The best one that is modern is : Attack on titan. Hands down the best

Solid show, but:

- narrative/pacing problems
- too over the top at times (seriously, made me chuckle)
- barely any character growth (much plot but no story)
- freaking open ending due to ongoing manga (shows with no conclusion due to ongoing source material can f*** right off unless it is deliberate and/or appropriate; in this case it was a big "read the manga" cliffhanger)

-> definitely not the best modern anime

Talking about the last few years, there comes to mind:

- Ping Pong The Animation (it's not really a sports show, but an amazing, character-driven piece on coping with life and failure)
- Gin No Saji a.k.a. Silver Spoon (a wonderfully charming and down-to-earth series)
- Space Dandy (a glorious fusion of and reflection on highbrow and lowbrow elements in anime)
- Shigatsu Wa Kimi No Uso a.k.a. Your Lie in April (it's an overly emotional/dramatical series, but if that does not bother you: it's very well done)
- Uchouten Kazoku a.k.a. The Eccentric Family (thoughtful and beautiful; sadly there are some scenes/characters in there that/who somewhat undermine the mood)

Just a few examples from recent years that I consider as "better" than Shingeki no Kyojin a.k.a. Attack on Titan (which really mostly draws from high-octane direction and style). Though, of course, enjoyment has to do with personal preferences. If one is looking for something "epic" and straight-forward, then Attack on Titan may feel like the best thing ever and the aforementioned shows may seem boring. But the same "problem" exists for all media: Big hollywood movies make a ton of money and a lot of people really like them, but that does not mean they are "good" movies.

Cant believe nobody mentioned Hellsing yet in this thread. Afaik there are two different animes with slightly different stories. I recommend the original/older one. I think the ending varies.

If you like gore I highly recommend Berserk and Hellsing (and Claymore). Plot wise/Brain wise I'd go for Code Geass and Death Note. Yuyu Hakusho is the closest to a Shonen I guess but it gets good really fast.

There are colored versions and do you know that most of the time they ruin the original art/story during anime adaptation ? look at all those fillers in naruto recently :/

The only anime that made me check out manga was Elfen Lied.
The differences were quite big because the anime was cut at some point and they had to get shit done.
They were both good \o/

Most of the anime adaptations are not 100% like the manga, for expl they made One Piece look childish, luffy looks like a stupid dude while in the manga he is more serious, in naruto they made the Rasengan so useless, every 5 seconds " ahh rasengan " etc... it kind of sucks :/

I stopped watching anime since Naruto shippuden ( naruto vs orochimaru ) and the only exception was Bleach and Attack on titan, both adaptations are really good.

New Macross & Gundam Origins (ongoing OVA). Gundam Unicorn is also a nice OVA. Basically, after gundam SEED, only OVAs are worth watching.

Gundam Tekketsu no Orphans is also ok. The season starts out great, but mid-season is kinda meh. Overall, ok anime.

Speaking of Gundam, watch 00 and Zeta (if you can handle the older animation).

edit: not really sci-fi and this year, but Gungrave is always a good mention.

Late 80's early 90's style have always been the best for me.
