Weird FPS problem on new laptop-Optimus? (67 comments)

So I got my new laptop today:

Dell XPS 15 - 9530
Display: 15.6" QHD (3200x1800) Touchscreen
CPU: Intel i7-4702HQ 2.2-3.2Ghz
RAM: 16GB
Graphics: NVIDIA GT 750M + Intel HD 4600
Optical: None
SSD: Samsung SSD SM841 mSATA 512GB

and when I first tried QL I easily got constant 250fps on overkill & campgrounds. I then installed some apps, removed some junk software and played around a little with that laptop until I finally decided to connect my external screen via HDMI (no displayport cable at home :( no 144Hz for me right now). Turns out -> I can't even get 125fps constant anymore.

I fully disabled the Intel HD 4600 graphics and "r_lastvalidrenderer" shows the GT 750M. But for some reason I lag like hell. From time to time I managed to get constant 250 fps in window mode (same resolution as full screen mode). But also that is gone now.

My previous laptop could handle 250 fps easily as well:

MALIBAL Satori P170HM
Display: 17.3" FullHD 120Hz 3D Matte
CPU: Intel i7-2760QM 2.4-3.5Ghz
RAM: 8GB - upgraded myself to 16GB
Graphics: NVIDIA GTX 560 1.5GB
Optical: Blu-ray reader
SSD: Intel 510 SSD 120GB
HDD: Samsung SpinPoint MP4 7200 rpm 640GB
Cooling: IC Diamond CPU + GPU

I am sure my new laptop should also be able to do so. Any ideas what could cause the problems? I believe its some NVIDIA Optimus crap but I already set "USE NVIDIA GPU" in Nvidia control panel settings.

I wrote a long comment earlier, but I was completely wrong, haha, I don't know if you read it, sorry if you did.

So the problem you had is a problem I already had before, and I don't really know how I fixed it :D but I think it's about "installing" the monitor :D or making it "recognized"...?

I'm not sure, I had to reboot a few times, until the monitor was recognized and games were running good again, GOOD LUCK!

Edit: and try to use only one monitor, and don't use many in the same time.

No it should be something different?

For example right now:

QL runs with GPU. In fullscreen mode I can't even get 125fps. Now I switched it into window mode and look at this.. 250fps constant. ?!?!

Ok, it is midnight now. But I have spent the last few (4) hours reinstalling windows. This time I got all of the drivers directly from the manufacturers' sites.

My frame rate on Just Cause 2 went from 7fps to a perfect 60fps. Thank you for telling me to reinstall!

So now he is using the laptop without Optimus? That would also be really bad because I want it for working when I am on battery.

Also my touchscreen wouldn't work with windows 7 :/

I can't understand why it works in window mode but not in full screen mode. There must be a trick !

Did you try to add Quake Live (the .exe) in the list of programs that need to be run with the Nvidia GPU (high performance)?

Yep done already. And the nvidia GPU icon shows that one program (quakelive) is using the GPU. Also "R_lastvalidrender" show the GT 750M.

@edit: Running QL in Windows 7 compatibility mode seemed to help a little.. I am now at ~150fps - 200 fps.. but window mode still has constant 250fps.

This is a sign that you have vertical sync and/or triple buffering on. Try turning them off in the driver settings.

If this guess is correct, then you should be getting the same fps as in fullscreen if you turn off Aero.

vsync and tripple buffering is off in nvidia settings.

Windows 8.1 x64 btw.

A few more infos:

In window mode I get 250 fps. When I go back to fullscreen it needs to "load the game again" (kinda like vid_restart) which I never had before when switching between window/fullscreen.

In fullscreen mode I don't get constant 125fps.

Fullscreen & window mode have the same resolution.

R_Lastvalidrenderer is the GT 750M.

@edit: Running QL in Windows 7 compatibility mode seemed to help a little.. I am now at ~150fps - 200 fps.. but window mode still has constant 250fps.

How can any kind of help be a waste of time? :(

I already played around with the nvidia settings for the quakelive.exe and launcher.exe. I have no idea which settings would only effect fullscreen mode ?

I tried setting the priority to "Realtime" (=highest priority). Nothing changes.

Resoltion: From R_mode 23 down to 20 I get suddenly constant 250fps. However, it now looks like the game runs in window mode e.g. I see the backround of my desktop cause the game is smaller than my desktop resolution?).

R_mode 21 gives 236fps.. r_mode 22 gives a crash ;)

I also wondered about the reported CPU... but is it really wrong and if yes, what should I do about it? ;P

Be4sty you need to always be using gpu drivers that come from your manufacturer. Nvidia moderators recommend/suggest always to do a clean install if your downgrading gpu drivers. Things get left over if you do a system restore or roll back. If you ever have gpu driver problems ask your question on here -> https://forums.geforce.com/default/board/33/geforce-drivers/

I never went for stock GPU driver since this is simply the NVIDIA driver. A newer one should work just fine or does Dell expect me to use the same driver for the next 5 years?

Anyway I will give it a try.. drive sweepter (DDU) + re-install stock driver.

i had a similar problem watching shows on my tv through laptop. turned out i just had to disable the display on my laptop screen when the hdmi was plugged in

nope didnt help.

also setting resolution to 1680x1050 didnt help (fps got better.. but it caps at 236 for some reason and still drops to 200). In window mode everything is perfect.

Oh alright. Well I changed it -> Still having the same problem

1920x1080 in window mode = constant 250fps
1920x1080 in full screen mode = 130 - 200 fps

And it just won't get into my head why this problem occurs.

I have done that already. it is a QHD (3200x1800) which I currently run at 1920x1080.. both resolutions cause the same problem.

My secondary monitor runs at 1920x1080 as well.

Also I just connected to W:ET on a local server. With my old laptop I can easily handle 700fps constant. With my new one its 160fps constant.. 200fps isn't constant anymore.

Good idea.. and actually interesting:

With Intel HD4600 (so dgpu disabled in nvidia control panel) I get the same (or actually even better fps) ingame. When going into fullscreen I will NOT get constant 250 fps.

BIOS is pretty much locked.. there isn't much you can play with.
Intel Smartstep = On
Intel rapid storage / intel blabla = off
I will make a quick bios settings video.

@edit2: according to gpu-z the NVIDIA core and memory clock goes up when playing QL. There is no difference between window and fullscreen mode.

oh i thought you disabled igpu in bios when you said "I fully disabled the Intel HD 4600", seems it just doesnt switch to dgpu when you use HDMI, i met someone who had the same problem with his laptop(hdmi was only working with igpu). You may check that - if you can clone your integrated monitor on hdmi one then dgpu should work. Anyway you'd need a displayport for 120/144hz to work so better get a minidp-dp cable and check if dp works with dgpu.

my mini-dp cable should be here next week. which is pretty much my last hope.

I can use the hdmi-monitor only (=clone to hdmi monitor and disable the laptop screen) so it should use the dgpu?

As far as I know there is no way to fully disable the igpu (except in bios). I don't have a bios option for that.

I want to do a fresh install.. but I actually hoped I could find out if that laptop supports what I need before doing all the installation stuff ;D

@edit: another test:
ql in window mode:
dgpu load at 60% and igpu at 30%
ql in full screen mode:
dgpu load at 98% and igpu at 22%

You could always test without your external display to see if the problem remains. (Keep in mind that you need to use the same resolution on both for the comparison to stand)

Mhh I have the latest dell driver.. which is 10.x.x.x.x... i will download the latest intel driver which is 15.x.x.x.x.x

@edit: can't be installed. Driver is not validated for this device. Check your manufacturer website

just run the .exe, open qlive in windowed, go to taskbar, right click on Windowed Borderless Gaming, and click on "add window"

works for me, on native resolution of qlive (r_mode -2)
