Anonymous has a point. 2GD said on one of his streams that they put in a vql physics approximation just to have something to be able to test stuff.

If that is true those physics are only a placeholder and not meant to be taken seriously.

In that respect I find it a bit funny that people have already (proudly) recreated dm6 and the bridge to rail jump when those physics are unlikely to stay.

(But who knows, maybe they will be kept as a game-mode for all the quake fan boys.)

All I can tell from that is that nothing is permanent yet. Also take into account that there will be different robots with different physics. Or maybe he meant they will have the same physics but with different gimmicks like teleport etc. So whatever, maybe you're right. (Haven't tried it yet.)

That being said 2GD mentioned that Firefrog was / used to be some security expert by way of "breaking into things" if I recall correctly. Not sure if that should be comforting or not.

well a stray screenshot of somebody's web browser got downloaded with one of the updates but no other more serious crap noticed on this end so far.

I found the actual page on the Reborn forum. I'll quote the exact response and my apologies maybe for being a bit too paranoid. :/

Your browser is hijacked by previous ad-ware. Reborn has been downloaded 3000 times and you are the first user to report an actual infection. And keep in mind this is at the moment a computer literate community, if there was ad-ware inside Reborn, we'd know about it.

The way it works is some software sets up a malicious proxy in your browser configuration, this can be done without administrator privileges because it's a user setting. Then, it waits until you download the next installer for any software, anything that is an exe file, but you are actually downloading ad-ware that comes from the malicious proxy. When it asks for permission to install, you'll click accept giving it administrator privileges and that is how they gain privileges to install whatever they want, including startup services. You were gonna get the ad-ware deployed next time you installed anything, it just happened to be Reborn.

nope, that was just a misclick when saving an image to the pc. that happened when we were setting up /r/reborngame :)

I think the trojan/virus/windows doesn't trust this shit was probably because of a lack of certificate on the program (similar to how some websites require those, but i think for a program its called something else).

Like there wasn't an authentication on the program. (ya w/.e that means).

Great. You finally have the ability to easily create any map you like (and be able to also play it) and they go and start re-creating the crap maps from quake.

Finally there is no need anymore to play these garbage maps and then they do this.

I will never understand why some people love this map so much.
It's the kind of map a first time mapper makes to figure out how things work for then to move on to making a proper map.

(If I remember correctly this used to be a rocket arena map? Doesn't matter, point remains the same.)

Actually a lot of cool stuff is being made by mappers, many new maps as well. The thunderstruck thing happened after i mentioned it on irc, one dude made it in a few hours while streaming the whole process, it was interesting to watch, it was a perfect showcase of how easy it is to create with this blocking system and also how limiting it really is right now.

And btw most of the old quake maps wont play great (or will be too easy to move around on) with reborn's new movement mechanics. For example there is at least 3 ways to do b2r without even knowing how to strafejump.

plus having notexture blocks in a prealpha version isnt exactly discouraging to Q3 picmip players. will this game need some fancy gfx at some point? totally does. is a good movement system, fluid engine and adaptable config/console way more important to us right now? hell the fuck yes!

No the movement isn't good. It feels clumsy as fuck, like Q4 but way worse. Also all the alt fire weaons and the rest of gimmicks make it too tryhard to "not be Q3"

Isnt that personal opinion? You dont like the movement in Reborn while others do? I still think it will improve. Also you have Reverse in Reborn, that feature is so smooth, really adds on the gameplay

What is Reverse?

Something that reverses your current movement. If you're falling, you go back up, if you're going forward, you go backwards, etc.

+ reborn is said to support linux of the go, while reflex wont = clear choice for me atleast

I am pretty sure James said in the earlier videos of reborn dev that the vq3 movement was just a reference to get started with. He clearly stated he wanted the movement to be different and not have any old q3/q; pro come in and op to the top of the ranks D:

old q3/q pros will dominate in any fast paced FPS unless it has shitty movement enough that movement skills don't matter as much.

I heard this aswell, but seems like he forgot it himself. He also stated for like 1 year ago that a pro quake player tried the new movement and liked it better then quakes. But I dont think there will be any new movement, simply old movement with some new mechanics.. Would be better if ID just made a new quake..

I agree but however, they should still be a curve to learn new weapons and find new tactics on new maps and what not. Like right off the bat, rapha has build a positional play so he still needs time to actually find the new spots and such.

I hope it follows the SC2 model of swapping out maps every ranked play season rather than playing the same maps for 10 years.

I really think they're going to run into an issue trying to balance four classes that can play against each other (In duel, probably fine for team games), can't see that sticking.

I agree. From the sounds of it the gameplay mechanics are coming up more complex than I hoped for, but you don't have to lose hope and be so uninspired about it though. Classes and Quake movement worked fine in Team Fortress classic and that game was fucking tits.

I don't see the problem here, sounds like every popular game these days, but includes good fluid movement and alternative means to conquer your opponents.

To answer your points:
1 - How different is this to other popular games, or boosts / powerups?
2 - Unless you have only 2 fingers on each hand and 1 brain cell you might struggle?
3 - Above points 1 & 2 & are you kidding?
4 - Very handy, for e.g. worked a treat in QWUKCTFL where there was a game lobby, before you went to the map, to ensure you got all players ready, and everything set up.

Classes in reborn arent like classes in other games. I usually hate classes because it cuts up the gameplay into little pieces and splits them among the classes. For example in most games 1 class can only access like 10% of all the guns in the game and might be very slow.

In reborn you will be able to access every single gun as every class and will be fast. It wont be like TF2 where if you are a demoman you only have access to 2 guns and move slowly because you arent the scout class.

Regardless of your class you will move fast and can have like 10 guns on you at once.

Also lots of weapons and alt fires is something I really like. Mixes up the gameplay and often allows for some awesome plays when people have mastered the guns. It just has to be ballanced well

I am with the class thing, could be quite a good game play for CTF. You either sit in defence with your Heavy equipment or get your fast movement class to chase the flag runner, and potentially may pay the price if you don't outshoot the faster flag runner, or other scenarios.

Part of the skill of CTF is the management of resources. To be honest I think QL CTF could do with longer respawn times on guns. But I think everyone should have access to all guns.

What I do like the idea of though is classes where a capper class might have cpm movement and 80hp by default (health decays to 80 if it goes higher) and a def class could have vanilla movement with 125hp by default (health decays stops at 125) and then fire rates and other small things could be tweaked on each class.

But I dont think the access to guns should be restricted. How they work can be altered but one of the great things about arena shooters is that you are often running around with like 6 guns that all have a role and different way of firing.

Much more interesting than a game where you can only have 2 guns at once
