just play CA and use lg as much as possible... it's not like in real combat scenario you are going to be on equal grounds as your opponent and begin firing at the same time... you're likely to just practice the same basic scenarios over and over again.

If you take the CA approach you will practice all kinds of angles and be more efficient.

idd ffa is much better for your quake skills, it improves all game mechanics that will be useful for competitive modes (except +backing thought).

What I'm getting at is he should just play standard CA.. 3v3, 4v4, 8v8, whatever, just get as much LG firing time in as possible, and he will always have an available server to do this, he won't need to add anyone to friends or depend on his LG partner being online. Just join a CA server, and spam the fuck out of your 150 LG cells every round. In FFA, you will be thwarted 50% of the times you try and get the LG, and when you do you will have an even harder time making it last more than 50 cells.

Personally, I recommend FFA over CA any day... but if it's just LG experience he's looking for, CA is the way to go.

3v3, 4v4 whatever u wont get much firing time if you're on the weaker team cuz its always 2v1, or even 3v1.. nobody takes an even fight in CA.. Well dunno, ffa makes you think and if you think well u always have lg cuz u die like 5 times in a game..

I like to play duel on eye to eye. It seems to be the most effective way of training lg imo. Now all thats missing is some nice fellow to teach me and help me with my practice :(

I suppose you could make a pro server on eye to eye with infinte ammo, 1% damage, vampiric etc, maximize firing time and just focus on acc

exactly. I sometimes make CA servers with just lg infinite ammo on eye to eye or thunderstruck, but it takes a long time for anyone to join.

imo, e2e is not so good since you have all the room you want for dodging.

on eyetoeye u really just have aim. dodging easily counterable by circle tactics

That's exactly the point. Try having a 1v1 shaft fight on a narrow ledge (e.g. the RG ledge on dm6) and then attempt to achieve the same accuracy on a wide platform like on Eye to Eye or near the big jumppad on Overkill. I can't.

CA 2v2 is soooo much more different that duel. Sure, high level CA can give you knowledge about positoning, which weapons work best in what situations as you have to deal the highest amount of damage given the situation (same applies to duel) but usually CA is very linear i.e. you fight at the same level, or you pick someone who isnt shooting at you.

And yes, you beat me. Like sooooo many others before you. :D Still, I have played Quake for over a decade now and I still think that CA is a dumbed down version (or different :P) Quake.

it depends on what mod he is looking forward to improve at. If it is CA (lol ca) then 2v2 ca is perfect, but that isn't that much effective if he wants better accuracy (and avoiding damage) in duel.

Even better than CA would be just playing duel warmup for hours on the specific duel maps. I think tox said that's how he trained, and it's not a bad idea.

Yeah, practicing LG on 2v2 CA makes you good at LG on CA ^^ Need to balance it with some duels or something to improve dodging & positioning to optimise it a bit

If you want to master your weapons play some aero. If you play it right, you spam the shit out of every weapon at your disposal. You can play it very shaft heavy, rail heavy or rocket heavy. Give it a try but try not eat too many rockets when you shaft only ppl.

200 200 stack, unlimited lg ammo, ca. Pick a common shaft situation on the map or if you don't know any then just any room. One player goes to the place, other one comes little late (allows him to pick how to attack a position with a shaft, so wait, sneak, surprise whatever) to better simulate in game situation. Switch the roles or pick another room/spot on the map.

The before mentioned 200 200 stack/handicap 1 situation is also good for tracking and getting your finger used to holding shoot button down :)
