If your money isn't too short you should go to a country for vacation (the ones you're considering as your new home). And stay at friends who show you around. Of course you can't get to see the lifestyle in just a few days, besides everyone can live a different one. Even England could be cool, although the food is so greasy (you can still buy and eat the stuff you're used to ^^).

It's kinda childish to think of moving out according to ur musical taste or gaming preferences due to it being a VERY complex decision that will definitely change your life. In the motherland u taking in all it's peculiarity since u're a child and your brains become used to all the things going around exactly in a local way. It reflects on all spheres: from people personalities to a way of living. Time goes by and it's becoming harder and harder to move off with your mind slowly losing it's flexibility in adaptation.

i'd recommend amsterdam or stockholm - at least for a week or two to go and do some partying
personally i'm not a huge fan of cities that big to live in - i live in a "small" 200.000 inhabitants city in germany which is just the right size - frankfurt is a 20minutes trainride away (~40km) and if its summer you can be at the beach in holland (or amsterdam for that matter) within 3 or-so hours by car

*edit* oh and we have like 4 or 5 decent clubs in town (mainly electro) which attrackt even people from frankfurt (which is big and has quite some "legendary" techno/electro clubs like sven väth's "cocoon club" or the "u60311")

I would try an english speaking country (Ireland / England) before moving to a country with a different language. It's much harder than it looks.

Gaming and music should be the last motivations to leave, imo. I also remember a Swede Torzean(or something like that) complain about his 40ms ping while others get 10. I am not sure but I doubt everywhere you get these 'lan pings'. Besides that which European country would you want to go live in?

I would be a lot more concerned about job availability and getting a job before worrying what pings ill get.

I understand what you mean, but quite frankly, gaming and music (going to clubs/raves if they were GOOD) is something I'd want to do a lot, and can't do here. I'm not moving because I'd get lower pings, I'm moving because Europe's personality is closer to mine. I'm thinking if it's possible, to move there for 6-12 months, and maybe see if I like it. I'd obviously work during the time there, it's extremely unrealistic to not do that and live there. Worst case scenario is that I just move back.

Well, Europeans are into a lot of electronica, there's a lot more clubs like that, more events for that kind of music, nightlife, etc. I wouldn't mind going to a LAN center every once in a while to play with some people, there's tons of them there too. Toronto pretty much only has Korean LAN places with terrible PC's and only SC. (Not that there's anything wrong with Starcraft).

So yeah, does that make sense? I'm an outgoing person when it comes to that kind of stuff. It's just no Canada, it's North America really.

It's more about having lots of differences, extremes and choices. I for one don't care that much for electronica (except when clubbing and the location is fun) and I have never been to a LAN centre, nor do I know where on is.

You should come to Europe for the possiblities and not for specific things. Because if you only look for certain things you might never really find them.

Coming back to your reasons for moving, gaming you should forget about ENTIRELY. Even if you are still playing games in a year from now you certainly won't be giving them the same time you are now if you're in a different country because YOU'LL BE OUTSIDE EXPLORING THE NEW COUNTRY YOU ARE LIVING IN.

The second point music I think is another weak spot in your planning. You live in Canada which is a hell of a lot closer to the US than it is to EU, and guess what! Most of, if not all great electronic artist tour the US relentlesly. And another thing, being a massive electronic music fan myself (prog/tech/house) I must say the idea of wishing to move to a city so that you can experience the music live I assume, is rather silly.

I've been listening to electronic music now for nearly 7 years and the longer I listen to it the more and more I start to avoid clubs like the fucking black death. Let's run down the list as to why listening to electronic music at a live venue is often shit.

1) Cover charge - downloading is cheaper
2) The dumb gurning cunt's around you falling into you because they're too fucked to walk - no druggos in your living room.
3) Over priced drinks - alcohol is cheaper at home, also there is no risk of being kicked out for being drunk.
4) Lines. LINES. LINES.
5) Transport to and fro the venue - living room -> bedroom = much shorter

Don't get me wrong, if someone I really love comes to my City (Sydney) such as Booka Shade which I saw on Saturday, then I will make the effort and go to see them. Other than that I have wonderful speakers/headphones and a torrent account + newmixes.com (best site ever.)

I missed my friends and my girlfriend terribly and Europe didn't really impress me at all to be honest. Although I do plan to go back there with my girlfriend to see what I missed out on. During my trip I went to: London (2nd time for me), Barcelona, Madrid, Sans Sebastian, Paris and Amsterdam. Yeah they were great, especially Sans Sebastian, my highlight, but at the end of the day I had no mates and no girlfriend to have sex with. These are the things that matter.

I think people took the multiculturalism comment too far. Basically, I'd want to be in a city with Europeans, so I could meet the people in the country of where I'm living. For example, if you want to meet Canadians, you wouldn't go to a place like Toronto, since it's mostly immigrants from other countries, like China, India, and other countries. Sure, they could TECHNICALLY be Canadians, but they came from another country.

If people want to meet Canadians, I tell them to go to another city, like Montreal. There is mostly Canadians, people who haven't immigrated, etc.

About being robbed, that does not happen if you're careful. Neither me nor my family has been robbed, tho there were a few attempts. Try living there. An opinion or two is all fine and dandy for a long visit, some sort of traveling but living is totally different. If you talk to people who live there and have done for long periods of time (or life) you'll find a good majority of them will say they dislike it and not recommend it.

whereever you go, people are pretty conservative around here. there is this "we never amount to anything" attitude. that's probably because we really never amount to anything. at least not in terms of power or influence in the world. so i think there is a little more depressive mood around here

Why not try cities a little closer to home? Toronto, Montreal, Chicago, Seattle, Portland, OR depending on where in CA you live. I'm not saying people don't up and leave where they're from when they're young and move to another country and love it right off but you have to consider the first 3-6 months being an adjustment period. Being alone, in a country that speaks a language foreign to your own hundreds or thousands of miles away from where you grew up can be quite daunting.

Not saying you shouldn't consider it but you have to be somewhat practical.
