The community has been doing pretty bad lately.

Lately? where you been? that's nothing new although it really has slumped badly in the last month.

I have come to report in. Well, first off, people are really not showing up for them leagues. Like if 4 people show up in America to like each league, leagues just won't pay. It's pointless as it is. JeeSports has begun supporting American events and barely any people signed up,

it was never successful. there's simply no interest in na for this game. nothing more to discuss about it, it won't change.

the #qlpickup.us channel is doing good but I fear the elitism is slowly crawling in

avenged, mrgreen_, tucker_ and syncerror joined the channel not long ago. That changed the dynamics of the channel.

but buy premiums

premium is a waste of money, seriously. If anything people could buy pro but the price doesn't really justify the content anymore (lack thereof that is)

Can we please get the Space CTF freaks to start playing regular CTF or someshit?

they will get destroyed on other maps. can't change that now.

And what's with all the tier 3s and tier 2s playing clan arena, get those kids playing other stuff, instead of striving to play tier 4 public noob arena.

they play clan arena to escape the teambalance/stacking/tierslumming issues in CTF. Until syncerror actually applies those same fixes to ctf, ca will continue to thrive.

Oh, and I know a couple people really do cheat, and if you cheat and you're reading this, shame on you,

I would like to get people's opinion on "bad" players. Are we annoying? Are we unwelcome? I really really love this game, and I am definitely improving, but I have a long way to go. I did sign up for the ADL (qualifier #2 maybe?) at rumblepit.org, and I had to play judge_ first round. I obviously just got destroyed. But is it BAD that I signed up to play? I had fun and was glad to be a part of it. I'm an 1150 ELO dueler. I'm very good at timing (I always time ra and mega to the second), but my movement, aim, and decision making are just average. I'm really trying to contribute by making my youtube videos, where I do the audio commentaries on my duels, trying to analyze the game. Eventually, I would LOVE to do live commentary for events, like 2gd, jehar, wonko, etc. I really want to make my commentary vids using demos from pro players, but I don't want to start doing that until I feel like I have a better grasp of the game, and can actually provide the correct insight.

So I really wanted to sign up for the JeeSports tourney, but I know I'm just going to get eliminated round 1. Now that's not discouraging to me, but like you say, this culture is very elitist. I'm just trying to figure out if it bothers anyone ELSE that I sign up and play. Thoughts?

i think almost everyone would be happy to see more fresh blood participating in the more competitive environment. and the rest... well screw them ;)

the more low to mid players enter, the more fun it is for that kind of player. so i can only encourage everyone to participate no matter what his skill level is

why would it? you pinned down the crux of the problem: the community is "elitist." what you need to further realize is that this applies to society (and maybe humanity) as a whole.

everybody. is. insecure. everybody thinks they're a nuisance to everyone else. when you grow up, you start to realize people aren't all bad (this is the point where many people disavow themselves of "liberalism"), and the world starts seeming a lot less complex. you have yet to learn empathy, I think. consider your own feelings for those around you. I constantly feel like I'm a burden on people, but I can't say that I honestly feel that way myself about anyone who's around me.

even if it did bother them, fuck them, right? you sign up for what you want, not what they (don't) want.

Plus, half of them would greatly accept a chance to increase their ELO / Stats for little effort.

i was going to say lol for judging him by his elo. but then i realized u and he are making the same mistake. lets face it. qlranks is something awesome for the community. BUT it isnt really an accurate reflection of ur skill level. an elo system only works if u ensure that each player plays opponents from a variety of skill brackets consistently. most americans do not play enough duels to justify an elo system, and even if they do play a lot of duels they usually play vs their friends. under those circumstances elo is pretty meaningless.

ah yeah... theres always an excuse to remain in the delusion "youre awesome". pretty much the reason why such a huge continent only produced 2 truly outstanding players over 10 years.

no. pretty much the reason why they stand out. if someone, they would really have the right the declare themselves this way, they just dont share this mentality, so instead of being full of themselves they became really good.

how i know? im an 1300 points player myself, playing not so frequently last weeks and pretty much only player on my friends list between points of 1000 and 1600. yet i realize im not even near to be mediocre in any aspect ofthe game

elo may not reflect exactly where is your skill at, but when there is hundreds of players between the range 1600-2200 points who get there by playing anyone on any map over a low volume of games, you can be sure 1150 means youre not "very good at..." in anything.

clearly ur reading comprehension skills are somewhat lacking compared to your quake skills (no comment on those irrespective of your qlranks rating). evol just stated his qlranks rating without really using it to imply anything. it was you who made the jump to assume that what he meant was that he was a good dueler. he clearly states that altho his timing is good all his other skills are lacking (average was his word but average in comparison to what? most likely the group of players he plays with which is probably not that awesome in skill level).

dont try to roll around the fact that you made a generalization, which might or might not be warranted, but is completely irrelevant to the discussion because evol certainly wasnt acting like the stereotypical arrogant american asshole. i mean his entire post is based on the fact that he accepts that he is "bad" and he is essentially asking what the community thinks of him participating in pickups/tournaments.

ps: just wanted to comment that you also clearly havent interacted with rapha or czm much. i have altho i cant claim to be best friends with them. however i can say that as nice as they are, any conversation about quake with them is going to leave you in no doubt at all that they think they are the elite of the game. how this is relevant is beyond me.

to be good at quake you need that ego and confidence. When you lose, you have to be like

'WTF, FUCK THIS GUY, FLUKE, ILL OWN HIM NOW!' then they rup and keep playing. This is the right mentality.

The failure makes them stronger because they believe themselves to be better so they step up to the challenge once more, as opposed to actual losers, that when they fail, they quit and make excuses. Those bitches (walter, tyryl, baxley etc) will never be top tier in quake or any area of their lives.

Man, read evol's post again, then read your posts again. You were being a jerk for no reason. He clearly wasn't bragging -- he admitted he's not very good, then did a quick summary of his skill level in different areas, as he understands it. He said he's "very good" at timing, but admitted that his decision-making is "average". So he wasn't claiming to have awesome control, just saying that he's fine at the 'counting' part.

The pickup channel is being moderated to allow everyone to enjoy the game. We're doing the best we can.

jeesports barely did any advertisement for their first north american tourney. that was pretty shocking to be honest. i didnt even hear of it. and most of my friends didnt either. so it isnt surprising they barely got any signups.

the numbers for csn/rumblepit arent that encouraging either. i mean i understand the "pro" players moving on and then not playing in regular tournaments. but i dont really get all the mid tier duelers who play every single day not signing up for tournaments. i think its simply cos in the end most of the american duelers are pussies who just dont want to get their asses kicked in tournaments. even tho that means theyre never going to get better. o well.

im optimistic about the pickup channel. i havent had too much time to play but already from the few pickups ive played im seeing a lot of new players improving fast. to those guys i say keep going, ignore the trolls/elitists or better yet tell them to fuck the hell off. if someone shouts at you in mumble for not being as good just mute them. (even if the "them" in question is me, or maybe especially if its me xD).

i think the important thing is to keep the pickup channel going and maybe try some draft tournaments soon. and perhaps encourage the mid-tier players to form teams/clans. maybe just maybe that will revive the scene.

I ran a league with pretty staggering numbers given the amount of available players, but it died just as quickly as it was given life.

I also try and sign up for any tournament that I can play in, provided I have the time and my internet isn't being all crappy.

I had the idea of trying to do a North America Region-based TDM tournament, similar in format to the Nations Cup. We have 8 regions, each including about 4-8 states (along with west/east Canada), and get players from each region to compete. Quite a few people in the pickup channel were interested in it. Also, like you have always told me, single-day events do nothing. We need continuous play spread throughout a set period of time.

What about dividing pugs in low and high skill? !add ctflow, or !add ctfhigh, same applies to TDM.

One of the things that makes beginners (like me) dislike pugs is the dominance of the best players that join, and the whining of usually mid-level players. I even one time saw some dude leave the pug as soon as I joined, because I said I was quite new to TDM. That made me not join there for weeks, because I didn't want to bother them in their 'elitosphere', until I felt I had sufficiently improved by playing in a clan.

Back then I would be much more encouraged to play in a '!add tdmlow' pug.

Not enough players that care about pickups in NA imo.

I guess it would be preferable if you found a friend who is similar skillwise and add with him (so each team gets one of you).

hey. going to give you some advice based on my experiences starting with cpmpickup back in 2007. first off u need to stop comparing yourself to advanced players. its really irrelevant how they are dominating the game as long as you get something out of the game yourself, whether thats just having fun or trying to learn.

one of the things that was a huge help to cpm pickup newbs was the fact that we didnt have voice comms back then so the pickup info link gave a list of binds that were useful. and also gave some basic tactics that you might think about. the awesome thing about binds is that just the process of setting them up makes you put some thought into when they are used.

so going into pickups, what i suggest you do is to just set a role for urself. put some thought into what you can and cannot do. if youre playing a ctf pickup try playing the position you think you're good at and see how well you did and why you did bad if u got dominated. try also playing some positions that you are not comfortable with (dont fall into the trap of doing the same thing over and over, usually it gets boring and u get frustrated).

speaking from experience, people tend to get raged/frustrated/unhappy in pickups only when they focus too much on what others are doing. if instead you focus on what you are doing, you tend to have fun.

ps: this is my take on it. there are however people who enjoy running around randomly in pickups and getting raged when they then get raped. evidently thats their idea of fun. to each their own i guess :)

id doesn't have money to support the project any more and it will only go downhill unless something happens and it will properly not.
I don't know if syncerror is working on a map or update but it will properly not help a lot either since the new generation of players/gamer are into CoD/BF3/LoL or whatever.

I still think a lot of blame goes to id for the lack of support for there project. They clearly ain't doing much to keep this community alive or what's left of a split community.

I can't find a server where I'm below 100 ping, and even though it says 100ping it feels like 150.

Its like after one update my ping went from 20 to dallas to 65 to 100 recently, wtf?

Also, not renewing my subscription until id shows they care about the game and try and improve it.
