the mice and mousepads most quake players use vary

most quake players use optical mice as opposed to lazer, but mice will also work better on certain mousemats depending on if you prefer using high or low sens

as long as the mouse functions correctly without bugs/errors/eratic movement etc... then the mouse is suitable

a popular mouse for quakers is the microsoft mice:

(WMO) wheel mouse optical
ms ie 1.1a
ms ie 3.0

Alot of quakers today also play with some of the razer mice, a popular one is the "razer deathadder" - similar to the "ms internet explorer 3.0" as mentioned above in terms of shape... it also has an updated sensor with 1800dpi (suitable if you use a higher resolution) and can function out of the box at 1000hz (1ms response time) so you dont have to worry about patches and fixes to your windows registry yourself which can be harmful if you don't know what your doing

finally the other popular mouse is the "logitech mx 5--" series, these again are optical sensors and are less prone to errors.

its again important to mention that it doesnt actually matter which one you use, you can be the best at any game you want if you have the ability and the effort to play enough, aslong as your mouse doesnt do stupid things like go left when you move it right, the best tip i can give you is make sure it fits your hand nicely :)

i have used all the mice mentioned above, and also some lazer mice, the only difference to me, was the shape :)

as for the mousemats, ask that question after you have selected the mouse, and then write down the ones people tell you not to buy :) they most probably have tracking issues.
