as a top player the cgs system is basically no advantage for you if there are several big tournaments for your game. check out the outcome for 3D and col respective their old 1.6 cs squads. not sure if you would be happy about the fact that the bad picks of your managers cost you the finals

Am I the only one who thinks this drafting thing is a crappy American system that reduces sports to show business and doesn't belong in Europe? Just like bands who are put together by the marketing staff of a record company don't make music I care for, drafted teams don't provide competition I care for.

It's an American system that does not work in the real world (of gaming), I think.

How does a draft reduce the sport to showbusiness, could you elaborate?

I believe the exact oposite, a draft system in sports ensures a much more equal playing field amongst the teams, which makes each season that much more exciting. In soccer its almost always the same very rich clubs that end up in the big finals, while in a draft system the poorer clubs still gets their share of the new talent.

A draft system combined with a salary cap makes a lot of sense to me for the development of the sport as a sport.

Drafted teams are artificially put together. A match between drafted teams is like a match between all-star teams - who wins is entirely meaningless, as all the players could just as well have been playing for the other team. Hence, show biz instead of competition.

As soon as CGS was announced it was pretty obvious it would just be gimmicky showbiz crap.

In sports where there is not a draft (like football/soccer), its still a manager of some sort that signs new players. Whats the difference between that and a draft and why is one of them "artificial"?

Yes but in football the manager can sign any combination of players he wants (if they want too), depending on the budget, which again depends on how much fans there are and how well the team has done in the past. Even though money is involved, it's still a free association of people into a team. Drafting is closer to a lottery to determine the teams.

But I'm not advocating the football system, which doesn't and shouldn't apply to gaming because in gaming the main income is and should be from prize money, not from wages. Just let teams form as they will and let those spontaneously formed teams compete for prizes - that's something I care for. Instead CGS has artificial teams with artificial names that are artificially attached to locations.

I don't mind that you prefer another system, another way of doing it.

To take an example from Quake, when Unmatched played versus Ice Climbers, those were two teams with their own story (players forming a team, living together, family and friendship relations) and with a history of rivalry with each other. I care about who wins that match. If however Unmatched and Ice Climbers were just names attached to almost random collections of players who could just as well have been grouped together in a completely different way (and *will* be completely different after the next draw) then the level of play may still be just as high, but I couldn't care less about who wins that match.

Regarding your first point, i agree that its more interesting to watch a match between known teams with a history is more interesting. But the CGS teams in the US already have one season of history.
I haven't found any info on how the draft will work for the next season in the cgs, but normally at least some of the players will be franchised for their team and will thus stay there. I haven't seen a draft league anywhere where the teams is drafted from scratch at the beginning of each season :-)

Well if its a bad GM sure, but that have nothing to do with it being a draft. There is plenty of "normal" clans that have sub par players on their team for other reasons than their skill level.

It's fairly dangerous to oblige yourself to an organization like the CGS. What if they tank, and all positions in other places are filled?

Truth is, as any person who knows their ass from their elbow can tell you, an open-ended model works best for pro-gaming. Personally, I always liked the ladder system for internet play. I don't know why people always steered away from it. With a cordoned off top-section for responsible professionals, it should work fine.

Using a ladder-system plus the already established lan system gives you a perfectly good professional gaming model. The whole lan thing is like a ladder anyway. You get one party at the top of the ladder for a while (fatal1ty, z4, cooller, toxic), then they get knocked down and someone else sits at the top for a while.

Be easy enough to transfer ladder ranks from game to game, kind of like how lan orgs transfer seeds from game to game. Internet ladders and lan tourneys are like a match made in heaven. Long live the OGL.

So the only draft I care about was Liefje tbh (cogratulations btw, had to run for a train so couldn't do it myself) :D Shame they didn't pick fnatic.css :/ But well, we're gonna see fnatic vs fnatic grand final on cpl winter :D

All in all, I didn't like the CGS event this weekend at all. I mean, I've only been on the draft, but it was boring as hell. Everything made for TV, and gamers don't watch TV anyway (!= torrents). And from what I've heard from various competitors the event itself wasn't good at all.

Inevitably some of the gamers were not happy with the event because they were not drafted, that is a natural reaction, however the majority did enjoy the event.

I am sorry that you didnt personally like it, but as you say, you only came for one day and that day was hardly representative of the entire event. You also have to remember that this was not really for spectators or indeed a spectator event, either online or in the flesh. This was, as I have explained a few times on other sites, in effect, a giant job interview for the players, including interviews with GM's, press, TV, Feature shooting, Playing challenge matches and of course the tournament organised alongside.

It was all geared towards the GM's being able to pick players to represent the new teams and whilst I love the fact that people were interested and wanted to see everything that went on, it just wasnt possible this time round. Perhaps in the future coverage will change to satisfy the hardcore gamers who DO want to attend to watch and/or view streams of the matches online.

If you have any specific complaint on the event however, id love to hear them and thoughts on what needed to be improved. The feedback I had, both on my return and whilst at the event, was on the whole very positive.

It is also worth pointing out that a lot of people did an awful lot of work to make sure the players were treated well. In fact CGS actually paid out the majority of prize money on the final day IN CASH (in some cases) and bank transfered prize money to the rest just after the event. I'd also like to point out that despite the players being made aware that they would have to pay their travel to London, CGS, having found several players were short of money to do this, put on a coach to take them down there.

Whilst CGS might not get everything right first time, it DOES care about the players and it makes every effort to make sure they come first, despite the obvious nature of the league being a televised league and the associated conflicts that potentially brings.

In the current climate of players being owed money from other organisations for winning tournaments in 2006, the prize payouts alone should prove CGS are serious about treating the players with the respect that they deserve. I would be the first person to shout about it if they didnt, I can assure you.

This is not a slant on you or your post, but did allow me to put right a few things that have been said without any basis.

Well, first of all, I'm not 'unhappy' with the event because fnatic didn't get picked. I mean, yea, that was kind of disappointing as I really thought that would be best move in their career. But everyone could have expect that, there were only 2 spots and there were 3 teams. All in all, at least proph is happy ;)

But what you said - this wasn't a spectator event. And you could see that. I dunno, maybe I'm used to big tournaments and shows like ESWC or WCG, where you get thousands of spectators cheering for their teams, great prize ceremony, real emotions (not a producer walking around and ordering players to cheer and kind of fake the emotions).

Of course, we have yet to see what it will look like in the world finals, I expect a lot of improvement in terms of spectatorship, etc.

But what I mostly disagree with are the foundations of the league - making it a TV show. I mean, maybe it's just me, but in the last six months I don't think I've watched more than 2h of TV in *total*. And half of that 2h would consist of news and second half of some Discovery documentary. I think that gamers just don't watch TV anymore. Of course, they watch Lost, 24, Heroes and other cool TV shows but on a channel called Torrent. And it's not only gamers probably - regular people aged 17-25 or smth just don't watch TV anymore. At least those who could be potential target group for the CGS. I know my friends don't watch TV.

OK, OK, I'm far from being a marketing guy and I'm sure the heads and brains of the CGS have all the stats, etc. But since last president elections in Poland I don't trust stats :) I mean, if CGS isn't targeting their content to gamers, isn't targeting their content to the core e-sports fans, then who are they targeting it to? I dare to say random teenagers won't be interested in geeks playing computer games all day and night. But I'm striding off the topic a bit.

What I think the CGS is doing wrong is starting the opposite way - changing e-sports dramatically in order to broadcast it on TV, instead of changing TV to broadcast e-sports. We're in 21st century, TV is getting old.

I'm not sure if I'm clear enough, so let's make a comparison. Football and wrestling. One is clearly made for TV and one is 100% pure with TV made for it. Now, which one has more legitimacy and is taken more serious?

Don't get me wrong - I'm not all against the CGS, far from it. I know they are kind of trying to listen to the community, I know they're talking with some people from the community, I know their solid and have money to pay the players. I know they're trying their best to evolve the industry, etc etc. It's just that so far I see that they're kind of leaving the core e-sports community behind, trying to buy out everything and own everything (a player from the UK/EU combine wasn't allowed to take his demos home because 'they were a CGS product' - but hey, who's done the performance and got nothing for it?).

What sense does this make when I read an article recently with the CGS MD about growing the CGS as a sport where people support their local teams. There is nothing local about a Brazilian team where 4/5 of their teams are mexican.

From a personal point of view, I'm delighted cos I'm married to a mexican so I love to support them but in reality its all a bit stupid really.

There needs to be some sort of system in place where teams have to have a minimum number of players/teams from their home region. For example, Out of the 5 games, Brazil should have at least South American players representing 3 of them.

I honestly don't get the whole hurrah about the CGS.. It's such a tiny/quick thing from what I can see, only with good financial backing. Like, there's only a quick tournament and one gamer/team per game per region or something, eh? It's a bit confusing actually come to think of it.

I still don't see what's athletic about sitting at a computer desk. Anything athletic about video games can only be seen in the game. Why break the virtual reality to show people doing nothing athletic whatsoever?

i don't really agree with jonesy's cynicism but that's one of the things i constantly wonder about the game choices the CGS picked.

CS, DOA and WOW (somewhat) I understand. But FIFA and PGR... honestly why would the masses want to watch a FIFA or PGR match/race over a REAL match/race that's happening all the time. Maybe they choose the game based on the overal number of gamers of the particular game, but I don't see the spectator appeal in such games.

Games like FIFA and PGR try their best to emulate the real world sport but they don't come close. What's so fun about watching someone in a chair control an 11 man team compared to the real 11 man team running and sweating out there with all the grit and things soccer's made of?

Because you can see the emotions behind it.

It's the same as watching a chess game for example. The game becomes more intense when you can see the chess players think, their expressions on their face, etc. The game itself gets more depth that way.

The CGS games are not professional. Few of the players are professional, if any.

In a normal sport, people start playing when they're 5. Millions of people play their entire youth, through increasingly rigorous training and better competition. At the end of it all, only a small handful make it to the pro's.

Maybe the CGS games are fun, but in a pro-game you need more than fun. Checkers can be fun, but would you try to create a pro-checkers organization?

CGS has nothing but business-tricks. It does not surprise me they created a fundamentally flawed structure. They don't know anything about video games. But I am surprised people in the community, like Sujoy, did not see the flaws. Enjoy living in a paper-house, constantly under-assault by solid competition.

The internet vids are just there to try and get info up. In reality this is a TV show and the stuff that goes out on SKY 1 in December is what it's all geared around. That sucks for people trying to watch it now, I agree, but I hope that they get their stuff together and the quality of the actual TV production makes it worthwhile. We'll find out in December.

The main TV show is actually going out in December because they're running 7 days straight with a show every night showing the combine, draft, uk finals, then world finals. That means this show won't go out until then! Shame, but this one is about TV, and needs the best possible viewing figures - and that's how they decided to run it.

i've watched a DOA4 vod on QuadV site

the game is absolutely boring and lacks, like most 3D fighting games, the frantic/visceral feeling of a crisp 2D game that defined the genre in the first place.. the moves were so basic and combos really unspectacular.

i'm playing more intense games each night in Street Fighter Alpha on GGPO using my worn-out keyboard on the PC.

i guess the same thing happens to the fighting games scene as well: the "realistic" games with 3D graphics have stolen the spot light from the skilled games of the past.

luckily the Japanese are staying true to the art of fighting games like the Street Fighter/Guilty Gear/King Of Fighters series, much like Koreans stick with Starcraft..

Yea I sold my shares so I haven't been involved with OS before signing a contract with CGS. Also as Nicky said, the TV show for UK draft and UK finals was all done in 3 Mills Studion in East London.

uk was for uk only... every other eu country had the eu draft

UK is a separate Region for CGS so only british citizens and residents were eligible for the draft. This is because SKY are doing a series of 7 TV shows to be aired on their main channel just before Christmas and they are predominantly a UK broadcaster so they want to follow UK teams.
