In Q3 you could get decent basic skills by playing bots offline but there aren't any bots in Q4 (yet). Just keep on messaging on IRC with "very low", will take some time but you will get better.

Play with 1.1 and u can use bots. (bit search on google)
And watch demos :)

I know how you feel dude, i tried playing with my right/left hands reversed, it's really hard -- everyone was sooo skilled, even the simplest of moves were impossible.. Must take soooo long to get good -- i don't think you can get good at all unless you enjoy losing, a lot!

Besides BooTes tip, i think getting some of your friends to play is a good idea, and perhaps playing some other quake/unreal games, if you don't find low enough skill.

Yea, I was thinking about getting a friend or to to play the game.. But it's hard. I had played a bit of CPMA Clan Arena with some of them so they're very much used to running around and not caring about anything but the frags. Dunno if I'd be able to convince them to dueling in Q4 but I'll try ;p

If you're dueling, make sure you understand the basic concepts of a duel and know what you're working towards. Don't try and learn game specifics right off, my biggest mistake was I spent so long treating the game as a FFA as apposed to a duel.

Playing people your own skill is good, but you have to keep in mind fooki is among the best and players that are notably 'above' him are few and far between. Play a mix of people because chances are stuff you learn in a 40-0 rape game won't be noticeable until you can put it into practice vs a less skilled or same skilled player.

Well, yea, I know a bit about dueling or at least I think I do. But that's theoritical stuff like 'you need to time items' or 'listen to the game' or 'shoot rockets at the feet of the nme'.. But putting it to practice is another thing ;D

But what do you mean by 'game specifics'? Timing items, etc., or what?

Also, how do you think, is playing only one map in the beginning is good?

My idea is to learn all the basics playing one map (i.e. Galang), you know, timing, listening to the game, knowing where the enemy is and foreseeing his moves and then move on to other maps. Because if I'll try to play different map each time I will end dazed and confused ;)

Most RA bastards have good aim, however the people who have the best aim are duelers and "proper" tdm players.

Also, excluding sweden, I think the best way of getting your aim up is playing bots, to emulate playing with a very low, constant ping. Learning to play on 50 ping is not very good standard practise, especially in Q4.

If he can get a nice low ping to some RA servers it may be a good idea, but it won't be as constant as bot practise.

My theory is that new players finds this game boring and it's only the real zealots who stays with it. I guess practicepracticepractice is the only way to go and it's always really boring until you get really good at a game.

What I would recommend is try to introduce some of your friends to the game and play with them for a few months. You will all be on a similar skill level and you would get used to navigating the game enviroment, the maps and the weapons, after that you will be able to start doing the whole timing and controlling thing and you should be able to start turning around those high scores :)

Of course, there begins your lifelong pain and aggression towards yourself because you cannot understand why you cannot aim. After you have played constantly for 4 years and still can't aim for shit after trying everything, I recommend quiting for a year or 2. When you start playing again you will aim perfectly and time in your sleep. :)

Just kidding, you will probably learn how to aim a lot faster than I did, like most of the bastards that learn how to play now-a-days. You know I took 6 fucking months to learn how to strafe jump!

Nah, if you just carry on playing like you do and ask for advice after every game you'll probably improve very fast, I would just recommend playing something that you can play constantly, the q4 scene isn't very big, you might wanna play the q3 bots by yourself and q4 online. The games are very similar.

When I started playing nobody really knew what they were doing which is why everyone advanced so slowly.

dedicate where your problem is.
is it aim?
is it movement?
is it tactic?

if you want to learn aim: play ffa or rocket arena (or sabot)
if you want to learn movement: just run around a map of your choice as smooth as you can.
if you want to learn tactic: watch demos, read articles, etc.

if ur dueling, practise on running items, instead of thinking u need to get frags, u can play ra4 to improve ur aim, and when uve combind the two, ul own! gl :)

It's very hard to get into Q4, most players have several years of experience,
but I advise you to train your aim first, everything else will come then ...
first get at a decent level on aim and closecombat fight ...
play FFA and Rocket Arena: Duel Arena ... if you play regularly and you are above mid skill, then you should begin to play 1on1, with no good aim training 1on1 is almost useless ...
