The combination of simple(ton) whine for legacy support / behavior, especially from the VQ3 crowd, simply makes the cost of innovation too high to tolerate, which is why CPMA is no longer the "preferred" development platform in the first place.

well, who has the control over the development of vq3? id software, and they will not release a new patch. if someone else (like cpma) changes vq3, it will split the community even more. plus, why take away a gamemode ppl like? if you want a slightly adjusted gamemode, play cq3. its not like everyone would play the new cpma vq3, ppl would use an old version or use osp again.

they didnt change vq3 in this case ... they just improved the q3-mainframe to a point were the blatant design errors in vq3 gameplay start to show up for the masses.

i don't think vq3 is a 'holy cow', I just don't want to see the game I like change to something i like less, thats it. the 'holy cow' effect simply stems from the fact that everyone wants to see different changes, but it's nearly impossible to universally agree on them and therefore there is a 'stalemate'

Why change a running system? In fact Q3 had changes. For example adding maps with 15-secs-weaponrespawn. Or making the LG shells just worth 60 instead of 100 if I am not wrong.

The example for football is true. But I think it was more to keep the game as it was, than try to change it.
Sounds illogical, right? Okey let me try to explain: I am not the football freak, but as I see it, football tend to got boring because when a striker tried to get the ball in the half of the other team, the defender just kicked the ball back to the keeper. Which than catch it with his hands and give it to a player who is not in danger by a striker.
So for the striker it was very hard to get the ball, as he can just use his feet.
The result is a boring game where is much less fighting and nearly handball instead of football.

If a game works, there is no need to change. Take chess, tennis, poker (?).
See on the other hand black jack. Even the game was cracked, it keeps the old rules. Because it would not be fun (?) otherwise.

Also, apart from that minor rule and some slight tweaking to the descriptions of other rules Football is pretty much as it was.

Biggest difference these days is probably the weight of the ball and the quality of the pitches that are played on.

Not to forget the size of the goals =)

the rules for fouls have become much strictor over the years. For example in the beginning it was allowed to attack the goalie even when he had the ball.

Because the first changes is the fine tuning that always happens if you create something new. e.g. putting a Queen in European Chess or having a special field for the serve in tennis.

The ancient chess in India didn't have it, the Persian version has a similar figur except it's a "guy" and the chinese version has cannons instead. Japanese chess is even more different.

Comparing it to physical sports is stupid. Compare it to other (far more popular) competetive video games:

CS - constant balance changes over the years (in the region of hundreds if not thousands of changes)
SC - constant balance changes over the years (in the region of hundreds if not thousands of changes)
WC3 - constant balance changes over the years (in the region of hundreds if not thousands of changes)
DOTA - constant balance changes over the years (in the region of hundreds if not thousands of changes)
etc.

My reasoning for some vq3ers not wanting to change anything is that it's a matter of stubborn pride now which, ironically, could partly be to blame for vq3s loss of popularity.

I guess the problem is that the only way for any changes to get implemented is for the cpma team to implement them under the vq3 gameplay option, and it seems they are reluctant to do so because of the number of people that would bitch. Thing is, that happens when balance changes come out for any game - just look at some of the comments in the WC3/SC/DOTA/CS community when patches come out for them for example.

IMO balance changes are a healthy part of any competetive game, not just because they make the game more balanced, but because they keep it constantly changing, even in very minor ways, that keep people interested, awaiting a new patch to see if their gripe with the game will be fixed, and forcing gameplay to change in adjustment to the changes.

still works, people can't improve physically as much as we see it happen in video games, but there's still many exploits in sports that are being fixed. if you kick the ball back to your goalkeeper all the time, it's boring as fuck but safe and works. if you play dm6 railonly it's boring as fuck but safe and works.

ps. CS also only got worst and worst from it's PUBLISHER made changes (not it's community made ones, there were few; they were all more dumbing down from Valve). Not particularly great since CS was never even good to begin with.

Funnily enough my post was based on the casual and competetive popularity of the games and not whether you like them or not. Q3's playerbase (both casual AND competetive) doesn't even come close to the playerbase for any of these games.

You can not tell me vq3 now is the same as it was in even 2005, let alone 2000. Every kind of change has been made from item placement to minor changes in maps. The only thing that has stayed the same is the perfect weapon balance, which now because of technology and new "netcode" (physics) in cpma which has changed the speed of the game, and a discovery that in the long run certain things break the balance and overrun the game (rail, or dm6 being too one-sided), some of it due to the speed being changed as well, have to be tweaked a little. And even then the lg has constantly changed since 2002.

not really just cpma. cpma is just another in the long line of things which has put the game balance in favour of hitscan.

Also I disagree. All four games take a considerable amount of skill in different areas. WC3/SC both take a ridiculous amount of skill in multitasking/strategy building/psychology/reaction speed/hand to eye coordination/etc. The skill in DotA and CS is focussed more on strategy building, teamwork and team coordination. I'd say WC3 and SC take far more skill to reach a high level in than any FPS game.

no, cs is not focused more on strategy. It's a dumbed down way of playing an fps under the guise of 'realism'. Yes realism can be an entertaining gimmick for 5 minutes but don't try and convince anyone that the mechanics are more demanding than something that doesn't care about realism and only cares about gameplay.
