I've only seen a few of those and would certainly agree about The Wrestler. I'd question putting Religulous in worth seeing, it's not amusing and doesn't land any interesting or powerful blows. Mahler's just taking the piss in a slightly smug and childish way, even though I agree completely with him as an aggressive atheist. It doesn't compare to Jesus Camp. The Dark Knight should be in the top films list and I'd only rate Burn after Reading as worth seeing. Speed Racer's gotten a really harsh rap, it's visually very interesting, maybe before its time.

Agree with your comments on Speed Racer, I thought it was a great movie and probably too much for the standard movie goer to take in at one time. But I think history will look kindly on Speed Racer. Pretty sure it'll get at least some cultish status in the years to come.

But I disagree on Dark Knight which I thought, besides a couple interesting scenes, was pretty dull. Ledger's performance was very memorable, but I think the rest of it was pretty forgettable. They hire a great actor like Christian Bale for the main role, yet he plays such monotone characters (Batman and Bruce Wayne) through out the film. Batman speaks in dull rasps throughout the movie in easy-to-predict dialogue... and the same can be said of Bruce Wayne, except in an egotistical, self-absorbed trying-to-cover-my-true-identity type of way.

yea it was just a bit of light entertainment and not as interesting as Dawkins' tv/youtube stuff, but still I found it a lot more fun than the super hero movies, and the James bonds etc.

Always thought Speed Racer looked like a terrible movie, like a poor man's Tron or something. Fancy CGI just doesn't appeal to me at all. I'll give it a go when I get some time maybe.

If you're a bit into anime, I think maybe you'll get a kick out of Speed Racer. Has that same campy style to it while still remaining intelligent in story and dialogue.

Also, the editing was top-notch. They use lots of interesting layering shots and flashbacks and transitions.

Curious Case of Benjamin Button was great, must see. Very epic, though, would recommend a good stretch before you head into the theater.

Appaloosa was amazing (if you're a western fan via Sergio Leone or Clint Eastwood). If not, I'd shy away from it.

Burn After Reading was one of the most pitch black comedies I've seen in a lonnnnng time.

Funny Games was interesting, but it was also highly entertaining and hilarious.

Tropic Thunder was absolutely superb. Not to mention was developed and written by my brother's friend (Justin Theroux) -- thus I am cool by association.

Speed Racer was great. I completely forgot to add this one to my list. I know a lot of people hated this movie and it was panned by critics. It's a shame because I think it was extremely well-crafted and campy in a fun-but-not-dumb way.

I thought Tropic Thunder was absolute garbage. My girlfriend and I went to see it on the advice of a mate and all I saw were three comics attempting to make war funny, oh yeah, and failing at it.

I fell asleep half way through and woke up at the end to see Tom Cruise dancing like a fat jewish cunt, figured it was the funniest thing the movie had to offer and walked out.

It wasn't trying to make war funny. It was making fun of "war movies". They pretty much make fun of every major blockbuster war movie ever. Including notables like Platoon and Saving Private Ryan.

Also, not just war movies, but Hollywood in general if you caught the intro trailers all making fun of Hollywood template movies. Action movie with muscular lead actor (Scoorcher), Booty Juice (token black guy/rap), Devil's Alley (cliche forbidden love/controversial love story starring mega-actors), etc.

If you couldn't catch all the references in the movie, then probably the movie wasn't for you to begin with...

Jack Black is a genious: he invented playing old rock and metal songs on acoustic guitar while making facial impressions. I believe nobody in the history of mankind has ever attempted this.

Like that Dane Cook-character, he invented that while performing on a stage you can tell about everyday situations while energeticly jumping up and down.

Appaloosa is almost garbage. Consider the battle from the end, for example. The only message the movie succeed in is women are all whores (sarcasm)

Renee Zellweger's character was a commentary on the typical western female characters who are all weak and honorable and stand by their men all the way to death. Renee's character was actually quite strong (if you consider her weapon her sexuality), she played all the men in the movie except Viggo and Ed Harris (if you consider that he knew he got played but still forced her to be his woman). I think Appaloosa was mostly a movie for western fans... lots of dry humor, straight-talking, and realistic gun play (unlike blockbusters like the newest 3:10 To Yuma and Tombstone).

If u wanna call realistic the fighting in the end, in which both are wounded then "oh noh, my God! it's a miracle!", then be my guest (I call it artificial tension). To be more specific, this is the part of the film which especially sux "this is the part where you fall down and bleed to death!". The film wanna have realistic fights combined with unrealistic situations (see for example the scene where they cross the river followed by indians, then they shoot each other and no bullet hit them from 1000 love messages, lol). Problem is, realistic fight system is broken and unrealistic scene has no magic in it, it's just trite. Why the hell all characters in the movie has to be stupid? Virgil Cole's friend refuse a blowjob, Cole himself don't realise the two good shooters and brothers in town is trouble and that showing he is in love with a whore in such time would put everybody in danger, and then there are the indians, trying a frontal attack at the river. And once again Cole's friend chose to shoot the bad man in town, in mid-day, when he could do that at night, dressed with the Batman robe, and he would not have trouble with the law. But they are men of honour, their job is their best evidence, prrrrr, give me a break.

I haven't watch myself many westerns, still I can't forget Unforgiven, Hombre, Rio Bravo and the mature westerns I have met this year, one very strong with the realistic part, The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford and the other John Wayne's wonderfully unique western feeling in The Searchers (this one I know is old but well, I just downloaded it now).
So considering its upper class target, Appaloosa has better competitors on the genre nowadays. The hell, I was watching the movie a few days ago and I almost forget it. I'll give it a 6 from 10, just for the sake of Ed Harris, though he might be the cause of the failure, because his short producer/writer experience regarding movies?*
Good things in the movie: image and extrashooting part.
Bad things: artificial plot, the screenplay, the duels and the "modern free and strong" woman -it is common sense there were such womens in the past, but the chances the fictional Cole met one are zero, so I suspect the female character was put there to attrack more viewers (especially women who must have a little bit of identity aphorisms, but can't deny Britney Spears fans, too) and to transform Ed Harris in a macho. Such cheap techniques won't make me cry in the romantic bath, though.

I think the part you're referring to was that part that Viggo and Ed Harris snuck up behind the indians. And the reason why they didn't got shot, afaik, was no one shot AT them. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Appaloosa is a movie for those with a taste for westerns. Like I said, dry-humor, straight-talkin' dialogue, and realistic gunplay (UNLIKE the remake of 3:10 To Yuma and Tombstone -- where there are 10,000 bullets exchanged and only bad guys die or get hit).

See: Once Upon A Time In The West (realistic gun play), any of Clint Eastwood + Sergio Leone movies, and Sancho's Land (for the dialogue) for what I'm talking about.

Watched it last night, have to say I didn't like it at all. Jeremy Irons, Viggo Mortensen and TImothy Spall were all horribly miscast, and Ed Harris's character had no personality.

Really old fashioned like an old Ford/Hawkes western, but with none of the charm or class, it just felt cheap. The story was pretty ridiculous too. Assassination of Jesse James is much better film imo.

I'm a huge Eastwood/Leone fan too.

Loved the setting and the overall grittiness, but overall It felt like a bit of a mess and lacked style.

I think Garrone is a pretty weak director, hes got a lot of attention for this film based on the fact its loosely derived from non-fiction and the fact the writer went into hiding was a great marketing gimmick for the movie.

I think Il Divo is a far better Italian gangster film in every respect (its one of the best mafia films of all time imo)

I agree it's far from perfect but, lack of style? It depicts a series of dramatic and non-dramatic events in a documentary kind of style not blowing anything out of proportions but just showing things as they are. The effect made it feel real in the same way City of God felt real.
And it did feel like a mess but I think that was sort of the point. Italy is a gigantic mess... Actually I don't know how it is down there but who cares.

I'll definitely watch Il Divo one of these days. Just watched the Benjamin Button movie and is quite astounded atm. Quite nice that was.

The book was sort of an incoherent pile of crap, but still quite an interesting read somehow (some chapters). He also pulls out completely unverifiable stats with out mentioning the source all the time.

i watched quite a few comedies this past year, namely the seth rogan ones. 'pineapple express' and 'Zack and Miri Make a Porno' and 'step brothers' which i thought were all pretty good.
'tropic thunder' i didnt like at all however.

yeah it's not much but you can see it on a half decent quality and size screen. i got a iiyama 22" and it is quite blurry compared to my old crt but i can still distinguish 720p and 1080p. maybe got something to do with my good visual acuity and stuff, but then i am highly convinced most young people's vision should be similar. anyway, im going for 1080p all the time now, no matter if it has 8 or 16g, it's worth it to me

I even like hdtv because sometimes I can stare at some detailed wall, the table or other shit in the movie, not paying too much attention what do the actors do

still hdtv is great for the type of movies which count much on the esthetics of the image, like Dark Knight, Matrix, I Robot, Equilibrium, The Fountain, etc.

Well of course it's better if there's no alternative costs, but I just don't find it that good of a trade-off by the rule of the thumb considering the limited bandwith and harddisk space. I also have a habit of watching movies in a window and multitask while watching.

Besides, Blu-rays are as overpriced as it gets. I'll probably be last on the train to buy a blu-ray player. I'm always looking for special deals, discounts and second hand stuff on everything. when dealers and people are upgrading to blu-ray I can probably hoover regular dvds from bargain bins next to nothing.

I do kinda the same talking about hardware stuff but about hdtv thing is very simple, I'm not a superhungry movies watcher, so if I start to dl some hd movie now and it will be ready in about 3-4 days, it works for me. Harddisk space is a problem, of course, that's why I dl hdtv strong visual movies and which I know I wanna see them again, only.

Yeah I've got something like 600gb of hdrips. Watching stuff like Band of Brothers in HD is such a massive difference. A friend of mine keeps ranting about not seeing the difference but then again he always forgets to wear his glasses.

My old TV-computer couldn't handle 1080p it was an old AMD 64 3500+, like 3 years old;(. It could barely handle 720p. Should be able to handle way more you'd think.

its all about the codecs with those damn formats. My computer is much worse then those specs and I couldn't run it at all, but then I did some research and came up with this:

first you get the Combined Community Codec Pack (cccp yeah :D)

would recommend removing any other previous codec, these are much better thanks to anime zealots( which have to get the best performance apparently).

You disable the h.264/AVC codec in the programs settings and then you get the CoreAVC codec. a codec that REALLY helps with h.264 and those P codecs.

You'll have to get it from mininova or something because the makers of the codecs charge money for it, or you could buy it I guess.

Out of interest I have both DVD version and 720p blu-ray of The Fountain, and to me the difference isn't that sizeable on my 19" 16:10 monitor.

If you would make (unmagnified) stills out of both and had to guess I would probably guess right. The most visible difference is the distinguishable features of actors such as eyelashes and wrinkles in close-ups, but the environment doesn't feel to me that much different.

I think you misunderstand the film the movies were shot on back in the day. Double Indemnity was shot in Academy ratio and has a resolution of 2160 × 2970. Of course the transfer to digital has to be done properly. House of Flying Daggers was one of the first Blu-ray movies released and Sony did a crap job of the image transfer. Most movies are still shot on film(I think) and not with HD digital cameras. Even old TV shows that were shot on film can be done in HD. In fact Seinfeld has started reruns in HD.

Yeah most movies are still film but I believe they are increasingly moving to digital.

your first two points are absolutely true. rambo for example looks a little better in HD. if you look at a state of the art film with amazing visual quality like transformers (shit movie) though, there are worlds of difference between dvd and hd
and i believe you that you dont notice that much of a difference on a 19". i got a 22" and with some material i dont notice *that* much of a difference either

Whoa, go for it! This movie brings new standards in the industry.
It has inspired already movies like Batman: Dark Knight The Incredible Hulk, and Appaloosa (how do these movies cope this stuff, good or bad, is a different issue)

I've heard that it's supposed to be great. Got any other good tips? I don't watch a lot of movies so I have no idea what's worth watching and what not.

Question: if I will put some offtopic movies (not made/seen in 2008, yet pretty recent), I will be offtopic twice, which puts me right ontopic?
-There Will Be Blood: put its base on the construction of the main character and has a great story
-Michael Clayton: the great monologues and dialogs compensate the lack of logics in some important screenplay plots resulting in a suspicious ending
-The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford
-Taxidermia (2006): a kinda controversate movie, don't watch youtube sequences, I did and I misunderstood the movie at first, u have to see the story to get to it

Also Atonement, the first half an hour is way out of the league of the rest of the movie -you'd almost say there were two different producers involved with different parts of it. More precisely, first 30 minutes is wonderful (till the war is starting), then there is just BS.

On the horror-fantasy part, I Am Legend (2007), Silent Hill (2006), The Mist (dec. 2007) and Beowulf (2007) deserves a little bit of attention.

Beowulf was pretty dull if you ask me. Overhyped at least. It was well watchable but I expected more from it. I liked I am Legend much, my type of movie.
Cloverfield was very good also :D

Introspection. Realised with mature yet pretty short stories (may lack some detail logics but must have interesting dialogs) dark feeling and subtle (unnoticed most of the time) soundtrack (you can't hear your fear when there is noise around, and you can't find out what you really feel about love and other stuff if there is motivational music to "help" you feel the way producers want you to feel).

The lack of soundtrack most part of the movie: russians use this a lot, as a great example I can give u *Tarkovsky' Stalker. Hollywood movies pretty much abuse with soundtracks, trying to lift its quality just by that. I call it an unfair method, I don't buy it anyway and I feel a bit offenced every time I see such movies, like producers wanna insult me, by inducing me artificial feelings. Take for example corny romances, which makes u almost cry, then when you go out of the cinema you find asking yourself why the fuck did you get that emotional at that piece of crap?
I know that soundtrack has his role, but excepting musicals, if you wanna see how good or bad a movie is, remove the soundtrack from it. Time for american producers to finally evolve, I guess.


The silence, if used wisely, has an important role to the realism of the movie, especially when it has to transcede psychic tension. In contrast with the usual burn-public-ears-with-manipulative-music method, this old rediscovered method (to the americans) creates an acumulative pressing tension, by I'd call it the symphony of the silence.
And about the dark feeling: betwen comedy and drama, drama wins most of the time. There would be much more to say, but I don't have much time right now.

As a side note, these elements were not invented by this movie (hy ignicock and mash, the logicals retards, bow to the tube!), but we have the first good implementation of these elements put together, after a long time of absence in the american movies industry. I mean, look at it, if even blockbuster movies, which don't wanna get that much of the art in, embrace these methods.

Both tried to rely more on psychological aspect than the characters, excepting the parts meant to put the viewer even more in a world of terror.
Batman: usually this kind of movie relies on the hero, trying to make him look as pure and shiny as possible, and repeatedly transmitting to the public that he is the only choice of salvation and the best image of real justice in the world, concentrating most of the philosophical dilema on him. The new vision is different, which explains the complainings some people put on about the Batman character in the movie. The fact that the Joker was catching more the attention is not just a coincidence, and John Wayne was deliberately put in a secondary role, regarding his inner feellings. It is true that movie still gives Bruce Wayne some conscience questions and "what's the secret to remain by the light side of the force" questions, but it doesn't sound that convincing, especially because it doesn't stay too much on the matter. As for Incredible Hulk, it tried to look more believable and thus mature than the first part. It don't [ed] insist on the dark side of too many characters, as the job is easy. It doesn't have to go far away for the mind of some horrifying creature, because we find the whole formula on the same person. Hulk, even if he don't kill his girlfriend, you feel her life is in danger when close to him, and once he is in killingspree, he is not very nice with people. It uses less psichological stuff than the Batman for example, yet the direction of "why so serious? because it is possible making 'em more serious" is a rhetorical question.

So is hulk entertaining to watch? I've seen batman...,

I thought Vicky was a proper return to form for Woody, you could be harsh and say it was just a re-run of Manhatten, this time with Barca as the setting, but the girls were all gorgeous and played their parts perfectly and Bardem was great, unrecognisable from his last role in No Country. It did feel a bit pretentious like all Woody films and at times it felt like an advert for Barca, but was so much fun despite all that

JCVD was excellent, loved the premise and more importantly the execution. Its the first film I've seen in years to actually try something new. I can see Hollywood doing something similar with an aging Swarzenegger or someone now but it will lose all the subtle touches that made this film so good

Vicky Cristina: Yes, that was definately a good one, but for some reason it had a slightly bitter aftertaste for me. Might be the superficial or stereotype characters (some dialogues between the main characters really irritated me) or the predictable storyline, I dno. But I still love Allen's style, its more interesting than 90% of the american tripe that comes out.

JCVD: I agree that it is highly original, and it's a without a doubt one of Van Damme's best performances. It's some time since I saw it, but I seem to remember the movie really slowed down in the 2nd part, as well as some shaky camerawork. I liked the ending tho, totally unexpected.

Haven't seen that, but I think the silver medal goes to Max Payne. Did the director even play the game? Has the director even seen a fucking movie in his life?

There's absolutely no film noir elements which was the whole dictating style of the game series, an hour goes by without any action, and even the action sucked. I don't understand how was he can anybody make such a bad film out of those elements, even if they tried.

Silver to The Happening, even Zooey Deschanel couldn't save that creationist-funded piece of shit.

I think Deal with burt reynolds should be mentioned aswell, but it's one of those movies that are so bad that they're good
