As far as playerbase/longevity goes, which would you recommend for a total newbie and why?

Thanks.

Why do you like quake? (104 comments)
Posted by Earthsea @ 15:59 CST, 3 January 2013 - iMsg
I personally love it because of the skill ceiling and the rewarding sense of accomplishment it brings when I feel like I have made progress on my way to becoming a sub-retard player. (Actually though, I'm probably one of the most pathetic people that reads and posts here concerning arena FPS).

Why do you personally love Quake and continue to play it in this day and age?

will qlranks ever be incorporated in QL? (29 comments)
Posted by Earthsea @ 05:53 CST, 8 December 2012 - iMsg
Do you think we will ever see id bring the QLRanks website onto the QL official website, in all of its stat-tracking glory?

Not a terrible idea, in my opinion -- but then again I'm an idiot, so I want more opinions.

worst mouse you have ever purchased? (142 comments)

I see a lot of threads about the best mice and recommendations, now let's hear about your worst mice experiences.

I haven't been in the game very long, so I can't really say I have had many... started out with a Logitech M510 that I found on sale at BestBuy, followed by a Logitech G400 and a Razer Deathadder (bought on a whim while it was on sale as a backup in case the G400 decides to crap out).

why isn't QL on steam in some way? (24 comments)

I feel like Steam would be a great way to help increase QL's player base.

Has id tried this already? Or have they not pursued the idea at all?

choosing between two "mice" (45 comments)
Posted by Earthsea @ 03:00 CST, 15 November 2012 - iMsg
Friend said he was interested in picking up either a Razer Taipan or a Steelseries Sensei [RAW]. He's interested in those two, and asked me for advice on which of those two to get, because he's set on one or the other.

o_O

Which would you recommend, if these were the only two gaming mice in the world?

how long do you see quake lasting? (55 comments)

How much longer do you think Quake will exist in some way, shape, or form? I'm assuming Quake Live, but I guess any Quake game will do.

5 years? 10 years? 15? 20? More?

Interested in getting some opinions from veteran Quake players on this (I have often heard of Quake being described as the "chess of video games" so to speak).

What do you think of chess?

So, Quake 2 (64 comments)
Posted by Earthsea @ 19:39 CDT, 15 August 2012 - iMsg
I see QW, CPMA, and QL mentioned quite a bit in the realm of Quake and arena shooters in general. The one game I don't see mentioned too often is Quake 2.

Am I just missing all of the Quake 2 chatter that goes on? Or was there something, or things, about that game that weren't terribly appealing and led to its lack of popularity comparatively speaking?

Sauerbraten (35 comments)
Posted by Earthsea @ 15:34 CDT, 7 August 2012 - iMsg
A fun, small little game that I found:

http://sauerbraten.org/

I'm having a lot of fun in it, anyway. iCTF is the most-played mode by far, so if you're a fan of iCTF or would simply like a fun, simple (compared to Quake, at least) game, I'd say give it a go. 100% free, nothing to lose. :)

Not to mention ping has hardly any affect on the game whatsoever -- you often see people from all over the world fragging merrily in one server. ;)

Community isn't terribly large, but I never have trouble finding a populated server, or a handful of populated servers. Wonderful little community to boot.

If you are actually leaving QL, will you be playing arena shooter(s) still? If so, which one(s)?

Warsow?

Xonotic?

Quake 3?

Some iteration of Unreal Tournament?

Waiting on 2GD's Reborn?

Doom?

Dropping the genre entirely?

I was kicked from a T4 game for not really... doing very well. "Shoot something you dumbfuck!" et cetera.

To be fair, I was absolutely exhausted and my performance wasn't even within the realm of poor, and I'm listed as a T3 player.

Was it a bad idea to friend the guy who kicked me, hoping he'll add me so I can apologize for my poor performance and negatively affecting the game?

To open this thread for more discussion outside of this relatively mundane question, have you ever been kicked from a match? If so, for what?

How do I get into QWTF? (4 comments)
Posted by Earthsea @ 23:21 CDT, 13 July 2012 - iMsg
Looking to see if there are still any QWTF players out there.

Someone was talking about it in Fortress Forever, and it piqued my interest. I forgot to add him on Steam though. :/

Where should I head for any remaining community/the proper files for playing? Pretty sure he said something about ZelTF.

I see lots of threads about advice for the total newbie, but I haven't seen too many on advice for intermediate players, and/or players who at least vaguely know what they're doing and what, just WHAT, they have gotten themselves into. :D

What piece or pieces of advice would you give to an intermediate player?

Need a good, affordable headset (9 comments)
Posted by Earthsea @ 14:22 CDT, 9 June 2012 - iMsg
I'm in the market for some affordable (<$50/$60), comfortable, hypersensitive headphones, so my teammates can hear me with ease even when I'm whispering into the mic.

I prefer on-ear headphones rather than over-the-ear (these can cause some of us to sweat profusely, which I have experienced numerous times over the years).

Any suggestions?

Asus question! (No comments)
Posted by Earthsea @ 13:43 CDT, 24 May 2012 - iMsg
I am interested in buying the 15" notebook with the third gen Intel chips for use as a general laptop for college work + gaming system (i.e., the G55VW series).

I see on the ASUS web site the G55VW-DS71, but on Amazon, Fry's and elsewhere I see different suffixes, for example, G55VW-ES71, -RS71, -AS71, -NS.

What do the different suffixes AS71, RS71, DS71, ES71, NS specify?

What do you consider "dead" for a game? (4 comments)
Posted by Earthsea @ 17:33 CDT, 13 May 2012 - iMsg
I see so many people on here ranting about how Quake is dead, no hope, no one is playing, etc. when it seems perfectly alive to me, even in NA.

I mean, I see about 15-20 populated servers, a lot of the time even more, is that not enough? And apparently it is way more popular in EU.

Is it due to the lack of tournament support and a lack of a constant new stream of players over time?

What gives?

Need a huge mouse (54 comments)

I have absolutely *HUGE* hands. The Logitech G400 is causing me cramps because my hand is too big. :(

I'm planning on switching to a palm grip for comfort, rather than a claw grip.

Are there any mice out there that are both good for Quake and people with giant hands like me?

Thanks in advance!

*EDIT* Currently looking at the Microsoft Sidewinder Gaming Mouse and the R.A.T. 7.

Looking to get into Doom multiplayer (11 comments)
Posted by Earthsea @ 22:28 CST, 7 March 2012 - iMsg
So, keeping it simple.

I'm looking to get into Doom multiplayer. I played it... a couple of times about a year ago, it was great fun. REALLY fun.

1. Should I use Skulltag or Zdaemon?
2. Do I need to buy one (or more) of the Doom games off of Steam for the necessary files? If so, which one(s)?
3. Is the multiplayer relatively active at all these days? Or did I completely miss the boat? :(

Thanks in advance.

Fortress Forever, a superb game! (58 comments)
Posted by Earthsea @ 15:51 CST, 25 February 2012 - iMsg
Hello ESR! New poster, but I’ve been playing Quake for a while.

In any case, I would like to humbly inform you of a fantastic, free Source mod: Fortress Forever.

Fortress Forever is, in essence, a modern rendition of Team Fortress Classic that “is supposed to be about bringing Team Fortress to modern times, evolved into something more fun and appealing without losing its soul.”

Originally a Quake mod by Robin Walker, John Cook, and Ian Coughley, Team Fortress combined the strategic class, team-based elements in 1996 that we see in Fortress games today with fast pace of Quake to make a dynamic and engaging experience for all involved. It became widely popular mod that was played by the thousands.

The next iteration of Team Fortress came about as a mod for Half-Life in the form of Team Fortress Classic, which became wildly popular and successful.

Team Fortress “revolves around a number of teams competing in a variety of game modes with players selecting one of nine classes to play as… The way a player acts in a game is mostly defined by which class they select, and as such, Team Fortress Classic relies heavily on teamwork between players of different classes.”

Fortress Forever was released on September 13, 2007 as a free Source mod that was heavily inspired by Team Fortress Classic, but was nonetheless built from the ground up. The idea of Fortress Forever is to provide new players with an engaging, endlessly compelling game to get engrossed in while at the same time providing Team Fortress Classic players with a pleasing, more modern alternative to their beloved, timeless game.

The gameplay is fast-paced, dynamic, engaging, and very difficult to master, similar to the beloved Quake physics. The nine classes that have been ingrained in the game for so long are all dutifully represented in style in the Source engine. The developers are active and engaged with the community, which is comprised of quite a few passionate, dedicated, and helpful individuals. It is an enjoyable, adrenaline-pumping, fantastic team-based game that is sure to please both TFC and Quake players with its superb, fast physics and its awesome gameplay.

There is a relatively active pickup community, which can be found at #ff.pickup on QuakeNet, and spectating them is always encouraged for new players and old. Participation, after some time spent in-game, is encouraged even more. Although the community is still small in comparison to a number of other shooters out there today, our community is slowly growing in size, and we’re starting to reach out to the gaming world at large to help expand, as well as reaching out to various leagues and event organizers.

So why not swing by www.fortress-forever.com and check it out? If you have any fond memories of Team Fortress, TFC, or are simply interested in trying out a new game that will hopefully appeal to you as a Quake player, I can’t recommend Fortress Forever enough. :)
