It's a default I suppose so the bank that loaned the money just doesn't get it back. That's why banks charge different interest rates based on the risk of default. Mortgages tend to be lower interest rates than unsecured loans because if you can't pay they get the money back by selling your house.

But looking at the dictionary it seems to me still that empathy is the ability to simulate what others are feeling, it has nothing to do with whether you have compassion with them or not although you may argue that it humanly follows by virtue of our nature.

The point of empathy (and mirror neurons) is to be able to simulate the experiences of another person. This has no exclusive reason as I see it; It can be used to exploit that person, learn from that person or show compassion towards that person.

Ok, here is how i see the difference:

they both have páth(os) suffering, sensation, right; so it's between "sym-" which is, "with" or "together" and "em-" which is empátheia ->affection (affectus acted upon, subjected to; mental or emotional state)

sympathy is more in conjunction with the sensation, whereas empathy is more where you sort of project it onto yourself without saying anything of whether you are in harmony with the other person in a particular feeling.. say you are a masochist and like pain. then you could have empathy with someone in pain and enjoy it, but that would not be sympathy, because you'd have to "feel in agreement with" the person for it to be sympathy.. empathy is more "intellectual"..

of course, things get very subjective when one tries to define words as precise as this, and i know they in common usage are synonyms.

but in common usage agnostic serves as a middle-way between atheism and theism, and i don't agree with that either - so it's academic on a personal level xD

I didn't mean to be rude. I just didn't see it as having anything to do with simulating. When I read 'simulating' I immediately thought of 'immitating', but sure, it can also mean 'pretending'. You could argue that you have to pretend to BE the person in order to empathize with that person (that's basically what I said myself when I wrote "put yourself in someone else's shoes"). But it's not really about imitating or pretending. It's more about UNDERSTANDING. As I also specified.

So saying it's "the abillity to simulate and understand..." is not really wrong, but that's not what you said. You said empathy was "the abillity to simulate the experiences of another person". While you might need empathy in order to do that, that's not what empathy IS.

Actors simulate the experiences of others when they act. They often use empathy to understand their "roles" in order to simulate them correctly. But you don't have to act / simulate in order to empathize. You know?

Of course, one could then argue that we simulate subconconsciously every time we empathize, but since it's possible to simulate the experiences of another person without really identifying with or understanding that person (empathizing), I don't think they are entirely the same thing.

Putting yourself in another's shoes takes cognition, not just mirror neurons. If we're talking about cognition then we're talking about an awful lot of the brain. There isn't much info on the brain anyway; all they do is scan brain activity and point to the bits that light up. Watching a bunch of electrons flow doesn't reveal much.

You can't compare that to a kid comitting suicide over poker debts. It's a horrible story, but only for everyone around him (that includes e-people as well as irl, I agree). But it's obvious that he had more problems then just debts, comitting suicide is a rediculous solution, after months living in lies. No way it had to come this far, that was his choice (as was the fact he kept it secret from everyone) and he severely influenced/touched alot of people around him with it. I think it's not a brave act, and I can't imagine how something this minor (the debts) could ever go this far. I'm shocked because of it, but it has nothing to do with empathy.

Actually I kinda agree. To be or not to be from shakespeare actually talks about this matter and is a sentence used to reflect Hamlet's idea on suicide and whether actually taking his life would be the easy way out or not. You can call it what it is but suicide is often a cowardly way out of your problems, often dumping them onto your relatives and family.

Although the loss of a life is always harsh I'm feeling even more sympathy towards the family left behind.

A few years ago I experienced all my peers jump on the mainstream poker bandwagon one by one because suddenly poker was "in" and "cool". That's when I thought to myself... "fucking sheep...". Mainstream media has been glorifying poker (gambling, ahem) for so long now and all the sheep are eating it raw.

thats besides the point though, skill is skill, poker is a different kind of skill, comparing it to chess is silly.

a chess player wouldn't be able to just take up poker and suddenly become a top player, the same way a top poker player defintely would not become tops at chess.

as a poker player and having been through real bad swings too (believe me on that one) I can understand a bit the feelings he was having due to big losses (although I've never lost any of my "own" money).

It creates a huge lot of sadness and u appreciate little or nothing.

it's good u have a good detachement towards money, but at some point when poker becomes more than a hobby the competitive aspect gets very important and if you are not caring for the money itself you are caring about the numbers (your bankroll, winrate etc) and you can hardly play completely fearlessly.

Playing with debts must bring a lot of fear while he was playing and that is exactly not the feeling u want to have when sitting at a poker table...so he was already in a vicious circle which is hard to get out from :/

clever, smart, successful, important people generally DO NOT play poker as a way to live. (though I accept some people play it for other reasons that's personal to them and ofc there are always acceptable circumstances).

They do not play poker becasue they are clever enough to....

Even someone who sells a copy of big issue.

You don't inspire anyone apart from wide eye teens who want to make a quick buck without doing anything else.

You just sit in your little room stealing pot's off inferior players like Christian and contribute to the bad feeling's that no doubt pushed people Christian over the edge.
Oh and then imply such people are lacking the fundamental thing's in life. Not forgetting of course he probably got into poker from members like you in the gaming community in the first place.

I think it's cool you can get by by sitting on your ass and playing poker, but at the same time your whole life is one big poker game.

Why do you think some people continue to work even though they don't need to?

It's becasue working is actually important and if a job sucks get off your ass and get a better one.

So if people like you want to play poker for a living then fine, but seriously stick to your underground IRC's rooms or at least if you're going to talk in the open then stick to the mainstream definitions of "clever" and "life" becasue those are not two words that go hand in hand with poker apart from a few disillusioned people in the gaming world.

The vast majority of poker players are amateurs and actually enjoy playing, even if they lose $50 for the night.

You say that all that matters is the contribution to society.
I'm going to mention just one very easy stereotype (there are many available) : cigaret manufacurers.

Dont they have experts, scientists, so a lot of very clever persons who all have the same goal : make a lot of money by selling a lot of cigarets that are going to kill a lot of people.
It's ALL about the money, at ALL cost.

Poker players have hardly killed anyone or at least definitly not at the same scale and not as directly as cigarets, guns,...

And thinking that this kid killed himself just because of 13.000 euros that other players took from him is being naive...he must have been sad and depressed because of other stuff too that we are not aware of.

So stop blaming us, the poker players, for his death...that's close to insultive, however I forgive you as you sound pretty much simple-minded.

On a final note :

Why do you think that there are professional high stakes poker players at the age of 75 ?

Because they still enjoy the game that happens to be their work even if they do not need the money.

I play a lot of poker and I wouldn't kill myself if I went into a 200k debt. Then again I've got what we call money management skills and don't see myself ending up with a debt.
First thing you need to learn is to not borrow money... but
it's dangerous to some because there's a thin line between being a degenerate gambler (as he was) and a solid poker player. when you become deluded nothing applies to you.

Still, if I lost all of my bankroll (somehow) I always think of backup plans and things I'd like to do. Like joining the french foreign legion, being a manwhore, professional mma or work in an office.

Some people will find a way to die, be it illicit drug use, alcoholism or gambling driven suicide and there's not much you can do because they'll hide it.

With all given facts in hand you'll think this guy was too weak to handle things, his debt wasn't exactly big. Survival of the fittest, but there could be many things beneath the surface that you don't know.

Weird how the term survival of the fittest has gone from being able to hunt animals with a spear to avoiding getting sucked into holes you can't get out of.

I feel sorry for his parents but I've got no sympathy for someone who fucks his family over in the worst way possible- So no, I'm not typing RIP. Someone who commits suicide won't rest in peace. That's the ultimate justification for committing suicide. I've been in some pretty shitty lows(severe depression) caused by a mix of negative influences but I always knew I owed it to my family to not "end it", and if I hung around things would eventually turn around. This is something I figured out easily and if you can't do it then you're lacking some basic fundamentals of life... how can anyone like that survive for a long life?

He didn't buy a car. He managed to secure a bank loan for a car buy even though he didn't have a driver's license. Obviously he didn't intend to buy a car for the money when he didn't have a driver's license...

the concept of poker (and any other form of gambling) is that someone wins money
and someone loses
luck is at least 3/4 cause of the results in this game
noone in his right mind can honestly want to play this game to make money. for fun and five dollars okay, but not serious.
this game is a sickness that has to be stopped. i think banning gambling would be the best choice

so sad that someone with only 21 years old ends his life in that way, all in life has a solution, but he was so young to know that, and to know that there are so many things left to do. Money never can be your decision to die. if you decide to die it's because nothing can make you happy and you have no love to life, but never for a problem, and never for money. I'm sad thinking that this 21 years and experience wasn't enough to see that.

I have to respect a man's decision to end his life when he decides to do it., It is the ultimate in taking control of your own destiny. Rather than sitting back and letting fate control it, you grab it by the horns and do it under your own control. The only thing sad to me is if he had failed at it. If he made a decision and carried it through and succeeded, I see only honor in that.

pretty creepy and rather insane.. more and more people start getting heavy into pokerplaying, and like a pyramid scheme, eventually the newbies providing others with money will disappear and the only players online will be "pros". that's when the big players start losing big, and that's probably what can drive a person into these things...

I'm in agreement that online gambling should be banned. There are many similar cases, all of which poker has taken over someone's life and caused them to end it due to not being able to handle it. There are no solid arguments for it.

Your argument's pretty flawed. It's a lot easier to ruin your life with online gambling than it is with gaming. Gaming evokes enjoyment and the majority of people game simply for fun. Gambling simply plays upon people's addictive nature.
