Linux Q4 Client to Windows Server Issue (22 comments)

A friend asked me to post this here:

Windows Quake4 Server Fix

Linux Quake4 clients can only connect to Linux servers. This is because the Windows dedicated servers lack �game100.pk4". It�s an easy fix for server admins, all you have to do is to get the file from here:

game100.pk4
md5sum: 61513eab61e80621c5337bc1a309af01

and put it into your server's q4base directory.

Its called remote desktop but you can connect to console only also if you want.

didn't really understand what is inside this pak file, but looks like it's some linux only stuff. so why would it be needed for windows servers, some client - server data reconciliation? gg engine then.

so what's that "server and client need the same file" stuff good for? was working perfectly fine in Q3, why the fuck do all these stupid games like UT and Q4 require the clients to have all the useless content the server admin uploaded? could hardly be more stupid than this way

It was working fine in Q3 because both servers and clients from both operating system installs had same files. Just an oversight in that the original windows dedicated version (well there isnt one) had a file missing. Once the next patch is out and versions are in sync all should be fine again, but handy workaround for the moment.

I'm not bashing the fact that they missed out a file for one of the server versions, but that you are enforced to have all the files the server has, too. No matter whether they are used or not. What's wrong with the Q3 system where you just needed the stuff that is currently running on the server, why did they have to change that? That's just retarded imo.

Q3 (and afaik Q4) both had the options, you specify which paks you want and are "required". I.e if a server has a map and you don't it will be fine (assuming that map isn't running). Same thing, just that this I assume will be a required file as its a core server file, but it doesn't mean you have to have the same files as the server every time apart from the core ones.

I'm not refering to this server file but e.g. maps in general. Why keep mappers telling the players that every client will need all maps to be able to connect to a server? Must be either the server admins or a stupid and unnecessary thing in the engine. And I assume it's the later one..

hmm, never had any problems on connecting to servers... and i thought windowz server suck anyway (at least they did for doom3 i've heard).

What have you actually changed in the pk4? Not saying the pk4's dodgy, but anyone can post something with an md5 checksum and say install this, it fixes everything! :-)
