one team's signup is $20, to break even they would have to place 7th out of 64 teams. to make money they would have to top6 in 2on2 in europe :)
that kind of eliminates the chances for most people and surely doesn't help quad gaming in the long run.

Well the idea is not that far out, but there is one problem. People are used to everything being free in quake.

It's not that people are used to everything being free. For people, Quake is a way to compete and have fun, not a way to put in money to get a chance to win more money. Quad Gaming is trying to make "FPS poker" from Quake, which is an idea that's alien to existing community, so very few people will get in.
Buy-in tournament for Quake is like transporting bricks on a Ferrari. Sure, you can do it, but people get Ferrari for completely different purposes, and for transporting bricks they get a completely different car.

I really hope this works. I've always felt that a pay2play league scheme would work well... but no one seems to care to poney up the $10...

it only works if the community is quite large. theres like less than 10 people who play tdm actively in na? why would i pay to play games where i already know the results of most matches in advance? ql tdm doesnt need pay to play at this stage. it just needs more smaller events and pickups and stuff just to get the scene going again and hopefully get to a stage where you can actually have competitive events.

well higgs told me about some 4v's that he did a few nights a go, and if that sort of thing could pick up i'd play tons again.

No the community needs to grow by encouraging noob tournaments for noobs such as myself. If every tournament is some intel sponsored shit with the same old guys, people will lose interest as there is nothing to engage casual gamers.

Trust me there could be some teams but the release date on this info was pretty bad and the availability of the payment option at the time. Plus there wasn't any follow up updates when the set date was getting closer, I only saw the post one time and as far as I can remember it happened during the IEM NA event and of course people were going to forget about it. It just needs to be done again with more notice ahead of time and it'll be fine.

well maybe its just me then. i just dont see the point of pay to play in tdm at this stage. i mean i could sort of understand it in the duel scene which is reasonably active with lots of players at different skill levels most of whom are competitive. but as i mentioned the tdm scene is stagnant. it isnt active enough where u have people moving up and down the skill ladder. and a pay to play tourney isnt imo a good way to coax the scene out of its lethargy.

the other thing i really hate is when organizations pop up and straight away go o pay us some $s and we will host tournaments and stuff for you. do some free tournies, even without prizes, establish some credibility and maybe get some small sponsors etc. I would actually pay for a membership in an organization thats done that and has a record of providing good service. but asking 10$ a month for one (imaginary) tournament is just meh.

but again maybe thats just me. gl with it anyway.

What (imaginary) tournament are you talking about? We hosted 2 free ctf tournaments and gave out $2k on those, then even on our 2 follow up pay tournaments we also paid out another $2k within 3 days of it finishing.

ps: you might want to post the sign up list. i think more people might sign up if they see the tourney is active and actually going to take place rather than dying out for lack of signups.

what happens if the tournament doesnt have enough signups and its cancelled, do the teams get their money back? my guess is not

How about first let people sign up, and when the final participants list is done, collect money at check-in phase?
But anyway, people usually cba to pay anything, no matter what it gives in return. Especially if someone already pays for example for QL pro account and then maybe also for ESL-TV premium, you can't expect that he will decide to pay even more for something else Quake-related. You can maybe expect this to work when you are already a popular, established and prestigious league, but right now people just don't care enough for you.

As of right now you can sign up with out having to pay, so it is exactly as you described it. However to be able to play you will have to be an active member.

Ugh, the lack of tournaments for non pros, or leagues that let people move up will eventually kill QL. I'm tired of seeing the same 4-5 losers in the same tournament playing each other, its kinda zzz. How about somebody make something like the Cal league for QL that actually works and is active and administered properly?

yeah i agree, need something to encourage lower level players to step up from playing pub ctf/ca into more serious stuff, but im not really sure what. its not like low lvl divisions in ctf/tdm are filled with clans :/

1-day tournaments and ladders on the official site would help a lot i feel, ladders with 1 month season and then reset, get some kind of shitty award for participation and results. both announced and ex-tempore automated tournaments with 1 hour signup perioid, then start, play & restart, get shitty medal for playing :D something like that, i dont know.

actually now that i think about it, arranged teams ladder like wc3/sc2 b.net had for example would be fucking awesome :D

Yep, easy and simple (from players pov) sc2-like ladder is all that is needed and no more. I don't need money to play competitively.

People could see themselves progressing, starting from their first match online, and then they have that competitive extra hook to keep training.

What other payment options are you guys needing, as of right now you can pay by paypal which is bank account / cc / debit card / echeck, and if you don't have paypal, you can do debit and credit card. Is there some other form of payment that we are missing.
