"Esports" is already so sterile and devoid of personality, the striving to become more like professional sport will only make it worse in that regard. That's not really a matter of their scene hurting the our scene. It's just a matter of the Quake scene not have been able to grow significant enough to stay on the IEM circuit, despite having had the prestigious spot on there to begin with.

If there were existing no DotA2, SC2, LoL and so on, Quake would be no better off. There would be no more people playing or watching the game than now. In stead they would probably be playing with pandas in WoW or Gears of War on their consoles. In fact I bet that more people get exposed to Quake because of the games you hate than otherwise would have.

But go ahead and be a naive and bitter Quake nostalgic.
