It's actually got a lot better.

Played it some over the holiday with my team (Some TDM/CA) and the main problems were either tiny things like not being able to choose enemy model colour (Or team mates colour) and the actual in round TDM settings (and the same old maps).

Progress is still painfully slow though and I still expect it to be released in a terrible state and thus fail.

after a year+ of development they still haven't implemented pause. pause man..

dunno, I joined just recently, can't imagine how it was a year ago. barely managed to get the damn webpage to show inet games. only after lots of forum reading and doing the stupid tutorial over and over did I get it to work, partly... and they say it's the thing they've been working on the most, heh.

They took down the online user count display shortly after I pointed out how few people were even online/playing. I take it that it's been added again, but I wouldn't trust it any more than I trust Blizzard to say how many subscribers they have.

I guess you are talking about a lan tournament.
The first thing I'd do is to ask id software if they'll give you a version that allows you to host servers on lan.

If you want to attract 32 top players, the prizemoney distribution shouldnt be too top heavy. I think for a 32 player tournament, prizemoney for top8 would be a good compromise.
It would probably look smth like this:
1. 4000 $
2. 3000 $
3. 2000 $
4. 1000 $
5/6. 750$
7/8. 500$
Which would make 12500$ in total. This would be a good sum to attract most good players, but more is always better :)

As for the top32 ql players I'd say you are on the safe side if you just pick the top q3 players, since ql is barely different (as quakecon has proven). Also, I don't see really much top players playing ql, I think this is partly cause of some prefer q3 (as long as there are no ql tournaments) and the lack of private servers.
If you wanna know who is playing right know, you can go in the friends manager and type in the well-known names.

It's almost impossible to gauge the top32 in QuakeLive right now because there is no proper competitive scene.

Make it fairly open. If you're worried 32 shit players will sign up first, don't make it first come first serve. Require a small fee to signup, or an application process (like ESWC for MoP). Or perhaps run a qualifying process with the Top1/2 players from round robin groups (Region based ideally) qualifying.

On the money side, I don't think you require a lot, ideally you want a fair amount of the players to be able to realistically earn some money back. If it's successful you want to be able to interest players to come to more, and you would want to hold them more often. If most people aren't getting any money, they can't keep it up.

A fairly flat distribution of money is the way to go, stretching to Top16 ideally.

Prize money aside what format would choose? The ESWC one seems to be the best one (IMHO) with it being a compromise between SE and DE... also wider prize distribution than top 3 is a must.

Imo the only way to get top 32 to attend is to play online, I really doubt players ranked 10-32 will have money/time/sponsorship to attend a lan event.

Also, right now theres 800 ppl online, 15 (or more) duel servers with 2 or more players on and I have 15 friends online, sure it might not be that much but its more than vq3 had a year ago ;)

Look at the recent ESWC Masters, 16 players attended when prizemoney was only for top4. I think with prizemoney for top8 you can easily fill up a 32 players lan tournament in (central) europe.

15 players attended right? linkin had to cancel in the last minute if I remember right, and 4 of the players were greek gods? I dont remember but I guess at least 2 maybe 3 were american? and this was in the warmer part of the year so people could add vacation to their gaming ;)

Anyway, I really doubt top 32 would make it, better to host it online imo, save money on accomodation and stuff, obviously wont need as big payouts either, although I would prefer a flat payout either way.

Also, if you want top 32 players just host DE qualifications.

You'll always have late drop outs (even online) and local players who might rather attend then players from overseas. If you want a decent tournament, there is no way around LAN. How should an american play vs a russian online? And look how effective Punkbuster works in QL. :(
Still, an online tournament is better then nothing.

With 32 players, I think the best system is doing 2 groupstages and a 4 player single elimanation, ESWC style. To avoid throwing matches in groupstage 2, 3rd place in each group should be awarded with 5.6. place (4th place in GS2 ->7/8 place). Only works with prizemoney for top8, though.

imo, if you want a REAL tournament you gotta host it offline, otherwise it's just not that spectacular. You won't have photos taken by journalists/fans/attendees, no on-the-fly interviews, all that drama :(

I'm with you when you say, more players can attend easily the online tournament, but surely, it's just not that interesting.

Agreed with what some people above said. Don't make it top 32 only, make it open, I doubt 32 players would even show up even if it was open (just because of the size of the Quake community)

Alternatively you can hold qualifiers online, but you'd need private servers. Also, Quake Live isn't really 100% ready for competition, so maybe stick to Q3 (maybe even CQ3?)
