I think ESR gives Q4 too much credit actually, considering how objectively bad the game was before it was made playable with mods (long after it was dead, might I add).

maybe the quake3 heads (me included) werent ready for a different game. the same happened to ut2k4 / ut3.

but as i remember we did try to fix q4 mp (esr people), gave hints and fixes to id. i said it before a few times, it was wrong from our side to want q4 like q3. this shoe we must wear.

Personally I think it is a shame that q4 died, I'd rather be playing it than QL tbh.

Or if they tried to evolve the game in other ways besides a graphic update. When you're playing Q3 and it has OSP, Promode, GTV, lots of grate maps, etc... staring all over with new glitches, a slower framerate and uncertainty the game will be around 2 years from then... sucks.

There's a lot more to evolving a game than graphics.

Crouchsliding was a big evolution for a quake game, tournament mode was very cool too.

That did seem pretty cool... by the time I go my hands on Q4, which wasn't that long after release, I couldn't find many active servers.

2-3 years servers were up.

q4 didnt looked like a quake title. the whole game felt and looked generic, steril, had no charme/character. the id tech 4 engine wasnt great for mp. in picmip/vertex emulation mode (4 commands) it looked very bad compared to q3. some maps werent tuned for high jumps which means a player hit often the celing (wrong proportions). only a few models were given to the player. crouch for me was a gimmick, not a revolutionary feature. i felt a shooting delay, some players denied that. the machine gun sound was fuba. the game had many more problems. i would have love to see some kind of hl2 ragdoll physics, just for the fun, so this steril feel vanished. dont forget the stupid mod war, battlemod vs q4max, clanbase had leagues with different mods. pro players said they dont even like the game, but attend in tournaments to have competition.

there was q4, later fixed and with mods. and q3 community driven with all the cool stuff that was community deved in 5-6 years. mods, cpma, tools, maps, gtv. q4 couldnt compete with that. but there was chance for q4, because players wanted something new.

some things in q4 were nice. buffed rail 90 (cpma idea), q3 rocket speed, shoots through teleporter, later tuned hitboxes (from battlemod), real hyperthread and dualcore support, LG not ping dependable anymore. q4max help with the overall performance. to the last breath there was a small ctf scene because the gamespeed was fast.

in short, the game didnt felt round. shooting and maps were no fun. i expected more from a q3 follower. it didnt die because of the out-of-the-box desaster from raven. if it were a true and innovative follower of quake3 at the core, players would crowded the game again after id patched and tuned it. mouth to mouth has a huge impact.

one thesis is, longtime inactive q3 players hopped in the game like a zoo visitor. but even if the game was better, they never intended to stay in the game anyway.

in germany (much quakeplayers) there was only a cut version sold with different pk4s. quake experts did know that and bought the uk import. german casuals or inactive players that didnt know that, couldnt join international servers with the low-violence client version. id said that a patch isnt doable... lost player potential. the solution was to install the international version but use the german cdkey. these cut-version buyers were totally pissed in the forums and said that they will not buy the game a second time.

so basiclly q4 was bad because it wasnt q3?

They made the mistake too cater to the HQ crowd instead of looking for a new playerbase the HQ people only ruin any possible potential to expand the franchise

Q4 was alright after 1.3. That was way too late though.
