I had issues with google and youtube loading very slowly for couple of days 2 weeks ago, and it just stopped one day. But the tricky part was that on chrome it worked better than on my usual browser - FF. And i tried disabling and enabling the google's protocol SPDY, to no avail.

Install adblock and stop watching YouTube ads. If you've got ethical hangups about adblock then just only enable it on YouTube. Their ads break video sessions all the fucking time and it is so goddamned annoying.

Try using Chrome if you aren't already. All of this Google shit is so closely tied together these days that most of their services work about a hundred times better under Chrome.

Look near the bottom of the page for a link that says "Try something new". See if you're enrolled in any dumb trials that you have forgotten about. If you aren't, enroll in some dumb trials and see what happens. It might help. It might make it worse. It might do nothing at all to be honest, YouTube is just incredibly fucky.

If you search a bit for it, you can find some userscripts to run with greasemonkey or whatever that *might* disable the newer chunking protocols that many users have problems with. It's a crapshoot though - YouTube changes things nearly every day and they rarely share a lot of technical details about it. Frequently they say nothing at all and pretend nothing has changed, even when any monkey with a packet sniffer can obviously see that things have changed.

YouTube has been undergoing a ton of changes very rapidly over the last year. The new chunking protocols (TABSB and DASH) were/are buggy still and it's become very difficult to bypass them. I make my living with a company that sells mobile enterprise software for bandwidth optimization with a heavy focus on video traffic, and YouTube's constant buggy/untested changes are a nightmare for us. I'm pretty sure they are actively developing on the actual live environment half the time. And they don't tell their users at all when they change something. DASH and TABSB just kind of slowly started showing up on more and more sessions over time. Just today I spotted a fucking webm session too, so now that's probably going to roll out gradually until it's fucking us all over. Daily Motion does all the same shit YouTube does (restricting buffering and moving to chunked protocols instead of a plain stream). The reason it frequently works better is that they wait until the protocol is actually working well before they force it on all of their users. YouTube on the other hand uses their users as guinea pigs for this shit.

tl;dr - YouTube is fucking up hard these days, and there's probably very little you can do about it.

Thanks for the great tip about using Chrome. YouTube works MUCH better on it. I've got good bandwidth etc. and couldn't figure out what was causing this recent problem. I never would have suspected Google would do something like that to herd us into their corral.

For the last 2-3 weeks I got that thing where it loads the first few seconds only, then stops completely. Having to refresh a few times until it actually loads the whole video. Very annoying. But since 2 days ago or so it seems to work normally again, no idea what caused this
