q4 movement was $$$$$$$$$$$

it was just too sluggish for the machines of that time. you needed a proper gaming rig to run it smoothly and the 60 fps cap was weird too. now everyone has a netbook and cant run it anyways. q3 ran on anything, ql runs on anything, thats why we have a community.

IMO, they didn't have enough performance optimizing settings when the game was new.

For example, in 1.0 you cant even force ambient lighting.

r_lightdetaillevel 9 was used for this purpose back in 1.0

and the engine has a visportal bug, which makes it stutter

Watching the holysh1t stream cause i was bored. But the stream is incredibly bad. The fov is very low and the game(not the stream) very laggy which makes it unwatchable.

Why did quake 4 fail?

No one at id (they are just as responsible) or Raven cared about the multiplayer component of the game. Remember id sold over a million copies of doom 3 there most successful game, in terms of sales to date. id said few users bothered to use the multiplayer componenet of the game, So multiplayer in quake 4 appears to have been an afterthought: Plain and simple - for example it took a year just to get an auto download feature to allow for new maps. No servers, bad net code, 60 fps, bah, - personally I loved the strafe slide, so that fuk ups like me who couldn't strafe jump accurately could actually maneuver around a corner and carry their speed. 1.30 was their best version, after that it was all down hill.
