they said it was well possible, as far as they knew, that there might be an extremely dangerous mutation happening.

to me it seemed that the most qualified people really thought there was a significant but small probability that shit would happen.

it still seems to me that people most qualified on such topics are petrified by the possibilities of these things or the synthetic analogues of these.

Strange how people think anything is possible, when really, most things are not possible. If any kind of bacteria would be ultra dangerous to such a large, distanced species, it would be alien bacteria. That would require though, the species traveling to an alien world. If the bacteria came here, it would be destroyed by the various natural forces domestic to this planet.

These theories can be fun, and I certainly don't have a problem with that. If you want to make special-effects heavy movies, with multiple close-airplane-escape scenes, fine. I do have a problem though, when people take nonsense seriously (see: Christians/Republicans).

You can see, by the 'swine flu' virus, why so many people think the Bible is non-fictional. i read up on gamma ray bursts a while ago. we live in a zone of the universe where it is relatively quiet. this is how life on earth has continued to evolve over billions of years, and will, yet again - well at least until in ~ 1 billion years the sun becomes to hot to make life on earth possible, which is a fact, but given the kind of technological advance we have seen in the 2 million years i have no reason to doubt that 1 billion years from now we've either destroyed ourselves or have the ability to populate other areas

yes, the earth has seen mass extinction events, but none of them was ever over a short period of time - none of them happened within even a few years or less, most of them happened over at least thousands of years, if not over hundreds of thousands of years
most of those had to do with climate changes, changes of the gases in the earth's atmosphere etc. or evolutionary changes - the best explanation for the extinction of the dinosaurs for example is that blood sucking insects that could carry disease developed over that timeframe, and that dinosaurs simply couldnt cope with that.. but that was over hundreds of thousands of years also

so no, the world isnt coming to an end in 2 years. just dont drive your car to fast, dont shoot too much H, live healthy, and you're pretty much guarantued a life that will last to its natural end.. if even that, since drugs that slow down ageing are already in the pipeline
