I remember playing with some friend q3 offline and at cybercafe's@2003 (i never had internet till 06 or some shit) when i beat xaero in nightmare we hugged and jumped so exited. Good times, he left back to uruguay and i've never seen him again

I was able to play for more than 8h a day with bots: 1v1, 4v1, singleplayer and then go to a familiar internet cafe to play with friends for the rest of the day / night. Now it's all gone, QL does not have this thing :/

Yeah man, Q3 is the best game ever. Any other 'e-sport duel' game will fail compared to Q3.

Yeah and it's not only about game itself. I spent ridiculous amount of time just talking about it, analyzing games, watching demos (later gtv), meeting people. That was the best time of my life. I doubt that something like this will ever happen to me again.

fox, stermy, noctis, IEM, 2gd+joe casting

I don't know why but I always enjoyed noctis playing duel, even if he lost, he always kept me interested and I just find his style appealing.

Stermy and his sick pixelperfect aim, fox had some great decision making, overall you could watch the stream for the whole day, it was really entertaining, like watching a real sport event.

There is no new pros which could fill the gap of fox, stermy, noctis and cooller. Of course, there are some new good players, but they just can't do that, they aren't that great as those mentioned above to replace their places in our minds...

To me cooller's gap is filled with THE PAVEL.

For me, cooller remains the bigger name.

Yours "THE PAVEL" must win next DH and then he will become a big name for me :P

No hate on pavel, but he isn't someone really special yet, just a good player with perspectives which he can't execute yet.

in ql, noctis looked like a slightly more aggro/aim heavy version of fox, it was weird as hell to watch them duel during iem europe 2010.

I miss the freedom of old games. custom servers, community made maps, you could lan with your friends, all that kind of stuff. the more open the game was the more active the community seemed to be.

games nowadays are the complete opposite, everything is about control. logging into accounts just to access the games, companies running the servers themselves instead of letting others, content is locked down, no mods, etc. plus things nowadays are about achievements and xp grinding, so the focus is more on stats and other nonsense.

I played a lot of UT2k4 a while back so I feel the same. I miss joining servers and seeing crazy mods or interesting new maps, sometimes its mayhem and stupid but other times its cool and fun. It didn't matter what it was, it was just the idea of doing what you wanted and having the opportunity to see something new. 1.6, COD1, all games in that era were very open compared to how it is now.

even tho I'm an UT player, I feel your nostalgy, I remember having a LAN in Portugal with 100+ players only playing CTF/TDM/1v1, first prize was a mouse. Nowadays there are LAN tournaments here in portugal with 10 players and prizes are far way better which is pretty nonsense. People before lived the game so much and it was such a pleasure to meet everyone in LANs/meetings/etc, this was always just for the love of the game and its community. I felt this even more that I got back from ESWC playing SM, even tho I met great people there, it was only for that, it seemed that no one really loved the game they were playing, and it was just because there's no other hardcore fps in the competitive circuit :| and that's just sad.

I think the player count at the quakecon2012 official tournaments was over 200

Yes those days were great, TDM very active plenty of leagues where players of many skill levels could take part(barrysworld had like 80 clans or something?)

We dont need big tournaments. We need people who love the game. Look at the defrag community.

Or Age of Empires 2. The game has been getting more popular in the recent years, nearing 20 years after release, due to some community members making mods and eventually getting together with microsoft to produce official expansions.

Some popular AoE personalities had a sort of review of the year podcast recently as well:




It seems to be a combination of the HD expansions, community mods to play them / upgrade them on voobly (a platform to play online) and the Microsoft announcement of definitive editions for AoE 1, 2 and 3, the announcement of AoE 4, as well as the community becoming more active on twitch and youtube. The best player is a full time streamer with 1k twitch subscribers for example, and many others have hundreds of subscribers.

The game also had a rich guy donating to tournaments, the same guy who did Arbalet cups in CS 1.6 IIRC.

So it's a series of factors, but community interest seems to have been key in this. No idea if Microsoft would have even done anything had there not been great interest in AoE 2 mods and ultimately if the expansions made from the mods didn't sell really well.

It's interesting from a Quaker perspective given that they've experienced similar community decline and distrust with their developer; AoE3 was a big disappointment for them.

I should note that the HD expansion was sort of kind of rejected by the hardcore community due to bugs and issues playing online. It became community patched and got community mods later which made it playable online and also compatible with AoE 2 (nonHD). A similar thing happened quite recently with later HD expansions - the competitive players wouldn't play them as much as far as I know, but the new WololoKingdoms mod allows them to be played on the online platform Voobly, I assume with less gameplay issues, so they're excited to see how that goes for that scene.
