First group matches

Today the first Quake 4 matches where scheduled for 10:00 and we planned to get up around 08:30 to get ready for the event, unfortunately both Sizah and I weren’t able to wake up before 12:00 so we missed out some of the first group matches.

The venue setup looks really impressive with in the center a main stage, which I’ve only seen used for Counter Strike matches so far. I’m not sure if the main stage will also be used for the finals of other tournament, but besides the main stage there are three smaller stages used for the other tournaments. In the center of the arena there are four white screens hanging on the ceiling so that the stage matches can be viewed from all sides of the gaming arena.

Although the whole setup looks impressive I personally preferred the setup from previous ESWC editions where the different tournament areas where more seperated. First of all there is no game sound and when I was watching the Cooller vs. Hunter game on stage there was also a match played on another stage for the Pro Evolution 5 tournament, so you’ll end up trying to follow the Quake match while there is French commentary on the back for the PES match which can be heard through speakers around the whole arena.

Last year’s ESWC I really enjoyed watching the Quake 3 matches at the ITG booth with commentary from DjWheat and Tosspot and I definitely wasn’t the only one who actually preferred watching the games at the ITG booth instead of watching it at the main stage. I think that everyone who ever followed any type of match shoutcasted by ITG knows what a great additional value it has to the experience and that when Wheat gets excited everybody gets excited.

I’m don’t want to spend to much lines on the lack of English commentary as I could probably write a whole column about it, but I think it’s a shame that an international tournament of this size does not includes English commentary. Obvious I do understand that there is a lot of spectators at the venue who might not understand English, but I really doubt those numbers would top the amount of people who are taken away a great experience due the lack of commentary in English. I must say that I’m not aware of the online coverage GotFrag does and whether it includes English shoutcast or not, but the fact that there is only French commentary at the venue makes it more look like a national tournament then an international tournament, besides I doubt that there are more people here at the venue who understand French than English.

I think that on some points the event has taken a step back and it seems that there is more politics involved now, which influence not all can be found an improvement. Overall the event is still amazing though and I’m really happy that I can be here in Paris and experience this event, but I feel that the image of ESWC has of being the best or at least one of the best events around the world is in danger of slipping away a bit. If there would be a poll again here on ESReality about which is the best event around I wonder if ESWC will be voted as best event again as they did after the first ESWC event back in 2003.

After watching some exciting games at the venue we went to Redeye and Tosspot’s hotel to watch the soccer world cup match between Germany and Argentina in the hotel’s lobby, which was followed up by a poker game in their room including Redeye, Tosspot, Sujoy, Technics, Crow (not totally sure if I got his nickname right though) and me.

We finished up the poker game around 23:00 where Crow was the big winner and Tosspot earning himself some money as well. Again we had diner at 23:30, this time in a nice French restaurant just outside their hotel.

After diner and conversations Sujoy, Crow, Technics and I walked back to our hotel at Paris Bercy, where the others went to their room I had a beer in the park around the Palais Omnisport with Sizah and several other Dutch people and eventually went to sleep at 04:30.

Thursday, 29th June

Event registration and official opening ceremony at 18:00.

I woke up around 09:00 took a shower and played some games on my Xbox, which also has been to every ESWC event so far, and waited for Sizah to finally wake up from his hibernate. After Sizah got ready we went outside and tried to find us a decent breakfast, since not many restaurants still serve breakfast at 12:00 we ended up with a cheap sandwich from some kind of mini market, which in my case felt more like a sponge and in Sizah's case more like a stone.

After that we searched for the event entrance which took us a walk around the Palais Omnisport due the lack of signs leading to the actual location. It didn't take us long though and since we're registered in advance as press it wasn't that hard to pass the registration and receive our press passes, although they had some troubles finding Sizah's name on the list as he was listed by his first name instead of his surname.

From now all we could do the day was wondering around the event having a look at the exhibition booths and meet up with people, including Vo0 and Lauke which both came as spectators to the event. Today felt like I was in Paris for already a whole week, but then finally at 18:30 with a half hour delay the official opening ceremony began.

At the ceremony they showed us a movie compilation from the previous ESWC events and had a chat about all the sponsors and organization of the event. You might have seen a trailer from this movie, which was released some while ago. I must say the movie was really impressive, after the movie and chat it was finally time for the group drawings.

The ceremony also gave us a first glimpse of the really impressive gaming arena where all the tournaments will take place starting from tomorrow and after the ceremony there was the possibility to grab some snacks and drink at one of the upper areas of the venue.

After the snacks it was time for diner and we went to an Italian restaurant together with the Gamelux crew, Redeye, Cash, Zerter and Forever, at this time Tosspot was shoutcasting the Eurocup Enemy Territory semi-finals live from his hotel room in Paris.

Zerter and Forever left after diner for the players hotel as their tournament is starting early the next day and the rest went to another place and enjoyed ourselves a drink on the terrace.

I left terrace around 23:00 and headed back to the hotel room to write these journals and get some rest, about 2 hours later I'm sitting in the hotel lobby uploading these writings.

Wednesday, 28th June

Today I arrived at Paris around 17:00 after a four hour train ride from Amsterdam Central Station to Paris Gare du Nord

Having packed up all my stuff the night before there was really not much preparation left before I could hit the train to Paris, I’m traveling along with Sizah and our train left from Amsterdam at 12:56. The only thing I needed to make sure of today was that I made it on time for the train. As I live only a 15 minute subway ride away from the Central Station this shouldn’t be that hard, but I’m a natural in getting late, which my boss and friends would gladly confirm.

I woke up at 10:30 got a nice long shower, had some breakfast and headed to the subway station where I arrived just in time to wave the subway driver good bye while he was getting off the moment I walked up the station. From now it became a close call as the next subway would leave at 11:37 which left me with only 19 minutes to catch the Thalys to Paris Nord, since this would be the fourth time I’d visit the ESWC and I’ve traveled with the Thalys each time I know it will always leave right on schedule.

Acting cool on the phone with Sizah while he must have been getting sweaty as I had both of our train tickets, I was hoping the subway didn’t run into any delays, which it luckily didn’t. I arrived at the Central Station just in time and the moment I got on the Thalys and put my luggage away, the train left Central Station.

Now that mission was completed it was time to grab a beer at the Thalys bar, together with the Dutch Counter-Strike team Conzto we’ve spend about 3,5 hours of our four hours train ride at the bar enjoying our beers and having conversation.

Arrived at Gare du Nord we met up with Forever the Dutch Quake 4 player who was already in France for a booth camp with Winz, as the players left to the players hotel we continued our journey together with the crew of Gamelux to Gare de Lyon, which is almost next to the Palais Omnisport of Paris Bercy where the event is held. After having some small problems finding our hotel which is located only 100 meters from the event, we checked in our rooms and went out for a drink together with Tosspot and Redeye and had diner at 23:30 in a restaurant across the street.

We went back to the hotel around 01:00 where we ran into Sujoy and watch some movies from last years ESWC at Carmac’s room. After we watched the movies and the security guy came to the room to shut us up we went to our rooms and tried to catch some sleep, it still took me until 4:30 until I finally fell asleep in these not to comfortable beds.

Complete guide to uploading demos (No comments)
Posted by Black2lip @ 17:02 CDT, 2 October 2003 - iMsg
To upload demos you'll first have to navigate to the Contribute demo page. Go to the contribute page and select the option Demo. You should get a page with this form on it:

Demo contribution form

Ok before proceeding to the next steps make sure you ZIP the demo, a non-zipped demo will not be approved by the admins.

I assume most options are self explaining but here are a few things I want to point out:

Category
Select the type of game from the pulldown menu. If you select for instance 'Quake 3: Arena' then the 'Map' pulldown list only containst Quake 3 maps.

Event
If it's a demo from an event game like the ESo2 you can select the event here. If the event isn't listed in the pulldown list and it's a quite big event then you can ask an admin to add an event to the website.

Team 1 and Team 2
In the team 1 field enter the name of the first team/player and in the team 2 field the name of their/his opponent.

Viewpoint
Enter the pov of the demo here, this could either be a players name if the demo is following only one player but could also be for example 'followpowerup', 'followkiller' ,'GTV' or just 'multiple'.

Comment
You can enter some comments about the demo here for instance 'This is the half final game of the ESo 2 Q3 tournament'. DO NOT enter the results of the demo here since that would spoil the fun of watching the demo for others. You won't like it either if someone tells you the score of your favorite soccer team before you've seen the replay.

Post date & Thread date
Leave this value to 'default' there's no need to edit this.

Attachment
Click the 'Browse...' button to select the demo (.zip format) from your harddrive. The 'Demo' option should be allready selected from the File type pulldown.

Now you have entered all required information and you can submit the demo by clicking the 'Post' button. It can take a few minutes before the demo is uploading regarding your connection speed and demo size. After the uploading is done you will automatically be forwarded to the demo page.

If you don't have any admin status on the website your demo has to be approved first by an admin, meanwhile the demo file will be visible but cannot be downloaded yet. There are always some admins on the site so your demo should be approved within several minutes, during events this will be even faster most of the time.
