1v1: 20 MLG credits cost $12.99 x 128 players = $1662.72 with $600 in prizes means 36% of the entry fee goes into the prize pool.

4v4: 20 MLG credits cost $12.99 x 4 players x 64 teams = $3325.44 with $1200 in prizes means 36% of the entry fee goes into the prize pool.

Poker tournament organizers would love numbers like these.

edit - I wonder if iD will support this after they didn't help the crazy quakeliveladders guy when he wanted to create mini-tournaments with cash entry fees (and he would keep a portion of the money collected).

Also someone hasn't been paying attention to NA leagues if they think it is possible to get 64 CA teams to register. Heck I'd even say 128 1v1 players would be hard in NA; the first round would be full of no show FF wins.

edit - for example, gamebattles own 4v4 ladder has 0 ranked teams and the 1v1 ladder has 6 ranked players.

Gamebattles was never advertised, no one was really in it. I think me and Tilter were the only 'Quake' players who knew about it at all.

Anyway, I'd say they shouldn't have a problem getting about 20-30 teams, and I'd estimate about 80 1v1'ers join.

I like how you use the word "advertised" - it's as if you think there is a significant player base someone could advertise to.

edit - The most successful QL league in NA, QuakeNight, had just over 20 teams signup for CA. Team inactivity has been a major issue in the league with (guessing off the top of my head) 1/5 matches being a FF.

I admire what GotFrag is trying to do. However, If you're a website like GotFrag (mostly CS, Wow coverage) why would you make a pay-to-play tournament to introduce yourself to QuakeLive players? Especially considering the prize pool to prize winnings ratio is garbage as x-foo noted.

Why would you have it setup for 128 people? Isn't 64 a bit more realistic for a USA only tournament.

I'm sure the NGL would host a 128 player tourney if the community wanted a 100% fee to prize pool ratio. There's no reason to settle for 36% of fee going toward the pool.

The community doesn't want this anyway...

Conclusion: superfluous and destined to fail unless it changes completely.

God forbid a company should actually try and make a profit. Let's all go play in the ESWC. Oh wait...they didn't put a sustainable model in place and are sadly gone. On the other hand, MLG will pay the prizes out, will provide adequate coverage and have actually built a platform for Halo 3 in America (as much as people want to ignore that).

How many people actually care that it's only 36% going into a prize pool? Only a handful of people going to win anyway...To be honest, I would prefer more % myself, but spread out to top 8 / 16 winning. Also, 20 Credits is hardly a ripoff by any stretch of the imagination.

Funny how only the top 2 players in the 1vs1 tourney make more than they would in a free play for fun tournament. The expenses for the people finishing 3rd and 4th is the same as it would be for a free tourney while everyone else just loses money. Don't understand why anyone would sign up for such a tournament when you can get the same amount of fun from a free tourney.

I'm the leader of one of the most active CA clans in North America right now... they're shutting up the people they were hoping would join.

Here's what I said in #18:

Teams aren't going to participate in this. There are plenty of free competitions currently meeting the community's needs (most notably www.QuakeNight.com and www.nationalgamingleague.org). No team is going to pay $50+ to sign up for a tournament with a 64% rake.

I'm actually surprised this is legal, and I hope it gets shut down by id, just like that quakeliveladders.com thing.

Even though the entry fee/payout ratio is seen as pretty bad, I would still love to see these tourneys get attention to help quake take the spotlight instead of all of the other games nowadays that take little to no skill. Sure it may seem pretty expensive and not worth it at first but if the game was to make it onto the mlg pc circuit then there would finally be a good number of lan events instead of just 1 quakecon a year. I think these tourneys are just a test to see how many numbers they can get and if it would be worth it to add to their lineup in the future. Thats probably why they only did it in USA also, because their tourneys are based only in the USA at this time.

The american quakers get the tournaments they deserve. It's not like euros magically spawn cups here and there, it takes people to run them too :)

Could have been great, shame the costs don't weigh up against the prize money. Also a shame is that it is being ran by people who have their heads in a place that never sees the daylight and that they fail to listen to the community by deleting their comments. Other than that, good job!

Seriously, so many fucking idiots have nothing better to complain about. We shouldn't even know the amount of profit, most businesses hide that for a reason. Suck it up, allow e-sports to grow and accept new models.

Any business that tries to hide their profit is probably trying to scam the public. If you're an honest business you would have no qualms discussing the costs / profit amounts with customers.

I'm all for companies making money but a rake that huge is not reasonable.

Go talk to McDonalds or Levis and I'm sure they'd LOVE to tell you those numbers.
