They dislike piracy for two reasons, both of which you seem to be completely oblivious to.

1. Yes they need money. They make a living from developing computer games. Ever had a job? Ever lived outside your parents basement?

2. Even if they don't need the money to survive they expect you to pay for what's practically theirs. Not paying for it is stealing and basically like saying that you can take whatever they own without paying for it because they can't do anything about it.

And drop the "it's not stealing"-argument. No you're not stealing a physical product, you are however stealing the result of their hard work. Further skip the argument that they aren't losing money from piracy, out of all the people downloading their products a certain percentage would, if piracy wasn't an option, buy the product instead.

And what do you think that percentage would be? 5, 10?

Only a complete and utter moron would claim that not one of the millions of people who frequently download games would pay for some of the games if forced to. It's such a ridiculous belief that it can only be topped by the opinion that developers should be happy that their games are stolen by people who refuse to give them any money for what they have produced.

@Nzro0 I'd say between 10% and close to 25% for the more popular releases. The rest are just stealing the cookies without being hungry.

what developers need to do are two things, for the sake of adaptation:
1. ask for LESS money for their games (this way more people afford to buy games)
2. give advantages to the people who buy their product

Companies have to change their old mentality and to consider piracy competition on their own product not stealing, competition they have to beat by offering true advantages to the people who buy.

It's 21th century, you can't treat intellectual products as physical products with small modifications as long as there is a bidimensional connection between the producer and the client. Producers have to adapt, things like "you don't do it because it's not moral" doesn't work anymore these days, I'm not gonna take into discussion the complexity of the moral interogation and it's a state of contradiction because many companies that now complain about the piracy made their money from practicing it or encourageing it at some level (consider creativity in the same boat here).

If I understood corectly Microsoft already understood the complex situation on piracy so they use some of piracy's aspects to their own benefit. For instance I think there were some studies who revealed that there are more people who buyed software on Windows than the people who buyed Windows, so Microsoft tries to profit on this by imposing their software on Windows, or makes agreements with other software companies, all based on the increased number of Windows users, from which most doesn't possessed Windows licence, but keep buying software for this platform. Also I think I have read an interesting thing about xbox, that xbox is moddable because Microsoft wanted to, in order to gain more buyers against PS3.

Bottom line is, only suckers see piracy as pure evil, while smart people treat it as it is and tries to adapt and make more money on it.

The concept of "forced" in this discussion is very clear, it refers to the lack of any alternative methods of gaining the product without paying for it in any way.

I can't understand how it is acceptable to download a game without paying for it just because you think of it as bad. Would you care to explain that? Seems weird to me to justify theft that way. Besides, the argument is inconstant with the fact that the most downloaded games are often perceived as the best games by the market.

So once more please explain why it is OK to steal someones work.

the problem is some people can afford shit and some cant but the corporations scale prices not to make shit affordable to the most people at todays low delivery costs but to make the most profit even though half of people who want it just can't afford it even though someone, somewhere else can afford it at a much lower price. it is not just a problem of the games industry though. pricks act like supply and demand is yin and yang to feel more important than you.

As I mentioned in another thread, Piracy is just trash talk from publishers, for the most part. Anyone who cries about piracy should learn from Steam (Valve) and EA. No physical discs, no fancy retail boxes. Buy a game online at some awesome discounts that would never be available on a retail box in your nearest store, download the game and play as you like. DRM is a bad thing, but digital content delivery and anti cheat system (VAC) combined in one package and that too on a free platform like Steam, is a gift to anyone who likes collecting and playing games.

The worst part is the pricing on the part of the publishers. Take Modern Warfare 2 for example. It's $60 throughout the world for PC. Activision obviously forgot that people in developing nations (which are more vulnerable to piracy) cannot shell out that much money. GTA 4 sold like hotcakes in India at Rs. 500 ($10-15). Everyone has an original copy, simply because it was affordable. But when you talk about Activision who even refused to have retail in India, people turned to piracy. You cannot price things the same everywhere because denominations vary in each part of the world. You know what's funny? COD4's QA Testing was done in Bangalore, India.
