the artwork, even after having played the map 1000 times, then they'd remove the fucking picmip command, wouldn't they?

Using foxs earphones thing is a bad example.
He gains NO ADVANTAGE from the reversal of the audio.
In fact he might be at a slight disadvantage if you measured his reaction times at a base/scientific level becasue it's not natural, the difference is tiny, but somewhere in Fox's head he has to go agaist that natural instinct.

Like I said I was talking on a high level of play.
I think if there was a game of CZM vs Cooller and CZM was allowed picmip 15 and cooler could only go as high as 5, it would be fucking world war 3, because at a fairly high level of play picmips can play a big advantage as can any other setting your opponent won't use.
I agree that it's not a huge difference, but an advantage is an advantage and that's end of story.

So for people who play casually on the net it's probably not that big of a deal, but if you're someone like myself who's only interested in the watching the best players and wanting to get that level (under fair play) then using those picmips is an advantage whichever way you look at it.
If it is not then ask any good player if he would mind his opponent being allowed to using Picmip 15 vs his 5 and see what he says.
And if this happened in a tournament and it was not allowed, I guarantee you the thread with people calling X a cheat would be huge and last for weeks as would the memories.

It was a setting that EXCALIBUR enabled that shrunk his hit box.
Using picmip 15 is not as bad as doing that, but it's still something that can make a difference.

Who do you count as a good player? Because we have Sujoy, link, fox, Z4muZ and a couple of others who are regularily spotted on the site, and I'm pretty sure none of them use picmip 16 merely because it looks butt-ugly and doesn't help you play the game at all.

For example, I know most players play with mid-low settings in all games because it's one thing to get max FPS and totally another to play with monochrome textures - you just don't gain very much after a certain point.

Also, I have it on good authority that players such as Dragon (he beat Rocketboy a few times) (WILL BE) competing at Quakecon, so save me you ill informed answers. And there are players who played at CPL 04 who are now considerably tougher than gopher+dragon from 04and still play.
Plus it's all relative anyway, because you're only as good as your competition.

The day CPL announced PK I went out bought it, sold it 3 days later. I simply hated it and am not interested and neither are half the other puppets playing the game.

I'm well aware that the best players are playing PK, but that is not my problem, if players want to openly slag off a game they are playing 24/7 in the hope of winning money.
The cpl tour will leave a few players like vo0 Gellehsak, Stermy with very big smiles on their faces.
But you'll also see really good players fail to win anything other than a few 100 dollars even though they invested a whole year of playing it and some probably dropping out of school to chase the carot being dangled.

Why wouldn't dragon play at QuakeCon? Free trip to Dallas plus free cash 'cuz everyone still pretty much sucks at the game. But trust me, he'll still play in the World Tour on PK, but the QuakeCon tourney is just a nice bonus to that.

I played quake III for quite some time on and off, and a lot of otehr FPS shooters since, and if any game is going to be THE GAME in 2005/2006 it will be this or something spawned from it.

No, it's shit. Look, it has a good graphics engine, I'll give you that. But the movement is horrible, the weapons are annoyingly powerless and unbalanced (rocket + chaingun anyone?) and the whole thing packs about as much punch as a tweeny birthday party.

dragon is in dignitas, who are sponsored by ABIT, who will have a large stand at QuakeCon and thus want to be represented well. Rocketboy is also sponsored by ABIT. They both get free flights and accomodation.

RL v CG proves your level of understanding and ability at the game.

Plasma Gun can be REALISTICALLY used to regain control of someone who is spamming rockets.

Rockets are easy to dodge, thus you can use the Chain Gun or Machine for long mid distance attacks.

The Shotgun can do 200/200 so if you're clever with you position you can quite easily BANG! and you're back in the game.

The movement in Doom3 does NEED speeding up, and if the designers paid a little more attention with things like door speeds and a few of the BG hits it would be a lot better.
Also, the movement in Ut is not great IMO.
I have faith they will because ID did not even do the Multiplayer.
I'm pretty sure the guy who did the pro maps for Quake III arena (Christian or something) is the guy who is behind the expansion pack.
I hear he has a big interest in the pro gaming community and I have no doubt he knows what shit is needed to get d3 into shape.

The point is considering id bolted that thing on at the last minute and now the expansion pack is coming along with Quake IV, I still believe that this is going to be one hell of a game and definitely worth investing in and if the NEW UT is good on it's won merits then I will play that.
Time will tell, but I have to disagree with Doom 3 sucky movement. It's fine when you get used to it, it just needs a litte tweaking.

im not using "whatever setting i can to make a frag." the only reason why i use picmip 16 is so the 125fps i play with dont fluctuate, because when they do fluctuate = lag on my not so good connection (64kbps upload adsl). but on a LAN or competent tourney i would switch to picmip 0 - 5 without any argument because THE VISIBILITY ADVANTAGE OF INCREASED PICMIP IS SO NEGLIGIBLE that it wouldnt affect my aim/skill anyway.
i would be playing with legal picmips if i had any access at all to what u consider those "competent tournaments." im sorry but in the czech national cyber games tournament i believe that there is no controlling of legal picmips. consequently, my level of q3 competency cannot reach the level u must be talking about, mainly because of where i live.
the best players stick to legal picmips. ok. im not rebuking legal picmips (even tho that might seem the case in my previous posts) and i would switch to a lower picmip without any argument if i was to get to the level of competency where that is the case. but the thing is that players im surrounded by and play with dont control each others picmips. and i truly believe that picmip is not such a great advantage as u stress it to be, eg "the higher the picmip, the greater the advantage." the picmip advantage is minimal. thats my point and thats why i stick to picmip 16 - but if i had to change to a lower picmip, i would do so without question, coz i believe the difference in picmip to be a NEGLIGIBLE ADVANTAGE.

yep. i used to play that light but then i realized that it's crap to not be able to se throu those lights so now i run a quite "normal-dark" cfg :>

with half-transparent textures like light beams (look at the same t2 scene in fulldetail) picmip acts kind of like a "blur" filter, it works the same way on all textures but there it's the most obvious. change your picmip settings in steps of 3-4 and you'll see what i mean, at 16 it just adjusts the whole textured face to a medium value and paints it that way. choose a lower picmip value and it should get better.

It's a part of the map so you cant remove it. Like the ones on pt4.

I think the reason why picmip 5 as limit was once invented were e.g. muzzleflash or the blood gfx drawn on your screen when you took damage, and this could be made transparent with high picmip settings. Now with competition mods such as OSP you can turn off these gfx anyway, so there's no point in that rule anymore. The only tournament that still sticks to that (stupid?) rule is Quakecon, and as Quakecon has tons of stupid rules regarding competitive gameplay this doesn't really count as an example. With Punkbuster you can block any values you don't like, but there's no point in blocking high picmip values as it has both advantages and disadvantages and doesn't really help with anything. Things that really give advantages are scripts like the forward rocketjump script (ninja) and some netsettings some people still can't afford due to worse connections.
