Q3 is the deathmatch game

CS:S and CoD4 are the popular team games--TF2 never took off.

cs 1.6 is still way more popular than cs:s.

uh yes it will, CS 1.6 peaks at 300,000 simultaneous players while CS:S has never gone higher than around 70,000 simultaneous players. CS 1.6 never goes below 100,000 while CS:S is usually at around 30k and goes as low as 15k.

Theres a reason that Q3 and CS 1.6 have more players than say Quake 4 and CSS. The reason is because of system requirements, what machine these days can't run both of those games beautifully? Which coincidently is funny because the reason there are a ton of YOUNG CS 1.6 players, is because their dads give them hand me down systems that can only play those types of games.. that and its fun when your 16. :)

The reason isn't the system requirements but the better gameplay. The surveys conducted via the Steam platform show that the vast majority of those players have computers that would run CS:Source perfectly fine. Source was released in 2004 by the way.

Thanks for the obvious fact, but the number 1 factor remains. A lot of those people are children using run down machines and but that game can run smoothly. Sure they could probably run source and minimal settings or mediocre ones.. or if they choose full settings at the cost of frame rate, but most gamers go for performance.. well that and CS Source blows.. that much ill agree, I am
really relating to Quake 3 vs Quake 4.

I won't comment Q3/Q4, but like I said the number one factor for CS 1.6/CSS is the gameplay. Again, the vast majority of the players would easily run CS:S at 100fps without lowering the graphics quality.

the fucking same man... just cos hit registry and recoil are a bit different doesnt blindingly change the tactics that much, you still have to use the same peeking techniques etc.

all of it combined changes the gameplay drastically. CS:S is slower and the gap between good and bad players is reduced by a significant margin.

all minor niggles in the end. No matter what valve did, there would still be uproar from the 1.6ers as any change would likely be heretical, sort of like with quakers.

Don't mean to sound like an ass but usually people that volunteer for surveys like to gloat about their systems and see how they rank against others =P

The hardware stats don't look inflated in terms of system performance, although I'd be interested to know what the 3 people with 127 processor systems are running. The NSA plays steam games I guess.

I prefer to go for performance and I've got a decent rig. Why does high-performance have to = outdated hardware? That makes no sense.

it wouldn't support it, but that doesn't even mean they're getting "performance" quality out of their setups. I use very low quality settings in all of my fast paced DM games, and I could run any of them at full FPS with everything maxed including AntiAliasing.
So yeah, they may have low settings, but low settings does not equal high performance on a old ass rig.

If they really cared about performance they'd upgrade their hardware and leave gfx settings the same as when they had their old AMD athlon+6800+512mb ram rig.

So no, having an old-ass computer does not, in my mind, mean that you care about performance at all. Quite the contrary.

Judging my experience from people who play computer games, including online on a mostly casual basis they all go for graphics first then gameplay.

Yeah Quake 4 is definately doing alot better now. If you use mirc visit #truecarnage on quakenet. If you prefer using xfire go to www.xfire.com/clans/q4ctf and apply, thats basically a Q4 group on xfire (not a clan like in the URL). Or visit www.truecarnage.com post in the forums and check it out.

it might have been even better in the betas, but I didn't play it until version 1.1 and I really enjoyed it until 1.4

If you get into a discussion with most oldschoolers most of them will say beta 5.2 was the height of CS. IMO final 1.3 was the height of CS due to the game having matured and all the maps that was available, only negative thing was roaming radio commands, but you could defeat that in pubs with text binds and voice com in wars.
