The ESWC tournament had one question written all over it: would the famous PPP routine prevail over the developed European style of play? Fatal1ty came to France with his training partner, with a manager and who knows who else. They bought computers in France, got a hotel different to the one where all the players were and practised. The European opposition with Vo0, SteLam and stermy was waiting with a throng of more or less unknown players. Who would be dealing the cards? We soon found out.

Man of the Tournament: Netherlands Vo0

The Dutchman was under a lot of pressure as Europe’s highest hope to win. After all, he’d won the first online PK tournament and was in the semi final of another one. Here in France many people worried that he would choke due to his lack of experience. That did not happen. Vo0 won his fist major LAN and took home $5,000. Good job.

Surprise of the Tournament: Germany dr.m0ersr

A guy comes out of nowhere and produces a triple upset. First of all, he beats the #1 favourite Fatal1ty and to prove it was not a fluke, does it the second time in a match for third place. Finishing above the well known American and SteLam was quite a feat.

Worst Luck of the Tournamnet: Germany SteLam

The kid comes to Poitiers and shows some excellent PK play. All players were impressed by the young German, saying that on one of the maps (up to this day I don’t know which, though ;) he was unbeatable. In the end, Stephan was knocked out of the tournament by Fatal1ty in the last group game. The map count decided that he was knocked out. Had he taken one map from the American machine or had he not lost one map in his previous game, he would have progressed.

Highlight of the Tournament: Italy stermy’s performance

The little coy kid from Italy said to me before the event: “I just want to beat Fatal1ty.” And he did. His semi final game will probably stay as the most memorable of his games so far. Stermy was not good enough to take down Vo0, but a second place finish is more than people expected of him anyway.
