*Tip*

Once you re-install a fresh copy of windows install all of your software and essential updates, then make a second partition (20-30 gig is good) and mirror the drive.
Start/Run/msconfig/bootini, change timeout to 3 seconds.
Excluding games I doubt anyone would have over 15 gig of essential apps so it's not a big deal space wise.

If anything major goes go wrong you simple select the mirrored partition, delete and format the old one then repeat the process so you always have a backup.

I had that in the past too.

The best solution I found it to have two hard drives.

One hard drive to put all your pictures/photo's/mp3's/video and backups of important software etc.

Then on the othe drive just use it for essential programs.
So if your OS messes up you can always read and quickly recover your "warez" type stuff.

If you put everything on one hard drive, you're asking for problems.

You system will run a lot faster too.

P.S.
It's quite easy to recover "lost files". Unless there's a mechanical error in the hard drive.
Look for data recorvery programs. Might take a day or so but worth it if there's some stuff you really need.

well I did that too, problem is the harddrive with the mp3s and all crashed and with crashed I mean nothing was moving and I had to send it in. so now I'm going for two 250gb drives and will just mmirror everything that's important to me.

Sounds like a hardware problem.
Try it on a different PC and see if it blue screens on that.

If it does then you know it's probably a fault with the drive.
Also you will want to look at the jumper settings. Have a play around.

Be careful. Not wise to invoke too many BSOD.

What he said, boot from the XP cd, rapair, enter admin password, fixmbr :< (or fixboot?)

He's missing the kernel. Fixboot/Fixmbr aren't going to do anything to fix that, it's a system file.

If you fuck up your bootfile you'll get the same message. (It's also a known error when people try to change their loadingscreen).

Eh, I suppose that could be true, but I've seen it happen more where the file really is gone. Usually a virus that takes it out or the hard drive developed an error that erased it.
