Hmm... I'd say it's extremely unlikely that your system would not be able to handle UT3. If previous Unreal games are any indication then UT3 should run quite well on any decent gamer PC. Besides, they're optimizing for intel integrated graphics support - your 6600gt is a lot more powerful than that kind of video card.

Yeah, UT series used to be quite tweakable. Lets hope it will let you benefit from turnining most of the stuff off unlike Q4 where tweaking visuals didnt seem to affect the performance at all.

rofl, comon, by todays standards, my pc, is a low end gaming rig, the only way its going to work decently here is with 640x480 and lowest of the low fx settings, and lol@intelextremegfx optimisation, they will never get it to work at over 15fps for any machine that has that 'Gpu'

You do realize the UT games have always been amongst the most scalable FPS games, right? Even UT2004 featured software rendering that allowed pretty much anyone to play the game with good framerates, even on 3-5 year old PCs.

That's why a bunch of fucking instagib retards had TIW introduced into UT99 because pulse and minigun were super powerful and people played all match with those weapons! (While the real problem was the ammo capacity of those guns.)

Well, some american pro's are going to be invited to epic to test play UT3 next month. Lotus, the creator of UTComp stated that he wouldn't make UTComp for UT3 but there is a slim chance he will if it turns out to be a good game with minor flaws.

Thats how the ut rocket launcher works. You can shoot 1 rocket or load up 3 an shoot all 3 at once. but if you shoot 3 you have to wait for them all to load. Then you just hold all 3 until you release the fire button. Their rl is terrible, absoulutely unusable. Each rocket does hardly any damage.

first of all you are wrong on like 2 of your 3 points that you state.

- Yes you can shoot 1, and 3
- No you don't have to load all 3, you can also shoot 2
- They hardly do any dmg? wrong again.

and thats not the point we are talking about here. The point here is that if you load all, you apperntly can wait a second or even longer before shooting the rockets. And that didn't appear in any of the series before this.

fact is I played both competively. There is some elements in UT that are better than Quake.

Movement in Quake isnt neccesarily more skilled because it takes longer to master.

UT's movement is far less demanding on map geometry. More maps are fun in Unreal Tournament than maps are fun Quake games.

Unreal Tournament has faster explosive action because of the dodge. It all comes down to reactiontime and reading the opponent.
In Quake it's more about people moving really fast and once they face each other they slow down a lot. In Unreal Tournament you see a more continous speed that is higher during actual fights.

I love Quake movement for a lot of things but it's a matter of preference in the end.

Circle Jumps work as UT dodges basically.

basically they done, yes you get more speed with circling it (not many people know that in UT).

However dodging allows players to keep their focus. I find this feels a lot different in games with (even quite agressive) circlejumps like cpma or QW.

when i tried to play DM6 in UT2k4 i was like ok now this takes 2hours to get somewhere xD but afeter a while it was okeish tho i still "prefere" the movement of quakes in general

Quake uses simplicity as a method of reducing spam. DM6 is a very very simple map, just like ZTN they both have at most 3 points of attack. In UT there are 10x more options for attacking play. Quakers have good aim because they know exactly where the other person is because the map is so simple. I don't really think that is a 'good' feature of the game and i don't think it shows more skill if anything it means there is less thought in it.

But you also failed to mention maps like pro-toureny 4/Hub which have lot's of scope with regards to surprise attacks many years after tehir release.

ZTn and Dm6 have been played to death and as a result players now know the best palces to attack etc.
But when a map is new, it takes a long time for these areas to become as obvious as you make out. With the exception of Phrantic, but play a pro player on Phrantic and it's bloody depressing no matter how well you know the map.

Yet those maps are still played. Hub is difficult and there are lots of options, but lots of options for both players the tele's mean you can move quickly enough to cover a lot of angels from a lot of spaces. The spawn raping you see in quake you very very rarely see in ut thats not a skill difference but a game design difference.

For me there is one main reason to dislike UT and love Quake.
Weapon balancing. Epic honestly don't know shit about balancing a game.
The shockcombo is way overpowered and destroys the game.

Combo might be powerful, but because of the cores slow speed, it's fairly easy to dodge at most times, and avoid with the shieldgun.

The balance issues in ut2k4 mainly comes because of brightskins, otherwise it'd be balanced (as skins are fairly dark at default in ut2k4 = no hitscan whoring ;))

Whining is a lame online thing. Even though I don’t like cs myself, I also think it lame when Quakers and uters whine about it, since it has some qualities.
When quakers whine about UT3, much of it is because they don’t like ut but I also think a factor like jealousy is involved. And that’s why some just scream out that it sucks.
I know zeicon isn’t one of them, but deep down I think he just love quake that much that he would love to see ut3 fail ;)

The rest of your post I have to agree on, but I think you miss some things.
I am an uter myself, but can see that quake had fitted me much better, yet I don’t play it anymore. Its imo much harder to find a game and the community is a lot worse to help new players with their pro attitude. I know a big community is not a core element that makes a game good, but I think it’s a big factor when people decide which game they will play. You know, many uters were ready to shift to Q4, but quickly left when they saw the troubles with it.

The quake movement > UT movement, is something I personally agree with. But THAT is a personal preference. UT movement offers something that quake movement doesn’t and the opposite.

I was one of the UTers ready to move fully on to Q4.

I *wanted* Q4 to be good.
I liked Q3, but just found UT to be a little more fun and more challenging.
I always prefered the weapons in UT over Quake. I, however, favoured the Q3 movement, simply because it doesn't hurt my fingers like UT does. :)

Q3 and UT were out at roughly the same time.
Back then, as a noob, I just liked UT's universe better.
UT was more sci-fi, whereas Q3 was more of the 'Hell-theme'. I just 'felt' better on a UT map, purely visually.

Then the weapons made me love UT more than Q3. There are more than twice as many weps in UT when you count alt fire.
Plus I instantly loved UT CTF with the translocator.

Years later, I actually wanted to switch to Q3 (I was fed up with the UT community en large), but I quickly found the Q3 EU community to be virtually non-existant (compared to UT's).
So I had to choice but to stay @ UT (switched to instagib).
Had Q3 had more players at that stage, I would prolly still be playing Q3 by now.

Anyway, as I was saying:
I *wanted* Q4 to be good, it was going to be my next game.
But alas, what a pile of SHIT!

In ut you pretty much just have to concentrate on 100a. I would agree that quake doesn’t allow for mistakes. Though much of the time I think it is aimwise you can’t do any mistakes.

I would more call that prediction spam. In ut, the combats can be really ridicules because no one can hit anything and so they will just spam some flak secondary or use the mini in fear that they won’t hit any.

When I spam a grenade the sole aim is not just to hit the player. It's also to discourage the player from taking that route etc.

I've played Quake, all of them, and I still prefer UT2k4 to any of them. Yes, Quake is faster, but at the same time the close combat is a lot simpler, there's less control over your movement in the here and now, but more in the long run. UT is a lot more hectic in under 10 meter fights, whereas Quake is either rocket spam to the end or another LG fight.

And VQ3 vs. UT2004, weapon switch times are on average lower in UT.

Im quite happy with the gameplay as showed here. Ofc the game looks spammy, specially when its a DM FFA game. What did you expect to see when there are 10ppl running around, weaponstay is on etc.
Go to a standard ut2k4 ffa pub and you see the same thing. Im quite confident you see a whole other gamestyle in 1o1/tdm.
About the rocketspeed: looks fine to me, they aint too fast so you can avoid the 3roxspam. Imagine them at quakespeed, you'd get yourself a nice overpowered weapon.
But i'd like to see some brightskins (well, at least epic brightskins like in 2k4), if not I'd see shit :)

Even Epic brightskins in UT2004 are so damned dark. UTComp brightskins were a necessity in 2k4. Personally I don't see the problem with brightskins overall. I think visibility in a fast-paced FPS is paramount to gameplay. If you can't see them, you can't shoot them, and this isn't meant to be about hiding in dark corners.

Epic brightskins + force Gorge model is pretty ok imo ;o

But it *is* sad that everyone is virtually forced to use the same player model, just to be able to play the game properly (without usage of UTcomp)

True its not but i think from a gameplay perspective there is a good game atmosphere generated from not having bright skins. Brings a further dimension to it. e.g. the crates in the corner of deck (ut1) people are hard to see there good spot to try and retake the top from.

the rl looked a lot more like the speed of the original (pleases me at least), the movement looked fast but not floaty and the dodging looked right, the characters also looked to be a better scale within their environment compared to 2k4.

tweaks are cool. i still kinda like to play with full graphics. quake games i dont mind using vertex lighting for some reason.

ut2k3/4 was somewhat tweakable if you edited the ini file. i could get a good 15 fps boost without really effecting the gfx

OK watched it, flak looks waaaah no like. rest seems nice, and the only thing i liked about the new gfx however was at around 1:05 someone dies, and there's just blood all over the floor \o/.

But it seems they'e learned they'r lessons a bit, can almost see the skins, prolly see them even better if you turn all the lightning and shadows off, and also the map doesn't look like you get stuck everytime you get close to a wall.

And I thought Q4 rocket launcher was ugly.... :/

Looks good to me - I've been a Quaker since Q1 but I still loved UT, the only reason I don't play UT online is the gay dodging / movement which imho is horrible and ruins it completely.

That first map sucks. Its just a big open space with a few upper terraces. Reminds me of the map in painkiller where you can only use stakes. No strategy.

Well, yes, but it's still floating around 50% user-made. It'd be more, but some maps stick around because people grew to like them despite them being kinda shit, ala Corru, Asbestos, Anta.

Corru is a good map imo, allows for all guns to be effecient, EVEN when there's two shocks and minis on the map.

I've only had UT2K3 before but I didn't like the way that played much, so I don't think UT3 will be my next regular game. Still I'm going to get it anyway for the graphics, and see if it'll be good enough to choke my 8800GTX at medium res :P Anyhow am I blind, or did I see no robot models? :( I really loved those in 2K3, and they'd do UT3's graphics such justice :D

Yeah but I don't care about how bad UT2K3 might have been compared to any of the others, nor is it my point, as the basic principles of the game are likely to be the same from what I have seen of UT3 so far. Besides, I hardly even touch Q3 or Q4 at the moment I play COD2 (my flag hints I like COD2) so much, so I'm not going to be another one in the Quake over UT series of posts. My point is that the graphics simply crap all over most current PC releases, and my system spec is good enough that it would be a waste to stay playing the likes of COD2 and Q4 for ever because their graphics are dated.

Just looks like the previous two for me from every aspect, I don't hold out much hope for it at all.

I honestly can't see how anyone can like such a weak movement, and generally disgusting gameplay. C'mon and wake up, all this game got is the fancy gfx, weapon models that look like spaceships, and insanely detailed maps that will make you, again, pay to play the same thing. As a competitive plataform, obviously this fails so much im not going to even bother in elaborate on anything.

Not in those that exist now. Dont know about UT3, but I doubt it.

You can do shock-secondary jumps, and pretty good impact hammer jumps (and you spawn with that weapon :).

Self-damage is pretty high on both of those though. 20 with shield (not charged), I think 20-30 from shock secondary. In practice, you rarely see it as you don't gain enough of an advantage from doing it. You can usually do the same as a walldodgejump instead, which is free, and makes you harder to hit at the same time.

on a few maps like rankin, shock jumping was really wicked, and a big advantage when chasing someone.

But most of the time, useless like you said.

In UT1 you could rocketjump but it would take quite a bit of damage so you would do it rarely, especially that it did not take you either too far or too high. Still, it was so rare you could easily surprise someone with it if you were smart enough.

I can be considered as quaker probably (most time spent playing quakes most cpma, later a bit of PK), but i liked UT2k3 -> 2k4.

At first i was excited with "coming" of new UT, but this was... erm 3 years ago maybe. Since then every news about gameplay or anything makes it less interesting.

Now all i can say is *yawn*.

Movement was nerfed to be more UT99 style (not good imo) and at the same time they make walking/running looks like from 15 km/h in previous UTs to 45 km/h.

Massive spam-fest with "eye candy graphics" (which was btw. good looking 2 years ago now it's not stunning anymore).

i think the movement looks much more fluent than previous versions of UT. Although the runspeed may seem sluggish at first glance it is actually quit fast. In previous versions of the ut series using dodge was very jerky, it had a sudden boost in speed then it felt like you stopped dead before you moved again. It appears after a dodge in UT3 you move off smoothly.

Could be that the run speed is a slight bit faster and the dodge speed is a slight bit slower ?

It'll be sad if there is no"skill set" that is hard to master but easy to do, like quake has circle and strafe jumping. In quake with circle jumping and strafe jumping there is always room for improvement ,you can continuously practice and there will always be another level of skill to obtain (how ever impossible it may be). CS has its aiming system, where there is gun spray, crouching and movement to be controlled when firing a weapon, it is a very hard skill to have your gun work constantly and also stay alive at the same time. What does UT have? Double dodge? That can take a short while of practice and you have it nailed, no more room to get better at it.

UT's always had a lot of prediction and aim. Effective utilisation of combos has always been a factor, and in UT2k*, weapon choice has been massive. A good player knows how to chain together their weapons to get the maximum effect, ie, flak to combo to LG to mini, within ~4 seconds.

As much as you may want to say it, VQ3 doesn't have that sort of weapon juggling (though CPMA does).

And i've played a lot of both Quake3/4 and UT2k3/4, my personal favorite was UT2k4. What i can see about the gameplay is that it doesn't look at ut2k4. So where do the comments, that are like "same old crap" and what ever basically comes down to that, come from?

Graphics 9/10: look pretty awesome for a FPS. More realistic than Q4, but less than Crysis (though its DX10). Plants and grass look really fake, though a lot of work has gone into map decoration. Some nice extra effects like decent backgrounds outside maps and environment effects such as wind and leaves falling. Definitely need some brightskins, player lights up when firing, etc, but so much detail in the maps compared to UT2004, makes it harder to spot player amongst the spam and lighting.

Sound 6/10: Same old, seems decent enough, hard to judge from just this clip.

Gameplay 6/10: Same shit, just quite basic and getting boring, no doubt some frantic fun for a few days. Movement seems too much work and lots of spam.

Total Anticipation score: 7/10
Disappointed, this won't attract a large player base, probably the same number as UT2004.

Am I the only one who finds the graphics ugly? The renderer looks impresive, but the textures are so much overdetailed that I find it looking like a cheap painting.

Gfx look outstanding and because it looks so real it’ll give more of a feeling/fear/excitement playing it. The maps I seen give me the impression that ppl are gonna be able to hide a little (bringing a new little gameplay element). The weapons look REALLY FUN to play with!
The only little fear I have is about the movement, but then again it kinda looks like ut99 (which is a game that all the veterans seem to revere). I just hope that the map forms/textures won’t hinder the movement gameplay. The in/outcoming projectiles look obvious, easy to see which is great for gameplay. FPS games aren’t necessarily the most fun to watch/spec and your not watching Lauke here, its just some guy having a little fun on the map. All and all the game looks like a fuckin’ BLAST! I’m actually really happy to finally see a gameplay movie and I’m really looking forward for more on this !

The rockets actually look to be UT'99-ish, which is a good thing considering the rest of the movement has been made to be more in line with UT'99 as well. If the rockets were the same as UT2k3/UT2k4 they'd be horribly overpowered because no one could ever move out of the way fast enough.

i disagree, UT99 was dominated by trackscan (minigun and pulse) how much rocket lancher action did u see in WCG finals or what ever? none? it will be the same thing again, only track/hit scan action.

and what you can't dodge the rocket if it would have Ut2k4 speed?
thats no problem in Q3 and they don't even have the UT "dodge"(and the speed is even higher?) so thats just bullshit and besides i would rather have more rocketlancher action then track/hitscan action any time of the day.

for me it all comes down to fun action and frags. i would like to make an airgibb whit rocketlancher now and then, but whit that speed it would likely not happend unless he has his ass in my face.

for the last 3 years tiw and now purestats have been used to reduce the damage that pulse + minigun do. Now the game is more flak/rl/shock than mini/pulse. You would get horribly beaten if you were to abuse pulse + mini now like in the old days :)

u can adapt to it tbh, i hated it at first too, but once you change your movement a little bit to avoid all the flak/2ndary shock that gets thrown around now, its fine. Purestats is a big improvement over tiw as well and makes pulse/mini a little bit stronger

Yes its pretty obvious that if you take the main raping weapons, mini/pulse and make them weaker, then theres gonna be a new prefered weapon. Its just about adapting a little bit to the new style, but if you think that just being able to aim will win in tdm now then u are mistaken.

because for my mind, combos, rl + flak require the same amount of prediction as they always have.

Sniper aim = point and click.
Shock aim = point and click.
Flak aim = point and click.

These three are the most dominant weapons, the rest is plain spam with little merit beyond it just being spam.

hasnt shock pri + sniper always been point and click? flak to a degree is point and click up close, but to say the rest is just spam i dont agree with. Theres a lot of people out there right now that do the combos, use the rl the way it should be and those that can still mini/pulse - and those right at the top that use them all, just as the high end always have.

imo enforcer is the only weapon to really have massively benefited from tiw/purestats as players now tend to run towards u instead of away on spawn. I do however think that the spam, especially flak, has increased also.

i didnt like tiw, but purestats is fine.

Double-dodge (dodge-jump) is gone for good.
Walldodge is still there, but who cares. It won't be of much use anyway, now that the (wall)dodge-jump is gone. Same for double-jump

I'm pretty sure it will come in VERY hand in tight situations, walldodge is used all the time these days to get away from walls, to avoid getting hit by plash damage and such

Yes but with the actual dodge being smaller anyway, the actuall wall dodge will be far less effective as you will be closer to the wall than in UT2kX.

Why is the comparision always to Q3? Is it because most of you were too young when Quakeworld came out or what? I have played online DM games since Quake1 test came out, and before that, tons of Doom and Duke3d on modem. I actually played QW in a quite high level, both DM and TF. I wanted to give Q2 a chance, but it was just somehow too slow, lacking feel and uninteresting. All those concepts about lots of balanced weapons and slower, more "realistic" pace, footsteps and such had quite an appeal at the time, when QW was the only online DM game out there, but it soom became clear that Q2 just couldn't match the speed and intensity of QW. It's movement speed and skill needed for bunnyhopping was clearly lower, maps didn't have such a flow and it just lacked feel. Q2 never became popular in Finland (or Scandinavia in general), and people kept playing QW. Now, when Q3 came out, it did sound like a cool mix of QW and Q2, but how is Q2 actually different from Q3? Q3 had faster weapon switching, pretty much the same movement and feel of Q2 and smaller weapon arsenal. It was simplified version of Q2 with updated gfx. Even as Q2 maps somehow lacked flow, they were quite large and "tactical", but Q3 maps were just so ridiculously simple. Like Rocket Arena maps. The low powered weapons, pretty useless armor and low tempo (compared to QW) made Q3 Dm and especially TDM much less interesting and lacking in depth.

While simplicity made QW somehow really tactical, fast and fun to play, simplicity combined with low tempo and powerless, totally aimbased weapons of Q3 made it just boring. Maps are super simple, but as map control is far less important in Q3 as it was in QW, it's not tactical. Q2 featured a lot more trickjumps than Q3, and QW has a bunnyhopping technique, which was REALLY hard to master on the cramped maps, but REALLY efficient when used correctly. In Q3 movement didn't have much depth. You could easily see the long corridors and pathways where you can just press one/two keys and keep clicking the jump button, and you would gain speed. In the first turn, you would lose that speed. Due to the very simple layout and geometry of the maps, there weren't much slopes to use for your advantage. CPMA is of course better, but it just loans stuff from QW, and makes it way less demanding and easier. So, what's there to learn and improve in Q3 for a pro player? You can learn the map layouts in minutes, and as only items really worth your time are a few mega powerups and rl/railgun/shaft, which are all evenly laid out in easy to reach positions, you will find the optimal roaming routes in matter of hours. You just roam around the map bunnyhopping, try to pick everything up, and if you meet someone, slow down, kill him, and repeat the previous steps. Both in QW (tons of powerups, fast respawn times and importance of pickups) and UT (lower speed, tons of different weapons to grab, unability to stack same types of armor etc) force you to choose which stuff you pick up, and what you pick up, makes even more difference. If you have RL and Railgun in Q3, you are pretty much set weapon-wise. In UT(99/2k4) it makes a world of difference, what weapons you have, and how can you use them to your advantage. In a fast paced matches, you rarely get the chance to have every gun & ammo to them, unless you are on a killing spree.

But back to Q3. What is there to improve and experiment with time? Increasing your accuracy and prefecting your prediction. That's pretty much it. The winner is declared by the mechanical skill to aim, much like CS. In a way, it's what pro players want, but it kills the fun factor for me. QW had tons of ways which matches, especially 1on1 could go, in Q3 the guy with best RL prediction and best RG aim seems to win every time. Not much space for personality, experimentation of refreshing change. Also, the lack of multi-weapon use, low powered guns and low combat movement speeds really cut down those amazing frags, which end up on frag videos. UT2k4 matches on high level are full of those amazing and unexpected frags, like hitting someone with a biogun shot from miles away, or using three or more guns consecutively to score a mid-air frag and such. Those make UT2k4 tons of fun for me, and the wide number of weapons, good multi-weapon use capabilities and second fire leave a lot of room for experimenting. Of course at very high skill, open map and low ping matches hitscan weapons tend to be a bit overpowered, but they still don't dominate the game, unless both players just stick to hitscan, and don't try anything else. Amazingly well timed and planned hits can change the course of a 1on1 in UT2k4 totally, but in Q3 you just can't dish out such a damage with one shot, and so Q3 lacks the advantage of element of surprise. In q3 you can make the first hit, but still your opponnent will have plenty of health and the winner of the fight is decided by the best accuracy %. To me, that's not interesting, tactical or even fun. It's just a rocket arena to test, who has the best overall accuracy, as there are not plenty of useful weapons, not to mention ways of using them. Just compare that to the world of possibilities and advantages/disadvantages UT2k4 shock rifle has.

Playing smart is just much more rewarding in UT2k4, as you can dish some amazing damage with pretty much any weapon, if you catch your enemy unalerted and at the right (architechtural) spot and time. The deciding frags tend to be kind of "WOW, LOL, How I didn't see that coming?" or "How the f*ck did you come from there?" or plain "LOL, How stupid am I? I should never have ran after you in that corridor". UT2k4 1on1s end up with lots of laughs and cool, video material frags. Q3 1on1s end up with comments like "What mousepad are you using? Your railgun seems to be 13% more accurate than mine, and I'm losing every match due to that". In UT, the smarter and more creative player often wins, in Q3, the more accurately timing and aiming player almost always wins. I prefer the former, by far. I have had tons of 1on1s in UT2k4, where my opponnent had higher accuracy %, more damage done and stuff, but still lost miserably.

The blind luck factor in UT is higher than Q3 by sure, and Q3 match results are more predictable on the actual skill (read : aiming), and I like Q3 in small doses, but after a few hours of playing, I always feel like I have seen it all. I have played long enough to know that my actual aim is not going to improve much at all by training more, and I just get back to UT, where I can radically affect my performance by just changing my actual playing style. It's just much more fun and entertraining. QW was much like that as well, and no one ever had guts to say that it wasn't high skilled. It's the most high skilled DM game ever and by far. If you don't believe me, get QW and pick a public server with some players in there. Then, after 6 months, come in here to report that you had your first frag on a public DM server, even though that frag was mostly luck.
