Mechanical keyboards is yesterdays news. The pro's use an fibre opticle cable as a link between their brains and the computer.
That's why so many of them have the keyboards in their lap, so none is to know about it.

Most pros don't use them, no; i'm not even sure how much knowledge most of them have on the subject. Although mechanical is much better on most fronts (and boards such as the Filco Majestouch are NKRO, meaning you can press as many keys as you want without fucking up the matrix) they are also stupidly expensive. Most people hardly need them.

For me, I have a Model M from 1993 sitting under my bed, far too loud for my night-time-online-time and so i'm on a 1998 Compaq board with ALP switches which are pretty nice. However i'd recommend you to buy a Filco board if you want something nice to type on, as well as offering you a new experience with a mechanical board. Most rubber domed keyboards will do just find for most people, but i am noticing that gaming companies (razer/ss) are making their boards mechanical now too. Over priced, as usual, but mechanical none the less.

Who knows? I'm saving for a FILCO board now and will get one when i return to college. For more info read up at geekhack i guess.

ive been thinking about getting a cherry g80-3000.

am not sure yet which type i should get. im leaning towards the linear feedback model, tho im not sure if that one is suited for gaming. i've read somewhere that it is, and also that it is not as loud as the other two models.

do you have any details on that?

From what I can find, the board is Cherry MX Blues which aren't really suited for gaming. It's personal though, I used my model M for 2 months while gaming alot iirc. For games black and brown are best. Would you be buying that board from china/jp?

there are actually 3 different versions, the one i was reading about, and tending towards is the one using black switches (linear feedback, as i said in my previous post).

would you agree with what i've read then? saying that the keyboard would be suitable for gaming?

i use a cherry g80-3000 with black switches... i like it but it doesn't have nkro.

i'm unsure if linear switches are that much better for fps though, used to play with a keytronic for years...

Many are using Steelseries boards which have Cherry MX Black mechanical switches.

Keyboard choice is up to preference, unless you need n-key rollover, which you don't.

Yeah there are combinations that "lock" it. I liked the feel, but couldn't play with it because certain jumps became impossible.
And it was not that durable either..

really nice keyboard, many of my friends use it, i have one too but after playing painkiller years ago space doesnt work :PPP (jump xD) now i use cheap noname keyboard with normal keys and its also ok. best keyboard i ever used was in my school, also noname, keys were something between flat and normal .

The day logitech stops producing these they will go for loads of cash on eBay, so keep yours safe!

No point really is there? May as well just buy a cheaper more reliable mechanical than fork out so much for a mechanical that is branded as SS. The board is good, sure, but not at that price. A FILCO board will preform better, and last you longer.

Filco boards that I found were just as/more expensive though.

My point is that it's a 'gaming keyboard' that is actually decent, and mechanical.

The SteelSeries 6G V2 is actually pretty cheap for a mechanical keyboard or at least cheaper than comparable Filco keyboards.

Was a bit hard to get used after my old Logitech, otherwise it's pretty good. Wonder why none of those "gaming" keyboards are ergonomical.

Keyboards are more about personal comfort than anything else. Always blows though, when you can't use more than a few keys simultaneously.

I use a Filco with no numpad and MX Cherry Brown switches. I am obviously pro because I am Anonymous.

Next week I am goin to US , I am goin to buy Filco keyboard with Brown switches... however still wonder if it will be a good choice. I am not pro player, I play some FPS from time to time, mainly CSS , I use keyboard in daily work - office/graphic design/programming. What do u think ? Which switches ? I personally love my Topre Realforce. They are not mechanical, and they are VERY expensive and I wouldn't recommend them to guys just using keyboards for gaming, but I think they are very comfortable if you heavily type. Would be best if you can try one out since they do cost alot.

maybe cause you still have to have a regular keyboard and those microkeyboards arent that cheap either. Throw in a few more bucks and u can get a keyboard with cherry brown/black/blue switches which are also great for typing, unlike those rubber-dome-membrane-switch-squishy-mushy cheap keyboards.

But if you already have a good keyboard, those programmable microkeyboards seem to be a nice option to have. You're probably gonna bottom out the keys when playing games and wouldnt care how the keystrokes feel.

I'm a huge fan of scissor switches (laptop style keys) so there aren't many kb's to chose from. After using a lycosa and having it die after a year, I went with a logitech illuminated and love it to death. Great kb if you like scissor switches. And yes, it works well for gaming.

What are some good small keyboards? With huge mousepads nowadays it gets really annoying space wise, but I don't want to get a smaller pad so I need a smaller kb. The point is getting rid of stupid space like the numpad which i never use. For example:

Yep. So far, the only option I see is the A4Tech one i mentioned. Looks simple, small and efficient. The only thing that worries me is if that's going to be some of these keyboards that get fucked up when you press more than 3 keys at once.

It's true it won't increase kro, for example it will still fail with ASX, QWE (which kind of matters for quake) or ABN (or something like that) on those "gaming optimized keyboards" (which are still 2kro), but it will allow using more key combos.

It would be totally new to me that PS/2 affects the working combinations (as long as you don't hit the USB-Limitation) because it depends on the "keyboard heardware" and not the connection.

on my experience it works.
It obviously relies on hardware itself, for example a "gaming keyboard" will not work better when using a ps/2 port because of the diodes. (actually most probably it won't work at all or only lights would), except getting rid of usb port max key limit (which also has an exception in ms x4 because it modifies windows configuration. I think it is about 26kro, not nkro).

If the keyboard uses a shitty grid you won't get more out of it using ps/2. ( even though it's technically way better than usb )

Well my current logitech ps2 keyboard costed me 5€ and never had any problem. Let's hope 12€ are worth it.

Couple of shops which have the Arvo and X6, but those are not cheap keyboards and not as compact as this A4Tech KB.

For me my Filco tenkeyless offers me enough more space compared to the SS 7G I had before.

For me the Filco (or similar size) is compact enough, otherwise I would have bought a Deck 82-key, but I can understand if you want an even smaller keyboard.

Honestly, it's kinda dumb if you are not a programmer or writer or something. They get full of shit in between the keys and it's a pain the ass to clean. I would rather spend 10€ on a keyboard that does the job, and but another in a year instead of cleaning all the shit, risking you may broke a key or somthing when you are removing them for maximun cleaning. It's cheaper and more higienic to buy a new one.

I just prefere mechanical over rubber domes, I wouldn't call that dumb allthough it might not be economical. ;)

I don't see the problem in cleaning between the keys and I don't fear to break a key by pulling the keycaps.

I dislike how it's almost a binary choice in the keyboard market; you either spend $5 on any entry level rubber dome keyboard or you jump up to the mechanical where even the cheapest are around $100.

I'm quite sure that mechanical keyboards are superior, but I personally can't justify the investment. If I was a programmer or typed a lot I probably would though.

There are guides to buying kbs for what you want (which are blatantly copied from geekhack) so you don't have to spend $150 in a filco in order to have nkro or black cherries, but in the end quality comes with a price.

Also about gaming, which is what the OP is about: kbs don't matter for gaming at all, and actually a mech keyboard could be worse for that use. When you buy a good kb what you want is mostly key feel, and being tenkeyless/small.

Well theoretically mechanical kb lasts longer for sure (like >3 tims key strokes life than rubber kb).
IMO kb doesn't improve gaming level (maybe for some ppl a tiny little bit, but really could be ignored), however it improves gaming experience. They do feel much better than normal kb. So if some one prefers spending money on mechanical kb to let his fingers feels better I won't be surprised.
