delete your current config and it should recreate a fresh one

I don't have a q4config.cfg. The game will not launch due to the error I listed so it doesn't create one at launch =D

Assuming it works similar as in Q3, the default cfg is written after Q4 has already loaded the internal default settings, it just writes them down to the q4 cfg afterwards, but usually it's executed like this:

- internal settings
- quake4.cfg
- autoexec.cfg

So I'm afraid a new quake4.cfg won't help you.

Im starting to think that you're right about the default q4config. I don't really get what's up though. My system meets the minimum requirments and the error I get at launch seems like an error it would give if the game were configured for the wrong type of processor (intel instead of amd).

Has anyone else gotten this error and resolved it? Or any other suggestions outside of buying a new processor? >_<

You did creat your own cfg before you launched the game after install, right? Reinstall, start the game, quit and create your cfg and it will work.

The problem is that the game never is able to launch to create a config. When I try to start the game I get the above mentioned error:

CPU does not support the Intel Streaming SIMD Extensions (SSE)

And that's it. This is displayed in the launch box which is idientical to the dedicated server window of quake 3 or doom 3 etc... After install I didn't have a q4config.cfg or a default.cfg or any other .cfg honestly. I have sense tried creating an autoexec.cfg and a q4config.cfg both with blank sys_cpustring entries, because I suspect this may be the problem.

I've also tried deleting these, trying again and removing the sys_cpustring from the config file. No matter what I try the end result has always been persistant and that is that error message I just described.

mine is similar, except it tells me, "Couldn't load default.cfg - Check your working folder". I shouldn't have these probs after spending almost 50$ for this game

Make sure your files are in the correct folders, sounds like you're launching quake4.exe from somewhere outside the main Q4 directory and then it won't find q4base and all the necessary files in there.

Iam running everything from inside as well, but still the same error i mentioned above.

but what i did because i didnt have a dvd rom i had to use my mums
i installed it onto hers then i copied the WHOLE directory to my comp. after that its been saying ERROR: Couldn't load default.cfg - Check your working folder. now its being a bitch

Maybe you're lacking some registry keys which contain the working directories (don't know if Q4 installs such stuff), gonna check when I got the time to do it.

edit: maybe check what is written in

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\id\Quake 4

there are a few keys that might be important (InstallDrive, InstallPath, SPexe)

IT has nothing to do with sound drivers (openal) , it has nothing to do with install paths / configs it has purely to do with you cpu supporting intel streaming simd emulation (amd case, intel has allways supported it natively since the p3) or not and it being recognised and supported by your motherboard or not . Anything below Athlon XP , Athlon M , Sempron wont work as they dont have sse emulation =) . They do have 3dnow wich is basicly the same bs with a diferent name ( but using that wouldnt force you to upgrade anymore having companies lose big cash) <- wiked

Sad to see a p3 450 is compatible and an Athlon 1.4 (1700+) isn't

I have a server in chicago and i uploaded all the files off of my quake 4 cd and now i need to no how to setup a map rotation file. If some one could write one for me and put all the maps in it then emai it to [email protected]

Well I had the same problem in q3. If I installed the game, and took my old cfg (which i had backuped) and putted it in the quake3 folder before I had start the game 1 time, the game couldn't seem to find a cfg. Didn't help if I deleted it o anything.
I just had to reinstall the game, start the game so it created a cfg, and then quit and put my old cfg in the folder.

Same prob with my AMD XP 2000

Had the same problem with my 1700 XP. Modified the CPU and Memory Clock speed in the BIOS and it worked. Looks like an O/C issue?

I have got AMD Duron 880Mhz , Ge Force 4 Ti 4800 128 DDR , 512 sdram 133 Mhz and Quake 4 no start and Doom 3 allright .... this is a very interesting problem ....

this stuff just sucks, how can they relise a game that has such problems with sse, mine works fine though but my friend cant play with me on mutliplayer, that just awful

Quake 4 _requires_ SSE. It's not a bug.

all amd xp processors got it... u just most find a way to activate it

damn that little quake 4 SSE prob is getting on my nerves ive been dying to play the game and all i get is that stupid messege how come when i play doom it runs smooth but yet when i try to run quake 4 it doesnt run at all, there shouldnt even be a fix on this crap ID software shoulda fixed this prob when this game was in fuck!ng beta testing, but i guess they rushed the release and the hell with quake 4 players

I to have the game not recognising my processor an xp2400 have been on the phone to activision quake support they say they havnt had the problem before and suggested a bios update. I have ugraded all drivers and same problem. Microsoft technical support have also been very helpfull but not resolved the problem yet. Seems like a lot of people are affected by this.

I have finally fixed the problem with a bios update to the motherboard.

Solution 1: Update the BIOS.

If an updated BIOS with SSE (Streaming SIMD Extensions) support is available from the motherboard manufacturer's website, download and install it.


Solution 2: Enable SSE.

If your processor supports SSE, make sure it is enabled.


To enable SSE, do one or both of the following tasks:

-- Download and install the latest BIOS for the motherboard.

-- Download WCPUID, a freeware utility that displays information about your computer's CPU, from http://hp.vector.co.jp/authors/VA002374/src/download.html . Follow the on-screen instructions to install and run it. If WCPUID indicates that your processor supports SSE, choose Tweaks > AMD Athlon MP/4 SSE Control > SSE Enable to enable SSE. Note: Using WCPUID to enable SSE requires you to reenable SSE each time you restart the computer.

In what way is the problem the same? You get the "no SMID instructions" message?

Or do you just get a message about default.cfg? If so, I guess you forgot to copy the pak*.pk4 and *lang*.pk4 files from your q4 CD into your q4base dir.

If that doesnt work, you should probably post your whole console log so that we can see whats actually wrong.

Probably best not to ressurect threads from 2005 to ask this tho. :)

2a. I don't have anything against AMD!!!! I had my own 2400 Athlon.

2b. Why I moved to Intel, well I have a P3, 366(time wasting!) & 766MHz CPU, 1GB RAM 20GIG HDD. I'm running Q4 on there dedicated. No crap! The error:

IS THE VIDEO RENDERING(Video card, DIRECT X) THATS UNDER SPEC. (IT10T as it may seem) I tried to RDP(RDP doenst load Video card files, Direct X, OPEL GL) and run the Q4 server and thats how I found the solution to it.

The motherboard, CPU and the other problem to AMD dudes, GOOD LIKE, thats why I went INTEL.

PS Im smiling all the way!! RUNNING 2GHz Core 2, 4GIG RAM, 1TB HDD, nVidia 8800.

Nice bit of grave digging of old topics. Shame your post doesn't make much sense ;)

The error message "Couldn't load default.cfg - Check your working folder." is really quite explicit - it cannot find default.cfg (which is inside the pak*.pk4 files), and the most likely cause is that your working directory is wrong (eg "start in" folder of a shortcut, or cd into the right directory in unix). The other likely cause is simply not having the pk4's from the dvd in a server-install.

All this stuff about processors, motherboards, bios upgrades etc are completely unrelated to that message - there are different messages for not having SSE etc.
