Some of you may have noticed that I'm making a q3 video, and some of you may know that I'm practically done with it, however. Last night I tried to encode it to both .avi as well .mp4 using MeGUI, only to find the next morning that I've stumbled upon a nasty error that at the moment puts the release on hold. I am testing around with VDub as we speak, but I'm unsure of the quality, so trying to find a solution I've been thinking about giving matroska a go just for the heck of it. What do you think of the .MKV format?

** UPDATE **

It will be .mkv format, as this looks kickass so far, only question i have now is about the .avi version AND would you like to have a very high quality version, because I've managed to render an 852 MB xvid .mkv 720p that looks amazing, but is 92 MB/min. Anyone would download that?

.mkv is just a container but with many attributes superior to .avi, and there are people that don't use .mkv's and would just freak out not knowing what to do with it

That's what I thougth actually, but h.264 works for .avi, too :)

to me the biggest advantage of .mkv is that you can have multiple audio tracks.

x264 is a free codec for encoding h264
h264 is the standart

as you will know codec is short for coder-decoder, and as you said yourself x264 is a program for encoding and decoding.

h264 is a standard.

also you can not simply compare h264 and xvid as you do in your other post.
Since for example divx and xvid both use the same standard, MPEG-4 ASP, while the standard h264 (or MPEG-4 AVC) is used by x264 and others.

tl;dr:

encoders: xvid, divx, x264

do not equal

standards: h.264, MPEG-2, MPEG-4 ASP

Oh god, I think I have to write a email to sites like doom9.org cause they have it all wrong!!! They completely fucked up when they took x264 in their codec comparison

but have fun quoting wikipedia. They often fuck up when it comes to technical terms ;)

If you just want to encode without (much) filtering I can recommend staxrip.
It works for almost all containers and codecs (video and audio) and actually uses vdub for the encoding, just that it automatically does two passes, etc.

Very easy to use, too

none really, personally I prefer zoomplayer for vids but use vlc for streams.

I just don't like the approach to force people to install this program to view it, just like microsoft does...

instead you could just put a codec in the rar...

it finds and matches any sub files and they're easy to activate through the menus for when they're in a container

I really wanted to switch to VLC, but MPC's subtitles are just much clearer and better to read (Good font, shadow and stroke and high resolution letters at any res. video).

.mkv > .avi & .mp4
a much better container in all aspects, except it's not supported by evil corporations

.x264 > .xvid
better quality and/or smaller in size
might be a bit demanding on pc hardware at times

I would suggest both mkv/xvid and mkv/x264.

do not put h264 into an .avi container, it's wrong, annoying and plain lazy.

do encode h264 and mpeg 4 audio, and do put it in an .mp4 container. if it doesnt work in a .mp4 container, you're doing something wrong, but if you really cant fix it, then put the above into a .mkv, but you'll have to live with the fact that newbs wont have a clue what to do with it.

i've done a couple of tests with .mkv xvid now and so far it's looking pretty good, i'll run a few more tests, encode some .avi's to compare, so with all this testing around and encoding + uploading the movie will probably be ready for release somewhere mid next week.

No, I wouldn't.
Xvid is far inferior in terms of quality/file size compared to h264.
Use h264 for the hq version.

Above 30-40 MB/minute is deifnite overkill. Maybe use a codec that people can watch videos with instead of shit that takes 100% cpu in any player and still lags on 2,2 GHz cpu.
