Sponsorship is close to impossible to get here (Australia) and flights to Taiwan are not cheap (~$700 or more 1 way...)

It's ridiculous that Australian's and Kiwi's need to qualify in Asia if they want to play in the World Finals. We should have our own set of qualifiers... even if we only get 1 spot @ the world finals.

Maybe things will change for the next IEM season.

Just had some time to look it up. Actually it is an interesting linguistic case.

"I wouldn't be surprised" as an isolated phrase is directly translated into German in every dictionary.
Which literally means that a person would not enter a state of being surprised if something happens. Unrelated to whether he actually expects it to happen or not.

However, what those dictionaries don't say is that the combination with a conditional clause alters the meaning. In that case the meaning changes, and it does make a statement about the exspectation, which is not the case in the German phrase. Therefore the translation suddenly becomes wrong.

Seems like I have to apologize, my intended meaning of my first initial statement was exactly as I explained later. Fucking English and its exceptions ... :<

So, I guess thanks for letting me learn another one.

prize money doesn't really help IMO. i can't really talk about other Asian countries but at least in India, a lot of gaming still happens primarily in LAN centers and not online. this means more closed communities, lack of exposure or information about upcoming tournaments, restricted access to demos/vods and other things that could help you become a better player... and most importantly, NOOB FRIENDLY TEAM GAMES like CS and Dota are played because people come there with their friends just to have a good time.

or FFA on dm17.

believe me, i've tried a whole lot to promote Quake in this country: organized tournaments, helped newer players, helped set up servers and even put in my own money for them. nothing helped.

QL in India is a lost cause. i rounded up a few people and we were even willing to donate a box for the server to run on but no ISP / GSP was interested in sponsoring bandwidth.

i kinda lucked out once Singapore put up a server as my ISP pings 50 to it but the rest of the Indian players get 100+ :/

Would you have preferred we spent 40 mins shitting all over the less-than-stellar gameplay? I can definitely see how tonight's matches were frustrating for anyone who has been playing or following Quake 3/Quake Live for a while though. I didn't expect this level of gameplay at the LAN champs.

Perhaps Jibo and Prozac can bring some solid frags. Still... you gotta start somewhere, I guess.

that's not fair at all. everyone should get his chance and that tourney might give a decent boost into the asian quake-scene. if their players increase, and guys like prozac, jibo and rocketboy train with them as the flagships of their continent, they have good chances, to get into a mid/high-shape within the next few months. quake needs to grow, no matter how ugly some steps seem to look like, cause every public demonstartion of that great game is good for it's future. so let's just hope, that the quake-virus infects as much of the guys living there as possible, for some new contenders!

imho, this tournament isn't a true measure of talent in Asia. for many of them it's their first big LAN or at least... a big one after a really long time. i don't think unleashed has participated in a big tournament since WSVG Quake 4. Mustaine plays better (i.e smarter) online with 100+ ping. there are a few Singaporeans and Koreans who couldn't attend. no visa for Rocketboy.

sure, there's no Asian player atm who can really compete with the top European or American players but i think there's potential. we're not a complete write off like some people seem to think. if only there were more tournaments this side of the world.

If you keep nurturing the well-known pro players from Europe, then you will shrink the pro scene. Perhaps the players that live and play Quake Live in Asia are not as skilled as the Europeans or Americans, but who is giving them a chance to improve?

If they don't take part in the Intel Extreme Masters, then how will they improve? How will they find reasons for their sponsors to pay for their flight to a DreamHack or a QuakeCon? They won't magically start being able to challenge high skilled opponents if they never play against them.

So be disgusted all you like, but we want to nurture all of esports instead of putting money into the same 8 players year in and year out.

You do realize how 'cheated' some people feel when they see players of that level getting to LANs and shit when they themself are above those players skill level? Except in the online qualifiers they get crushed by those 8 before mentioned pros... (and I'm not talking about myself here because I suck ass)

It's just that the format you're running these cups in doesnt mean best players get to go, just those that are either top8 of the world or happen to live in somewhere without any competition..

If your #1 priority was pumping high level players up to pro level and expanding the PRO SCENE, you'd be running more LAN cups with prizes in countries that already have a big amount of active middle-high level players instead of this, but obviousy it wouldnt bring even close to the same amount of viewers. And that's all right, we understand that you are running a business, just drop the holier than thou attitude

i think most of EU already has access to high skill to pro level play online and on a daily basis? why is it so bad that the whole of Asia gets one opportunity since maybe ESWC 2007 Quake4. the reason your average players are better than those at IEM Asia is because you already have a thriving scene with weekly tournaments and what not.

Sure we can practise against each other and we do have cups, but obviously Carmac's point was to get more players to LANs and expand the pro scene like he said. The cups that we have here are dominated every week by those excact players Carmac said not to keep nurturing.

We did have a finnish scene cup a while back, but obviously a just for fun cup with no prizes and 100% online wont make anyone practise like an IEM would.

I think Carmac's post was about getting more people to take competition seriously and the way to do that is to motivate middle-high level players to compete, but sadly theres hardly any motivation besides fun for most people

My point was not to get more players to LANs. We can't afford to run 120 LANs a year in all regions. But the Finnish players can probably play vs. most of Europe on a relatively fair ping.

Every week there's an online cup where they can get beaten by spartie and, if they are persistent enough, they can take a map from him and eventually start beating him. They have nothing to complain about.

Of course it could be much better - you guys could have the ESL Pro Series like the Germans, but you're blessed compared to the Asians.

I live in Germany now and I honestly think that I could become an international class gamer if I put enough time into it (provided that I have the talent).

like i mentioned in another post of mine around here, there are other players in Asia who could probably do better than what you have seen here in this tournament but they aren't attending.

i'm not sure about how it is in Finland but don't you guys get good pings across EU? about the people who are dominating your online cups, i don't see that as a bad thing at all. you can only get better if you play people better than you. at least you can play them on a server and slowly try to figure out new things that might help you put up a better fight.

a tournament like IEM Asia is probably the only way a mid tier Asian player would get to play someone better than him (i mean someone he can actually learn something from). until Prozac came along, there was probably nobody in Japan who could beat unleashed. how could he get better? it's the same in Singapore, India, Malaysia, Taiwan etc.

regarding Carmac's post, they can probably have only one tournament per region. gone are the hey days of WCG and ESWC with their local qualifiers in many countries.

"Pro" gaming is a business, dude. Because somebody has to eventually cough up those prize purses and whatever.

You want to raise attention levels amongst possible sponsors world wide, you better give asian players a bite at the apple too. And who knows, in the end a japanese company might end up sponsoring your favorite european player.

Apart from that, I totally enjoy those dudes trying to show some good, offensive games these days. You definitely can't say that they were not working for those two slots they got.

It's an entire ecosystem where a lucrative tournament cannot exist without a nurtured community. The thing is that the community is the root, not the tournament. So if this means running a "not as awesome" event if it means that next year it will be better, I will do it in a hearbeat.

Ok, lets use Finland as an example. The level of players is higher and if you did IEM Finland instead, most of the high level players would practise, and the next year the event would be even better. Same as in Asia, except Asia has a lower starting level and 129083219 more viewers. So dont even try to say you're doing it to get more high skill players get to pro level or to get the highest possible competition out there. You're just doing it to get more exposure for ESL, like I said in my first post and theres nothing wrong with that

Yeah of course I do, but like it has been repeated many times in this thread, the best competition is not there, and some guys who are just as good or even better than prozac or unleashed dont get to go either.

edit: and like said before, the high skilled players in Quake are very concentrated in Europe and the exposure you can get by motivating them to go pro is by far way less than what you would get in Asia. So there's an immident conflict of interest, get the best competition by focusing into a small portion, or more attention but less competition by expanding. So please dont say both of them are your #1 priority

There are not more than four Premier Leaugue teams allowed to compete in the Champions League either. If they only allowed the top English, Spanish and Italian teams into the CL, they wouldn't be doing a football a favour either. It's the same case here.

I also seriously don't see how you can put Finland in the Intel Extreme Masters Asian Championship case. Calipt got a 7th place in the European Championship out of pretty much nowhere. You guys are in exactly the same situation as calipt.

You're obviously missing my point, with Finland being located where it is, and grouped with Sweden where the level of top duellers is higher every finnish player who goes into the qualifiers has to go past the swedish pros to qualify to the local finals. I mean, if i had gone for a holiday in Taipei I would have had a decent chance at getting 3rd, if lucky maybe even 2nd, while I'm not even close to it in Finland and much less Scandinavia.

The tournament format gives exposure to players that do not deserve it in a sense, while there are 100's of players who dont get any attention and much less possible sponsorship deals. The problem with this and progaming is that to climb the plateau from high lvl to pro lvl requires so much effort and with no one giving you any motivation besides your own desire, you most often see people just fading into inactivity or not trying to push themselves anymore while at the same time they see some total newb like utaro getting money and playing in a LAN

I did read your posts and they are nonsense honestly.

As others have stated, Finnish players have all the possibilities to compete with the the pros in Europe. Remind me, who of them achieved anything?

And if instead of instantly replying with a long text you should have taken the time to actually think about what mine implies.

Quake has never been really big in Asia, except for maybe Australia.

With this tournament You not only give Australia some possibility to comptete, but also have the chance to promote Quake to billions of potential players.

Another Quake tournament in Finland isn't going to change much on the other hand. Maybe get 5 more people off their ass, who can't do it for the $100 weekly online cups.

Again, if Finish don't manage to get anywhere in Europe's competitive scene it's their own damn fault. Asians, on the other hand only have this one.

Also: Please, link me to that Finnish player who can beat jibo consistently, or did better than Python or Rocketboy in big tournaments. Thanks.

I never claimed there are finnish players who could beat jibo, but there sure as hell are lots of those who could beat everyone else in the tourney. you're still missing the point though, we can play against them np but to qualify or get anything out of it you need to beat the very best in Europe basicly.

I already said it's totally understandable why they are doing this, it's better promotion but better promotion doesnt necessarily mean the tournament had the highest possible level it could have had.

If you havent noticed, it's not only Finland either. The top spots in the cups are always taken by the same people and if the whole point of this is to not nurture those few pro's but to get new names out there, you need to get high level players move up to pro level. The way it is now means to get anywhere in a scandinavian qualifier you need to put in a fuckton of effort, while to get paid and to play in a LAN in Asia you just need to show up, ie. they get outside motivation without putting in as much effort

edit: and just to clarify, I've got no problem with Asians having their own LAN, but the way IEM is setup now, with swe duellers > fin duellers > asian duellers, with enough noticeable skill/experience gap to be totally predictable, finnish players get the short end of the stick here. Same could be said for danish and norweigan players too. If asian players had to qualify against swedish players, none of them woud qualify either.

if you organized a LAN cup in any scandinavian country where the 1st prize would be a case of beer, you'd see a ton of activity in that country. Now, with everyone in Scandinavia needing to qualify with swedish players, most of the guys I've talked with are "meh, cba, I tried a couple of times and had to play fazz and madix second round in the qualifier"

Maybe the idea is to improve the tournaments in the long run. Which is where your arguments are failing.

If you havent noticed, it's not only Finland either.

This one actually help my point. If the ESL followed your logic, they'd have to hold LAN tournaments in every European country. Money that they simply don't have (so whihch country shall it be?). It makes ten times more sense, to hold a single one that adresses tons more people.

You are also missing on big point. It is not like, Finland has just been a part of the European online scene. If there was a player with enough motivation and talent to hold his own against the top of Europe, he had more than enough chances to show it. They didn't. Others who had the same chances did.

On the other hand, it took fat to go to China to make Rocketboy known. Noone, can say how many uncut diamonds there are in Asia, who could maybe take the game to the next level. That won't happen if you get a random Finn to make a steady 9th - 16th.

To summarize:

A tournament in Asia opens tons of opportunities in promotion and maybe finding unknown players.
A tournament in Finland only offers the chance to get some unmotivated gamers of their ass, who have already had several chances to do so and didn't use them. It will also lead to complaints from all other European countries, why they didn't get a LAN, when even a country with a mere 5 Mio. inhabitants gets one.

So the conclusion is:
The only thing were Finland might have been better is the average quality of the participants (I would still have had my money on jibo winning that tournament). And Carmac and Rondrian have stated that that was never a goal.
For everything else, promotion, long term gain and practicability Asia is the blatantly obvious choice.

P.S: I also very much doubt that you would beat uNleashed, considering some Americans said he was quite good, and he managed to score several frags against jibo.

Because there has been oh so many new scandinavian players entering the pro circuit? yeah right. there's been some discussion earlier how repetitive QL competition has already become, every week you see the excact same players in the cups fighting for the top spots, IEM euro finals was basicly zotac cup with ESL shoutcasters. The gap to go from a good player to someone who even gets 1$ out of it is much bigger in Europe than in Asia, its just a fact and I'm not sure why you are even arguing it. As of now utaro has earned more money with QL than any non-swedish scandinavian player.

Scandinavia is filled with high level players who have been playing for years without getting anything besides enjoyment, the question is, how do you motivate them to go pro?

edit: and I personally believe that neither the finnish or the asian players deserve to be in the world finals, because neither of them are good enough.

In short:

linkoo and xrebzy both played in the IEM EU Championship and afair won money during the online groupstage. And they aren't Swedish.
They also didn't have to pay for a flight like Utaro did.

So, if two players from a tiny country can mange to win something (hi linkoo, no offense ;) ), it should be not be a problem for all those Finnish players, if they have any motivation at all.

what im trying to do here is give internet heroes a break, those that are not quite good enough to make it to LAN finals or tournaments, but are wayyyy better than the asian guys who did.

Because quite frankly none of the asian guys besides jibo perhaps wont be expanding the pro scene for quite a while. Hopefully IEM Asia strats a more active scene there but its a fact that if you start to build a scene from scratch, it takes a while for anyone to be able to challenge eu/usa top players.

But that fact of the matter is: They DO get the opportunity. And that is what I have been saying a along.

Xrebzy won $250 (and I think would have gotten another $150 for showing up??).
He won that money without having to pay for a flight for Taipeh, which I'd bet was more expensive than the prize money for 3rd or 4th.

Again: Support for European gamers is there, it's far far better than anywhere else. You have no point complaining if other continents get a small piece of the cake.

Of course Asians deserve to get QL support too, but not at this scale in this moment of time. The rewards given here are at no way in balance with the level of play and effort put in by asians compared to the euro players, the prize money was even halved and its still too much in my opinion. A series of smaller cups, separate qualification cups to the finals were definately needed and im quite sure if players like python knew they'd get 1=1 return or more for the cash involved they would sure have showed up. I'm not really familiar with the costs of flying from Japan to Taiwan but a 3 hour flight in Europe isnt that expensive. Even from this thread you can read australians for example wanted their own cup

Besides that it's interesting to see, that you have now started to haggle about amounts. Amounts, mind you, that are giving away to gamers.

Maybe 4000$ would have been a "more fitting prize pool", maybe not. It does not have anything to do with our previous discussion whether holding this LAN is a good choice. You need to realize, that those $8000 are hardly the entire expenses. The flights and accomedation for the staff had to be paid as well, for example.

And I honestly think another $4000 thrown into the European scene who already get the biggest share by far for some online tournaments (please substract costs for organisation if it's a LAN) just to help random lower tier players, wouldn't have gotten anyone of their ass that would then proceed to have an influence on the pro scene.
Zotac and G-DAta already throw in $5200 per year, each, let alone the EU Championship that bassically offered a small payout even down to Top 24.

So, if anyone who has the talent to actually beat the top players needs a $4000 tournament as motivation, he already has it.

However, if you really want national tournaments, top eliminate the number of articipating top players (as the ESL is already doing for Germany!), then you'd need way more than those measly $4000.

tl;dr:

If it's only about the money, I think the ESL will be happy to host a Pro Series in Finland or any country you choose, as long as you or anyone actually secures sponsors for it.

Until then Sponsors will rather see a big Asian tournament, than a small national one.

effort is measured in time, not success.

The problem of the Asian scene is that Quake is hardly known and the scenes are isolated. How do you propose to change that if not by promotion through a LAN?

And certainly noone "deserves" this money anyway.
Why exactly would you want to fund someone who can't make an effort to get off his ass to win money online if he just makes Top 16?

Yes excactly and the reasons for this are totally selfish from the company perspective, they are looking to make money, and that is excactly why I said he should drop the holier than thou attitude about giving everyone the chance to compete and such, when the truth is they just want the company and the business they are in to get more attention. It's just as selfish as "pro" players are who might want to eventually make a living off their sport. Because somebody has to pay for that.

So if you don't want to allow the established financing pathways into the game, like they are well established in other sports like soccer, football and tennis, you either successfully finance the sports by voluntary contributions - good luck with that - or live with the sport never growing beyond kiddie player communities who compete for nothing on shitty equipment in shitty lans.

And if that's the prospect you have to offer, my guess is that about any of your beloved finnish players will rather go with the ESL and similar than with you. Because the latter would appear to have a more realistic idea about how to get the money the players themselves eventually would want to cash in.

Man. Just consider that marketing. Carmac is the poor dude who, besides other things, is trying to sell the shit, also in our interest. Because we too want to see the communities grow and prosper, and see tens, hundreds and thousands of thousands of bucks handed over in quake grand finals to winners with broad smiles on their glowing faces.

So why not just show a little patience and excuse him for, likely involuntarily, mixing some slight marketing lingo into what else he has to say. Just read it the good way.

Well, what I learned is that a little over a year ago quake was as good as dead. And it's due to joint efforts of ID Software and particularly the ESL, including that very Carmac whom you require to speak some language you like, that things are picking up steam right now again.

Considering that, I see no problem in allowing them some freedom in devising what is in fact their business right now, including the ways they want to market, advertise and sell it. Also remember that anybody thinking he can do better than them is always free to set up some competition. If you do, I'm certainly looking forward to that.

On the two World Championship slots:

1) Without prior facts (scores) we have the obligation to give Asia (+ Australia) the benefit of the doubt. The region has produced high skilled players in Quake 3 - RocketBoy, PowerK, Python. Of course it's very likely that the current players are much weaker, but we cannot take that for granted.

2) It is beneficial for the Asian FPS gamers to have a competition like this and for them to compete with the very best. Both economically and skill-wise. If you follow football, UEFA is actually trying to lower the number of teams from super strong countries in the Champions League so the little ones can become stronger.

3) ESL does not directly (in the short run) benefit from having a weaker competition at the Intel Extreme Masters World Championship. The Asian media will still follow it because of very strong World of Warcraft representation (the top 2 last year were Korean teams) and Counter-Strike. This is _really_ not about marketing.

4) ESL is in the business of running esports tournaments. What is good for esports is good for us. Sure, we need to make money, but we will not make money if we do not nurture the esports ecosystem (PainKiller + CPL).

It is beneficial for esports and the Intel Extreme Masters to have a stronger scene in the Asia + Australia region. I am sure that after a successfully run Asian Championship, next year we will have more good players coming (from Australia, for instance) and the ones that played this year will be stronger.

Perhaps someone like uNleashed will get a better shot at getting sponsored thanks to this and coming to more events in Europe. And with a player like him the competitions will be more interesting for sure, especially if he pulls off an upset once or twice.

It really is that simple.

5) If I really cared only to make money, I wouldn't be arguing with you on this site.

I agree that there needs to be an Asian championship, but the stupid part was to fill it by inviting semi-random people. I can't believe there isn't anyone available in Asia who would be more worthy for utal1ty's slot, for example. Asian championship should have been similar to European and American, where several known players were invited and the others battled for their slots in online qualifiers. You could've made separate Asian/Australian/South African qualifying tournaments, or something like that, it's not hard to organize some online tourneys to select the best players.
I generally agree about your ideas, but the particular implementation of current Asian QL championship isn't really faithful to them. It looks like the goal was to quickly find any players to fill the open slots, not to provide competition and chance for growth for Asian QL scene.

Eh, that's the problem, that ESL didn't make any qualification competitions, but just invited some players directly to the "finals".
So all the things you say like "giving Asians chance to improve", "find reasons for their sponsors", "beneficial for the Asian FPS gamers to have a competition like this" etc, are irrelevant.
You didn't give anyone chance to improve, you just selected manually some players. What if there is some "Jpooller" who can actually pretend on top2, but you didn't choose him to participate in finals because you never gave him a competition to show himself in? The fact that you manually selected players also voids all reasons for sponsors to support them because it's not their achievement that you (or whoever else) picked a name you like based on god knows what. By this hand-picking instead of proper qualifications you basically deprived players of possibility to demonstrate their results.
I don't know how it is beneficial for Asian FPS gamers. Imagine that you are that "Jpooller", and you see the Asian championship announcement on ESL and think like "oh yeah, now I will enter and show them my skill!", and then weeks pass and you see no news, and then suddenly you see that it's already "LAN finals" and that some "utal1ty" is gonna participate instead of you, and you haven't been given ANY chance at all. Will you then feel that ESL is really doing anything good to Asian players?

srsly, there was NOTHING to sign up to as far as I can tell.
1-2 players per country? Not believable. Your own ESL Japan cup had 32 players, for example. Or remember that 2v2 cup which had a lot of teams and 1000+ stream viewers (and btw, prozac&fenda did not win there, and weren't even able to get to finals which means there ARE some good players in Asia which could provide some competition at least for 3-rd/4-th place).
If you think I don't understand or don't know something or make wrong assumptions, then please explain where exactly I'm wrong. I am not inclined to bash ESL (or anything else) without any reasons, but right now you haven't disclosed any reasons for not to bash it.
Anyway, I hope you'll be able to make next season much better.

i don't think one tournament is enough to get a sponsorship deal, especially one with players of considerably lower skill. sadly, there may not be another quake tournament in Asia for a long time to come.

nitron, the player from malaysia is actually a competitive CS player in a sponsored clan. he's been playing QL for only a month now. good thing his team is supportive of his decision to pursue Quake Live. i think he's quite good for his very limited experience in any form of Quake.

i really wanted to attend but it simply wasn't feasible to spend $1000+ on flights and accommodation when the best i could probably do is $300 for 4th place :)

Its's a good thing trying to make QL popular in Asia. Without a doubt there can be a huge asian player just judging by the number of asians and their e-sports fanatism (sc anyone).

Only thing i don't like is 12 player world final. But you made your decision so there is nothing we can do about it. I'd still suggest more euros. You said allways nursing the same 8 players. Well if they are the best, that's what you do (again sc superstars in korea). In every sport the best players/teams play. So why not in Quake. Could easily be 12 Euros.

On alternative stream I get "Unable to connect. Please verify that your firewalll set to allow octoshit blah etc." I checked that and octoshit is allowed so wtf.

On ESL free stream I get "An error occured noresponse(33), nostream(33)"

So wtf do I do? Anyone know how to fix this?

So yeah I finally got a chance to watch some of this tourney.

Unleashed has some potential thats for sure but it was clear Jibo's experience alone was enough to best him. Sadly I don't see how he can get the needed practice necessary to beat someone like Jibo in the future if he keeps practicing in Japan. Not impossible but close to atleast.

It's not ESL's fault really, and the groups aren't that bad. It's just the way the qualifiers went. Group A has 2nd and 3rd from EU and US but Group B has 1st and 4th from EU and US. Then Group A has Stermy and Group B has Fox. Jibo is really the only difference between the groups. You're probably overrating Cooller and Rapha because of their "fame" and underrating Dahang and Cypher (who based on the qualifiers are better) and that's why the groups may look bad to you.

I don't think anyone considers the Cooller/Rapha/Cypher/Dahang placements to be poor. It's the others that screw with the balance.

That being said, having watched a few games from the Asian championships, it doesn't really matter where they get placed. Their form was terrible - yes, even Jibo's.

imho: I know the Asian Championships weren't the best and highskilled QL finals during the season, but I think they were pretty important for Asia. There was a lot of press here and interested in Quake Live, also a lot of people stopped by and followed the action on the lcd screens or sat down and even followed one/two matches completely. Of course it was sad that a lot of top players from this part of the world couldn't attend for several reasons, but I'm not sure if it would have changed the top 2, maybe, but Jibo at least proved again that he is the best Asian Quake player around.

Hopefully next season we will come back and the scene will have developed and improved a lot and we can see progress! :)

Sorry for the sometimes late updates on the news, was kinda busy with admining ;-)

It couldve even been nicer if many of the other skilled players had shown up. probably wouldnt have made a difference to the final result, but atleast wouldve seen more close matches. Players i've missed are:

blackbear, sup, arqnugget, janus, burial, serval, 9sky, rocketboy but i know work and visa's made it difficult for them :(

I'm not involved in any location findings, but as anybody can guess there are a lot of factors involved, like venue prizes, sponsorship deals and markets, time/date issues, because we have an event nearly every weekend and some times two or three a weekends in different countries it all needs adjusted to ressources etc. It's a very complex thing to figure out and out partners also have a word in it.

Tbh I think Taipeh wasn't too bad, the greater problem was that the announcement was rather short (<2 month) and that with Jibo and proZaC two players showed up who scared others away.

How close-minded. If anything, Quake needs MORE events in Asia to bring it to the attention of the public. How big is gaming in Asia, even just in Korea alone? 10x more than it is in Europe and America, just in different games. If Quake were to become a major game in those countries can you imagine how much practice, dedication and sponsorships the players would get? Ship some pros over to Asia IMO, hook them up with a gaming house and let them preach the word of Quake around Asia :D
