No Quake (3 or 4, I don't even really care about that) is a bad decision as it is, but to see the WCG choose a billiard game over Quake is just terrible. They just lost all my respect.

Also, is this the way to get more people interested in professional gaming? They'll just think that gaming at itself is a big joke if they hear that there are actually tournaments in billiard games.

Many people are suprised but Carom3d was in the WCG last year as well. So did PangYa (online golf game), I believe PangYa even got twice the price money amount of Q4.

I thought last year, with WCG coming to ESR and asking us to organise the Quake 4 invite was a brave and great thing to do by them. They didnt need to, no one expected it and to be honest, if they hadnt done that, no one would have cared.

Sure, they wouldnt have gotten so much exposure on ESR, but there are plenty of other ways they get that if they want it.

So for 2007 I was truly hopeful, having spoken at length to people from ICM about the choice of at least ONE FPS, either Quake 4, Quake 3 or even perhaps an Epic related title. The odds seemed good and although it was missing from the initial round of game announcements, I was sure a 1v1 FPS would eventually be announced.

Now, while I am not stupid enough to think they picked Carom3D (which might well be a fine game) over Quake , the fact remains that WCG have damaged their standing as the premier esports tournament of the year, certainly with FPS fans anyway. It seems a strange choice, but we do have to accept that in these days of high power tournaments, money talks. I can't for the life of me think of any other reason this would be chosen, other than perhaps allowing casual players to enter the WCG, which after all, does pride itself on bringing people together from different countrues and cultures.

I would doubt however, that the WCG will ever be looked at in the same light by 1v1 FPS fans and players should they not decide to run a tournament for something 1v1 fps related.

Call of Duty's competition for inclusion at events like the World Cyber Games is with only one game: Counter-Strike.

CS is one of the few games that is included at the World Cyber Games based on it's competitive scene which is what CoD needs to be included on as well unless someone is willing to pay big bucks to see it at the event.

With six persons needing to be flown over and taken care off (five players and a manager) as well as both being comparable games on a outsider point of view (a five person team carrying guns taking on a mission against another five person team carrying guns) you will not see the game being played next to CS on its competitive merits unless those competitive merits exceed those of CS (in which case you'll see it replace CS).

It's a very different comparison.

Both games seem to be included on competitive merits as well. 1on1 games don't require the same "investment" (1/6th of the players, less prize money) for a event as teamgames do.

Unlike CoD and CS, the games appeal to very different crowds. WarCraft III has a global appeal as a game with hotspots in China, Korea and Germany while StarCraft appeals incredibly strongly to the WCG Korean homebase. This is why you'll see WarCraft at all "world championships" while StarCraft only makes a appearance at this "world championship" that has a Korean homebase to appeal to (similiarly you'll see ESWC for example try to appeal to the French homebase and WSVG to the USA homebase despite being "world" events).

StarCraft also has a very strong tradition with the World Cyber Games.

And ofcourse both games have a tremendous fanbase to back them up, WarCraft is second only to Counter-Strike in this aspect and StarCraft is not far behind (centered mainly in Korea). While this might also be true to some degree with CoD (I dont know the numbers of the game), the other factors change the story.

Added to the fact that both CS and CoD in their current form make horrible spectator sports.

CoD2 is actually very exciting to watch. It was the most popular game for viewers at the last EuroCup lan by far, (the event featured CoD2, CS, Quake4 and WC3). It's quite easy to follow, a lot faster than CS and has a large community to back it up.

I'm sure it's faster, but it sure as hell isn't Quake or UT, and I'm pretty sure it doesn't feature 1v1 competitions..

I also have to say I think people are getting fed up with the WW2-clones already, no offense.

Why? Because they want more Sci-Fi clones?

I don't know why the masses are moving in this direction, but you'll see this tendency in reviews, and if you ask the kids what they like. Maybe because "realistic" WW2 games have dominated gaming the last 5-6 years?

Why no Quake? Partly because of poor release/development of Q4, but also much because stubborn Q3 players kept boycotting and shit-talking a perfectly good game.

Q3 in WCG is never going to happen again. I guess "getting Q3 back" was what a lot of quakers hoped for, if they only shit-talked Q4 enough? Guess what, a game needs to look good to get sponsors.
Or maybe they hoped they could just play Q3 until ID "came back" in the public eye with Quake V or whatever..? Guess what, ID aren't a legend company anymore in most "kids" eyes.

In other words - the murder of Q4 (as caused mostly by stubborn players), was effectively NOT the resurrection of Q3, but the death of Quake. ;P

It's not just an esports site. For a long time this site has baiscally been "the" q3(and 4) community site.

I know it works as a community site for several games and that the focus (naturally) has been on the Quake series. But if you watch the front page (and archives), and if you've follow Sujoy Roy's work, you'll see quite clearly that this site's focus is upon the phenomenon of eSports.

I think I know about this site, and why I'm here, why others are here etc. just as well if not more than you.

You're kind of missing the fact that games that already have a humongous population, don't need good graphics to get sponsors, or to grow. Nobody knows exactly how big StarCraft is, but it's well within the range of CS.

I still don't get why people say Q3 is ugly though, apart from slightly less polygons and lower resolutions textures (Although if you compare that to d3/q4 it's not much difference because the bump maps is where the detail comes from) which you can't really spot that much anyway and beats a lot of console games by miles up untill maybe this generation just coming out :o

that's because many people can't see past polygon counts and high resolution textures. q3 imo has the best use of colour in any fps and its textures while being of lower resolution than today's games, are still fantastic to look at and have amazing detail. they also fit the whole arena theme very well. not to mention the models actually seem to have some kinda personality and life unlike q4's hunchbacks.

How about just facing the facts? Q3 looked like a circus mixed with a disco from the first day. The mipmapped configs, in my opinion, do look quite nice (tbh I wish low LODbias looked this good in Q4), but you think that matters to Joe Average out there? Or NVidia/Intel?

NVidia/Intel are currently looking towards titles like Crysis, which are going to boost their incomes. Q3 can't compete with that. That's why Q3 can't be in WCG again (without support of a huge population).

that's just the thing. i don't need to accept anything. this really is my opinion. i remember a long time back when i opened q3 for the very first time, i went "holy shit this looks good". i'm not talking about picmipped cfgs. i play q3 in full detail just like your Joe Average. when i saw q4 i thought it looked really bad. the dm17 version of q4 looks like someone spilled a ton of concrete. the only thing i thought was good looking from the entire map was the remake of edge in full detail. doom 3 looked waaay better than q4 in my opinion. maybe you should face the facts that Raven did a mediocre job with the models, animations and textures? q3 stands out with it's unique theme and atmostphere. q4 has a little bit of doom 3 here and a little bit of something else there and it just didn't work very well. maybe if id had made the whole game, it would have looked much better.

For one, that's your personal taste. Most of the games that are popular today, are dominated by "realistic" colors. Like CoD. I personally like the more "arcade" style better.

That's not my point though, my point is quite simple; if you have a small game, you can still get sponsors if the game shows off new technology.

Sure it would be great if they would only look at what the players want, but let's face it. The players don't sponsor the tournaments, but companies do an they want new games either because they sell them or because they sell the hardware.

Are we not getting the wrong sponsors then? Instead of getting ati/nvidia or amd/intel, should we not rethink if those sponsors are really viable to grow the sport and create a stable platform. Should we not rather attract sponsors where size and support is more important. I am thinking of ISP's and other telekoms. Other products such as earphones, gaming mice etc and other products gamers will consume.

IMO if 1v1 fps gaming does not move into that direction it will be doomed to every new shitty game the developers spew out.

Of course that wuold be great, but I doubt that is even close to realistic.

Without going to check to actual numbers I will assume that the turnover of game developers, nvidia, ati, amd, intel, all the motherboard manufacturers, the psu manufacturers and last but not least all the venders is many times bigger than that of mice, mousepad and earphone manufacturers.
So, they simply have more money.
And they do spend more money.
But only on attractive audiences that are either very large and thus guarantuee a big exposure while maybe a lower percentage will actually buy new things or smaller audiences that play the newest games and thus have to keep investing money.

Hmm, it still does not seem to make a complete picture. Even Q3 players do play other games, wow, elder scrolls etc, that require high end pc's.
When these grapics/cpu sponsors sponsor even low end games, they still advertise their product to an audience. I think they make the wrong perception that gamers that play older 1v1 fps games, do not need to be sponsored, because they won't use their new hardware.
To sponsor a new game every year will only make these audiences smaller and smaller imo.

I support Asus not only because they have good products, but also of their support of the Asus tournaments in russia, with supporting the game I play(q3).

Even players of olders games will buy new stuff. But on a slower rate than players of new games. So sponsoring older games makes sense when there is a big audience. Hence cs, wc3 and sc get sponsored.
But it simply makes less sense to sponsor a small community with an older game.

With that I already suggested that we stick to one game that have potential for growth. Or else 1v1 fps games will always be small and unsustainable.

Q4 had a competitive scene and people who were there for the game, and it had sponsors who liked the graphics. It even had entertaining commentators like RedEye and Tosspot.

I played the game for fun. Guess what? With patience for some occasional issues, it worked. I've played a lot of FPSes on a clan level. Q4 was a good one.

Q3 now only has a slow death to look forward to. Sad but true.

I didn't play Q3 back in 2002/2003.

I played Q4 pretty much untill very recently (When there was like, two tournaments left)

Slightly OTT on the iD front really, considering that it was Raven who savaged Quake 4 and rather than let it die and forget about it, it was iD that stepped back in and took control over its development (read : FIXING) and although its taken time, they have done a fantastic job with what was effectively a smelly turd of a game released half arsed by Raven.

True, but my point wasn't that Q4 destroyed ID's reputation, but that Blizzard is the current "God of gaming" for most kids. Or for XBox players, Bungie I guess.

It was in my opinion, first the long pause after Q3 that made people forget ID, and then Doom 3, which in many people's eyes made ID look oldfashioned.

Also remember, concerning Raven's half-arsedness, that it was ID that gave Raven their contract. Already with Doom3, ID showed a clear lack of dedication for the multiplayer scene (several times stating Q3's focus on multiplayer was "a mistake").

FPS DM / TDM is dead - the quicker everyone realises this the quicker they can move on with their lives.

There are barely any tournies this year and the ones that were planned are being cancelled.

id created online deathmatch and they also pretty much managed to kill it which is quite ironic.

Hmm, would it be different if 'western' tournaments actually hold events where the player base and game is strong, instead of picking a brand new fps 1v1 game each year, only to create destabilization? I don't think Q4 or id is to blame here, event organizers picking unsustainable games are to blame.

No point running a FPS 1vs1 shooter where people will be unhappy regardless of the game that is going to be played, they may just aswell go play cs.

Stick to one damn game, no matter how old it is. As long as it has a great sustainable community, user friendly, spectator friendly and player friendly. Its not hard to figure out what games fall into this category, and stick to them. Tournaments should not be a charity to promote XYZ developers new game. It should be a tournament to promote its players.

Last hope: ESWC '07 (Paris).

I went there last summer, and it was a fricking show, people loved Q4 1v1 to death, everyone in the hall gave football-style cheers and chants for their french favorite. It was massive, MUCH bigger than CS and WC3 on that event. Because FPS DM 1v1 puts on a hell of a show.

Believe me, if they can get sponsors, they are definitely bringing Q4 back another year and hopefully see another french win.

I hope people will support ESWC this year and not give them a sour face just because they pick Q4 again, because believe me, watching Q4 there was damn good last year.

Q4 is not good enough for that, to small a player base and not user friendly enough. And I am not talking about ESWC, I am talking about world wide tourney's.

As long as Q4 has sponsors, a hall full of people cheering for it, looks good on the screen, and has great players like Toxic, Cypher etc.. nobody cares "how little userfriendly" it is.

ESWC fell in love with Q4 last time, and if they can help it, I'm quite sure Q4 is coming back.

With that mentallity of: "Okay! throw me whatever the shit you guys have been developing on the past 3 years, even if it sucks massive donkey balls and its orientated to console fags and casuals, and has nothing to do with esports. Doesn't matter! we (the community, or the same 2 or 3 guys as always), will fix that with another CPMA, or Q4MAX, or whatever the mod that while fixing things, complicates a lot when new players try to join a server. We will work as developers FOR FREE because you, rich fat asses, doesn't give a fuck about PLAYABLE MAPS, GRAPHICS THAT DOESN'T MAKE YOU VOMIT ON THE DESK, AND GODDAMNED BRIGHTSKINS (and the rest of of stuff we all know)

At this state, after the Q4 thing, I can't understand how people still can have such thoughts. The comunity must not be forced AGAIN (we are on 2007 FFS) to work for games that claim themselves to be competitive games (Hi Tim Willits, aka Q4 will be the best MP experience of all Quakes combined. Hi Unreal TOURNAMENT (rofl) 2k7, and the rest of joke games promissing a fascinating future for 1v1 competitions). If people continues to do that, the release of games in STUPID beta states without ANY improvements compared to his antecessor, will continue to never stop.

So, if want to be releastic, you must admit that the 1v1 scene its pretty fucked with such retarded dumbasses runing (or ruining?) all the big tournaments that used to be enjoyable, and worth the practice. Everyone that cares about the quality of the games being played, knows that the only hope left here its on Q3, and maybe Severity. On the Q3 vs Q4 thing again mentioned on this thread... im pretty tired. If you are not blind and have a decent taste for "well made" things, you can see how Q3 (from a NEUTRAL pov), its a better product than Q4 in all the aspects we are talking about here (competition as a whole). Im not going to elaborate again on this, because the reasons of "why Q3 and not other game" are been widely discussed on other threads, and they are so many. And anyway, the wannabes still playing Q4 wouldn't want to listen at all.

if q3 had been picmip5.. then i'd probably say q3 looks better, but the hud is still kind of not-good-looking.

it's quite retarded to actually think comparing graphics between two games is proper if it's the same map.. it's not.
you could maybe pick maps where you can agree that's the best looking map for each game.

About the hud, that was STUPID to even mention. On CPMA you can make your hud look like whatever you want. That photo its from OSP.

And anyway, Q4 hud its fugly as hell, so fits with the overall grey-brown-green palette obviously inspired by the observation of a pile of triceratops crap.

i must assume that you are talking about the built-in q4max huds? yes, i don't like them and you cannot modify them (i think) _but_ you can also create your own hud which has an underlying scripting language and not just some attributes for elements like q3 has. one big difference is that you can modify the weaponlist in q4.
in qw you can even add new textures.

maybe it sounded a bit exaggerated and sure, q3 has more fps... but i don't have any problems with smoothness (only with sound currently ;) ). and the crouchslide gives it an own touch and a highpaced game.

q3 is superior, deal with facts and move on.

UT3 is not a console game converted to PC, it's developed for both. Q3 will not be resurrected, give Ut3 a try you whiners?

If you think UT3 has something to do on being a decent "competitive game" you are a complete fool. It will be another Q4, or even worse. I've experienced that "lets wait to see if it sucks!" situation so many times, that you can sense it by miles.

About the Q3 players whining, that has a pretty simple answer: If you got used to such a quality product, everything else that doesn't acomplish those standards its CRAP. And you gotta learn filtering crap from the worth ones, if you don't want to end playing every single "competitive" game that pops up every year for money, without considering if the game its a failure or not.

At the end of the day its just logics:

a quality product > a worse product

adapting to a worse product when you have a quality one already because its new, and biased tournaments use it = you are a complete wannabe without any criteria

And you looked into your magic crystal ball, and the crystal told you Ut3 is another Q4, right. First of all i doubt u know jack about UT in general, like most Quakers. And i do agree with Q4 being a big turd, that doesn't have to mean UT3 will be like that.

They have taken feedback from the community when it comes to UT3, they're not going Raven style and just spewing in gfx and caring fckall what the community and players actually want. They're trying to make it a middle thing to UT99 and UT2k4, which is something many people wished for them to do, they've also balanced the weapons, maps and movement after player feedback on theyr previous games.

Dont talk of things you know nothing about. I dont know much about Q3 hence i dont talk about how i feel the shaft is not balanced.

You haven't tried the game, you don't seem to know much about the game yet you have a distinct opinion that it's going to be the next Q4, stop pulling stuff out of your ass.

I think CS 1.6's days are numbered. Valve adding ads, eventually wer'e going to come to situation where Nvidia is psonsoring a tournament and the players are running around on dedust with an ATI ad on the wall.
