I did last night and acquired some Chicken in Satay sauce (with the "special spicy" sauce). and it was extremely good but not worth the £69 total cost to the five of us. do you remember any especially good places which are relatively cheap?

I would say you have to do all the tacky tourist crap, I.E. jump on a red bus and take a tour of all the main attractions.

Canary Wharf is worth a visit cuz it looks like a different world and has loads of cool places to eat, though dress pretty smart or you'll look out of place.
It has a Chilli's there which you'll know of from the states.

Inner London. Harrods/London eye/Tower Of London, go to piccadilly and check out the Trocadero, it's like a huge entertainment centre full of arcade machines and it pretty cool.

Soho, always worth a walk through just for a laugh :)

Hamleys toy shop-Micheal Jackson goes there so it must be vool.

Then you got the science museums and stuff. I know it sounds boring, but it's not full of fossils and shit, it's modern stuff.

Go for a walk in Hyde Park, prolly next towhere you staying (Bayswater??)

Check out computer Exchange on Rathborne place, just off oxford street near the huge centre point building (near tot court road)
Loads of gaming stuff in there-nothing like it in tbh:)

If you want artsy stuff go to the tate or grab a show in the west end (shaftsbury av)

The thing is, London has everything and we don't know what he likes. Does he like books? Eating in a good restaurant? Shopping for clothes? Shopping for gadgets? Visiting museums? Clubbing or concerts? Shopping for music? Taking walks and pictures?

We need to know more about his tastes.

No computer exchange is still cool becasue you get to see everything in the flesh and can actually rummage throuh all the old games and bits of hardware. It's all there to take in.

Secondly, it all depends on what part of the USA he's from and where he's travelled too. It's still a cool place, clean, fresh, a nice break from Central London. Some peple from central USA have never evn been to the ocean.

yep, bayswater, good call =) i've been to soho which is indeed a laugh and i've visited tracadero which is also extremely interesting. haven't had a good chance to walk through hyde park though because of how shitty the weather has been so far. i'm hoping for a day free of rain to experience a place as nice as that. it really suck that our two days of freedom have contained the ugliest weather. oh well, i think i'll have some more leisure time at some point later this week.

we're visiting stratford tomorrow (shakespeare's home).

This weekend has been total shit :(

holy shit, this thread's hilarious. After five days, i'm pretty done with touristy shit (I definitely like seeing all the places mentioned in neil gaiman novels though), and really wanna do some of my own thing, which is what i'm doing right now (in an internet cafe. £1/half hour seems expensive though). i already feel bad for being american in the city as it seems they just want me to get the fuck out anyway =P apologies for that.

so far i have to say piccadilly's arcade is amazing and i definitely enjoy HMV stores. the cuisine around is only "meh" till now, but i'm making that judgment based purely on the plates which were provided by the travel company Explorica which decided on all our dinners (prepared in mass--everyone in our group gets the same thing). i've already paid for it or i'd go somewhere i WANT to go for dinner. lunches are still independent but we're usually a decent distance from chinatown which is fucking spectacular, though the only restaurant in which I've eaten in there wasn't wonderful. tonight and all of tomorrow, we're free to eat whereever we wish, so i'm hitting up chinatown for sure and an indian place.

i don't think i'll have a chance to visit oxford without paying a decent amount for a train ticket, so i won't get a chance to check out that computer exchange place. it sounds awesome =(

coolest thing about london so far has to be the amount of culture in advertisements. seriously, posters for books and theater DO NOT EXIST in america outside of book stores or actual theaters. here, they're all over the "tube" and i fucking love it.

worst thing: finding out about the Hi-Fi concert taking place the 2 days after I leave (Hard-Fi, Super Furry Animals, The Go! Team, and about 30 others). That and walking like an insane amount, though it's worth it to see some of the sites.

Again, sorry for invading the city without your permission. Next time, I'll be sure you ask first =P
