must admitt im a bit confused why you are doing the article, a lot of time and effort that you could spend on your businesses or whatever. Is this a sign of pure love for the gaming community u have created?

It hasn't been done before, and will make a big different to the gaming mouse market.

For example, the new gaming mice are laser but everyone complains that they skip and are terrible for gaming. Without benchmarks the mouse manufacturers just continue on making crappy mouse because no-one is putting a benchmark score in faces and saying "STOP MAKING CRAP MICE!".

With more information, customers will buy the better mice. That means the people who make mice will have to do better otherwise no-one will buy their products.

Also I hate some of the marketing guff like when people claim their mousewire is so awesome, when I know for a fact that the wire makes no difference whatsoever.

Finally every time I read a mouse review I totally cringe because they always end up playing a game and saying "THIS MOUSE MADE MY FRAG COUNT IMPROVE". It's just total bollocks and I don't want to put up with it, so I expect other people don't want to put up with it either.

Personally I have a hundred new ideas a day and I just don't have time to work on all of them, but I really think this one is important because it's going to make a big difference to the gaming mouse market.

Also I really think this article will drive a lot of people to ESR, which can't be a bad thing. We could use more readers since I really want this site to have some money so that we can send people off to events. Right now we're just kinda breaking even on money but not making quite enough to pay staff like some other sites manage. Putting more focus on ESR through good articles will make all the difference.

(I've been typing non-stop for the last two days on this article, so I'm just spewing words out here, hope you get my drift anyway)

very nice idea. please include a recommended mice section which is based on actual performance in real lgaming usage and not on technical stuff. i'd be able to link hundreds of indian gamers to it and they'd probably believe it as it's on a big e-sports site. a lot of them spend a shitload of money on mice which are reviewed to have patented synapse technology and hyper-response precision blah blah bs. maybe you've already thought of something like this though :)

You should make a special "mouse" section which is easily accessible and easy (for you) to update etc.

Then when new mice are released you can get review samples and do proper mouse reviews with a "league table" style ranking which links to the reviews of each mouse or something.

Sujoy, I gots a question for you that you probably don't answer in your review that you're finishing up. Why is it that with logitech mice I'm able to consistently make a perfect horizontal line and not with microsoft mice?

I don't know if it's just me but for some reason I can just make straighter lines with logitech mice (G3, mx500, mx518) rather than my microsoft mice (wmo 1.1a, IE3.0). It's just weird. Try it out some time and see if you run into the same thing.

What you do is open mspaint and draw the straightest horizontal lines you possibly can with one type. Then try it again with another and compare the two sets.

Noticed the same thing with all Logitechs I tried. I could draw perfect straight lines across the screen - Impossible with any MS mouse, which is weird since I've always found MS mice to be more precise in games. My guess is Logitech optical engine uses some kind of tweak that ignores micro movements making it easier to work in paint programs. I'm almost certain about this. Try drawing a line at a very slight angle with a logitech mouse - it's next to impossible.

I can do a slight angle no problem, it's the straight line with the ms mice I just can't do for some reason.

It's been long known that the MS mice don't give you a straight line when u move them horizontally.

There's a little bit about that. I had already got to 22 pages, so I'm saving surfaces for a different article. Also I need to get hold of more surfaces so I'll have to write to all the people who make them to send me samples.

TBH I don't know if it's going to make much difference so I'll have to take some measurements between stuff like S&S/Qpad/Plain paper etc.

I heard about that a mouse with stock 400 DPI can process the registered images [of the underground/pad] faster than an (for example) 1600-DPI mouse because of the bigger physical image it takes.
For example: A 400-DPI-mouse registers a physical image of the underground as 60x60, while the 1600-DPI-mouse registers the image as 30x30.
The 400-DPI-mouse will register 100 pictures / second of 60x60.
The 1600-DPI-mouse will register 200 pictures / second of 30x30.

Thus the 400-DPI can process the images faster than the 1600-DPI mouse -> less neg. accel.

Setting the 1600-DPI-mouse to 400 DPI won't help, because it will still take a picture of 30x30 and only upscale it to 60x60.

(The numbers are imaginary!)

This is highly theoretical and I don't know at all if this "formula" is even 50 percent correct, but it seems to apply practically.

PS: I hope you could follow me (I'm not a native speaker - u surely noticed :>)

I did find that all mice with switchable DPI simply scale down their numbers, so you don't get better performance from a 1600 DPI mouse by switching it to 400 DPI.

None of the mouse produced curved graphs in their 'sensible' area. The negative acceleration that people notice is not a curved graph but something else. When you see the article you'll see why.

It is down to the higher DPI though but not in the way you suggest.

You need a higher datapath (or whatever it is they call it) for higher DPI right?

e.g. WMO = 8bit mx518 = 16bit

not neccesarily, but bigger datapath will help against negative accel (afaik)

If you do a big movement with a 30x30 sensor then you have to process those images quicker than a slow one. If you do the same with 60x60 then you have to send them just as quick but with an 8bit datapath it might result in some getting "droped" resulting in negative acceleration or the mouse freaking out (Like the mx510 did where it would randomly point directly up/down).

That's how I've always thought of it anyway. It's like trying to put too much stuff through a pipe at the same time.

You're on the right track with data path issues.

It's probably partially the data path and partially the polling rate seeing as those are the two primary factors for data transmission.
