Have you ever seen one of those guys who hangs around near train stations, looking nerdy and writing down the details of the different trains that go by? No, me either, but you know the type. Kinda quirky people with a weird hobby, you don't really think they're stupid, it's just kinda fun to laugh at/with them about it.

Well that's how we all feel about UT players. We don't actually think your game is the worst game in history. We actually think it's almost interesting. It's just you're all so nerdy and defensive about it, it makes it so easy for us to laugh at/with you.

I'm sorry if being the online gaming equivalent of a nerdy trainspotter is upsetting to you, maybe you should try playing a game that isn't slow, spammy and boring.

Yep, this is my impression too, Q3ers are really fussy about Q3 and hate upon the UT series whenever they can. In my experience, most UT players have played Q3 too, and have been very open towards it, but just find UT more fun.

I've tried to start a nerdy and defensive trend for UT, but it doesn't seem to catch on :(

It's actually pretty good so far :( Sorry..

Really beefy feel to it.. fast too. It's got some kind of arcade appeal. At first I was sceptical about the new dodge, but it fits nicely into the rhythm. The minigun is nice, the "enforcer" is nice, the sniper is nice.

Right now public is pretty random ofc, so it's a bit like playing against (decent) bots.. the "real" gameplay won't be seen for a while until people get skilled I guess..

Scored 9 on the systemscore and am running it in 1600x1200 @ 60 fps.

this is coming from a guy that didnt really rate utk4, after playing ut2k3 in eso and nationscup etc, this game is truely amazing, its fast paced, and certanly does have a wider feel with large maps, the movement is just perfect, it really is ut mixed with ut2k4, even the vehicles feel well, if this game doesnt create a Quake / UT devide again like in 99 i dont know what will, it certainly will become a decent esport game thats for sure, bet me any money if u have doubts.

I have to agree, it feels much better than UT2 so far at least, and definitely more funky than anything Quake. But I want:

- low latency servers
- tweaked gfx
- more experienced opponents
- lower playerlimits on servers
- optional smaller maps

All of which seem resolvable. At this point it is a bit spammy because of so many inexperienced players.

also im on core 2 quad q6600 and it can run easily at good frames on the highest settings, however i have still dropped all the textures to lowest and the res 1024 x 768 as im a frames whore.

I don't agree, UT2 was way slower :) Takes longer time to kill people in UT2, and maps were scaled bigger. This is a significantly better game than UT2 imo.. let's see how it holds up in the long run.

The in-fights in Quake in which both players were stacked fully on health and armor were usually the most exciting to watch because they lasted long enough for you to really appreciate the dodging and aiming, the juggling for position etc.

BAM-DEAD-NEXT gets boring fast. It seems so anonymous. The situations in which you were up close and personal with your opponent, locked in intense struggle for survival, were also the most exciting ones from a player's perspective. You need time to feel the heat of the fight before it's over. And I found that was mostly the case when both players were stacked and didn't die too fast.

you increment by one.. ok? by 1! you can't even set that correctly.

the console is fucking useless.. it doesn't even have command completion and has a poor amount of commands.

if i'd want to change a bind/sensitivity i have to go through all those menus back again putting me off from the game, instead just typing a quick command in the console..

the video/hud/input settings are a joke. like.. i think they really, really tried not to confuse those dolts playing this shit.

you can't even bind TAB to a function ffs

it's just a tweak like picmip, called lodbias in UT. Dunno if it boosts fps in UT3 though (it did in ut1 but not in ut2k3/4).

And btw you can use console for a lot of things you just need to know the commands (ofcourse not to such an extent as Q3), but if you put someone behind a q3 console that doesn't know shit about q3 he wouldn't come far aswell. So lets be fair on that point :)

I agree, the mouse sensitivity was completely hopeless, feels like they don't let gamers test their games at all during development.

Anyway, it's only a beta, and all Quake games' server browsers and config interfaces have sucked ass (console-style) too. If I'm not mistaken, at least one of Q3 and Q4 have this lame step system for mouse sens too and you have to go to the ini to edit it properly.

The config files here can be found at My Documents / My Games / UT3 etc .. and are pretty self explanatory and about 1.000.000 times more organized than Q3's =P

The most limiting for me now is without a doubt not getting (into) proper servers.. I've so far only gotten small snippets of play against good players on low latency..

I've tried more :
weapons have better settings (rox are speed and usefull now, link is great too, etc.. ), though minigun is still lame (instant hit weapon mass spam on primary fire, and very accurate)
impact hammer jump is cool, though it's maybe harming too much
there is not really any rocket jump

like in the 2004 I find the lap of time between two dodges too long
I would have liked a more nervous/speed game

ONS (warfare) will surely be fun, vehicules are improved like weapons. scorpion isn't lame anymore, got a cool speed boost ; I thought manta would be bad, slow, too nerfed, but it seems ok
you can now fire while driving the hellbender. but this vehicule seems very slow now

invisibility is damn invisible

surfing is cool to move around, but any shoot and you fall (like 2sec to stand up) ; don't like that
tricks seems badly done (animation, kind of tricks), I don't like this gimmick so far

got a 7600gt, e6300@3ghz : medium setting@1024*768 I got too much pov latency
I've set low details@800*600 and it was good ; but the game looks fucking ugly x)
gonna try to set it better later

servers are shit atm (from france), 100ms ping mini, laggy
I wonder if there is they are even dedicated server, I guess not cause it was awfull. but if this is it, why isn't there already decent dedicated servers ?
edit : maybe the sorting list bug in the server browser Aquashark is talking about ; didn't launch the game to verify yet

menus are a bit incomplete
didn't find how to spectate also

with my comp half year old (E6600, 8800GTS, 2gb PC6400) I run the game on 1280x1024 @ max details and 122 fps (I set the fps cap for 122 fps... dno how much higher it can get but I'd assume it can do 150 without further problems, atleast I never had any fps drops in the vctf map with 11 bots in).

Consoles are outdated hardware tbh, simply because you can't upgrade in the same way as you can with pcs.

I liked UT 2003 despite not playing it a huge amount, visually this is what I'd expect for a UT game though which is good looks and nice and smooth. Nothing new on the weapon front, that sucks.

The movement however feels like a bad joke to me. I'm slow moving, I feel as fat as anything with my one foot in the air mini-jumps and yet strafing is insanely fast by comparisson. I certainly can't play this with the movement as it is.

Bit of a let down tbh.

d3 was a great solo game. You can't compare it to a multiplayers one.

q4 was shit out of the box (even if I liked the solo adventure xDxD), but it's really not that bad ATM, better than q3 for 1on1 & competition gaming to me.

UT2003/4 weren't bad, but because of too much of everything, they didn't really fit competition gaming... Q3 was more simple, and more adapted to 1337 g4ym0rZ. Then let's compare the movements... ;-)

Anyway, we will see what will happen to UTIII, but to me, it's more of a casual game than anything now... Not saying that it's bad, but competitive gamers aren't casual so...

Well , I must say that I really love this game and it is in fact my new game that I am going to play from now on. I didn't expect it to be good, but it is. It's not on ly good but it's by far the best DM game out. Movement is plenty fast. And remember you dumbasses said q4 was slow compared to q3 but I spent the time to learn it and can move faster in q4 than ANYONE can move in q3. Movement has tricks right off the bat and Im sure more time in will yield more speed.

It wasnt slow, YOU just did not know how to move. In q3 you strafe jump to accelerate, in q4 you strafe jump and crouch slide around corners to accelerate. Its a new skill for a new game. "(air control for poor people)" I can't agree here :). Crouch slide isn't as "powerful" as air control, and you can maintain the forward key so... And you need pretty decent speed, you can't slide effectively without having straffed a bit before...
For me crouch sliding is really something new & fresh to the "quakes movement history" and imho it fits q4's gameplay better due to the "slow" weapons switches etc...
Oh and also, you can't gain speed only with crouch sliding.

of course dodge and double jump are there and bunnyhopping as well. theres also a slight bit of air strafing to accelerate so itll just take a little time to get the opimum mouse movements down.
If you bunnyhop with q1 bunnyhop mousemovements you move in a zig zag pattern pretty fast. do 2 mousemovements per jump and that changes. WHat am I the only one who tries bunnyhopping, wall strafing etc with every new game?

You can remove the FPS cap by changing some lines in BaseEngine.ini...

bSmoothFrameRate=TRUE
MinSmoothedFrameRate=22
MaxSmoothedFrameRate=62

Change "62" to1000000 or something like that and your fps is unlocked, viola.

Also.. in the console > "stat fps" to show fps and "fov number" to change FoV.

I personally enjoyed the game. Why they included the Darkwalker even in the duelmap beats me but that's a minor nitpick.

The framerate is solid, the weapons are solid, the movement is solid and it sure felt polished for being a beta demo.

It's going to take a quite some time to get used to UT once again but I bet it'll be worth it.

after short 2h testing i compare to ut2k4 which was my fav ut so far:

weapons are better gfx designed, and i like the handling more (rl, shaft fe.)

movement is overall worse : it is better ! in general, but the missing dodgejump somehow steals a technical jumping and fast manoevering (or am i missing another technique in here =!=!?)

engine seems to be stable, only its alittle bit too slow which i expected after the bioshock demo. but comparing to the speed of the old engine when it was released its nearly ok.
-> the bad thing is that the gfx compared to the hardware demands is not good enough.

the bots seem to be good and similar behavior.
menues are good, but atm not very complete (only few possible settings)

overall familiar quality like in the past, but needs some improvements.
i highly suggest minimum a mutator mod with adding the big dodgejump, tbh i demand it as default - the movement lacks detail. many more gfx tweaks in the menue like all lightning off, less polygons ...

the configs are editable, i removed the 62fps lock for testing and some other stuff.
(4000+ gf6800gt - 35-75fps - low detail)

- menu is a pile of shit, ut2004's is much better
- I dont like movement , though jumpboots and hammerjump are quite nice
- the game runs well on my machine (90-50 fps c2d 2.4, x1950 xt)
- overall feel improves much when you disable bobbing and landing viewshake
- bio feels quite overpowered, other weapons are ok
- flak secondary has still this random chunks flying around :<<<
- maps are a joke for 1on1/tdm
- there is some kind of brightskins in the game, but they arent really bright enough
- weaponswitching should be much shorter (like ut2k4)

so far, I think the game is ok, it could turn out really good with some changes

ok, ok.. the game is not that bad. had quite some FFA fun.
the pace is decent once you get used to spamming strafe keys.

but it somehow feels incomplete/lacking/rehashed. it was overhyped way out of proportion.
plus the menus, options and interface are horrible.

it's just to not have to write UT2003/UT2004 all the time.... they both start with "UT2" and they are basically the same game; the second in the series.

UT2(00x)'s stats were inflated by bots, if I'm not mistaken.. that's what I meant, I don't think UT2(00x) was ever that popular in relation to UT1 / Q3 as your graph shows..

It runs as well as any hl2 game.that is with 2 gigs of high speed rama nd a 3.6 ghz prescott understand/ . ut3 is the first game out that the 6800 GT cannot handle fully. time to upgrade or stick to tf2. If I remember correctly though you did not like tfc when we tried to play so you probably will not like tf2 either since it;s the same type of game, although less spammy.

As I missed GC due to a Carcrash like 1500 meters from my home that made the so intended "UT3"-Day the "Broken Car, Hospital and Pain"-Day, I was really disappointed when I read carmacs view on UT3 - "dead horse - go for TF2"-stuff.

So Today I finally had the demo of the game that I've been waiting for for more than two years now, and what can I say about it... it's UT, that's obvious from the start, but it's also more.

The removal of dodgejumping but keeping of walljumping will give duel-games a real new touch in close maps while it is not really an important aspect in the two large DM maps included in the demo and double-jumping, as my teammate alien put it so right, has become a move needed in special occasions but not a general way of moving.

The movement in general doesn't necessarily feel faster but combined with the lack of the shield gun and the higher gravity (which btw feels more like quake than ut99), the game IS faster.

While I as a UT player for more than 7 years have problems to judge whether I really love this game or only kind of like it very much, I think that it is not totally unlikeable for players of other fast-paced FPS... the rocket-launcher feels a bit overpowered for UT - not so much as to be disturbing, but enough to be recognized as a change in gameplay and the shaft-fights with the Linkguns secondary feel a lot like those that I know from Quake 4 for example (not to mention that the sniper-rifle zoom-hud looks the same as Q4 rail, the weapon acts similar and the orange beam that comes out with a shot also looks like a thinner railgun ray...)

So if you're not a total Quake-Nazi who has to make stupid remarks about UT on ESR as a distraction of his real feelings, naming them as his fear that he'll no longer be able to find someone to play his dying game quake with within the next year, give this a try - what do you have to lose besides a maybe wrong opinion?

The DM maps... well, if the darkwalker wasn't in, they would be pretty much the same but Shangri-La seems very balanced for 4on4 TDM with the placement of weapons, healthpacks and items... we'll see the moment proper servers pop up :)

About settings and menus, however, the comments were mostly right - it looks a lot like warsow with better graphics in the menus and it's lacking a lot of options at the moment. The scalability of the mouse sucks balls (regardless of the fact that sens 1 seems to be exactly my normal 360�-diameter by the millimeter) but it isn't finished, yet and as you can't even load mods or add mutators, it's obvious that this part of the game will be different in the final version.

I think - and of course I might be wrong - that Epic did a great job on this demo and avoided repeating the errors that they did with the ut2k4 demo in giving away too much content with it:
The content within this demo is VERY limited - the menus lack options, there's only one skin/model inside, not all gamemodes are included and server options are missing, the hud isn't finished, there's only 2 crosshairs etc.
If I'm right on this one, then epic gave away only as much as was really required with this demo and not only warfare (which is pretty wayne? if you ask me) but a lot of other amazing stuff will be in the final product.

P.S. to the guys who keep up insulting the game without having played it... keep reaching for that rainbow :)

a) its a little compliment to quake
b) he respected quake the same as i am -as a quaker- the ut series
c) there are the biggest fps duel-tourney deathmatch games so far, quake/ut had a hudge community
d) some tourney quakers will play the new ut, maybe because of some views he give to us

and so on :)

i think it is legime because some players coming from these games.

I've hated UT for years......until today!

This game is the shit, and runs amazingly at the highest res and everything maxed out. very pleasant suprise to have such a solid 'beta' demo.

Rly i didn't expect UT3 to be 'fast' but actually without dodge-jump it's still pretty fast :D

Just the User GUI that sucks ass : not enough detailed, and since i ain't used to their .ini cfgs & i don't know where is my cfg to modifiy it...

UT3 + wsw +cod4 FTW :D

look in Unreal Tournament 3 Demo\UTGame\Config the UTgame.ini open with text editor , should all be in there i guess ... change true to false or viseversa. Although im sure ppl will start posting all the changes shortly

(remember to back up your ini before making any changes, just incase)

fucks sake... so i downloaded the file, started the .exe ... what does it do?
extract files, which in return extract more files, which in return extract even more files, only to tell me 'there's not enough disk space' even though there's enough disk.

how about giving me a fucking archive which i extract once on the fucking disk i want to and just play the god damn fucking game?

anyone know why I get the message that there's not enough disk space, even though theres like more than 10 GB free at the destined device?? I already set my Temp to that same partition and everything but the installation gibes me that same error after the stupid PhysX install.

because that installer is fucking retarded

it's basically a layered multiple installer that extracts itself like 3 times on the C partition (even though you modify the TEMP\TMP directory in Windows)

i had same problem as well, had plenty of space on certain drives but little space on windows drive - wouldn't let me install

in the end i had to free up some space on the windows drive and then i coud install it

blue screen of death everytime i load the game, it mentions something about checking drivers but i have no idea how to do it. i am going to do a full install again and see if that makes it run! if not i will cry and not play it, simple.

I, as an avid ut1 player, can only say that the game is closer to it than it is to any other game, and that's only a good thing. It's like UT1 with the good elements of UT2k4, imo. And yes, I've played UT2k4, it's a good game, but it's much different from ut1. I see quite a future for this game, as, knowing and experiencing how undying ut1 is, I can only say that the community should be huge, and good so, this game is going to kick ass.

After 15 minutes of this, I can see it's going to be one huge aimfest. The slower movement along with the map scale will make it difficult for players to gain position advantage quickly - leaving out-aiming the only tactic.

Ohh man I havent been here for ages but I see the brain and social quality didnt changed (grow, got better) a bit.

I'm liking the demo, need some fresh game on the scene, quake or ut based who cares. Something that gives us some cool feeling (even if its not that great as original games).

Not bad already, and hopefuly it will get better.

First of all, UT3 vehicle CTF is some of the most fun I've had in video games since forever.

Secondly, Q4 is better than Q3 in all ways at this point, and if you disagree it's either because you haven't played 1.4.2 with q4max .78d, OR you can't afford a worthwhile computer.

i personally will never play an UT or Unreal game again.

the programmers seem to do everything just on the surface.
i remember that little shuttle in Unreal2 u use to get down to the surface of whatever planet.
so i stood infront of that shuttle, shooting at it.
i did NOT expect it to explode but at least i wanted to see the impact and bullet holes..but no, they did not appear

such small things really can screw up a gaming experience.
