When i was a wee nipper kids used to say to me,' wayne the pain falls mainly on the plain in a chocolate aeroplane'. I thought it was quite funny tbh.

Haha, I was waiting for someone to bring this up and surprise surprise it's Daryl(actually I am surprised its him!). I was not going to bother explaining why I sucked on that day because of the mentality of a few people on this board. But here it is.

No excuses, just the facts.

10 days before the event I started losing motivation to play q4.
I have said countless times on these forums before that maps like lost fleet not only destroy my motivation to play the game short term, but also take a chunk out of my enjoyment of the game fullstop. Several others players with a lot more credit to their name have also said about how maps like Lost Fleet zaps their motivation to play. Fooki and Vo0. So I'm not alone with that thought. Anyway.
I had a lot of faith that Lost Fleet as a map would be dropped and seeing as the only event I want to do well at is the CPL summer event then for over two weeks now I have decided to stop playing that map. Simply becuse I believe it will get dropped by CPLsummer. Though I'm starting to question the CPL q4 committe, seeing as they are all USA players who mostly like the map. I'm not accusing anyone of cheating, but I seriously doubt any of them are going to throw out a map they feel they do well on.
What happened to democacy? Why not take a q4 map vote from the people and the europeans that put so much into the FPS scene? Anyway...
As a result I have not even bothered playing the map more than 3 times since christmas. The simple reason everytime i play the map it questions my motivations for playing the game fullstop.

Anyway, fast forward to the event. I arrive at the LAN centre having never played Q4 on a LAN basis, when most of the players there had been there for a day or so before, so were not only used to the LAN conditions, but also the setup.

Following on from there, when I unpacked my equipment I realised that my left movement key had snapped off. And it was not just snapped off, it was truly screwed.
Now, many people said why don't you just use a different keyboard?
The reason being, I use a laptop style keyboard, which has been cut/butchered and customised SPECIFICALLY so that I can play the game and use arrows.

Now, how many people have you seen who go to such extreme measures to get the exact feeling of weight they want from a mouse?
So much so that they will drill holes in the thing to get what I think of as the perfect weight.

You may also note that the left key is not working here.

As you can see it's been hacked around a little bit. You'll also see that the left movement key don't work fullstop. Also you can ask Jabbor, Zaccabus, Hell and Jonjay because they were there and jonjay even offered to go out and get me another, but I exmplained it would be pointless getting a new keyboard this close to the tourney.

So anyway, by the time I realised it was broke it was around 11 am. So I ran out, bought some super glue and tried fixing it while I was eating a subway sandwich. I'm pretty sure one or two of the gamers saw me walking outside with a keyboard under my arm. Anyway. I fixed the thing back on inside Subway, came back to the LAN. Nothing. It was still not working because I could not get the rubber key to sit properly.
Anyway, spent a bit more time faffing with it. IN this time I met Jonjay and we said hello and he tried to help me out with it. Luckily, I managed to fix it on and get some sort of output from the keyboard. It was not perfect, seemed a bit sticky, but worked ok.
By the time this happened I had about 40 minutes until the first game started and I had not plaed in over 24 hours and never played on LAN before.

So on with the setting up. Next problem was the room. THe truth is I had to rest my keyboard halh on Zaccabus's mouse mat because there was so little room. If you don't believe him then ask.
As a result, the keyboard wobbled, and to make matters worse the keyboard was 50% closer to me than what I had been used to at home.
The reason being there was simply no room. To prove this I remember being envious of Levi 215, simply because he had one of the few spots on the event and he also played with his arm fully streched out.
If that was not a genuine issue then ask me why would I specifically rememebr the play style of a player I did not even talk to at the event?

Then there was the monitor. Again this was 50% closer to what I was used to at home. For all of those going yeh yeh, just try this test.

1) Load up Q4.
2)Move your keyboard 50% closer.
3) Move towards the monitor 50% closer than you normally do.

NOw start running around the level. The first thing you'll notice is it feels like you're FOV has been lowered from 110 to about 95.
Which does a great job of making you clip into walls, not to mention the headache it gives so.
There was no room to move the monitor back any further. I did try, but directly opposite me were Astz and R2k and ther simply was no room because the pc's were back to back.

To get around this I had the cunning idea of increasing my FOV to 120.
Again this made things feel even more different, but it stopped me from getting a headache. By this time I think I had about 30 minutes before my game withJay.
At this point I had not played a single game ofq4 in over 24 hours and within 30 mins I had to play the bet in the UK and someone who own about 99% of the people reading this.

So, I then jump onto a server. To find thye are all passworded.
"HEll, what's the PW?

Ok cool. So on there it was something like Me,hell, Garpy and maybe ddk just running around on Lost Fleet.
At this point I knew I was in deep shit. Everyone of my shots seemed to miss. The shaft felt different my sens felt different, the movement felt different.
It felt horrible. I said to Zaccabus...
This feels different. And he said different in a good or a bad way?
I said bad I think.

At this point I would also like to say I don't make many excuses. Iv'e taken a lot of beatings online, and 9/10 I'll stick in there and not quit out, so I'm not the type of person who lies about stuff. In fact I really hate that.

Nearly there. Oh and before some people accuse me of breaking my keyboad on purpose then get real.
If I was all mouth then surely I would have declined the offer to even attend. The truth is I knew Jay would win me easy, but I believe that if the online games were anything to go by then I would have have a definite crack at Vorv and R2k. I didn't feel inferior or superior. I just felt that before I arrived I could hold my own and I still believe that to be the case.
Anyway, with 10 minutes before the games started I knew I needed more time. I knew that even if everything was perfect and I played the game of my life, Jay would still win comfortably,especially as he had picked lost fleet.
So I had one strat and one single objective when I played jay. TO use the game as a warmup.
I'm not talking creeaping around and playing for vanity pointsorseriously making a serious attempt at beating. By this time I still needed the basic luxury of warming up my movement. Feeling how the shaft is on lan when I hit with it etc. So that's exactly how I played. I simply ran around the level at 100 MPH, most of the time giving very little care to where he was,because it was wiser for me to get as much movment in as possible as opposed to playing it slow and trying. Rememeber I had already concluded that this game was lost, so the smart move was to just use it aswarmpu and that's what I did. I mean ffs I scored 7 frags vsJay on Lost fleet? Had we both have been playing proper I doubt I would have gotten that many, but it would not have been 51-7 or whatever it was.
After a couple of minutes he knew he had won, I knew I had lost and it was literally just rail rail, it was fun.
Sadly Lost fleet was the last game we played and I havesaid time after tieme whenever I paly that map I just dont wnt to play q4after it. It just ruins my motivation to play.
Anyway, after that, instead of playing some more warmup I was spamming ESR.

I was smamming ESR 15 mins before my Vorv game. I just knew it was pointless. I had hardly any playtime vs jay because he wmore or less killed me every few seconds. If you don't collect the armors in q4 or play in a proper 1v1 fashion then you die very, very quickly.

Also at this point I would like to say the keyboard was working ok. A lil sticky, but it did not pop out of place or anything.

Anyway, then my Vorv game came around. I think he picked Phrantic, and I picked blip. I got totally rocked on Phrantic. About 3 mins into the game the key started to really play up. Once or twice it jammed and it automatically pulled me into the lava. And by automatically I mean when I was 100/100 and it just pulled me in. At this point that little switch flicked and I thought fuck this. It's pointless. I don't want to play. Insteado f quitting I carried on, all the time knowing I was going to lose and I was not going to bother adopting any strats which would take the game around.
He got like over 35+ g#frags on me on Phrantic when I'm pretty sure I have an autorecrod demo of us playing the very same map a week before with less than 3 points in it.
Now all of a sudden he's leading by 30+ frags. Not to take anything away from Vorv, but the score gap was down to me, more than his style of play.

On blip I felt better because there were no lava pools. So strated out with god intentions. This was only game I tried playing properly for, but after a few minutes I got killed and by which time I waswell pissed of with the whole thing.
YOu know those times when you just don't want to play q4 ever again?
Well, this was that, so I started doing shit like rocket jumping from LG, I also looked at the YA, shook my head at them and did not even bothering collecting them.
I was just pissed off with everything and by this time my keyboard was well and truly fucked.
You just can't play at this level and be so uncomfortabl with the settings. For any other player they might have adapted a lot better, but seriously, you have to understand and acknowledge that people obsessive enough to drill 100's of holes into their equipment to get it perfect are abnormally fussy and the things that might not have been the end of th world for you were major obstacles for me.
I think Vorv had been there a day or two before the event bootcamping too. As had most of the palyers. If I had done that then I probably would have gotten used to thw whole thing, but as it stood it wasjust much.

After the Vorv game I had a game with R2k which I decided to offer him a default because the keyboard was totally screwed.
On top of that I did not want to play fullstop.

At the end of the day I have a selection of automatically recorded demos stored on my pcvsdecent players. Some from sponsored clans who get extremely pissy when I beat them.
So if a few opportunists want to go haha you suck then go ahead.
I suppose you were the same people who were dissin vo0 when he lost 30-5 vswins on Phrantic and then beat him on the same map the second time around. The reason being there are times when people give up and score means nothing.

This was a good experience for me. In futue I'll ensure that if I lan I will go to the venue a day or so before hand to get used to it.
Noot just the game but the equipment, screensize (I used a 21 inch monitor day to day) and basically everything.
And for daryl I never made an wild accusations. I simply said I am aiming for a top 16 spot at CPL Summer. And I still hope to be able to do that, but if you're going to judgeme then at least do it under better conditions instead of taking what were nightmare circumstances for myself.
The event was great, I was just unprepared for the impact of lan, and the keyboard fucking up was beyond my control and was definitely not something I had done on purpose.

I also see a few cooler comments here. Rememebr Cooler vs Toxic on Dm6 at eswc?
For those that havea clue about how games work then they'll probably understand what I'm saying.
For the rest that don't then it don't matter because I'm only bothered in talking/mixing with peeps who understand shit happens from time to time.
And as Fooki told me before the event. EVERYONE SUCKS AT THEIR FIRST LAN.
I'm not even taking losses as serious because it was pointless me playin g with the amount of things that were bothing me.
Don't forget to do the 50% closer test. Play q4 for 10 mins and enjoy the migraine.
And if you dont believe me then get sujoy to retrieve the demos. Watch how I avoid armors and do stupid Rocket Jumps to mirror my state of mind at the time.
But then I gues you'll say I did that on purpose or something.

I dumped my keyboard in the bin and I also left my mouse mat at the lan, so i'm usin this tiny keyboard Ibought a few months ago to replace the one that broke as it had been dogy for months. Sadly its way to small and my fingers kep bumping to dif keys.

The committee was open to anyone who wanted to join... you had to send an application to Justin and if you were going to compete, then you would be in the committee.

Obviously, no Europeans sent applications therefore there were no Europeans on the committee.

I thought that we should add some Euros... I'm sure if someone from Europe was to send an E-Mail to Justin, then they could probably get on.

I think everyone's waiting for his next 'know it all' comment before they wade in. Also a factor is that he may be annoyingly opinionated, but to his credit he's not nasty, even when provoked (well most of the time).

Give the guy a break. Both toogoood and vorv have played 1000 times more than jamerio(Quake2/3/4) .

I haven't watched the demo but I suspect that jamerio gives up after a while and when you give up in quake4 the opponent will get a billion frags per minute. I also suspect that Jamerio plays aggressive (he did vs me) and that will make the scores even higher when losing/winning.

I've never read that jamerio claimed that he is a top player nor that he will be a real topplayer. As far as I know all he has said is that he might give his full time practising a lot and hopefully do well. I think he said something about being top10 or whatever in uk is the goal and it sounds like a good goal to me.

he told me that his comment about daler and doom3 was not that serious, before and that he thought it was weird that daler took it so seriously and got pissed off. I also played jamerio in doom3 a few times and he was a topplayer there.

THe comment I made about Daler and Fatal1ty was because neither of them had played Doom 3 in over 10 months and was more of a passing comment. I think raped was a strong word too. Was just a figure of speech. At the time I had been training for about 6-7 months solid in preperatin for the D3 qcon tourney.

I just said that I believed I could beat both those players at Doom 3. Not because I am more skilled, but simply because they stopped playing it and moved onto PK where as I carried on playing it and had a huge time advantage. The same applies to lots of other players.
I did say that at the time, but Daler had a really tough time with accepting that even with his 2 months playtime of doom3 (from 8-9 months earlier) compared to my continious 8-9 months.
Was I wrong to say that? Perhaps but was only saying what I believed was the truth. I'm sure he'd rape me in q4 atm. Best wait till Qcon and Summer CPL :/

Hahaha, there is only a handful of people of his quality in the world, and no I'm not one of them. I think in one of my old journals or something I discussed a tier system with skill. What I noticed was that there was a large amount of really good players down here mostly around the same level (which I was apart of when in practise) and then ph4ntom was the next level up.

But even when the gap isn't that big, the gap is still big enough to get huge score differences. Playing against him myself, sure I've had games where the scores were pretty equal, or even where I had a huge lead on him, but he's just such a quality player that he will play extremily efficiently all the time, and even if you're leading by 10 frags, he will probably come back to win, and in the same vein, if you start badly against him, well, you kinda look at the score and see 18 - 0 and go wtf? and then loose 56 to 0 because you just really don't care.

A game that reminds me of this topic is at the cyber x games, zero4 vs daler on pt4. Now daler was a pretty fucking good pt4 player, but zero4 just got going and the score was well over 50 I believe, you can't really call daler a crap player, but maybe, he is just one step below zero4.

But hey, I'm not defending jamerio, he didn't really have any close games, so he's probably no where near competing in tournaments. I was just arguing the idea that if you lose buy a high score you're crap.... rather, if you lose regularly by high scores you're crap.

I can understand how it would get pretty ugly if he got control from the start and you weren't good enough to get it back. however, it makes no sense that you'd let it get anywhere near 50, if you're any level close to ph4tnom as you claim to have been. for this to happen you would just have to completely give up every game (which would be boring.. why would you keep doing it?), and with that mentality, I don't see how you could ever be a 'good' player to begin with.

Have you ever played any one good, and when I say good I mean reaaallly good? And I don't mean aliased online, I mean at a tournament? You might think it's possible to just keep scores down, sometimes it really just isn't. On ztn it is so easy to go down to a 5 in a row spawn fragging session, and after that your mind is so muddled you can't remember any timings or even where the guy is, meanwhile he's just hunting you down.

Think about how you frag bots, from that atleast you know it's possible to get a whole bunch of spawn frags if you concerntrate. And to be fair, I don't think I ever lost by 50 frags, if I got raped the score would be like 5 to 30, average frags against him over the history of playing him I would guess around 5 to 20, but I clearly remembering him schooling me on ztn in a tourney 7 to 35 or something. (albeit I have food poisoning at the event :P)

our 'top players' don't tend to alias online. I've never been to a tournament. the best players I've played are probably exorcist and elpajuo. (I never did 1v1 much)
I lost both about 30-10 if I recall. (this was Q3, obviously)
trust me man, it's easy to play ztn defensive though if you know what you're doing. I played prodx and blokey on eu servers and only lost like 11-1 and 6-3 or something. not that they were trying (they shouldn't be when I have 120+ ping I guess), but they tried chasing me down a lot and I usually managed to avoid it. if you're thinking hard enough you can avoid getting spawn raped, you know.

Dude I fucking PWNED you BADLY on eu servers. I even beat you with 200 ping in US servers by the same scores. :)

I also thought it might be worthwhile to mention that I had a kind of weakness against him too, I just get too nervous playing him. Guys my level have all done better against him than I have.

I tend to play better against really good players. they give me a challenge and so I sort of give an effort. when I play people I'm confident that I'm better than, I usually don't try.

? He only went to 3 international events, granted he did not do well at ESWC, but he was having problems at the pc he was sitting. At WCG 2001 he finished top 12 and at WCG 2002 he finished 6th I believe.

You have to remember this guy practised against fucking anarki on t4. THAT WAS HIS PRACTISE! That is what I mean when I talk about that quality of player.
