I don't quite understand the "relying too much on others" comment.

Players do already play for very little, mostly no money at all. Which, in the case of 125fps, itself is being given for the love of the game, and nothing else. Streamers like fazz do promote the game extensively for very little return. Huge amounts of money have just been spent to be able to attend quakecon, where only a handful of winners took home some gain. The only other party potentially making some profit being id software.

I'm not sure that he actually sees how much ppl are already doing to keep this game going.

He knows how much those 12 people are doing for the game. He's talking about the majority taking that for granted and waiting for someone else to get shit done.

And what shit would that be? Magically increase the player base by a million to make the game more attractive for sponsors?

People are already paying id, for the mere ability to play the game. And do support the pro/entertainment side with donations and whatnot. It's really not the communities fault that this is an age old game with a steep learning curve, trying to survive in a competitive market.

In fact, you could give this an entirely different twist if you wanted. Namely that quake live would likely haven fallen flat much sooner without that extremely loyal and committed player base. For how much id itself contributed to make it a success, please be reminded of

It is the community's fault that the community is constantly bitching instead of getting shit done.
We always knew id wasn't going to do anything. Not that we should want them to do anything, just look at how the current big communities are organized and picture the debacle the day they lose funding.

Get off your ass and run things yourself instead of waiting for someone else to do it.

What exactly should the community do? We play the game, a lot of us pay for subscription regularly, some donate to streamers, some donate for pros to attend qcon. Whats your point? Give me one example of what more can a community do?

No small weekly events in general for years until 125fps picked up the slack. Kudos to them. Before that, people had to rely on zotac and faceit, knowing full-well there'd be nothing left as soon as they pulled the plug.

In north america there was so little going on and nobody was doing anything. It was so bad I had to pull all-nighters, from France, to run their shit, only to get spit on in the end. I have no idea what the situation is currently.

Want a structure ? Build it yourself, don't wait for anyone else.

It's not like with q3, where the binaries and SDK were out there. With ql, they could shut down the stuff any day and make you look like a complete idiot, with your freshly devised "clanbase". Even more so as they're making it perfectly clear that this game doesn't have their full backing - see above link - and still more so since they sold shop.
