For an 11 year old he is awesome, I have to say this. But against an average European he would not do well.

Against the "average" euro player he would own. Against the top players, nope...he got nice overall skills but not top nodge from what I saw from 2 of the demos listed. The other dude from Japan has absolutley not one chance in hell tho...

But geeez, hes eleven, I bet that he will be one of the best in any game in a couple of years if he continues to evolve.

People seem to be assuming that an 11 year old shouldn't be good. Traditional sports depends on physical prowess; online games don't so there's not necessarily any reason why you shouldn't be very good at age 11. Most 11 year olds don't get a chance to compete with the best - so we simply don't know how good they might be given a chance.

Kids these days grow up playing computer games right from the start. But this is something that didn't happen a few years ago - so we're not really yet in a situation to judge what ages are best for playing on line games.

Incidentally - my 8 year old son plays Tribes2 with me and is ok - not super-leet, but he plays in clan matches with me and is as good as a lot of other clanned players. He used to play UT2003 on the CB 2v2 ladder with me and we won a few matches.

11 year old kids are not fit to compete with older players - both mentally and physically.

How do you know? Anyone can go around making assertions like that but without any evidence it pretty pointless. How many 11 year old have had a chance to compete? If there were as many 11 year olds as 20 year old taking part in online games maybe they'd prove to be better. I'm not saying I believe this would be the case - I just don't know - and frankly nor does anyone else.

Well working at a LAN cafe we get all ages playing, and the main reason why 10-14 years old aren't really very good is due to the fact that they don't like losing. One minute they will be owning a UK2 cs server, then they come play me in a 1 v 2 on de_aztec and I own them, so they /quit the server and don't say anything else. All down to maturity

Children at that age still have a very much undeveloped nervous system, which is responsible for movement coordination and reaction time (both very important elements in gaming). Your nervous system stops developing at 18 (which means you don't improve physically after 18) and that should theoretically be the best age to game.

Well - a bit of googling suggests it's not a terribly understood area. Some cognitive tasks are know to start deteriorating from very early ages. For example our ability to aquire language drops off fast with age; people are much better able to learn new languages in the first few years of life than later on.

Rection time is known to improve a bit through to your late 20s and then deterioate from your 40s onwards - but there is a lot of variation amongst individuals. The effect is also greater for more complex reaction tasks; and varies according to the kind of stimulus. For some tests at least young children can perform better than those in their late teens and 20s. Also the variation in such things seem to be pretty small when comparing children with young adults compared with the deteriation that occurs as people reach old age.

Also individuals can learn to respond better in particular kinds of reaction tests, and it's not well understood how the ability to condition yourself in this way varies with age.

As someone else suggested - I think one plausible reason for youngsters not to be good is they tend to like to win - and become easily discouraged when losing. It takes maturity live with short term disappoinment of losing becuase you understand that by losing against good competitors is how you improve. Young kids live very much for the moment - they haven't yet realised that pain today can mean gain tomorrow.

As for the rest, I have been taught about the development of the human organism with respect to the abilities that come in handy when doing sports (I've taken a course for a judo instructor). It has been scientifically studied and as far as the attributes needed in gaming go I can tell you that it's what I said was all true.

Well - feel free to post references to papers supporting what you say - I spent little time skimming the web to see what I could find and, as I suggested above it doesn't appear to be as cut and dry as you suggest.

(Incidentally I used to teach Tai Kwon Do - but I'm not sure how such experience is relevant to this discussion).

More relevant perhaps ... I do have a doctorate in theoretical computer science from Oxford and hence have some training in critically reading scientific literature. If it has been well studied and the question is easily answered then there will be a wealth of literature supporting this.

I'm not saying I disbelieve you.. just that it takes a little more than unsupported assertion (however many times repeated :-)) before I'll accept something as fact.

The papers are in Polish and refer to the theory of sportive training, lectured by serious professors at the Academy of Physical Education in Warsaw. There is really no use arguing about it very much, it may be the case that we are both wrong to some extent.

May be true, but remember that physical height means longer way for signals to travel and to reach their destinations. So theoretically, a small sized kid with shorter nerve lines, should have better reactiontime then an adult with longer ones, the connection has actually been proven scientiffically(?). (though not the kid/adult situation, but with nerves in general)

Why nerves continue to develop until are adults is simply to keep up with physical growth.

The brain has also finished growing after the age of 5 (afaik), and thus it's just as usable as a 18 year old.
(Nerve endings and stuff like memory and the abillity to learn is still developing though).

Imo, a kid can be physically as fit as any other player when it comes to gaming, however the abillity to plan ahead and to cope with loss and pressure is still underdeveloped.
Though the potentional to learn is enormous, so starting early will surely benefit the individual imo.

While your nervous system still develops it could be trained to respond faster (because it develops - doh). Your reaction time could still improve, this is what I mean.

i wouldn't look at the nervous system that much, imo opinion the keypionts are experience and practice - if you've played fps-games for 5 years, you've without doubt a big advantage (if they're the 'right' fps-games, such as the quake-series) over your unexperienced opponent.

I don't think that it's the physical thingie which gives you an edge over your opponent to such a great extent, given the fact that the opponent is also a 'pro-gamer'/used to gaming...

Its possible but I still think its unlikely for someone that age to become a really top player. My brother first played FPS games at age 10, he wasn't bad played in clan matches with me and some lan games at home with me and friends and could take some of my friends down. Thing is that while he had the reflexes and coordination for some great aim and he is pretty smart for his age (inc. being a v. good chess player) he just couldn't wrap it together as a whole. He certainly improved a quite a bit a few years later, the skills weren't different , just his decision making process improved.

a "normal" top player he doesn't really fit the role,
thinking about his age made me think that he

i saw the demo, preeety nice skillz for a 11 year-old, but... he's no gitz... he's aim is just good, timing the same, can't say much about nerves, the demo i saw he was in control all of the time, so can't tell how he can handle pressure, but... don't think he really has a chance... even @ top 16 :)

Age... it's not age itself, it is how the organism is developed.

I think the term 'exception' would be fitting in GitzZz's case, and even more with this kid.

Of course there are people whose organisms develop in a different way, for example faster. Martina Hingis was 15 or 16 when she started winning big tournaments, Pele was 17 when he his the limelight. I agree that players can be very good at the age of 16 or even 15 but all I am saying that their reactions can still improve until their organisms stop developing.

I was competing at a top 6 UK level at quake 2 when i was about 11-12.

Got crap from some people, lot of people i met at the euroquake tournament were suprised at my age... but still i was pretty good at duel and able to play in one of the uks top clans at the time (NME).

pcgaming world mag even took my pic for the magazine and put it in the central page, probs mainly because they were suprised how young i was:D

as for NME being a top squad - we were okay but never really 'leet' enough - left that to the likes of CS, FED, KING and UNR - others too but they were the main ones - we were the top 'nice' clan - and had the best keyboard-only quaker in the world (yes they did used to exist) - in a guy named Warforge - saw the dude get 100% efficiency in one game despite that handicap and being an HPB - and on one of the most 'vertical' q2 maps 'tokays towers' :)

Carmac, cooller has been dominating the scene, he started out shitty at eswc but by his final game, his moment was back, and his aim was right on, if you watch some of his earlier games in the round robins and shit, and compare it to his last game, it is nothing like the same, he isnt getting better, he hardly ever plays, i doubt he even trained for this tournament more then a few days, same with unkind

Honestly I think the 'luck factor' is extremely excaggerated anyways. And it's really easy to blame anyways; short example:

For 14 minutes and 50 seconds the duel was going normally (skill > luck as it should, sorry zulg :), but your opponent was already catching up on you as control shifted a few minutes ago, and with a 1-frag lead you turn your shieldgun on, aim it just a few degrees too high and your opponent aimed his LG at your left foot (don't ask). He hit you, killed you, tied the score and spawnraped you for the win.

Now even while there was nothing wrong (just a minor error you could have prevented), you *think* you lost the game due to bad luck (buggy shieldgun, arc hit from lg or something), and instantly promote that 'fact' and excaggerate it. Those who also like to criticize the game start to believe you, and the effect is that guys like you who didn't play the game (much) always hear this stuff about 'luck'. While honestly, I don't believe the luck factor is so predominant as most people claim.

Could be just me, because I didn't play the game on pro-level either (naturally). But I think it's stuff like the above example which led to this.

I have to completely disregard all of Carmac's "age" comments, especially when I see these prodigies (I'm talking like ages 6 to 11) who can belt out 1 Million perfect notes of a symphony piece on the piano. That takes coordination, endurance, and reaction.

However, I would agree that maybe at age 11 their actual playing strategies may not be as "up to par" as older players.

I read that the brain stops growing at age 9. And if you learn to play an instrument before you are 9 your brain actually gets bigger by like 3% for each avrage practise h/day. I recon all activities that requier as much skill has same effect.
