Hell yeah I'm back to make another irritating thread!

This is one thing that's interested me when it comes to gaming. Everyone always says "Do it on LAN" "beat [x] on LAN" "C U @ LAN" etc but the one thing that's interested me is the question of: Is LAN really the ultimate judge of 'skill'?

I say this because the main draw to why LAN is accepted as the way of showing who's better is due to pings, net, same hardware/surroundings etc.
The one thing in that list though that I feel is quite important is surroundings (that is, comfort levels)

Lets take one example. Strenx is always winning these weekend cups, even against people who looses to frequently at LAN. Is he winning them because of internet/pings/net or because he's more comfortable in his own surroundings (sitting in his bedroom or whatever with his own hardware). Is Cooller/Cypher frequently loosing to Strenx in these Zotacs because of the ping etc or winning at LAN because he has more experience and is more comfortable at LANs? More to the point, is Strenx loosing at LAN because of the comfort or because of the skill? If the LAN was situated in Strenx's bedroom, who would win...?

Just an interesting question really. I'm really playing devil's advocate here because I believe that LAN would be the better show of who's 'better' and do think that Cooller/Cypher plays much better then Strenx, but the question is still very valid

Mhn I remember the dm6 scene at eswc when strenx had 80 hp or something at shards and lost with lg to cooller who had only a mg and spawn hp. Noctis said that strenx was shaking and you could see it on the stream when he fucked up some lg situations he should have taken easily. That cost him the map.

Winning a lan tournament requires a bit more than an internet cup. The adaptability to certain settings like people watching over your shoulder while playing, the pressure you get the more you advance in the tournament, cameras right beside you (iem) and different settings like monitor, seat light and so on.

This pretty much. One thing I've thought is that I'd find it very hard to play in a large LAN cup because of small things. I've got a raised desk and a certain seat. You see these pictures of LAN with people stacking garden chairs to get close to the way they play at home. Makes ya wonder

SIMPLE man.
If we let away presure factor, not home pc and so on , talking exactly about strenx and others top5 players etc rapha cooller avek cypher dahang:
40-50 ms fits strenx gameplay, but it doesnt for coollers , raphas , cypher and so on. the mine point is that, strenx in lan not playing better then from home (he even does worse), but other players doing better in lan, becoz of lan better suits them gameplay.
it's becoz strenx is slowest in fight player (he runs fast in map, but attacks shit). he is using lg+rail and others more rocket , plazma , they attack more faster and more creative, becoz of lan.

The comfort levels at LAN events could be better I think, keeping in mind the "(sitting in his bedroom or whatever with his own hardware)" point. Hardware ofcourse should be irrelevent because I don't see various up to date graphic cards or CPUs influencing gameplay. However the surrounding could easily be improved. Provide players in the later stages of tournaments with rooms instead of plastic penalty boxes we usually have. Rooms one can costumize - play sitting on a sofa if you wish, or set up 50 lava lamp around you (not provided by the event organizer)

If players had the possibility to choose their immediate, but they were all on the same network and had the same hardware/software setup, then the conditions would truly be equal and skill/form would be the only relevant elements.

I think the main reason as to why LAN is the ultimate place to show your skill, is because of the stress it can give.

I mean playing comfortably in your dark room with none behind you watching your every move is very different...

Handling the stress is a key factor imo. Best players can handle it, also you learn to handle it, hence why you're not gonna win at your first LAN experiences...

LAN mind-isolation via full focus on the game is part of the skill of a good player? Fsck yeah! (Note: im incredibly handicaped in lan play)
