Onlive is set to pretty much kill consoles completely.

It's a nice idea but I'd quite like to be able to download the games at least (like steam).

With video services (like Hulu) really taking off and revolutionizing the way data is delivered, I think it's safe to assume that everyone is going to have to switch to this model in order to keep up.

I can only see consoles being around for at max one more generation, and I'm struggling to even see how that could be successful.

They'll turn them into PC based services based on steam/onlive I expect. Not sure where that would leave Nintendo though since they seem totally reliant on the console structure.

Nitendo are true players, they'll always carve out a niche for themselves.

The real battle is between microsoft/sony, which should eventually result in a unification of consoles becoming pcs.

They only existed because pc's were too expensive, look at a modern day console, its a pc without an OS and even then people are hacking them in.

Just sit back and wait for everyone to catch up.

Not sure myself, maybe it'll turn into like a "gaming apple" type thing.

Once the current generation of consoles have a properOS on there, it will be nothing more than a pc you can't really upgrade.

Its stupid for software devs to have to code for PS3/360/Wii/PC.

Sooner or later everyone will realise a single platform makes good sense. Its always about the software anyway.
All these different protocols, pc players cant play xbox players etc.

Just continuing an out of date trend, which pretty much sums up the game industry.

Oh, forgot to mention there I was talking about Nintendo.

They seem to be hoping that they can keep the console idea going.

Bandwidth and Latency do worry me though, I couldn't imagine having to play at anything more than 5ms!

They're claiming 1ms, but I'd have to see it to believe it. Even still, it would be fine even with a tiny bit of lag for general gaming, just not serious gaming.

edit: The bandwidth requirement is supposed to scale, as well. Since it's basically just a video feed, they scale it by giving you different resolutions.

Yeah, I don't see how they can be doing it at 1ms at all.

They claim that the 1ms latency is possible through some voodoo networking that they've been working on for 7 years. I'm sure that'll be completely proven false upon release.

And the wireless controller is measured in "micro seconds not milliseconds"

Technically, that's already what Onlive is. You need the little onlive box that plugs in to either your TV or a PC.

If they can get it out and into all the markets and stable quick enough they'll have a real nice market cornered for a while before Sony/Microsoft/Nintendo can compete.
