In a surprise announcement today, Id Software unveiled plans for a new title to be developed in cooperation with Splash Damage, the team responsible for Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory. The game looks set to provide similar game mechanics to that offering, with "strategic team play" and "persistent character promotions" mentioned in today's press release. The game will also feature "over 40 conventional and futuristic vehicles". Intriguingly, the title will make use of the previously unheard of Megatexture rendering technology, currently in development by Id. This new engine seems to be much more epic (Epic?) in scope than previous Id productions as it supposedly "crunches millions of polygons and a gigabyte-scale texture into a single, seamless and un-tiled landscape with unique detail down to the square inch or the un-obscured distant horizon".
