Hope they dont inbreed their playstyles to much with no player variation!

This. Rapha has the tightest, most relentless game I've almost ever seen in Quake.. he simply does not tilt, his decision making is just impeccable to the point of genius. In order to beat him you have to do something unbelievably outrageous (aimwise) or catch him off guard by sheer luck a bunch of times, which happens, but not 3 games in a row it seems. The other way of course is to beat him at his own game, and someone like Cooller could do this, but I don't think his game is as solid overall.

He reminds me, hilariously, of how another Rapha, Nadal, plays tennis. Relentless, calculating defense, pushing on the opponents weakness in position until they break down and give up a frag/point. Fortunately for Rapha the Quake player his knees and body aren't going to break down from covering the map with such potent intensity.

After this tourney and seeing how his game just thrives on high speed overaggression, which rattles Cooller but seemingly empowers Rapha, he's my pick to win IEM. I think the biggest threats to him are the similar but more audacious Cooller (if he can find a way to beat the Av3ks/Cyphers of the world) or the Roger Federer of the Americans, Dahang. Dahang is another relentless player with very few leaks strategically, but he seems to over rely on his aim sometimes to bring him back into the game, when sometimes he could benefit from sitting back and waiting for an obvious mistake.

I have to agree. The comparison with Nadal is quite good, but unfortunately Nadal isn't the most entertaining player to watch either.
Then again you don't have to make a show of winning. In the end it's all about winning. Yesterday rapha was impressive.

If av3k can control his whiney head he can beat rapha. Cypher sometimes lacks a bit of creativity out of control so I'm curious how he's gonna grab rapha.

Anyways IEM world will be epic again. People thought the euros took a lead on the US players, but i'm not that sure anymore :D

Why go for that RA with like 30h and 30 seconds to go whilst in the leed? :o
Another controversial Cooller game. You've gotto give it to Cooller, that was probably should have been his. I mean, that DM13 game - I think Dahang unplugged the connection at the SK office to cause a restart because Cooller had the advantage with the game tied at 1-1 and almost over... ;)
I think of all 3 maps played (well, 2.8 maps) Cooller was in control the majority 60-70% of the time. He also got the most frags, all in all :)
Well played though, Rapha - looking very strong and clever. Was a very entertaining game. :) God knows who's going to win Rapha vs Av3k?! I would actualy say maybe Av3k after beating Dahang quite convincingly.

True, but for all the shit he gets on here for being "+back" he truly does play incredibly smart (always picking fights in areas where he could easily fall back on armor/health). Furthermore, his defensive style doesn't really rely on rail, which is really what impresses me.

Thoughts? First half might be true. We're talking about a 100E online cup after all. Which is unlikely to receive the same care and preparation as a major lan tournament would.

Looked like kind of a let down towards our american guests though, who apparently made an effort and tried to shine. Not very friendly towards cup sponsors either.

Apart from that, most of the heat seems to relate to upcoming iem and maybe exaggerated expectations regarding this weekend cup. Guess it wouldn't hurt to cool things down a bit and maybe put them into proper perspective.

i completely disagree.

The only time when raging can be acceptable is when a person is in control, and needs to let others know that they are doing a shitty job.
If someone does a shitty job himself and then starts raging he makes himself look bad, and if it happens at work might have to start looking for a new employment.
In this case, I think it's safe to assume that there are sponsors who pay money for Avek's travel or equipment. I don't think they are too happy about avek's representation.

Sure, it's "cool" to be the rebel and don't care about all the people with the money. But ...

At the same time you have to acknowledge that these online cups are pretty much a clownery especially when a bunch of top players are competing against each other. Because the skill difference is so paper thin that, even at a lan, a fly landing on your nose can decide a grand final.

And much more can - and does - a 30 ping difference or some other technicality on the way to the server give the decisive advantage. I mean, as much as we like to talk about "esports", while lan tournaments may, and just may, rightfully be called so, online cups certainly can't. They are a leisure time get together at best.

And avek says it just right. Once you have that disadvantage it's easy to get raped. I for one totally understand that. And how could we expect perfect sportsmanship where the conditions aren't entirely fair in the first place? That doesn't make any sense at all.

Of course would he, or anybody, try and likely succeed in maintaining composure as long as he's going to win despite disadvantages. It's when you might be going to lose that you start wondering why that is happening and maybe get angry about one or the other thing. Which explains why he didn't complain before.

I do agree though that he shouldn't be given a free pass when behaving like that. Like given map restarts and similar. Which didn't happen in this case, he lost the game and the prize money. And maybe the sympathy of some folks who didn't get the show they might have expected. Where he still might compensate for that later.

Pings really can matter. Not just the difference, but the absolute value too. And while some can feel good at higher pings, others can not.
For example, I thought that ping is just an excuse when there were no russian servers and I played on european ones with pings like 50-90. To me the game felt ok at those pings and really I didn't even understand what the fuss was about when people talked like "ah, he won becase of ping", etc. For me there was little difference, whatever ping I had.
Then russian servers appeared and I got used to play with LAN ping (rus server is actually situated on the same LAN as me). It was feeling slightly better than I felt 50 was but still I didn't thought it was much difference.
Then after playing for a month on rus only servers I once joined a game on a german server with ping of about 45. And OMG it was SO DIFFERENT FEEL I couldn't believe it. Everything was weird: rockets that I thought I surely dodged were still hitting me, rails were hitting me behind corners, enemies suddenly were strafing from my close range rockets with exceptional ease, and stuff like that. And I already felt it on just 45 ping which is considered fairly low, all because I played too much on LAN.
So this is an example that ping really CAN matter for some players. Even if you never experienced how ping can mess up your game, it doesn't mean that it isn't an important factor for others.

It does matter, but I think americans tend to overestimate cups that are being held on a weekly basis here in 'euro'. I was impressed by rapha (& dahang), but to say they're better than cooller/cypher/avek is a bit early, no? If anything, it's an indicator of how close these 5 are to each other, and it promises to deliver firework in Hannover!

Let me just give everyone this little anecdote with regard to the +back whine in this thread. A long time ago, in a competitive scene far far away, there were a bunch of Doom players vying for the title of best 1v1 player.. the competition was really intense, and the final chapter of that games scene (in NA) was written by two brothers from Canada. The vast majority of the top players game revolved around ramping up the speed and aggression of their play, 3x wall running around the maps at insane speeds, flick shotgunning each other in an ultra fast paced fly-by battles. Crazy amounts of frags per minute, games that finished in under 20 minutes with the win rule of 'first player to hit 100 frags and check out of the map'.

Two relatively unknown players from Canda, SSlasher and his brother Galieu, showed up to a tournament and turned the conventional wisdom of how the game was supposed to played on it's head. Instead of flying around the map they waited, patiently, for an opportunity to strike. Fly around a corner hoping they will miss you from the sheer speed of your movement? Nope. Full blast double barreled shotgun to the face was your reward for rushing them. They played a patient, calculating game of corner murder, dodging out from behind walls for a split second and taking half your health with one blast, and then waiting for your next move. Their game of limiting your opportunity to strike to a tiny window of time and punishing you for any hint of overextending was baffling, totally against the conventional wisdom, and ridiculously effective. Nobody could touch them, they played such an agonizingly slow game of cat and mouse that everyone hated playing them, but couldn't help but be in sheer awe of their aura of invincibility. People called them lame campers, and accused them of ruining the spirit of the game, which until then had been dominated by reaction times and precise aim in split second rush attacks. but the undeniable fact was they had taken the game of 1v1 Doom2 to it's next logical step way ahead of anyone. They had cut out the speed but retained the aim and taken positioning to the level of art form.

Anyway, Quake, especially Quake 3, is a great game because it teeters constantly on the balance of two different philosophies to dueling. Back when we watched Cypher dominate virtually uncontested with his ultra high speed game of aimbot aggression, giving his opponents zero time to get into a rhythm, and embarrassing their aim with his ridiculous lg and rocket jump attacks that came from seemingly nowhere, we thought 'this is it, nobody who can't match this pace is going to beat these aimbot kids who never give you a moments rest.'

Now someone comes along and takes the game that Jibo was having great success with and even somehow increases it's effectiveness and you want to say +back lame? No. +brain incredible. +Ultimate defense. +holy shit that was masterful.

Yeah, I mean, it just disappoints me that there is this negative perception of really disciplined, controlled defensive strategy. It's not like Rapha is some newbie who runs away from any fight and gets by on sheer lucky +back spam. He moves around the map in this way that allows him to get items while inviting his opponent to attempt an attack that favors his position. This is not a trivial skill, it's not a gimmick, it's a calculated way of manipulating the flow of the game to favor the defensive posture he prefers. It's fucking ruthless in it's effectiveness, and anyone who appreciates the nuances of the game should give credit to Rapha's ability to consistently employ this strategy to gain positive results. After all, what matters in a tourney, how sexy you look moving around the map or the scoreboard at the end of 10 minutes?

I'm just dying to see how this tourney plays out on LAN.

That's a fairly naive viewpoint which basically amounts to a "win at any cost" maxim. And the vast majority of professional sports people will call bs on that. Because sports, at least as long as it's supposed to sell, is also meant to deliver a show.

Look for example at some Vladimir Klitschko who basically ruined heavyweight boxing these recent years. He does win alright, which you may call masterful. But his fights are consistently a drag to watch.

Especially because there's a sense that it isn't about the fight any more but only the end result and nothing else. Which is a mind set that can drive all life out of pretty much anything.

Okay, first of all, I like watching Vlad box, I think he's excellent. The heavyweight division is a shadow of what it once was, and there's a reason for that, and it sure as hell isn't the Klitschko brothers fault that they can win most fights just throwing jabs. Rapha Nadal is my favorite tennis player to watch. My dad hates him, thinks he's boring. Your definition of entertainment is your own, so don't assume there aren't people entertained by watching Rapha shut down a map for 10 minutes and win by 1 frag to zero. I enjoy the hell out of it thank you very much.

I understand that you do. And I'm not surprised that you enjoy Vladimir Klitschko just the same. Because you already said that it's only the result that counts, didn't you?

Doesn't change the fact though that the overwhelming majority doesn't. Regarding boxing, it's been another type of fighters who made that sport popular. Passionate boxers who tried to prove themselves in the ring. And not on the score board only.

Just the same, I don't believe I've ever seen something as anti climatic as the dubai ql finale. Watching the often quoted paint dry on the wall would have been more exciting than that. For reasons already mentioned.

And regarding something else you said above, about taking the game to "the next level". It should occur to you that the defensive style is entirely retro. Because back in 2000 players were a lot more concerned with avoiding frags instead of making some than they are these days.

In fact, that's what rapha's been profitizing on. That until recently nobody cared anymore about giving away a free frag or two. Because nobody would expect you to hide your butt in dark corners once you got them.

So that's all it presumably takes, adapting - once again - to the defensive style. What dahang apparently already did, because that would be why he's getting a grip on rapha's ass lately. And it'll be interesting to see what the euros do. I don't envy them though for the gameplay style he's forcing on them.

Like I try to keep saying, there is more to Rapha's game than +back, it's the way he makes it work, the movement, the timing, the traps and the counterattacks, it's fun to watch him think his way around his opponent and not make mistakes doing it. Trust me, if this was easy to do more people would do it. It's very easy to be too defensive and give away all the items and just get raped. If you think the flashy +forward rj style is the only style to be respected well, I guess you hate most players. Most people do a mix of both. Even rapha's game is a mix of both, he just does not give away cheap frags trying to gamble. I don't think that makes him boring.

I'm not sure what's flashy about trying to make as many frags as possible. As opposed to making that one more frag which is gonna secure you the win. The beloved end result you've been talking about. Which, again, is the way rapha plays. Gain an advantage, possibly during the first minutes, and then fall back to securing it.

Now, to you that style might be a revelation. But just the other day I've been watching a q3 demo between cooller and polosat1y back from 2002, where the latter has been playing pretty much that style. Which became largely extinct during that time anyway.

And of course it's always a mix. Also rapha needs to make a frag at some point doesn't he. We are obviously talking about the priorities, the main focus. Which is after all what you are talking about when prioritizing the "scoreboard".

Now, rapha has had some success last year which I largely attribute to two factors: the surprise effect. And players feeling like they couldn't be arsed. I expect the whole lot of them to be better prepared this time though. And we'll see how far it'll take him now soon enough.

The whole lot except maybe a player like avek. Because, to stretch our boxing analogy a little more, he would be the Tyson of the game. The dude attacking no matter what. And between Klitschko and Tyson I don't have to think a second whom I would consider the real, full fledged and purebred contender. Even if some people consider it to be "smarter" to use any means available and secure the win.
